Cabinet's nod for restructuring National Health Agency

The Cabinet approved the restructuring of existing National Health Agency as 'National Health Authority' (as an attached office to Ministry of Health and Family Welfare) for better implementation of Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY).

Cabinet apprised of progress under NHM; Maternal Mortality Ratio declines by 2.7%

The Cabinet was apprised of the progress and new initiatives under National Health Mission (NHM) such as a decline by 2.7 per cent in the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) to 130 during 2014-16 from 178 during 2010-12.

  • Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) declined to 34 in 2016 as compared to 44 in 2011. The annual rate of decline of IMR between 2015 and 2018 was 8.1 per cent; decline in the Under 5 Mortality Rate (U5MR) to 39 in 2016 from 55 in 2011. The U5MR annual rate of decline during 2015-16 was 9.3 per cent.


PM Modi adds 'Jai Anusandhan' to Shastri's slogan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi added 'Jai Anusandhan' to the slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' given by the late Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, hailing the power of research to propel the nation into the top league.

  • The slogan 'Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan' was later prefixed with 'Jai Vigyan' by then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.


States to rollout ‘Parivesh’ by January 15

An ambitious web-based single-window system ‘Parivesh’ will be rolled-out at state levels by January 15, bringing an end to the clearance nightmare for entrepreneurs.

  • Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August last year on World Biofuel Day, ‘Parivesh’ (Pro-Active and Responsive facilitation by Interactive, Virtuous and Environmental Single-window Hub) is a single-window integrated environmental management system, developed under the ‘Digital India’ initiative.


With guest Sharjah, 2019 World Book Fair starts

The 27th edition of the New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF), which has the UAE's third largest emirate Sharjah as its 2019 guest of honour, is set to enthrall book lovers from January 5 to 13 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

  • Co-organised by the National Book Trust (NBT) and the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the Book Fair's theme is "Readers with special needs", especially children.


Haryana approves 11 projects for Sarasvati river revival

To revive the ancient Sarasvati river in the state and ensure regular flow of fresh water into it, the Haryana Saraswati Heritage Development Board (HSHDB) approved 11 major projects, including restoration of various heritage sites along the course of the mythical river.

Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair declared as an authorized Immigration Check post

Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair has been declared as an authorized Immigration Check post for entry into/exit from India with valid travel documents for all classes of passengers.

  • This decision of the Union Government will open up the Port Blair Airport for direct international flight and immigration facilities.

Complaints with bank ombudsman surge 25% in FY18

According to RBI Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India, the number of complaints registered at banking ombudsman offices have seen a 25% increase in the fiscal year 2018, with majority of these complaints coming from urban centres owing to increased awareness and poor internal redressal mechanisms of banks.

  • The banking ombudsman offices in tier-1 cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Hyderabad accounted for more than 57% of the total complaints received by all BO offices.

RBI forms expert committee to rejuvenate MSMEs

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted an expert committee, which will review the 'current institutional framework in place to support MSMEs along with examining the factors affecting timely and adequate availability of finance to them.'

  • The new 8-member committee would be chaired by former Securities and Exchange Board of India chairman UK Sinha.


HDFC MF surpasses ICICI Prudential MF to become largest AMC in India

HDFC Mutual Fund has piped ICICI Prudential MF to become the country's largest asset management company after a gap of over two years.

  • The assets under management (AUM) of HDFC MF have grown over 9 per cent in October-December quarter from the previous three-month period, however, ICICI Prudential MF's AUM slipped by 0.6 per cent during the period under review.

Sports Ministry embarks Rs 100 Cr for funding athletes under TOPS: DGSAI

Sports ministry has earmarked Rs. 100 crore for funding the athletes under the (TOPS) Target Olympic Podium Scheme ahead of 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

  • The scheme was launched in September 2014 to provide financial assistance to potential Olympic medal winners.

P K Singh appointed CCI secretary

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) appointed Pramod Kumar Singh as its secretary.  The Commission was established in 2003 to replace the Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission.

Saurabh Kumar takes over as chairman of Ordnance Factory Board

Saurabh Kumar took over as the Director General of Ordnance Factories (DGOF) and chairman of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB) in Kolkata.

Indian-origin student wins gold medals at world memory championships

Dhruv Manoj, 12, who just finished primary school, memorised more than seven decks of shuffled cards in an hour; 1,155 binary numbers in half that time; and 87 names and faces in 15 minutes. He won in the 'names and faces' and 'random words' disciplines, beating 56 other contestants.

  • He has bagged two gold medals at the World Memory Championships held in Hong Kong.

Veteran cricket coach Achrekar passes away



Veteran cricket coach Ramakant Achrekar, who trained Bharat Ratna Sachin Tendulkar and his friend Vinod Kambli, among others, passed away following a heart attack.

Veteran Kannada actor C H Loknath passes away



Veteran Kannada actor C H Loknath passed away at a private hospital in Bengaluru. He was 91.
