Indian Navy to take part in French Naval Exercise in Bay of Bengal along with other QUAD member Countries 
India is to participate in France-led naval drill La Perouse for the first time in the Bay of Bengal next month.
  • Australia, Japan and the US will also participate in La Perouse, but India’s first-ever participation is seen as a significant step.
  • The exercise is scheduled between April 5 and 7.  After La Perouse, another important naval exercise, the India-French Varuna exercise, will also take place. This time, it will also include the United Arab Emirates.
Bihar becomes first state to have two green towns
Bihar is set to become the country’s first state to have two green energy efficient towns in Rajgir and Bodh Gaya. The towns will start getting solar energy through the first of its kind renewable energy project from 2023.
  • After Rajgir and Bodh Gaya, Patna’s many important government offices including the governor house, the Patna High Court, the Bihar Museum and the Vidhyut Bhawan would also get round the clock green energy supply being developed with the help of the Solar Energy Corporation of India.
  • To implement this poject, the state government has decided to use the land available in Lakhisarai and Bhagalpur district to construct solar energy plants.
UP govt organises 'banana festival' in Kushinagar 
Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government is organising a 'Banana Festival' in Kushinagar, which has witnessed the participation of at least 35 farmers and entrepreneurs.
  • People arriving at the festival will also see banana wafers, chips and pickles. Clothes, slippers, carpets and all the decorative items made of banana fibres will also be displayed in the event.
  • According to the release, several stalls displaying banana plants prepared from tissue culture have been set up to motivate farmers for greater productivity.
Indo-Korean Friendship Park inaugurated in New Delhi
Korean Minister of National Defence Suh Wook inaugurated the Indo-Korean Bilateral Friendship Park in Delhi Cantonment to commemorate the contribution of Indian peacekeepers during the Korean War in 1950-53.

Special Forces of India and US Carry Out Military Drill in Himachal Pradesh's Bakloh
Special forces of India and the US carried out a joint military exercise at Bakloh in Himachal Pradesh this month to further enhance interoperability between the two sides.

Automatic recurring payment to comply with RBI direction from April 1
Come April there will be no automatic recurring payment for various services including recharge and utility bill as RBI has made Additional Factor of Authentication (AFA) mandatory after March 31.
  • However, banks and payment gateways are seeking additional time to comply with the RBI directive on automatic recurring payment.
  • Under the new norms, banks will be required to inform customers in advance about recurring payment due and transaction would be carried following nod from the customer. So the transaction would not be automatic but would be done after authentication from the customer.
India to set up new DFI with initial paid-up capital of around 3 bn dollars with lending target of 69 bn dollars in next three years
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that India is going to set up a new Development Financial Institution with initial paid-up capital of around 3 billion Dollars with a lending target of 69 billion Dollars in next three years.

Union Bank of India and HPCL launch co-branded contactless RuPay card
Union Bank of India – one of the largest Indian government-owned banks of India and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited – a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise, have announced the launch of co-branded contactless RuPay credit card.
  • The users of this card will get 16X reward points, which would be equivalent to 4% cashback, on fuel spends worth Rs. 500 and above at over 18000 HPCL outlets across the country.
  • Customers will also receive additional 1.5% reward points from HPCL if they pay for fuel via HP Pay wallet.
FICCI-IFSCA sign MoU for development of GIFT City as world-class Fintech hub
FICCI-IFSCA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for collaboration and co-operation for the development of Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) IFSC as a world-class FinTech hub.
  • This MoU will pave the way for future collaborations and cooperation between IFSCA and FICCI for the development of a world-class FinTech Hub in GIFT IFSC.

Centre releases Rs 30,000 crore as GST compensation for FY21
Central Government has released GST Compensation of Rs. 30,000 crore to States as part compensation admissible for FY 2020-21 on 27th March, 2021.
  • The total amount of compensation released so far for the year 2020-21 is Rs. 70,000 crore. As per the decision of GST Council, back to back loan of Rs. 1,10,208 crore has also been released in lieu of shortfall in release of GST Compensation for FY 2020-21.
  • In addition to above, Centre has also released Rs. 28,000 crore (Rs. 14,000 crore to States and Rs. 14,000 crore to Centre) by way of adhoc settlement of IGST on 30th March' 2021.

