1st Trilateral Meeting Among India, Afghanistan And Iran Held in Tehran

India, Afghanistan and Iran held their first trilateral meeting on Chabahar port project during which they reviewed its implementation. The meeting assumes significance as the strategically-located port on the energy-rich Iran's southern coast was coming under the ambit of US sanctions on Tehran.

  • The Chabahar port is being considered a gateway to golden opportunities for trade by India, Iran and Afghanistan with central Asian countries.


PM Modi Launches 'Main Nahi Hum' Portal In New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underlined the importance of the people’s involvement and their social responsibilities for the success of any government initiative.

  • Prime Minister Modi said this while interacting with IT professionals in Delhi. He also launched a portal and app, Main Nahin Hum, which will enable IT professionals and organisations to bring their efforts towards social causes and service to society on one single platform.


India has most outward migrants in 2017, says ADB report

Most of the international migrants in 2017 were from India, followed by China and Bangladesh, an Asian Development Bank (ADB) report titled 'Asian Economic Integration Report 2018' said. The report further said as many as one third of international migrants were from Asia in 2017.

  • According to the report, Asia continued as the largest source of international migrants globally although the number of Asian migrants headed to regional destinations declined slightly.


Centre constitutes 4-member GoM to crackdown on workplace sexual harassment

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government constituted a four member Group of Ministers headed by Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh "to strengthen the legal and institutional frameworks to deal with and prevent sexual harassment at workplace.

  • Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Defence Nirmala Sitharamanand Union Minister of Women and Child Development Maneka Sanjay Gandhi are the other members of the GoM.


Cabinet okays BRICS nations' pact on cooperation in social, labour sphere

The Union Cabinet approved an agreement signed among BRICS nations for cooperation in the social and labour sphere. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its approval for the Memorandum of Understanding among India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa, regarding cooperation in the social and labour sphere.

  • The MoU was signed on August 3 during the BRICS Labour and Employment Ministers (LEM) meeting in Durban, South Africa. The agreement provides for a mechanism for cooperation, collaboration and synergy among BRICS member countries with the common objective of inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the new industrial revolution.


Global Agriculture Leadership Summit 2018 opens in New Delhi

The Global Agriculture Leadership Summit 2018 opened in New Delhi. The theme of the 2-day summit is, 'Connecting Farmers to Market'. Inaugurating the summit, Secretary Agriculture and Co-operation Sanjay Agrawal said, several measures are being taken to double farmers' income by 2022.

  • He said good strategy, adequate resources and good governance will be crucial to achieve the target. Pioneer of India's green revolution Professor MS Swaminathan was also present on the occasion.


Hry govt to introduce livestock veterinary scheme

Haryana Government has decided to introduce “Pashu Sanjeevni Sewa” in the state under which free of cost quality veterinary services and health care facilities for the livestock would be made available at the doorstep of livestock farmers through mobile veterinary clinics. To begin with, this service would be started in all blocks of three districts namely Jind, Yamunanagar and Nuh .

  • It was informed that the livestock farmers would be able to avail the service of mobile veterinary clinics 24x7 after giving a call on toll free number 1962.

  • One mobile vehicle would be pressed into service in each block of these three districts to provide emergency veterinary services and health care facilities to the livestock.


Coast Guard Training Ship ICGS Varuna Launched

Anil Ambani-led shipbuilder Reliance Naval and Engineering (RNEL) launched a 3,000-tonne training ship for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), which will be delivered in May next year.

  • The 105-metre long training vessel, the largest ship ever built for the ICG, at the cost of Rs 220 crore, is named 'ICGS Varuna', and was launched at the shipyard of RNEL at the Pipavav Port in Amreli district of Gujarat.

2018 UN Day Concert Held In New York

The 2018 UN Day Concert will be held in the General Assembly Hall at United Nations Headquarters in New York. Soulful music from the strings of the sarod maestro Amjad Ali Khan will reverberate in the iconic Assembly hall. 

  • The theme of this year’s concert, which is sponsored by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, is “Traditions of Peace and Non-violence”


Hurricane Willa hits Mexican coast

Hurricane Willa swept onto Mexico’s Pacific mainland with 195 kph winds, hitting an area of beach towns, fishing villages and farms after roaring over an offshore penal colony. The US National Hurricane Center said the dangerous Category 3 storm hit near Isla del Bosque in Sinaloa state, Mexico.

Syndicate Bank gets Rs 728-cr capital infusion from government

Public sector Syndicate Bank said it has received capital infusion of Rs 728 crore from the government in lieu of preferential allotment of shares. The bank will be taking necessary approvals for allotment of requisite equity shares to the government in due course of time.

    As part of PSBs' recapitalisation, the government in October 2017 had announced a massive Rs 2.1 lakh crore infusion in the course of 2017-18 and 2018-19 with the objective of strengthening them in the face of mounting non-performing assets (NPAs).


RBI Lifts The Ban On Fino Payments Bank To Open New Accounts

After almost five months of being barred from adding new customers, Fino Payments Bank, one of India’s first payments banks has been allowed to open new accounts by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) after it submitted the compliance report to the central bank.

