Government announces 27% reservation for OBCs, 10% quota for EWS in medical seats
Twenty-seven percent of the all-India quota admissions for medical and dental courses will be reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) starting this academic year, the Union health ministry said. An additional 10% will be reserved for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS).
  • The reservations will be implemented in all undergraduate and postgraduate medical and dental courses.
  • The decision will benefit nearly 1,500 OBC students seeking to join MBBS courses and 2,500 backward category students in postgraduate courses. It will also benefit around 550 EWS students in MBBS and around 1,000 EWS students in postgraduate courses.
Govt releases Rs 8257.88 cr to States, UTs towards India Covid-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package in 2020-21
The Government has released 8257.88 crore to the States and Union Territories towards the India Covid-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package during 2020-21. Similarly, 1113.21 crore rupees was released during the financial year 2019-20.
  • 23 thousand 123 crores rupees approved by the Cabinet under India Covid-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package- Phase-II to be implemented from 1st July 2021 to 31st March 2022.
  • This includes 15 thousand crore as Central Component and 8123 crore as State component.
Kerala Police launch Pink project for women safety
 
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan formally rolled out the Kerala Police’s Pink Protection Project that aims at protecting women in public, private, and digital spaces.
  • He flagged off a horde of dedicated vehicles, including 10 cars, 40 motorcycles, and 20 bicycles outside the State Police Headquarters to launch the Statewide project.
  • The endeavour comes amid increasing complaints of dowry-related atrocities and other forms of harassment against women and children. Cybercrime too comes under the purview of the scheme, which has 10 components including Pink Patrol, Pink Janamaithri beat, Pink control room, Pink Shadow, Pink Romeo, counselling facilities and a dedicated mobile application for women protection.

India Set to Take Over as President of UN Security Council for Month of August
India will take over the Presidency of the UN Security Council on August 1 and is set to host signature events in three major areas of maritime security, peacekeeping and counterterrorism during the month.
  • India’s two-year tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council began on January 1, 2021.The August presidency will be India’s first Presidency during its 2021-22 tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

Paytm Payments Bank crosses 1-crore FASTags mark
Paytm Payments Bank said it has become the first bank in the country to achieve the milestone of issuing 1 crore FASTags. According to NPCI, over 3.47 crore FASTags were issued by all banks together till the end of June 2021.
  • Besides this, Paytm Payments Bank is also India's largest acquirer of toll plazas for the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program offering an interoperable nationwide toll payment solution.
  • Paytm Payments Bank is also working closely with NHAI for testing and implementing multi-lane free-flow movement using automatic number plate recognition technology.
SWIFT launches SWIFT Go, a fast, cost-effective service for low-value cross-border payments
SWIFT announced the launch of SWIFT Go, a new service that enables small businesses and consumers to send fast, predictable, highly secure, and competitively priced low-value cross-border payments anywhere in the world, direct from their bank accounts.
  • The new service is a direct response to the needs of small businesses and consumers for fast, easy, predictable, secure and competitively priced cross-border payments.
  • It will allow banks to compete effectively in one of the fastest growing segments of the payments market, delivering a seamless experience for their customers.
ICICI Lombard, SVAAS Wellness tie up for cashless outpatient services
ICICI Lombard General Insurance Company and Dr Reddy's Laboratories-owned SVAAS Wellness have joined hands to offer cashless outpatient services to health insurance policyholders.
  • The partnership marks the launch of Dr Reddy's digital health solution SVAAS and demonstrates ICICI Lombard's deeper foray into the wellness space.
  • It is a first-of-its-kind integrated and cashless digital health solution in India, the statement said. To begin with, there will be pilot launch of the service in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam.
Prest Loans and U GRO Capital join hands to solve the MSME credit gap in Tier 3 and 4 cities
Delhi based, MSME focused, digital lender Prest Loans (https://www.prestloans.com) has signed up a strategic alliance agreement with Mumbai based U GRO Capital (https://www.ugrocapital.com), a BSE listed technology enabled NBFC, to provide secured business loans to Micro SME business units. 
  • Under this arrangement Prest Loans shall offer U GRO Capital's 'GRO Micro' product to its small businesses and MSME customers in tier 3 and tier 4 cities who lack the access to formal credit at affordable price without requirement of too many documents.
Digital payments grew 30.2% in FY21, says RBI
Digital payments have recorded a growth of 30.19 per cent during the year ended March 2021, reflecting adoption and deepening of cashless transactions in the country, RBI data showed.
  • As per the newly constituted Digital Payments Index (RBI-DPI), the index rose to 270.59 at the end of March 2021, up from 207.84 a year ago.
  • The RBI-DPI index has demonstrated significant growth in the index representing the rapid adoption and deepening of digital payments across the country in recent years.
IFC invests ₹916 crore in Federal Bank for 4.99% stake
IFC, along with two investment funds managed by IFC Asset Management Company (IFC Financial Institutions Growth Fund and IFC Emerging Asia Fund) have picked up 4.99 per cent stake in Federal Bank for ₹916 crore.
  • The investment will support Federal Bank’s commitment to environmental social and governance (ESG) standards, and also strengthen its Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio (CAR) and expand its micro, small and medium sized enterprises (MSME) and climate finance portfolios.
RBI cancels Gos based Madgaum Urban Co-op Bank licence
Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the licence of Goa-based Madgaum Urban Cooperative Bank, with effect from July 29, 2021.
  • RBI said the decision was taken as the bank doesn't have adequate capital and earning prospects, and its would be unable to pay its present depositors in full in its present financial position.

