Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates Statue of Unity



The Statue of Unity, a 182-metre giant structure built in honour of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, has been inaugrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The imposing monument, touted as the world's tallest statue, is twice the height of Statue of Liberty and is built on an islet, Sadhu Bet, near the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada district.

  • Modi would also inaugurate the 'Wall of Unity' (a monument defining India's unity) near the statue.


Japan joins International Solar Alliance

In a boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-initiated International Solar Alliance (ISA), Japan announced joining the group submitting the instrument of ratification.
Japan will be the 71st country to sign and 48th country to ratify the ISA Framework.
The decision was announced at the end of bilateral Summit between Prime Minister Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe.

Netherland To Be Partner Country for 25th DST-CII Technology Summit 2019

The Kingdom of Netherlands will be the Partner Country 25th DST – CII Technology Summit to be organized in 2019, announced Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, Environment,Forest and Climate Change.

Indonesia's Medan city inaugurates 'Little India Gate'

Nearly 7,000 people gathered in northern Indonesia to witness the inauguration of ‘Little India Gate’, the first-of-its-kind structure in the country which recognises the contribution of Indian community in the development of Medan city.

 S Korea's First Lady to attend Uttar Pradesh's Deepotsav

South Korean first lady Kim Jung-sook will be the Chief Guest at the Deepotsav event being organised by the Uttar Pradesh government on November 6. Accepting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s invitation, she will be leading a high-level delegation that is scheduled to visit India from November 4 to 7 this year.

Anupam Kher resigns as FTII chairman

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has resigned from his position as chairman of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) because of his acting commitments.

  • Kher, who was appointed to this position a year back, said he needed to spend prolonged periods of time in the United States for the next three years for an international television show because of which he would not be able to give enough time to FTII.

  • Satish Kaushik was selected as the Vice President of FTII Society. This is for the first time that a Vice President was appointed for the Society.

NASA Retires Its Planet Hunter, the Kepler Space Telescope



The Kepler space telescope has run out of fuel and will be retired after a 9.5 year mission in which it detected thousands of planets beyond our solar system and boosted the search for worlds that might harbour alien life.

  • The Kepler telescope discovered more than 2,600 of the roughly 3,800 exoplanets that have been documented in the past two decades.

  • NASA launched the Kepler telescope on March 6, 2009, to learn if Earth-like planets that might harbour life are common or rare in other star systems.


Seychelles Launches World’s 1st Sovereign Blue Bond

The Republic of Seychelles has launched the world’s first sovereign blue bond a financial instrument designed to support sustainable marine and fisheries projects.

  • Proceeds from the bond will support the expansion of marine protected areas‚ improved governance of priority fisheries and the development of the Seychelles’ blue economy.

  • The blue bond‚ which is part of an initiative that combines public and private investment to mobilise resources for empowering local communities and businesses.

India jumps 23 places to 77th in ease of doing business ranking

India has jumped 23 places in ease of doing business ranking. It was at 100th place last year and now it is at 77th rank. India is now recognised as among top ten improvers for the 2nd consecutive year. It is now ranked first among South Asian countries compared to 6th rank in 2014.

  • Among the BRICS nations, only China, which was last year ranked 78th has logged smarter gains, rising to 46th place.

  • In its annual 'Doing Business' 2019 report, World Bank said India improved its rank on six out of the 10 parameters relating to starting and doing business in a country.

Mary Kom Named As Brand Ambassador Of Women's World C'ship



Five-time world champion Mary Kom has been named as the brand ambassador of the upcoming 10th edition of the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women World Championship. 

  • The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) unveiled the logo and anthem of the Championship. The logo, depicting "fire and women's empowerment," was designed to bring in the two key elements-the inner strength of a woman and the national colours-together to mark the occasion of India playing hosts to the championships for the second time in the country.

  • Similarly, the theme of the anthem: "Make some noise, scream and shout! We are here to knock you out!!!" encapsulates the emotion that a boxer goes through when she takes to the ring. The logo launch event was attended by Indian Team members, led by Mary Kom, and dignitaries from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and BFI, including its president Ajay Singh.

  • AIBA Women World Championship is slated to be held from November 15-24 in New Delhi.

Malala Yousafzai to receive Harvard award for activism

Nobel Prize winner Malala Yousafzai is being honoured by Harvard University for her work promoting girls' education. Harvard's Kennedy School says she will be awarded the 2018 Gleitsman Award at a December 6 ceremony.

