PM Modi Unveils Chhotu Ram's Statue At Hooda Family Turf In Haryana's Rohtak

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 64-foot-tall statue of peasant leader Sir Chhotu Ram at his native village Sampla in Haryana's Rohtak district.

  • Sir Chhotu Ram, who was born on November 24, 1881, was regarded as a messiah of peasants and was instrumental in empowering farmers in pre-Independence era and getting pro-farmers law enacted. He had fought for farmers' rights during the British rule.


Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium dedicated to people in Sri Lanka

The Rabindranath Tagore Memorial Auditorium built with Indian grant assistance of Rs. 300 million at the University of Ruhuna, Matara in the Southern Province, was dedicated to the people of Sri Lanka.

  • The auditorium named after Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore is a symbol of cultural links with India.


Jharkhand to become partner state at Goa International Film Festival

This year Goa International Film Festival from 20th to 28th of November will have Jharkhand as a partner state.

  • It was also decided to organize Jharkhand Film Festival, under Indian Panorama, in two towns of Jharkhand in the first month of next year.


Arunachal Pradesh govt launches Chief Minister’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana and Chief Minister’s Krishi Samuh Yojana in Itanagar

Arunachal Pradesh Government launched the Chief Minister’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana and Chief Minister’s Krishi Samuh Yojana in Itanagar.

  • The Chief Minister’s Sashakt Kisan Yojana will subsume three state flagship programmes, namely CM’s Employment Generation Scheme, CM’s Agri-Mechanization Programme and CM’s Flagship Programme on Tea and Rubber.

  • The Chief Minister’s Krishi Samuh Yojana aims at empowering the farmers through cooperative approach, by providing timely supports and marketing interventions of the government for better price realization and doubling farmers’ income.


Chhattisgarh's Veena Sendre is country's first Trans Queen

Veena Sendre from Chhattisgarh has been chosen as India's first Miss Trans Queen .

  • She defeated Namita Ammu of Tamil Nadu to claim the title at the national-level beauty contest organised in Mumbai. Her victory is being seen as a big fillip to the trangender community in the country.


Maharashtra govt launches website, application to analyse drought situation

The Maharashtra government launched a website and a mobile application which will use modern technology to analyse the drought situation in the state by collecting data on rainfall, crop situation and underground water.

  • The state relief and rehabilitation ministry created the website called Maha Madat with the help of the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC).

Nikki Haley resigns as US ambassador to UN

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley resigned directly to President Donald Trump. She served as US Ambassador to the United Nations since 2017.

  • At United Nations, she has been a vocal critic of Russia and a supporter of US sanctions. She will continue as the US Ambassador to the United Nations till the end of the year.


Hurricane Michael hits Cuba

Hurricane Michael hits the western tip of Cuba with strong winds and heavy rains as it whipped through the Yucatan Channel on its way to the Gulf of Mexico.

  • The nation's Civil Defense agency issued a hurricane warning for those two territories and maintained a hurricane watch for the western provinces of Artemisa, Mayabeque and the capital Havana.


Global sea level could rise 50 feet by 2300: Study

Global average sea-level could rise by nearly eight feet by 2100 and 50 feet by 2300 if greenhouse gas emissions remain high.

  • Since the start of the century, global average sea-level has risen by about 0.2 feet, said researchers at the Rutgers University in the US.

  • From 2000 to 2050, global average sea-level will most likely rise about 6 to 10 inches, but is extremely unlikely to rise by more than 18 inches, they said.


Pakistan Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Ghauri Ballistic Missile

Pakistan successfully test-fired Ghauri ballistic missile which is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads up to a distance of 1,300 kilometers.

  • The launch was conducted by Army Strategic Forces Command and was aimed at testing the operational and technical readiness of Army Strategic Forces Command.

IMF retains India's growth rate at 7.3% in 2018

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has retained its India growth forecast for the current year and marginally pared it for next fiscal, citing the drag from higher crude prices and tightening of the global financial situation.

  • In its latest World Economic Outlook, the IMF said India will grow 7.3% in FY19 and 7.4% in FY20.


LinkedIn acquires employee engagement firm Glint

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has acquired Glint, a California-based employee engagement company that helps organisations get feedback from employees.

  • The acquisition, the financials of which were not disclosed, is expected to close during the second fiscal quarter of 2019 which ends on December 31.


Google+ to shut down amid security concerns

Google's social network, Google +, was announced by the tech giant to be shutting down over a reported failure to reveal a security issue that affected hundreds of thousands of accounts.

  • The announcement came in the wake of a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report stating that in order to avert any scrutiny from regulatory authorities, Google did not reveal a security bug that affected hundreds of thousands of Google+ accounts.

Caroline Wozniacki wins her 30th WTA singles title

Caroline Wozniacki won her 30th WTA singles title with victory over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in the China Open final in Beijing.

  • The 28-year-old Wozniacki, who won her maiden Grand Slam at the Australian Open at the start of this year, was imperious against the unseeded Sevastova, winning 6-3, 6-3. It is her second China Open crown as she also won it in 2010.


Asian Para Games: Raju Rakshitha, Jadhav Suyash Narayan, Manish Narwal and Ekta Bhyan win Gold in different events



India bagged three more gold with two coming from athletics in a rich haul of 11 medals to maintain its eighth spot on the third day of competitions at the Para Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia.

  • Ekta Bhyan and Narayan Thakur clinched a gold each in women’s club throw event and men’s dash respectively while para-shooter Manish Narwal bagged the yellow metal in the men’s SH1 10m air pistol event.

Dakar to host 2022 Youth Olympic Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) had announced that the fourth edition of the Youth Olympic Games will be held in Dakar, Senegal.

  • The Dakar 2022 Youth Games will be the first-ever Olympic event in Africa.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins India's first-ever gold medal at Youth Olympics



India won their first gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifting 150kg in Men’s 62kg weightlifting on his last attempt for a combined 274kg. This is India’s first-ever gold medal at the Youth Olympics.

Thangjam Tababi Devi clinches India's first judo medal at Youth Olympics

Thangjam Tababi Devi became India’s first judo medallist at the Olympic level, claiming a silver at the ongoing Youth Games after losing to Venezuela’s Maria Giminez in the finals of the women’s 44kg category.

  • Tababi Devi, an Asian cadet champion hailing from Manipur.

  • India have never won an Olympic medal in judo either at the senior or the youth level.

Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka nominated for WTA Player of the Year

World Number one Simona Halep and Japan's Naomi Osaka are among the players nominated for the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Player of the Year award.

  • Other nominees for the prize are Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki. The winners of the awards will be declared on 19 October.

OBITUARIES


Well-known Malayalam poet M N Paloor passes away

Well-known Malayalam poet M N Paloor passed away at his residence at Kovoor in Kozhikode.

  • Paloor received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his autobiography 'Kathayillathavante Katha' in 2013. He also won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1983 for his collection 'Kalikalam'.

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in the Swiss Capital, Bern. It started in 1969. Since then, countries all over the world take part in celebrations to highlight the importance of the postal service.