Intel launches 'AI For All' initiative in partnership with CBSE Chipmaker Intel said it has collaborated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to launch the ‘AI For All’ initiative, aimed at creating a basic understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) for people in India.
  • Based on Intel's ‘AI For Citizens’ programme, 'AI For All' is a 4-hour, self-paced learning programme that demystifies AI in an inclusive manner.
  • The four-hour open content resource, which is available in 11 vernacular languages, is divided into two sections – AI Awareness (1.5 hours) and AI Appreciation (2.5 hours).
  • The programme aims to introduce AI to one million citizens in its first year.
Maruti Suzuki, Savitribai Phule Pune University tie-up to train youth
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced a partnership with Maharashtra’s Savitribai Phule Pune University to train youth in automobile retail.
  • The aim is to offer a customised three years “Bachelor of Vocational Studies in Retail Management” course to students.
  • The three-year curriculum will comprise one-year classroom training followed by two-year on-the-job training at Maruti Suzuki authorised dealerships.
Skylo, FISHCOPFED tie up to improve fishermen safety, profitability
Skylo, an internet of things (IoT)-based solutions provider, said it has partnered with the National Federation of Fishers Cooperatives in India (FISHCOPFED) to improve the safety of fishermen, increase their profitability and bolster ecosystem sustainability.
  • Skylo will provide IoT-based solutions to marine fishing and aquaculture sectors, including monitoring oxygen and pH levels of water in ponds across the states (aquaculture and inland fisheries) and enhancing fish yields and profitability for the fish farmers.
  • As part of the partnership, Skylo and FISHCOPFED will work together to improve the welfare of fishermen and fish farmers to increase profits for the fishing community by using IoT technology.

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid was elected as the President of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly.

Pham Minh Chinh re-elected as Vietnamese Prime Minister
The 15th National Assembly (NA) of Vietnam re-elected Pham Minh Chinh as the Vietnamese Prime Minister for the 2021-2026 tenure, according to voting results.
  • Chinh, also a member of the Politburo of the 13th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC), was re-elected with a 95.99-per cent approval rate among deputies at the ongoing first session of the 15th NA.

NSDL e-Governance develops cab-hailing platform on open-source tech
NSDL e-Governance Infrastructure Limited is developing the world's first cab-hailing platform, which is enabled by open-source specifications.
  •  What makes this project distinct from the private cab-hailing platforms already in the market, such as Uber and Ola are that, unlike these enterprises where the company serves as the central aggregator, NSDL’s platform allows various enterprises, cab companies, individual players to access the platform on their own accord using open-source technologies.
  • NSDL e-Gov will be using Beckn protocols, which is an open protocol that enables local commerce across industries to be discovered and engaged by any Beckn-enabled application. he key to plug into a wide network.
IIT Hyderabad develops Covihome, a rapid electronic Covid-19 RNA test kit
A team of researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad led by Prof Shiv Govind Singh, Department of Electrical Engineering, has developed an Artificial Intelligence-powered Covid-19 test that can be performed at an affordable cost at home, after commercialisation and required ICMR approval. 
  • This test kit can produce results within 30 minutes for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients.
  • It does not require RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction), an expert human resource, and a BSL 2 lab facility for the extraction of RNA, so it has the potential for one to take the test at home without expert supervision.