  • The Gleitsman Award provides $125,000 for activism that has improved quality of life around the world.

National Unity Day



National Unity Day or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas was introduced by Government of India in 2014. The day is celebrated on October 31 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel one of the founding leaders of the Republic of India.

  • The day was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pay tribute to Vallabhbhai Patel, who as the Home Minister of India, played an important role in the unification of India.

  • Home Ministry of India stated that the day will provide an opportunity to reaffirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity, and security of our country.

Nitin Gadkari lays foundation for India’s largest Dry Dock in Kerala

Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for the country's largest Dry Dock at Cochin Shipyard in Kerala.

  • It is being constructed at a cost of 1,799 rupees crore and will be completed by May 2021. It is expected to generate employment opportunities for about 2,000 people.


5th National Summit on Public Health Care begins in Assam

The 5th National Summit on Good and Replicable Practices and Innovations in Public Health Care Systems in India began at Kaziranga in Assam. The objective of the summit is to share and learn the good practices being implemented by several states and organizations for the betterment of the health sector.

Italian Prime Minister arrives in India



Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte arrived in  New Delhi. During his one-day visit, Conte will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hold one-to-one meeting.

  • The Italian Prime Minister is also scheduled to take part in the India-Italy Technology Summit, organised by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) in partnership with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

India-Italy Technology Summit inaugurated

A two-day technology summit between India and Italy began in New Delhi with the Science and Technology Minister Harsh Vardhan calling for promotion of high quality and high impact collaborative research projects across the value chain, with a focus on boosting technological entrepreneurship.

  • The conference organised by Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in collaboration with the Italian government.

Gujarat CM Rupani launches Ghogha-Dahej Ro-Pax service

Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani launched the Ghogha-Dahej Ro-Pax ferry service, with BJP functionaries, shipping agents, ship recyclers from Alang and representatives from other industrial sectors accompanying him on the maiden voyage of the new Ro-Pax ferry.

  • The ferry, which connects Saurashtra to South Gujarat, carries passengers and vehicles across the Gulf of Khambhat between Ghogha, Bhavnagar district and Dahej, Bharuch district.


Odisha launches scheme to increase solar energy use

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched a scheme to increase the use of solar energy in the agriculture sector. Under the “Soura Jalanidhi” scheme, 5,000 solar pumps will be given to farmers with up to 90 per cent subsidy. It will create irrigation potential for 2,500 acres in the state.

  • The state government has taken the initiative to promote solar photovoltaic pump sets in areas which are unserved and underserved by electricity connectivity with the aim of increasing the irrigation potential and cropping intensity in the state.

  • The government has also made a provision of Rs 27.18 crore for the scheme in the 2018-19 financial year.

NASA sets world record with Mars 2020 parachute

NASA has created a world record with its "supersonic parachute" for the Mars 2020 mission that survived 37,000 kg load and was deployed in just four-tenths of a second - twice the speed of sound. It was the fastest inflation in history of a parachute this size and created a peak load of almost 70,000 pounds (37,000 kg) of force.

  • It was the third and final test flight of the Advanced Supersonic Parachute Inflation Research Experiment (ASPIRE) project that conducted a series of sounding rocket tests to help decide which parachute design to use on the Mars 2020 mission.


Global vertebrate population declined 60% since 1970: WWF

The global populations of vertebrates - mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles - have declined by 60 per cent since 1970, according to a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) report.

  • The "Living Planet Report of the Global Fund for Nature" collects the most recent data from the Living Planet Index (LPI), which has analysed the status of 16,704 wildlife populations of 4,005 vertebrate species between 1970 and 2014.

  • Globally, nature provides services worth approximately $125 trillion annually and helps ensure the supply of fresh air, clean water, food, energy or medicine.


Typhoon Yutu makes landfall in Philippines

The 18th tropical cyclone for 2018, in Philippines, Typhoon Yutu is the second most significant devastating typhoon in Philippines after Mangkhut. Yutu made landfall over Isabela province in northern Philippine main Island Luzon.

  • Typhoon Yutu crashed into Isabela with maximum nonstop winds of 150 kmph and gusts of up to 210 kmph.

India tops as Asia's most investment savvy economy: Standard Chartered

India has emerged as the most investment-savvy economy in Asia and over two-thirds of the country’s affluent class prefer to make use of various investment products to meet their financial goals and greater social mobility, according to a new study titled ‘The Emerging Affluent Study 2018– Climbing the Prosperity Ladder’ by Standard Chartered.

