Rs 469-cr revival plan approved for Nepa Ltd

The government has approved a Rs 469.41 crore package for the revival of closed NEPA mill in Madhya Pradesh, Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

  • NEPA Ltd is a public sector newsprint company, incorporated in 1947.


Govt unveils Digi Yatra, facial recognition system that allows entry into airports

Travellers will soon be able to enter airports in the country with facial recognition biometric under the government’s Digi Yatra initiative.

  • Facial recognition biometric feature would be optional for air passengers. Digi Yatra initiative seeks to promote paperless and hassle-free air travel.

  • The Airports Authority of India (AAI) plans to roll out the initiative at Kolkata, Varanasi, Pune and Vijayawada airports by April next year.


Russian President Vladimir Putin visits to India

After wide-ranging talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin, Indian and Russia signed the USD 5.4 billion S-400 air defence system deal in New Delhi.

  • Modi and Putin also signed eight pacts, including on cooperation on India’s ambitious human space mission project Gaganyaan, at the 19th India-Russia annual bilateral summit.


India, Russia ink action plan to set up 6 more n-reactors in India

India and Russia signed a document for cooperation on a new nuclear power project in India with the latest VVER-1200 type reactors powered by advanced fuel.

  • The action plan document was signed by India's Department of Atomic Energy Secretary Kamlesh Vyas and Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev on the sidelines of 19th India-Russia annual bilateral summit in New Delhi.


India to expect 10 per cent rise in salary in 2019, highest increase in Asia Pacific

Salaries in India are projected to rise 10% in 2019, same as the actual increase in 2018, according to the latest Q3 2018 Salary Budget Planning Report released by Willis Towers Watson, the global advisory, broking and solutions company.

  • The report projects salary increase for Indonesia at 8.3%, China at 6.9%, The Philippines at 6%, and Hong Kong and Singapore both at 4%.


President Kovind inaugurates science festival in Lucknow

The fourth edition of the India International Science Festival (IISF) began in Lucknow. A number of conferences and exhibitions showcasing of the work of young scientists were held.

  • He will inaugurate the Mega Science Expo on 6 October.

  • The four-day festival with focal theme “Science for Transformation” features 23 special events.


Maharashtra's Satara tops all India cleanliness ranking

Ghaziabad has topped in Uttar Pradesh and secured 11th position across India in a cleanliness survey conducted by an independent agency appointed under the Centre's Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

  • Satara in Maharashtra stood first in the all-India cleanliness ranking in a survey of 685 districts across the country.


India to be guest of honour at Mexico's international cultural fest

The 46th edition of Cervantino International Festival, to be held in Mexico, will see India participating as a guest of honour, with an elaborate programme of performing arts.

  • The nearly three-week long festival will kick off on October 10 in the heritage city of Guanajuato in Mexico.


WhatsApp, Jio campaign for responsible app use

Facebook-owned WhatsApp and Reliance Jio started a campaign to train people about using the mobile messaging platform responsibly on their JioPhones.

  • Starting October 9, WhatsApp and Jio would visit 10 cities in different states including Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan for street plays and engage users to guide them on meaningful and positive ways of WhatsApp use.


India Chem 2018 Conference Begins in Mumbai

India Chem 2018, the 10th Biennial International Exhibition & Conference began in Mumbai.

  • The largest event of Chemicals and Petrochemical Industry in India will continue till 6 October.Union Road, Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the conference.


36th National Games To Be Held Next Year In Goa

The much-delayed 36th National Games in Goa will be held from March 30 to April 14 next year. Opening and Closing ceremonies will be held at PJN Stadium, Fatorda.

  • Shooting and cycling events will be held in New Delhi as Goa does not have facilities for these two sports.
    Five sports Rugby, Wushu, Modern Penthatlon, Lawn Bowl, and Billiards and Snooker will be added in the Games programme.


GI Tag for Alphonso Mango From Konkan

Alphonso Mango from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and other adjoining areas in Maharashtra, finally gets a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.

  • A Geographical Indication or a GI is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.

Watch: World's first full-sized Hyperloop capsule unveiled in Spain



The world's first full-sized Hyperloop passenger capsule has been unveiled in Spain giving those in attendance a glimpse of the future.

  • California based company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (Hyperloop TT) revealed the slimline capsule, which can reach speeds of 1,220 kilometres per hour.