OBITUARIES

Former England bowler Mike Hendrick passes away
Former England seamer Mike Hendrick passed at the age of 72.
  • He played a major role in two of England’s Ashes-series victories and took 87 wickets in 30 Tests for his country between 1974 and 1981.
  • Hendrick, who took 770 wickets in 267 first-class matches and 35 wickets in 22 ODIs, was also the first professional coach of Ireland
Ganpatrao Deshmukh, Maharashtra's Longest-serving MLA and Former Minister, Passes Away at 94
Ganpatrao Deshmukh, the longest-serving MLA of Maharashtra and a senior leader of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), died in a private hospital in Solapur. He was 94.
  • Deshmukh represented Sangola in Solapur district in the state legislative assembly for 11 terms since 1962 across multiple terms and served as an MLA for 54 years. He got defeated in 1972, but again won in a bypoll n 1974. In 1995, he lost by a slender margin of 192 votes, said his grandson Aniket Deshmukh.He had won the Sangola seat in the 2014 state elections for a record 11th time and served in the assembly till 2019.
  • Deshmukh also served as a minister in the government of Sharad Pawar in 1978 and again in 1999 (in Vilasrao Deshmukh cabinet) when his party PWP gave support to the Congress-NCP alliance.

Ministry of S&T to set up first-its-kind Centre of Excellence in Northeast
The Ministry of Science and Technology is setting up a first-of-its-kind Centre of Excellence in the Northeast. 
  • The project for establishing the Centre for Bio-Resources and Sustainable Development as a Centre of Excellence was sanctioned by the Department of Biotechnology and is complete for formal inauguration soon.
  • Built at a cost of nearly Rs 50 crore, the project will come up at Kimin in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh and the construction of the new building as well other infrastructure has been completed.
Centre to invest Rs324 crore to expand laboratory testing infrastructure
The Union government will set up over 42 virology research and diagnostic laboratories under a central scheme during the period of 15th Finance Commission (2021-22 to 2025-26) at a cost of Rs324 crore.
  • The scheme under the Department of Health Research (DHR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) aims to help boost coverage of timely diagnosis and identification of viruses during an epidemic outbreak, generation of data about viral diseases for facilitating quick deployment of resources and measures to save human lives.
Around 1.13 cr houses sanctioned under PMAY-Urban till date: Govt
Government has said that around one crore 13 lakh houses have been sanctioned under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban till date.
  • Out of them more than 84 lakh houses are grounded and more than 50 lakh have been completed and delivered to the beneficiaries.
  • Central assistance of one lakh 82 thousand crore rupees has been approved under the scheme so far. More than one lakh crore rupees have been released to States, Union Territories and Central Nodal Agencies.
Govt announced fund of Rs 29.87 lakh crore under Atmanirbhar Bharat package as a relief for several sectors
Over 17,500 companies have been struck off as per provisions of section 248 of the Companies act during the period of March 2020 to June 2021.
  • The Government has announced fund of 29.87 lakh crore rupees under Atmanirbhar Bharat package as a relief for several sectors.
  • Besides initiatives of RBI several relief measures have been announced by the Government under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package.
Assam CM lays foundation stone of Bamboo Industrial Park in DIma Hasao  
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of a Bamboo Industrial Park at Manderdisa in Dima Hasao district. The project will be implemented with Rs. 50 crores from DoNER Ministry.
  • The project, once completed, would usher in a new era in the economy of the region and create vast employment opportunities for the local youth.
Madhya Pradesh govt prepares Ayush-based economic upgradation scheme – Devaranya Yojana
In Madhya Pradesh, the State Government has prepared the Ayush-based economic upgradation scheme – Devaranya Yojana with the twin objectives of improving people’s health and livelihood of tribals.
  • For this, medicinal plants should be cultivated in the beautiful plains of the villages. He was addressing a workshop on the scheme. AIR correspondent reports that Chief Minister said that more than 360 new AYUSH health and wellness centers are being established in the state.
  • Ayush Super Specialty Hospitals are being constructed in Indore and Bhopal.
Rajasthan launches 'Niryatak Bano' mission to help local traders take businesses aboard
Rajasthan government's Industries Department and the apex industrial development body, the Rajasthan Industrial Development and Investment Corporation (RIICO), have launched a campaign to help local traders in expanding their businesses to foreign countries.
  • The campaign "Mission Niryatak Bano" is planned in six steps to register and handhold the local traders willing to expand their business to foreign countries.
  • As per a state government's release, the campaign will cover assistance of local traders from training, securing necessary documentation, registration in Rajasthan Export Promotion Council and even support in exports and trade operations.