  • The study examined the views of emerging affluent consumers from 11 markets across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Saving for their children’s education, which is also the top savings priority across the markets, was the number one financial goal for India’s emerging affluents.

India withdraw from South West Asian Football Federation

India along with six other South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) members, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives and Pakistan pulled out of the newly formed South West Asian Football Federation (SWAFF) with immediate effect.

  • SWAFF, which was formed in August 2018, had held its first general assembly in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Veteran Marathi composer Yeshwant Deo passes away



Veteran Marathi musician Yeshwant Deo, who had composed music for many films including Shabana Azmi-starrer Saaz, passed away after suffering from a brief illness. He was 91.

  • Deo was a revered figure in the Marathi music circle and industry where he composed music for more than 40 Marathi films and plays. A recipient of the Lata Mangeshkar award, He was also known for his composition in Bhav Geet.


Urdu writer Qazi Abdussattar passes away

Eminent novelist, short story writer Qazi Abdus Sattar passed away after a prolonged illness at a hospital in New Delhi. He was 85. Professor Qazi Abdus Sattar, a Padmashri awardee, wrote more than half a dozen novels and his fiction blazed a new trail in historical novel writings in Urdu.

  • His novels, Darashikoh, Ghalib and Khalid bin Waleed and Salahuddin Ayyubi got widespread critical adulation across the Urdu knowing world.

UN to launch project on creating India's intangible heritage inventory

Concerned over the "disappearance" of many intangible legacy of India over time, the United Nations (UN) will soon launch a project on creating an "inventory" of art forms, craftsmanship and other intangible cultural heritage of the country.

  • A total of 13 intangible cultural heritage elements from India have been inscribed till date on the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
    These include the Kumbh Mela, Novruz, Tradition of Vedic chanting, Ramlila, Kutiyattam, Sanskrit theatre; Ramman, religious festival and ritual theatre of the Garhwal Himalayas; Kalbelia folk songs and dances of Rajasthan; and Chhau dance.


India, Japan sign MoC to promote Ayurveda, Yoga

India and Japan decided to cooperate for the first time in the areas of Indian traditional medicinal systems such as Yoga and Ayurveda to provide holistic healthcare and wellness in both the countries.

  • The Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) between India’s Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) and the Kanagawa Prefectural Government was signed during the ongoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan.

  • The MOC will also complement another MoC to promote cooperation in the areas of National Health Protection Mission.

  • PM Modi is in Japan to attend the 13th India-Japan annual summit in Tokyo.


India, Japan sign bilateral currency swap agreement worth $75 Bn

India and Japan concluded a USD 75 billion bilateral currency swap agreement, a move that will help in bringing greater stability in foreign exchange and capital markets in the country. The agreement will further strengthen and widen the depth and diversity of economic cooperation between the two countries.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is visiting Japan, and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe held delegation-level talks during which the two leaders discussed a range of bilateral, regional and global issues including the situation in the Indo-Pacific region.


ISRO successfully tests lander for soft landing on the moon

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully conducted crucial tests to ensure smooth and precise landing of Vikram, the lander aboard Chandrayaan 2.

  • The aim of the Lander Actuator Performance Test (LAPT) was to assess the performance of the navigational system onboard the lander for steering the module horizontally and vertically to reach a predefined target.


India's first engine-less train unveiled



 

The country's first engine-less train, widely regarded as the success to the Shatabdi Express will hit the tracks on October 29. Known as Train 18, this train is run by a self-propulsion module without a separate engine. The train is capable of running at a speed of 160 kmph and comes with technical features for enhanced quick acceleration. Train 18 was developed by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory in 18 months.

  • The coach has been designed in such a manner that it allows passengers to take a look at the driver's cabin. The self-propelled Train 18 is fitted with CCTV cameras, and has two executive compartments in the middle with 52 seats each. Trailer coaches will have 78 coaches each. It is also fitted with diffused lighting, automatic doors and GPS-based Passenger Information System.


CII Joins WhatsApp to Train SMEs Across India

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) announced that it would work with WhatsApp to educate and train Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) on how WhatsApp Business app can help them grow their businesses.

  • There will be on-ground trainings for SMEs on the features and best practices for WhatsApp Business app. The business owners will have the opportunity to attend training webinars that will help them grow and expand.