  • Fino Payments Bank had been unable to enrol new customers since the end of May after RBI found the bank to be non-compliant with the operational guidelines laid down by it.

  • Extra info.:
    Fino Payments Bank, which was a remittance service provider, received the RBI nod to operate as a bank in March 2017. It started operations in September after its launch in July last year.

Kohli Becomes Fastest to Reach 10,000 Runs in History of ODI Cricket



Virat Kohli is now the fastest man in the history of ODI cricket to reach 10,000 runs. The Indian skipper reached the landmark on his way to his 37th ODI ton in the Vizag ODI against the West Indies.

  • He has reached the 10,000-run mark in 205 innings, which is 54 fewer than 'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar who held the record earlier.

  • Virat Kohli is also the fastest in terms of time taken to score the runs as he reached the milestone in 10 years and 67 days.

  • Kohli is fifth Indian to reach the milestone and join an elite club dominated by Asian players. He joins Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly among Indians to score 10,000 career runs in ODIs. Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Brian Lara are the only players from non-Asian sides.


Liuzhou International Challenger: Prajnesh Gunneswaran wins in the men's singles

Seventh seed Indian Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India defeated Johan Tatlot of France in closely contested straight sets 6-4, 7-5 in the men's singles of the 50,000 dollar in Liuzhou International Challenger in Guangyuan city, China.

North East Olympics begins in Imphal

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh declared open the first edition of North East Olympic Games 2018 at Main Stadium Khuman Lampak Sports Complex, Imphal.

  • The Games is being organized by the MOA under the aegis of the North East Olympic Association.

  • Around 2000 thousand athletes will compete in 12 disciplines including Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Boxing, Football, Judo, Karate-Do, Shooting, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Weightlifting and Wushu.

Govt appoints Nageshwar Rao as interim CBI director



The Centre has intervened to stabilise the Central Bureau of Investigation by appointing M Nageswar Rao as the interim Director, CBI. Rao is presently the Joint Director, CBI. He is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the 1986 batch. He joined the CBI in 2016.

Rohini Bopanna Appointed Hockey's International Technical Official

Hockey India congratulated Rohini Bopanna on being promoted as FIH International Technical Official by the FIH Officials Committee.

  • Earlier this year, Bopanna was also appointed as a technical official for the 5th Women's Asian Champions Trophy 2018 held in Donghae City, South Korea.

India wins Investment Promotion Award

Invest India, the country’s investment promotion body, has won the UN Award for excellence in promoting investments in sustainable development. The award was presented by Armenian President Armen Sarkissian to Deepak Bagla, the CEO of Invest India, at the World Investment Forum, Geneva.

  • The awards, organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), honour investment promotion agencies (IPAs) and their governments for their achievements.

  • Invest India is set up as a non-profit venture under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.


PM Narendra Modi awarded Seoul Peace Prize 2018

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the Seoul Peace Prize for 2018 for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth.

  • The Ministry of External Affairs said that Modi expressed his gratitude for the prestigious honour and in the 'light of India' deepening partnership with the Republic of Korea, he has accepted the award.

  • While conferring the award on Modi, the award committee recognised his contribution to the growth of Indian and global economies, crediting 'Modinomics' for reducing social and economic disparity between the rich and the poor.

  • Extra info.:
    The Seoul Peace Prize was established in 1990 to commemorate the success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul. The award was established to crystalise Korean people's yearning for peace on the Korean peninsula and in the rest of the world.


M.S. Swaminathan to be awarded World Agriculture Prize



Agricultural scientist M.S. Swaminathan will receive the first World Agriculture Prize instituted by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture (ICFA) in New Delhi.

  • The prize will be presented by Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu at Vigyan Bhawan at a special session, named Swaminathan Global Dialogue on Climate Change and Food Security organised by the Indian Council of Food and Agriculture.

  • The prize has been instituted by the ICFA with an aim to recognise individuals who have served humanity through agriculture. It will carry a cash component of $1,00,000.


Tezpur University professor bags INSA Teachers Award

Tezpur University professor Ashis Mukherjee has been awarded the prestigious “Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Teachers Award (2018)” for his consistent and high-level of teaching, and inspiring and mentoring students to take up careers in Science and Technology.

  • The award founded by INSA, New Delhi is one of the highest recognition for science and technology teachers in the country. He will be formally conferred the award at the Anniversary General Meeting of the Academy in December 2018.


Benyamin bags India's richest book prize

Benyamin, the author of ‘Jasmine Days’, translated from Malayalam into English by Shahnaz Habib, is the winner of the first edition of the Rs 25 lakh JCB Prize for Literature, India’s richest literary prize.

  • The award was announced at a specially curated dinner event in New Delhi. ‘Jasmine Days’ is published by Juggernaut Books.

  • The book was first published in Malayalam in 2014 as Mullappoo Niramulla Pakalukal and then translated into English by Shahnaz Habib.