1971 Battle of Basantar hero, Lt Gen Pinto (retd) passes away
Lieutenant General, Walter Anthony Gustavo ‘WAG’ Pinto (Retd), a military hero who led an infantry division to a legendary victory in the 1971 India-Pakistan War has passed away. He was 97.
  • He led the 54 Infantry Division in the Battle of Basantar in the war that gave birth to Bangladesh, leading his troops from the front with the motto he coined “bash on regardless”.

  • The cumulative loan amount provided by JICA for metro projects in India, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad, exceeds 1.3 trillion Japanese Yen (₹87,000 crore approximately).
UP cabinet approves scheme offering affordable rental housing for urban migrants, poor
The Uttar Pradesh government will start a scheme offering affordable rental housing for poor people living in cities and a proposal to this effect was approved by the state cabinet presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. 
  • Under the Affordable Rental Housing and Complexes (ARHC) scheme, urban migrants/poor laborers, those belonging to economically weaker sections, low-income groups including factory workers, educational institutions, people associated with hospitality, and students will be the beneficiaries.

BharatPe has rolled-out its innovative lending product- Distributor to Retailer (D2R) Finance which will focus specifically on empowering Small and Medium Enterprises.
  • The product is designed to provide instant liquidity to distributors, wholesalers, traders and dealers across industry verticals.
  • With this new lending product, the company will offer collateral-free loans of upto Rs. 50 lakhs for a period of 7 days to 30 days.
  • BharatPe also shared that it has already facilitated D2R loans of Rs. 50 crores in the first month of launch and aims to facilitate disbursals of Rs. 2500 crores via this new product in the next fiscal year (FY22).

Tata Motors signs MOU with SBI for financing light commercial vehicles
Tata Motors said it has signed a three-year MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with the State Bank of India, to offer financial assistance for the purchase of the company's range of small and light commercial vehicles.
  • The collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI) will allow Tata Motors' commercial vehicle (CV) customers to avail of loans in a hassle-free manner as well as access SBI's unique technology-laden offerings.
S&P raises India's FY22 GDP growth forecast to 11% from 10%
S&P Global Ratings raised India's growth forecast for financial year 2021-22 to 11% from 10% earlier, led by an expansionary fiscal policy aimed at boosting domestic private spending.
  • The US credit rating agency said a three-speed recovery pattern has emerged in Asia-Pacific. China, New Zealand, Taiwan, and Vietnam, lead the group where activities are already above pre-pandemic levels.
  • Australia, Japan, and Korea, are in the middle group where activities should reach pre-pandemic levels in early to mid-2021. India has joined the group following a sharp rebound in recent months.
Public procurement from GeM portal crosses Rs 1 lakh cr: CEO Talleen Kumar
Public procurement of goods and services has crossed Rs 1 lakh crore from government buying portal GeM since the platform was launched in August 2016, on account of a sharp increase in buying activities by different ministries.
  • The cumulative transaction value of goods and services procured from GeM by state and central government organisations grew from Rs 51,154 crore a year ago to Rs 1,00,610.3 crore as on March 25 this year.

ISRO partners with IIST to Advance Space Research similar to NASA-JPL-Caltech Model
ISRO is embarking on a mission of a different kind by taking the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) to a much higher, futuristic research orbit. The Bengaluru-headquartered space agency is striking a partnership with the IIST ‒ something similar to the JPL- Caltech model in the United States.
  • To coordinate joint research activities between ISRO centres and IIST, akin to the Caltech-JPL model, a dedicated framework has now been put into place, with a capacity building programme office (CBPO) located at ISRO headquarters here as a focal point.
  • An advanced space research group has been created to identify application-oriented research projects of importance to ISRO centres and matching with the interests of IIST faculty.

Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Sekhawat has approved Rs. 465 crore as Performance Incentive fund for seven states under Jal Jeevan Mission.
  • These states are Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.
  • For performance incentive grant, the criteria includes physical and financial progress under Jal Jeevan Mission, functionality of piped water supply schemes and capacity to utilize the fund.
UP CM inaugurates Shaheed Ashfaq Ulla Khan Zoological Park in Gorakhpur
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath inaugurated Shaheed Ashfaq Ulla Khan Zoological Park in Gorakhpur. This is the first zoo in Purvanchal and the third in the state.
  • The zoo has been named after great freedom fighter Shaheed Ashfaq Ullah Khan. He said that the nation is celebrating 75th anniversary of its Independence as Azadi Ka Amit Mahotsav this year, and it is a tribute to the great freedom fighter.
  • The work of bringing animals to the zoo began last month, and so far, 153 wild birds and animals of 31 species have arrived here. Currently, visitors can see animals, such as lion, tiger, leopard, hippopotamus, deer, chital in the zoo. The zoo also has a 7D theatre with state-of-the-art facilities where audience will experience 13 effects, such as rain, lightning, fog, smoke and fragrance.
India conducts maiden joint naval patrolling with Madagascar
In a first, the navies of India and Madagascar undertook joint patrolling of Madagascar’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). 
  • The INS Shardul and Malagasy Naval Ship Trozona undertook the patrol.
  • India is seeking to expand its defence footprints in the Western Indian Ocean where it has been a traditional net security provider.
Two-day Indo-US naval exercise PASSEX in Bay of Bengal concludes
India and the US kicked off a two-day naval exercise in the Bay of Bengal, reflecting the growing congruence in their defence and military partnership.
  • Indian Navy deployed its warship Shivalik and long-range maritime patrol aircraft P8I in the 'PASSEX' exercise while the US Navy was represented by the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group.
  • Besides the Indian Navy, US, Australian and Japanese navies participated in the Malabar naval exercise.

Anish Shah to take over as MD-CEO of M&M
The board of directors of Mahindra and Mahindra (M&M) has appointed Anish Shah as the managing director and chief executive officer of the company effective April 2.

  • Shah will become the first professional MD and CEO in the history of the Mahindra group to have complete oversight of and responsibility for the Mahindra group businesses.

American author Carmen Maria Machado has won the Rathbones Folio prize for her memoir, In the Dream House.
  • In the 2019 book, the author outlines her experiences in a same-sex relationship with her former partner, and the abuse she was subjected to. It is at once an inventive and radical work, a true testimony to her narrative gift.
  • The Rathbones Folio Prize is a literary award that was backed by London-based publisher The Folio Society in the initial two years.
Ranger Mahinder Giri wins International Ranger Award
Mahinder Giri, a range officer who has been deployed at Motichur range of Rajaji Tiger Reserve (RTR) for the past few years, has become the only ranger from Asia to win the prestigious International Ranger Award.
  • The award has been announced for 10 professionals across the globe by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Commission on Protected Areas (WCPA), “based on their contribution towards conservation”. 
  • Other winners were from Latin America, Africa and Eastern Europe. All the winners will receive a uniform patch and their employing organisations will receive US $10,000 (Rs 7,26,150) as prize money, which can be used to “support the winner and their team to conduct their work”.

HDFC Bank was adjudged the India's best bank for SMEs at the Asiamoney Best Bank Awards 2021. In its evaluation, the magazine said on its website – “HDFC Bank’s transformation of its micro, small and medium-sized enterprise (MSME) business over the past few years makes it a worthy winner of this award.”
  • The Annual Best Banks survey of the financial magazine based in Hong Kong aims to identify which banks in each market have excelled across a range of core banking activities over the past 12 months.
2020 was Best Year for Wind Industry: Global Wind Report 2021
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the year 2020 was the best year in history for the global wind industry as this sector installed 93GW of new capacity in 2020, according to a new report titled ‘Global Wind Report 2021, released by the Global Wind Energy Council.
  • This is the 16th annual flagship report, released by GWEC on March 25, 2021. The 93GW represents a 53% year-on-year increase.
  • As per the report, the global wind power market increased four times in size over the past decade but the record growth was seen in 2020.
  • This increase was driven by a surge of installations in China and the US alone
  • Together, the US and China installed 75% of new installations in 2020 and account for over half of the world’s total wind power capacity.
  • Similarly, it will need to increase the capacity to 280GW annually to meet net zero emission target by 2050.