  • Facebook-owned WhatsApp and the CII will work to enhance business communication for Indian SMEs through CII’s SME Technology Facilitation Centre. WhatsApp and CII will also develop informative content to be distributed among entrepreneurs both in physical and digital formats.


Facebook launches Digital Literacy Library in 6 Indian languages

As part of its efforts to train 3,00,000 people in India on digital literacy by end of 2018, Facebook has announced the launch of the Digital Literacy Library, a collection of lessons in six local languages - Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.

  • This was announced at Facebook's South Asia Safety Summit where the Ministry of Women and Child Development together with Facebook convened a group of leaders in safety and technology and was joined by over 70 organizations from five countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.

  • With more than 200 million young people online in India, this library will be a resource for educators looking to address digital literacy and help young people build the skills needed for safely enjoying digital technology.


Vigilance Awareness Week to be observed to achieve Corruption Free Society



The Vigilance Awareness Week will be observed across the country from 29 October to promote probity in public life and achieve a corruption-free society. The theme of the week this year is, 'Eradicate Corruption - Build A New India'.

  • The observance of the week will commence with pledge taking by public servants in the Ministries, Departments, PSUs, Banks and all other Organisations.
    During the week, several functions will be organized to create awareness against the corrupt practices. The week, in which 31st October, the birthday of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel falls, is observed as Vigilance Awareness Week every year.


3-day India Mobile Congress 2018 concludes in New Delhi

India Mobile Congress(IMC) 2018, a marquee event which provided a peep into the exciting future in the rapidly evolving area of digital communications ended on 29 October. This year’s event theme was “New Digital Horizons – Connect. Create. Innovate.”

  • The mega 3-day event was inaugurated on October 25 by Shri Manoj Sinha,Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Communications.  Delegations from 20 countries participated in the event, which saw more than 300 companies showcasing their latest and best technologies, products, services, and applications. 


India's First Robotic Dinosaurs Gallery Inaugurated In Kapurthala

The country's first gallery on robotic dinosaurs was opened to the public at the Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala.
A joint initiative of the Union and state governments, the science city is the biggest project of its kind in northern India and has been set up in 72 acres of land in the heart of Punjab, on Jalandhar-Kapurthala road.

  • Built at a cost of Rs. 1.50 crore, the gallery with its robotic dinosaurs as well as manually operated ones will take the visitors million of years back to the period when dinosaurs roamed the earth freely.


Odisha CM Patnaik launches EDWS

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched India’s first automatic Early Warning Dissemination System (EDWS). The inauguration coincided with Odisha Government observing Disaster Preparedness Day. On this day, 19 years ago, the state was left devastated by “Super Cyclone” in 1999.

  • In total 122 alert towers have been set up under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) along the coastal line of Odisha to give early warning on the risk in impending natural calamities like tsunami, cyclone and flood.

  • During the launch, Patnaik also announced the programme for preparations of Village Disaster Management Plans (VDMPs) in 7000 villages in the first phase to build resilient community and to undertake a study on the vulnerability of landslides in Gajapati district of Odisha for taking preventive measures against loss of lives and property due to disasters in future.

  • Other than EDWS, NCRMP also includes Satellite-Based Mobile Data Voice by Terminals (SBMDVT), Digital Mobile Radio (DMR), a mass messaging system to be operated from the state emergency operation centre and a universal communication interface to allow interoperability among different communication technologies.


Gujarat’s First Mega Food Park Inaugurated In Surat

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the state’s first ‘Food Agro Infrastructure Mega Food Park’, jointly built by Central and Gujarat Governments at a cost of Rs.120-crore on 70-acre plot, at Shah Village in Mangrol taluka in Surat district.

  • The modern infrastructure for food processing created at Park will benefit the farmers, growers, processors and consumers of Gujarat and adjoining areas immensely and prove to be a big boost to the growth of the food processing sector in the State of Gujarat.

Angela Merkel to step down as German chancellor in 2021

Angela Merkel has announced she will quit as German chancellor when her mandate ends in 2021, as she sought to draw a line under a series of political crises that have rocked her fragile coalition.

  • The veteran leader who has led Germany for 13 years said she hoped her planned departure would end bitter fighting in her coalition and finally focus it on its task of governing Europe’s biggest economy. She added that she would not stand in Germany’s next elections nor seek to renew her mandate as chancellor when her fourth term ends in 2021.