Uzbekistan hosts two-day 'Central-South Asia conference'
The Central-South Asia nation, Uzbekistan is in the saddle to host the two-day prestigious Central-Asia Conference in the capital city of Taskent. The top-level event is held to discuss the 'challenges and opportunities in Uzbekistan.
  • The event shall address multilateral discussions on trade, energy consumption, and brand cooperation in presence of high-ranking delegates mentioned Saidjanov.
  • Indian External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar has highlighted India's role in the top-level conference. He is supposed to hold discussions with representatives of countries like the European Union, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan on the sidelines of the summit.
Indore becomes only Indian city to make it to Int’l Clean Air Catalyst Programme
The Indore city of Madhya Pradesh, or the cleanest city of India, has become the only city from the country to be selected for International Clean Air Catalyst Programme. 
  • The project will be operated for a period of five years to purify the air in the city with the cooperation of Indore Municipal Corporation and Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board.
  • Under the project, USAID and partners will work with local communities to better understand local pollution sources and identify, test, accelerate, and scale solutions for cleaner, healthier air.

SBI tops list of PSBs writing off bad loans in FY21
State Bank of India topped the list of public sector banks writing off loans in FY21 followed by Union Bank of India.
  • While SBI removed Rs 34,402 crore from its balance sheet, the Union Bank of India wrote off Rs 16,983 crore during the last fiscal.
  • Punjab National Bank (PNB) wrote off Rs 15,877 crore in FY 21 and came third in the list as bad loans piled up.

Tata Power distribution arm in Odisha ties up with CSCs to facilitate online bill payments in rural areas
Tata Power Central Odisha Distribution Ltd has partnered with authorities of Common Service Centres (CSCs) under the Digital India Programme to facilitate online payment of electricity bills in rural areas.
  • The collaboration will help rural consumers of the joint venture company between Tata Power and the Odisha government pay their power bills to CSCs and Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs).
Amazon India, InCred join hands to offer credit to e-commerce retailers
InCred has entered into a strategic partnership with Amazon India to provide collateral-free, working capital loans of up to Rs 50 lakh to Amazon merchants via its seller portal.
  • The InCred and Amazon India partnership aims to resolve this challenge by addressing the financial constraints of the Indian e-tailers.
  • Both intend to empower them by extending quick, easy, and low-interest working capital loans based on their revenues, with minimal documentation and flexible repayment options.

India’s largest 3 GWh Li-ion battery factory to be set up by Lohum within 18 months
Lohum Cleantech, a lithium ion battery maker and a battery recycling solutions company, has firmed up plans to expand its manufacturing capacity of lithium ion batteries from 300 MWh to 1000 MWh (1 GWh) and its recycling capacity 10 times, from 1,000 tonnes per annum to 10,000 tonnes per annum.
  • The expansion project, to be taken up on a modular mode, is likely to be completed within the next 12-18 months and will effectively take the recycling capacity to about 2 GWh of recyclable material.

Minister of state in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Jitendra Singh said a multipurpose device COVID BEEP has been developed to monitor Oxygen rate, body temperature and heart rate indigenously by ECIL and ESIC Hyderabad. 
  • With the help of Red Cross Society 500 COVID BEEP has been provided to the hospital and it is helpful in maintaining Covid protocol. Mr Singh said the cost effective monitoring system has also inbuilt a GPS facility.

Legendary badminton player Nandu Natekar passes away
Nandu Natekar, one of the superstars in Indian badminton history, passed away in Pune due to prolonged illness. He was 88.
  • The first Indian shuttler to win a tournament overseas — the Selangor International crown in Kuala Lumpur in 1956, Natekar was among the first batch of the Arjuna Award recipients in 1961 when the awards were introduced.
  • His international achievements included making it to the All England Championship quarterfinals in 1954 and representing India in the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in 1966.
Noted Carnatic Classical Violinist Sikkil R Bhaskaran passes away 
Noted Carnatic Classical Violinist ‘Kalaimaamani’ Sikkil Shri R Bhaskaran passed away at Chennai. He was 85.