Former RBI Deputy Governor KC Chakrabarty passes away 
Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Kamalesh Chandra Chakrabarty passed away at his Chembur residence in Mumbai due to a heart attack. He was 69 years old.
  • Chakrabarty was the deputy governor of the central bank between June 15, 2009 and April 25, 2014 when he left office three months before to his term ended.
  • Before that, he was a distinguished banker, and served as the Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab National Bank (2007-2009), and CMD of Indian Bank (2005-2007).

Visakhapatnam gets the 'World's First Mobile Water from Air Kiosk and Water Knowledge Centre'
Hyderabad-based startup, Maithri Aquatech said it has set up the world’s first mobile water-from-air kiosk and ‘Water Knowledge Centre’ in the smart city of Visakhapatnam.
  • This initiative is supported by Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and project SEWAH (Sustainable Enterprises for Water and Health) - an alliance between USAID and SWN (Safe Water Network).
  • The kiosk will provide clean potable water from the air by making use of Maithri Aquatech’s Meghdoot solution as a source to generate water with no dependency on groundwater as well as surface water resources.

Noted journalist and author Anil Dharker passed away in Mumbai. He was 74.
  • Dharker had been the editor of a variety of publications, starting with ‘Debonair’, ‘Mid-Day’; ‘The Independent’ and ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’. He was a columnist for The Indian Express newspaper and has authored ‘The Romance Of Salt’, a book on Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March.
  • Dharker had also worked as a TV show producer and anchor. He was also a member of the Advisory Boards of the Indian Council for  Relations and the Children's Film Society of India.
Noted Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra passes away
Noted Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra, the wife of legendary classical dancer Kelucharan Mohapatra, has died due to old age-related ailments. She was 86.
  • She started her dancing career at the Annapurna Theatre in Puri in 1947. She has also acted in four Odia movies. Though he was an expert in Odissi and Gotipua dance forms, Kelucharan was then performing as a tabla player in the theatre.

Visakhapatnam gets the 'World's First Mobile Water from Air Kiosk and Water Knowledge Centre'
Hyderabad-based startup, Maithri Aquatech said it has set up the world’s first mobile water-from-air kiosk and ‘Water Knowledge Centre’ in the smart city of Visakhapatnam.
  • This initiative is supported by Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and project SEWAH (Sustainable Enterprises for Water and Health) - an alliance between USAID and SWN (Safe Water Network).
  • The kiosk will provide clean potable water from the air by making use of Maithri Aquatech’s Meghdoot solution as a source to generate water with no dependency on groundwater as well as surface water resources.

  • The Chatrapal convention center has been developed under Swadesh Darshan Scheme of Ministry of Tourism and will help in establishing Khajuraho as an iconic destination.

Bangladesh celebrates 50 years of its Independence and National Day on 26 March, coinciding with the grand celebration of the birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
  • It was 50 years ago on the night of 25 March, 1971, that Pakistan’s military launched a violent crackdown on the city of Dhaka, then part of East Pakistan, to quell a rising nationalist movement seeking independence for what is today known as Bangladesh.

Noted journalist and author Anil Dharker passes away at 74
Noted journalist and author Anil Dharker passed away in Mumbai. He was 74.
  • Dharker had been the editor of a variety of publications, starting with ‘Debonair’, ‘Mid-Day’; ‘The Independent’ and ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’. He was a columnist for The Indian Express newspaper and has authored ‘The Romance Of Salt’, a book on Mahatma Gandhi’s Dandi March.
  • Dharker had also worked as a TV show producer and anchor. He was also a member of the Advisory Boards of the Indian Council for  Relations and the Children's Film Society of India.
Noted Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra passes away
Noted Odissi dancer Laxmipriya Mohapatra, the wife of legendary classical dancer Kelucharan Mohapatra, has died due to old age-related ailments. She was 86.
  • She started her dancing career at the Annapurna Theatre in Puri in 1947. She has also acted in four Odia movies. Though he was an expert in Odissi and Gotipua dance forms, Kelucharan was then performing as a tabla player in the theatre.