93 per cent children breathe toxic air globally: WHO

Every day, around 93 per cent of the children globally under the age of 15 years (1.8 billion children) breathe air that is so polluted it puts their health and development at serious risk, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.

  • The report, "Air pollution and child health: Prescribing clean air", examines the heavy toll of both ambient (outside) and household air pollution on the health of the world's children, particularly in low and middle-income countries.

  • The air pollution related mortality and disease burden India faces is also the highest in the world. More than two million deaths occur in India prematurely every year, accounting for 25 per cent of the global deaths due to poor air quality.

Microsoft overtakes Amazon as second most valuable U.S. company

Microsoft overtook Amazon to become the second most valuable tech company in the United States. The change in rankings was the result of a drop in Amazon's stock value after a weaker-than-expected quarterly report from the online retailer wiped out $65 billion worth of market capitalization.

  • Amazon's stock value stood at $805 billion while Microsoft's sat at $823 billion. Apple became the first U.S. company to be valued above $1 trillion earlier this year following a period of record stock buybacks.


IBM to acquire Red Hat for $34 bn

Tech major IBM has announced to acquire Open Source Solutions leader Red Hat for a massive $34 billion. The acquisition, IBM's biggest so far, will provide open approach to Cloud, featuring unprecedented security and portability across multiple clouds.

  • The deal will make IBM top Hybrid Cloud provider in an emerging $1 trillion growth market. 
    Red Hat will operate as a distinct unit within IBM's Hybrid Cloud team.


SBI, Hitachi Payments form JV for digital payment platform

Country's largest lender State Bank of India(SBI) and payments solution provider Hitachi Payment Services India entered into an agreement to form a joint venture for establishing a card acceptance and digital payment platform.

  • The JV will provide various payment options to customers and merchants focusing on areas such as rollout of a nationwide card acceptance infrastructure, quick response (QR) code acceptance, Unified Payment Interface (UPI), mass transit sector and e-commerce businesses.

India & Pakistan declared joint winners of Asian Champions Trophy

In Men's Hockey, India and Pakistan were declared joint winners of the Asian Champions Trophy at Muscat in Oman. The tournament director declared both teams as winners after the summit clash was called off due to heavy rain.

A founding member of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) Pankaj Bandyopadhyay passed away at a hospital in Kolkata after a prolonged illness. Pankaj Bandyopadhyay, also former leader of the opposition in West Bengal assembly, was 72. He was the chairman of the party's policy-making body for several years since the inception of the TMC.

Indo-Canadians pledge $7mn to build hostels for poor children in India

Indo-Canadian expatriates have donated more than $7 million dollars to a Toronto-based non-profit organisation which builds and runs education hostels in rural India. The non-profit AIM for SEWA (Canada) builds hostels in far-flung, rural areas of India to educate children from poor families.

  • At this year’s annual gala dinner in Toronto attended by former Miss India Pooja Batra, many Indo-Canadians pledged donations to AIM for SEWA to take its collections to over $7 million dollars to promote education of poor rural kids in India.


Arunachal, British Council sign MoU for cultural cooperation

The Arunachal Pradesh government signed a MoU with The British Council in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation.

  • The MoU was signed by Tayek Talom, Director of Higher and Technical Education of Arunachal Pradesh, and Alan Gemmell, Director, British Council India, on the sidelines of the Tawang Festival.

  • As per the MOU, as many as 50 faculty members from government higher education institutions will be trained by the British Council every year, starting from December. Further, 50 students of higher and technical education institutes will be trained in English language skills annually.


Meghalaya launches Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries

The Meghalaya government is all set to launch a new scheme Blue Revolution: Integrated Development and Management of Fisheries on October 26 next to meet the requirements of the state. The Central Government has sanctioned Rs 51 crore for scheme and the State Government has already received the first installment of Rs 25 crore.

  • The Union Government under the scheme is targeting to enhance the fish production from 107.95 lakh tonnes in 2015-16 to about 150 lakh tonnes by the end of the financial year 2019-20.


Kerala the best State for teenage girls in India: Report

Kerala tops the TAG index which compares the performance of each State based on the status of their teenage girls, as a part of the survey findings of The Teen Age Girls (TAG) Report, conducted by Project Nanhi Kali.

  • Compiled and published by the Naandi Foundation, with grant support from Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, this report is touted as the nation’s first report on what it means to be a teenage girl in India.

  • Kerala is followed by Mizoram, Sikkim, Manipur and Himachal Pradesh as the top States, while the top three cities were found to be Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru.