Puri Becomes First Indian City to Provide Drinkable Tap Water All Time
Now, people in Odisha’s temple town Puri can drink water directly from the tap and there is no need to store or filter the water as the facility is available round the clock, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said.
  • With this the Jagannath Dham also become the first city in India to provide “drink from tap" quality water 24X7.
  • The chief minister said his government has enhanced the budgetary allocation under drinking water supply by 20 times in the past five years, from Rs 200 crore to Rs 4,000 crore.
Government formulates scheme SMILE covering comprehensive
measures for welfare of beggars
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has formulated a scheme “SMILE - Support for Marginalized Individuals for Livelihood and Enterprise”, which includes subscheme - ‘Central Sector Scheme for Comprehensive Rehabilitation of persons engaged in the act of Begging’.
  • This scheme covers several comprehensive measures including welfare measures for persons who are engaged in the act of begging.
  • The focus of the scheme is extensively on rehabilitation, provision of medical facilities, counselling, basic documentation, education, skill development, economic linkages and so on.
  • The scheme would be implemented with the support of State/UT Governments/Local Urban Bodies, Voluntary Organizations, Community Based Organizations (CBOs) , institutions and others.
Uttar Pradesh govt. and Sapio Analytics join hands to revive MSMEs, distributes automation software
Department of MSME, Government of Uttar Pradesh, signed an MoU with government advisory firm Sapio Analytics, to provide licenses of automation software Accloud, worth Rs. 72 crores, to 20,000 MSMEs of the state.
  • The software licenses shall be provided free of cost to the MSMEs who can apply for the same (https://sapioanalytics.com/accloud/)through a portal.
  • Accloud can be operated on both mobile and web, and is available in multiple languages including Hindi, for the business people of the state of Uttar Pradesh

The Centre has said that the Garima Grihas for the transgender persons are being set up with the help of community-based organizations.
  • Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment A. Narayanaswamy informed Lok Sabha,  12 pilot shelter homes have been initiated with the aim of providing safe and secure shelter to transgender persons.
  • He said, such shelter homes have been set up in the states of Maharashtra, Delhi, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
Women Unemployment Rate Falls to 4.2 Per Cent in 2019-20: Survey
Unemployment rate for women fell to 4.2 per cent in 2019-20 from 5.1 per cent in 2018-19, according to Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by National Statistical Office (NSO),a wing of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
  • The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for women has increased from 24.5 per cent in 2018-19 to 30.0 per cent in 2019-20.
  • The government has taken several initiatives to improve women's participation in the labour force. In order to encourage employment of women, a number of protective provisions have been incorporated in the labour laws for creating congenial work environment for women workers.

Indo-Russia joint Military Exercise INDRA-2021 to be held at Volgograd from 1st to 13th August
12th Edition of Indo-Russia joint Military Exercise INDRA-2021 will be held at Volgograd, Russia from 1st to 13th August.
  • The exercise will entail conduct of counter terror operations under the United Nations mandate by a joint force against international terror groups.
  • Two hundred fifty personnel from both the nations will form part of the exercise. The Indian Army contingent comprising of a Mechanised Infantry Battalion underwent rigorous training at different locations in India to refine their drills for participation in the joint exercise.
INS Talwar reaches Mombasa to participate in Exercise Cutlass Express 2021
Indian Naval Ship (INS) Talwar is participating in Exercise Cutlass Express 2021, which commenced on July 26 along the East Coast of Africa, to improve combined maritime law enforcement capacity and increase interoperability between the regional navies. The exercise will conclude on August 6.
  • The exercise is an annual maritime exercise conducted to promote national and regional maritime security in East Africa and the Western Indian Ocean.
  • The 2021 edition of the exercise involves the participation of 12 Eastern African countries, US, UK, India and various international organisations, like International Maritime Organisation (IMO), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Interpol, EurEuropean Union Naval Forc (EUNAVFOR), Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean (CRIMARIO) and EUCAP Somalia.

HDFC Bank launches up to Rs 10 lakh overdraft facility for shopkeepers, merchants to ease cash crunch
India’s largest private lender HDFC Bank launched an overdraft facility for small retailers in partnership with the government’s e-governance services delivery arm CSC SPV that enables government schemes and services through common service centres (CSCs).
  • The ‘Dukandar Overdraft Scheme’ by HDFC Bank is aimed at helping shopkeepers and merchants ease their cash crunch. According to the bank, retailers operating for a minimum of three years are eligible for the scheme by providing six months bank statement from any bank.
  • HDFC Bank will approve an overdraft limit from a minimum of Rs 50,000 to a maximum of Rs 10 lakhs based on the statements.

