India International Silk Fair starts in New Delhi
Union Minister Smriti Irani will inaugurate India International Silk Fair (IISF), a three-day event where over 108 exhibitors of silk and blended silk will display their produce in New Delhi.
- The IISF-2018 is expected to generate business of over $20 million for the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) engaged in producing silk and blended silk garments, fabrics, accessories and floor covering.
- India is the second largest producer of silk in the world. Over 218 buyers from various countries will participate in the fair. Artisans from Jammu & Kashmir and north-east will showcase their unique products from their region which will be an added attraction for buyers.
Korean War memorial to be built in Delhi
A Korean War memorial will be built in New Delhi to commemorate India’s role in the war that ended in an armistice in 1953.
- “India and South Korea have agreed to build a war memorial. The idea was proposed by the Korean War Veterans Association in India. The Delhi government had identified the land for the memorial in central Delhi.
Allahabad renamed as Prayagraj
The Uttar Pradesh government approved the proposal to rename Allahabad as 'Prayagraj'.
- The move was announced by Minister Siddharth Nath Singh. He said that all departments like Railways would be asked to change the name to Prayagraj from Allahabad.
- Earlier Chief minister Yogi Adityanth had announced that Allahabad would be renamed as Prayagraj ahead of the 2019 Kumbh Mela.
IRCTC gets a new AI-based assistant called 'Disha' to help resolve problems
IRCTC has launched a new AI-based assistant, Disha for their website. This new assistant will be prompt in answering generic queries about most frequently asked questions on the ticket booking platform. One can spot the new assistant at the bottom right of the screen on the new IRCTC website.
- The AI chatbot called Disha is powered by CoRover, a Bengaluru-based startup that owns the platform which is built on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Eventually, the chatbot will also be available on the IRCTC's Android application.
Government committed to achieving goal of zero hunger by 2030: Agriculture Minister
The government is continuously working on achieving the goal of zero hunger by 2030 in a systematic manner, Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh said.
- He said, this year’s world food day aims at showcasing centre’s global commitment towards zero hunger.
- Mr. Singh was addressing a two-day Agri-startup and Entrepreneurship Conclave in New Delhi on the occasion of World Food Day.
- Mr Singh said, 45 models on integrated farming for 15 different climate zones in the country have been devised. During the last four years agricultural production has increased manifold.
Govt announces Rs 100 crore award for states completing household electrification early under Saubhagya scheme
Government has announced 100 crore rupee award for states that would complete the household electrification early under the Saubhagaya scheme. Apart from discoms, employees would also collectively get 50 lakh rupees award for completing the task of electrifying households under the scheme which was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September last year.
- The decision was taken at a review meeting of the scheme in New Delhi yesterday, chaired by Power Minister RK Singh and attended by state representatives.
- The states are Gujarat, Punjab, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Himachal Pradesh.

ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company Managing Director and Chief Executive Nimesh Shah has been elected as the chairperson of industry body AMFI.
- Kailash Kulkarni, CEO of L&T Mutual Fund, continues to be the vice chairperson of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).

Govt hikes GPF interest rate to 8% for Oct-Dec quarter
The government has increased the rate of interest for General Provident Fund (GPF) and other related schemes by 0.4 percentage points to 8 per cent for the October-December quarter.
- The rate is in line with that for Public Provident Fund. The interest rate on GPF was 7.6 per cent for the July-September quarter of 2018-19.

India wins triangular series by thrashing Sri Lanka in Blind Cricket
The Indian blind cricket team has won the triangular series after beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the final in Goa. India skipper Ajay Reddy was adjudged Man of the Final for his bowling efforts against the Lankans in the final game of the series which also involved England.
- Indian skipper Ajay Reddy was adjudged man of the match for his fabulous bowling efforts.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen passes away
Paul G. Allen, who co-founded Microsoft with his childhood friend Bill Gates before becoming a billionaire philanthropist who invested in conservation, space travel, arts and culture and professional sports, passed away. He was 65.
- Allen was on the list of America’s wealthiest people who pledged to give away the bulk of their fortunes to charity.
