India aims to generate 40% power from non-fossil fuel by 2030

Stressing that India would generate 40 per cent of power from non-fossil fuels by 2030, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for connecting solar energy supply across borders giving the mantra of 'One World One Sun One Grid'.

  • He addressed the inaugural function of 2nd Global RE-Invest meeting of Indian Ocean Rim Association and the first assembly of International Solar Alliance (ISA) in New Delhi.


India ranked 5th in pictorial warnings on cigarette packets

India ranks fifth, jointly with Hong Kong and Thailand, in terms of the largest pictorial warning on cigarette packs with 85 per cent of both sides of the packets covered, a Canadian Cancer Society report said.

  • The Cigarette Package Health Warnings: International Status Report 2018 highlighted that 118 countries worldwide have made pictorial warnings mandatory.


India signs pact with ADB for safe drinking water in Bengal

India and Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $240 million loan agreement to provide safe drinking water to about 1.65 million people in three districts of West Bengal.

  • The agreement was signed by Ministry of Finance Additional Secretary Sameer Kumar Khare for the Indian government and ADB's India Resident Mission Country Director Kenichi Yokoyama for the multilateral lending agency.

India launches relief operation for tsunami-hit Indonesia

India has launched a massive operation to provide assistance to the earthquake and tsunami victims in Indonesia, dispatching two aircraft and three naval ships carrying relief material to the country.

  • 'Operation Samudra Maitri' for humanitarian assistance was launched on October 1, and following Indonesia's acceptance of international aid.

India's first dolphin research centre to come up soon in Patna

With the population of the endangered Gangetic river dolphin decreasing and its habitat changing, the much-awaited National Dolphin Research Centre (NDRC), India's and Asia's first, would be a reality in Patna on October 5.

  • NDRC is likely to be set up on the banks of the Ganga river in the Patna University premises. It will play an important role in strengthening conservation efforts and research to save the endangered mammal.


SIDBI Launched National Level Entrepreneurship Awareness Campaign 'Udyam Abhilasha'

SIDBI has launched a national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign 'Udyam Abhilasha', in 115 aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States reaching to around 15,000 youth.

  • SIDBI has partnered with Common service centres, e-Governance Services India Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle, set up by the Ministry of Electronics and IT for implementing the campaign.

Haryana's MDU declared cleanest govt university by HRD Ministry

Haryana’s Maharshi Dayanand University has been declared the cleanest government varsity by the HRD Ministry, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab’s Amritsar.

  • Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the “Swachh Campus rankings” under different categories.

  • The Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in the national capital has been ranked third among the government institutions.

  • Among the residential campuses of private universities, Pune’s Symbiosis International University has been ranked at the top followed by O P Jindal Global University in Sonipat, Haryana, KLE Academy of Higher Education and Research in Karnataka’s Belagavi and Manipal University in Jaipur.

  • Raipur’s ITM University has been ranked at the top among non-residential campuses of private universities.


Raje opens much-awaited Dravyavati river project

Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje inaugurated the city’s ‘Dravyavati River Rejuvenation Project’ executed by Tata Projects Ltd. spread over 47.5 km rain-fed riverfront.

  • For now, the 13-km stretch of Dravyavati riverfront out of total area of 47.5km has been opened for residents.


Tribals begin peace march from Andhra village

More than 150 tribals from the states affected by Maoist insurgency began a Shanti Padyatra or peace march from a village in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district to appeal to all sides to give peace a chance.

  • They will cover 186 km to end it at Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh after 10 days.

Veteran Kurdish leader Barham Salih has been elected as the President of Iraq.

  • Iraq's Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) selected Salih to take over from Fuad Masum.

IMF, World Bank and WTO Seek Removal of Barriers to Global Service Trade

The International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization collectively sought liberalisation of the global service sector, asserting that the barriers to these services trade currently is roughly as high as those to trade in goods about a half century ago.

  • The report "Reinvigorating Trade and Inclusive Growth" brought out collectively by the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO.

  • The report said that full services trade liberalisation could raise manufacturing productivity by an average of 22 per cent across a sample of 57 countries, with larger benefits for countries with stronger institutional environments.


Bank of Maharashtra closes 51 branches to cut costs

The Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) has announced the closure of 51 branches across the country as part of cost-cutting measures being implemented in the banking industry.

  • This is the first such measure initiated by any PSB in Maharashtra. The BoM has around 1,900 branches all over the country.

Tata Communications acquires IoT firm Teleena

Tata Communications, a leading global digital infrastructure provider, is acquiring Teleena, a Netherlands-based Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity specialist and mobile virtual network enabler (MVNE).

  • Teleena’s solution is a key part of the Tata Communications’ MOVE platform, which enables enterprises and device manufacturers to capture, move and manage information worldwide through borderless, secure and scalable connectivity.


Airtel Acquires Bengaluru-Based AI Start-Up AuthMe

Bharti Airtel has acquired technology of artificial intelligence (AI) service provider AuthMe ID Services.

  • The latest move will augment Airtel's initiatives to serve customers with new digital products.

Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev is retiring from international soccer after leading the national side as captain to this year’s World Cup quarter-finals on home soil.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi Sworn In As 46th Chief Justice of India

Justice Ranjan Gogoi was sworn-in as the 46th Chief Justice of India. He was administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind.

  • He is the first Chief Justice of India from the north-east and his tenure will end November next year.


Ravi Venkatesan appointed as UNICEF special representative

The UNICEF has appointed Ravi Venkatesan has its special representative of young people.

  • His new role will provide strategic guidance and support UNICEF globally with high-level outreach, partnerships and scaling innovations.

Nobel Prize for Chemistry goes to scientists from US, UK

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2018 was divided, one half awarded to Frances H. Arnold from US "for the directed evolution of enzymes", the other half jointly to George P. Smith from US and Sir Gregory P. Winter from UK "for the phage display of peptides and antibodies."

  • This year's Chemistry Laureates have taken control of evolution and used the same principles genetic change and selection to develop proteins that solve humankind's chemical problems.


Gandhiji to be posthumously honored with US Congressional Gold

US lawmakers, including four Indian Americans, have moved a resolution in the US House of Representatives to posthumously award the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal to Mahatma Gandhi in recognition of his promotion of peace and non-violence.

  • The Congressional Gold Medal is the highest civilian honour given by the US Congress and very few foreigners have been recipients of this award.