Portal to promote Odia language, literature inaugurated in Odisha

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched a new web portal of ‘Odia Virtual Academy’ (www.ova.gov.in) to promote the Odia language and literature at the Secretariat in Bhubaneshwar. The new website will be helpful in the promotion of Odia language at the international level, especially for the Non Resident Odias (NROs). 

  • Three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) were signed by the Odisha Government with the University of Chicago library, CDAC and Centre for Internet and Society, Bengaluru to expedite digitisation of Odia literature and development of Odia software.

The United Nations has hailed the "inspiring" work of four individuals and organisations as it announced the winners of its Prize in the Field of Human Rights for 2018.

African American playwright Ntozake Shange passes away



Noted African American playwright Ntozake Shange, known for her works addressing sensitive issues related to racism, passed away at the age of 70.  Shange had suffered multiple strokes in recent years, but her health was improving. Famous for her movie 'For Coloured Girls', Shange died peacefully in her sleep in an assisted living facility in Bowie.

Former Delhi CM Madan Lal Khurana passes away



Former chief minister of Delhi Madan Lal Khurana passed away at the age of 82. He was bedridden for over two years due to multiple illnesses and was undergoing treatment at his Kirti Nagar residence in the city.

  • A tall BJP leader, Khurana was the chief minister of Delhi from 1993 to 1996. He also served as the governor of Rajasthan in 2004 and was also former Union tourism minister.

India-UK to collaborate on research on Ganga delta, Bay of Bengal

India and the United Kingdom will collaborate on research on different aspects of the Ganga delta region and the Bay of Bengal. The two countries are also collaborating in several areas of earth sciences and weather, like the monsoon.

  • M Rajeevan, Secretary, Ministry of Earth Sciences, said deliberations in this regard were on between the two sides. He was speaking on the sidelines of a programme launched by the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). The partnership through the UKRI has generated innovative scientific and technological solutions that will transform both societies and economies.


India contributes $300K to UN programme to train commanders

India has donated $300,000 to a programme to train commanders for UN peacekeeping.
Known as the "Pipeline to Peacekeeping Command Programme," it will "over a period of three years, help develop the capacity of future commanders and managers to lead by example and raise awareness of UN standards of conduct among their personnel. India's contribution will be used with a "a specific focus on issues of conduct and discipline".


Indian Railways is building world's highest railway line

Indian railways plans to connect New Delhi with Ladakh region through the world's highest railway line that will run along the India-China border. The national transporter plans to build a strategically-important Bilaspur-Manali- Leh line along the Indo-China border.

  • Besides giving quick all-weather access to the armed forces, the railway line will also boost tourism in the scenic Ladakh region that is currently connected by road and air. The Ladakh-Himachal region receives heavy snowfall and road and air connectivity are sometime affected due to bad weather.

  • The rail line will have a highest road point of 5,360 metres above mean sea level that is comparable only to the Qinghai-Tibet Railway Line in China, which is at a height of around 2,000 metres.


2nd Guwahati International Film Festival 2018 begins with focus on ASEAN



The second edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF 2018) began on October 25. The week-long festival will end on October 31 and will witness the screening of more than 100 films from 50 countries.

  • With the theme ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’, the focus of the GIFF 2018 is the ASEAN region.

  • The festival was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. The opening film of the GIFF 2018, was 'Bhoga Khiriki’ (Broken Window) by renowned filmmaker Jahnu Barua. Produced by Priyanka Chopra under the banner of Purple Pebble Pictures, it is also the first Assamese film produced under its banner.

NATO’s biggest military exercise begins in Norway

NATO's biggest military maneuvers since the Cold War began in Norway in a hypothetical scenario that involves restoring the Scandinavian country's sovereignty after an attack by a fictitious aggressor.

  • The wargames bring together around 50,000 personnel from all 29 NATO allies, plus partners Finland and Sweden. It will go on till November 7.

Microsoft completes $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub

Microsoft has closed its $7.5 billion acquisition of GitHub, a leading software development platform which brings more than 31 million developers to create, collaborate, share and build on each other's work. Microsoft announced in June that it has reached an agreement to acquire GitHub.

The government appointed IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Mishra as the Interim Director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for three months as incumbent Karnal Singh will retire on October 28. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) also said that it has approved Mishra’s appointment to the post of Principal Special Director of the financial probe agency.