RBI holds repo rate, but changes stance to 'calibrated tightening'

Reserve Bank has maintained status quo on all key policy rates in the fourth bi-monthly monetary policy review. The six member monetary policy committee, MPC headed by Governor Urjit Patel decided to keep the policy repo rate unchanged at 6.5 percent and the reverse repo rate at 6.25 percent.

  • The RBI has changed its stance to calibrated tightening of monetary policy in consonance with the objective of achieving the medium-term target for headline inflation of 4 percent while supporting growth.










BUSINESS & ECONOMY


India moves up to 28th rank in govt e-payment adoption: Survey

According to a survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit commissioned by payments company Visa, India's overall ranking on the government's adoption of e-payments has moved up to 28th in 2018, from 36th in 2011.

  • Norway leads the pack in the 73-country ranking, followed by France and Denmark.


UNCTAD expects India's GDP to rise 7% in 2018

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in its Trade and Development Report predicted the GDP growth of India for 2018 to be at 7%. Previously in 2017, it was 6.2%.

World Bank: East Asia-Pacific to grow 6.3% in 2018

Developing countries of the East Asia and Pacific region will grow at 6.3 per cent in 2018, the World Bank has said.The outlook for the region remained positive despite a lower growth prospect than in 2017 owing to a moderation in China's growth.

  • The October 2018 edition of the World Bank East Asia and Pacific Economic Update also warned of uncertainty in the region owing to trade tensions.


Reliance Health Insurance gets R3 licence from IRDAI

Reliance Capital Ltd. said its wholly owned Reliance Health Insurance has got the R3 approval from Insurance Regulatory Authority of India (IRDAI).

  • Reliance Capital said the health insurance company would start operations by the December quarter of 2018.

Virat Kohli becomes fastest batsman to score 24 Test hundreds since Don Bradman

India captain Virat Kohli became the quickest batsman to reach 24 Test centuries after the great Donald Bradman early on day two against the West Indies.

  • The Indian skipper also surpassed Australia's Steve Smith to go second in the list of centurions among active players, behind South Africa's Hashim Amla on 28.

Ramon Laguarta succeeds Pepsico's Indian-origin CEO Indra Nooyi

Ramon Laguarta assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of global beverage giant PepsiCo, succeeding India-born Indra Nooyi who had helmed the American company for 12 years.

  • Nooyi will remain Chairman until early 2019 to ensure a smooth and seamless transition.

Nobel peace prize goes to campaigners against sexual violence

The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to a Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege and an Iraqi woman Nadia Murad for their efforts to end sexual violence as a weapon of war.

Ruhaan Rajput bags recognition at Mid-day Young Achiever Icons Award 2018

Ruhaan Rajput, a multi-talented young actor bagged an award at the recently concluded Mid-day Young Achiever Icons Award 2018. The event took place at the Grand Hyatt, Mumbai.

  • The award was presented to him in the film and television category for his work in the industry in a short span of time.

Reliance Industries’ Chairman Mukesh Ambani has emerged as the richest Indian for the 11th consecutive year with a net worth of $47.3 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

  • As per the ‘Forbes India Rich List 2018’, Wipro Chairman Azim Premji has retained the second spot while ArcelorMittal Chairman and CEO Lakshmi Mittal moved a place ahead to the third slot.










OBITUARIES


Oscar-winning animator Will Vinton passes away at 70

Oscar-winning animator Will Vinton passed away at the age of 70. He was battling with multiple myeloma for 12 years.

  • Having worked in more than a hundred films, Vinton won an Oscar for the 1975 short animated film "Closed Mondays".


Girl in iconic 'Glow of Hope' painting dies at 102



The girl holding the lamp in the celebrated painting `Glow of Hope', also known as the Woman With the Lamp, has died at 102.

  • Gita Uplekar died in Kolhapur, Maharashtra after a brief illness.

  • The painting, a watercolour masterpiece by S L Haldankar, is now housed in the Jaychama Rajendra Art Gallery at the Jaganmohan Palace in Mysuru, Karnataka. It is one of the most prized possessions as well as a  major attraction at the gallery.

World Teachers' Day 2018

World Teachers' Day, also known as International Teachers' Day, is observed on October 5 every year. World Teachers' Day focuses on "appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world" and to provide an opportunity to address issues related to teachers and teaching.

  • This year's World Teachers' Day theme is : "The right to education means the right to a qualified teacher".
