27th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference Starts In Gandhinagar, Gujarat



The 27th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC 2018) has started in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) fosters the exchange of scientific and technical results in nuclear fusion research and development through its series of Fusion Energy Conferences.

  • The FEC 2018 aims to provide a forum for the discussion of key physics and technology issues as well as innovative concepts of direct relevance to the use of nuclear fusion as a source of energy.

80% of Ganga to be clean before March 2019: Gadkari

Union Minister for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Nitin Gadkari said that the work for cleaning and rejuvenation of River Ganga is ongoing and 70-80 per cent of the work will be completed before March next year.

  • The minister reviewed the Namami Gange project work with officials and contractors from four states namely Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal.

Environment Ministry Launches 'Harit Diwali, Swasth Diwali' Campaign



Environment Ministry has launched Harit Diwali, Swasth Diwali campaign. This campaign was initiated in 2017-18 wherein large number of school children participated and took pledge to minimize bursting of crackers. The Ministry has initiated the campaign on the similar lines but extended to a pan-India.

  • The Harit Diwali-Swasth Diwali campaign is now merged with “Green Good Deed” movement that has been initiated as a social mobilization for conservation and protection of environment. The Ministry is encouraging all schools and colleges to be part of this campaign.


India, Myanmar sign MoU towards Sittwe Port operationalisation

India and Myanmar signed an important MoU for the appointment of a private Port Operator for the Operation and Maintenance of Sittwe Port, Paletwa Inland Water Terminal and associated facilities included in the Kaladan Multi Model Transit Transport Project in implementation of India’s Act East Policy.

  • Subsequent to the commencement of operations at this port, it would offer new infrastructure for trade including between India and Myanmar, thereby contributing to job creation and development in the whole region, particularly in the Rakhine and Chin States of Myanmar.

  • The MoU was signed on behalf of the Government of India by Vijay Gokhale, Foreign Secretary and by U Win Khant, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications on behalf of the Government of Myanmar.

UNESCO MGIEP, Government of AP to organize TECH 2018

UNESCO MGIEP in association with Government of Andhra Pradesh announces TECH 2018, an international conference which aims to showcase the role of games and digital learning to create peaceful and sustainable societies.

  • TECH 2018 will feature speakers from the fields of digital learning, artificial intelligence, games for learning and more. The three day event will be held from 15-17 November at Novotel, Vizag City, Andhra Pradesh.

  • TECH 2018 aims at drawing a blueprint for harnessing pedagogical possibilities opened up by digital technologies, in order to contribute to enabling a revolutionary shift in education from individual content acquisition to collaborative intelligence.


Gwalior to host 4-day International Dance Festival

Uzbekistan Ambassador to India Farhod Arziev inaugurated a four-day international dance festival titled "Udbhav Utsav" in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.

  • The dance festival was sponsored by the Greenwood group of schools. Dance troupes from Bulgaria, Turkey and Sri Lanka, apart from 25 teams from India, participated in the event.


Sagar conference inaugurated in Goa

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu will inaugurate the second edition of the Sagar conference at Bambolim, Goa. It is being organised by the Forum for Integrated National Security (FINS).

  • The conference aims to highlight the technological, economic and developmental opportunities with opening up of space and how efficiently the potential can be explored. Delegates including scientists and researchers from around 15 countries will participate in the conference. 


India is world’s 2nd most underinsured country

India has the second largest insurance gap in the world of $27 billion after China, where the under insurance or insurance gap is over $76 billion.

  • According to a Lloyd's of London's report, global under insurance stands at $162.5 billion in 2018. This report also includes all the latest non-life under insurance and insurance penetration data for natural catastrophes for 43 countries across the globe.

Life insurer PNB Metlife has unveiled an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered customer service app ‘Khushi’. The app is designed to be a one-stop shop providing insurance-related information, anytime, anywhere, such as policy features, premium due details besides providing fund value and portfolio details. It has the ability to understand customer intent and provide tailored responses.

Bajrang Punia settles for silver at World C'ship



Wrestler Bajrang Punia had to settle for a silver medal after he went down against Japan’s Takuto Otoguro in the 65kg final of the wrestling World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

  • Otoguru became Japan's youngest World Champion at the age of 19.

PM Announces Award in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s Name

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said a national award in the name of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose will be given every year to police personnel who do "exemplary work" in rescue and relief operations during any kind of disasters.

  • The announcement came on the 75th anniversary of Bose's declaration of the formation of India's first independent government the Azad Hind Government on October 21, 1943. PM Modi said the award will be announced on January 23, on Netaji's birthday.


Maharshi Valmiki Jayanti Award for Deve Gowda



The Karnataka government decided to confer the Sri Maharshi Valmiki award for the year 2018-19 to former prime minister H D Deve Gowda. Chief minister H D Kumaraswamy will be presenting the award to H D Deve Gowda.

  • The award also contains a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh and a citation during the Valmiki Jayanti celebrations organised by the Social Welfare department in Vidhana Soudha.


Invest India wins UN Investment Promotion Award

Invest India has received the top UN Investment Promotion Award in recognition of its efforts to boost investments in the renewable energy sector in India.

  • The award was presented by Armenian President Armen Sarkissian to Deepak Bagla, the CEO of Invest India, in Geneva at the inaugurations of the World Investment Forum organised by the UN Convention on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).


Fali S. Nariman conferred National Award



Eminent jurist Fali S. Nariman was awarded 19th Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence in Public Administration. He was presented the award by Vice President Venkaiah Naidu at a function held in New Delhi.

  • The award was instituted in 1999 by Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management in memory of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. The award consists of cash award of Rs. 5,00,000 plus citation and plaque.

Japanese Nobel Chemistry Laureate Shimomura Passes Away



Japanese-born Marine biologist Osamu Shimomura, who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry, has passed away. He was 90.

  • Shimomura and two American scientists shared the 2008 Nobel prize for the discovery and development of a jellyfish protein that later contributed to cancer studies.