IMF Cuts India's GDP Growth Forecast to 9.5 Per Cent for FY22
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) slashed its FY22 growth forecast for India by 300 basis points (bps) from its April projection to 9.5 per cent, the sharpest cut for any country, citing the damage caused by the second Covid wave that peaked in May.
  • While the multilateral body retained its global growth forecast at 6 per cent for 2021, it trimmed its earlier projection by 40 bps for developing countries and raised it by 50 bps for advanced economies.
  • Risks around the global baseline projections are, however, to the downside, it cautioned. Countries lagging in vaccination, such as India and Indonesia, would suffer the most among G20 economies.

Private sector lenders including HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank have picked up a stake in blockchain technology focussed start-up IBBIC Pvt Ltd.
  • In separate stock exchange filings, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank said they have picked up 50,000 equity shares amounting to 5.55 per cent stake in IBBIC.
  • HDFC Bank and Axis Bank invested ₹5 lakh each for the shares.ICICI Bank paid ₹4.9 lakh for the shares.

Doyen of particle physics Steven Weinberg passes away
Physicist Steven Weinberg, who won the Nobel prize in 1979 with two other scientists for their separate contributions unlocking mysteries of tiny particles and their electromagnetic interaction, has died at 88.
  • In 1979, Weinberg shared the Nobel prize in physics with scientists Abdus Salam and Sheldon Lee Glashow. Their work improved the understanding of how everything in the universe relates, according to a UT statement.
  • The work helped physicists unify two of the four forces of nature, subatomic forces known as nuclear forces, said Sean Carroll, a theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology.

Government of Arunachal Pradesh signed an MoU with Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis-IIM Shillong for collaborating as a knowledge partner for capacity building of State Government officers and to set up a satellite centre of IIM-S in the State and for necessary policy interventions.

CRPF signs MoU with C-DAC to train manpower of force in advanced technologies
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has signed an MoU with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing C-DAC to train the manpower of the force in advanced technologies and undertake joint projects.

Amit Shah inaugurates Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme in Meghalaya 
Union Home Minister Amit Shah along with Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the much-awaited and prestigious “Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme”.
  • The Greater Sohra Water Supply Scheme was conceptualised by the government of Meghalaya and funded by the Ministry of DoNER under NESIDS in the year 2019 at an amount of Rs. 24.08 crore.
  • The project will provide water supply to Sohra Town and 12 (twelve) habitations viz. Philippines becomes first country to approve nutrient-enriched “Golden Rice” for planting
Philippines becomes first country to give green light to grow enriched 'golden rice' Nutrient-enriched “golden rice”, a major innovation in fighting malnutrition, could be on Filipino tables within just 18 months after the government became the first in the world to approve the crop.
  • The Golden rice has been developed by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA-PhilRice) in partnership with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), after spending nearly two decades.
  • A cup of golden rice can give as much as 40 per cent of vitamin A which is very essential for children aged six months to five years, to combat childhood blindness and save lives in the developing world.
  • It is also the first genetically modified rice approved for commercial propagation in South and Southeast Asia.
Sunseap to build world's largest floating solar farm in Indonesia
Singapore’s Sunseap is planning a $2 billion floating solar project on a reservoir in Indonesia’s Batam Island.
  • If successful it will be the world’s largest to date and electricity could be exported via undersea cable to the nearby island city state of Singapore.
  • The floating solar system will have a capacity of 2.2 GWp and span around 1600 hectares, making it the largest in the world to date, said Sunseap. The energy storage system will have a storage capacity of more than 4000 MWhr.
  • The project will be financed through a mixture of bank borrowings and internal resources. Construction is expected to begin in 2022 and plan to be completed in 2024.

RBI allows loans up to ₹5 cr to other banks' directors without board approval
The Reserve Bank of India has raised the limit on loans to be sanctioned to directors or associates without board approval for the first time in 26 years to Rs. 5 crore from Rs. 25 lakhs last set in 1996.
  • This revision in threshold will be applicable to only personal loans disbursed to any director of other banks, all loans to relatives of bank’s own directors, relatives of directors of other banks, and the companies or firms associated with them.

India's GDP Growth Expected to Be 8.8-9% in FY22: Care Ratings
The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth is likely to be 8.8 to 9 per cent in the current financial year, driven by agriculture and industry sectors, Care Ratings said in a report.
  • The country’s economy had contracted by 7.3 per cent in fiscal 2020-21.
  • The agency said the outlook for the Indian economy on almost all counts in FY22 would look seemingly better than FY21 on account of the negative base effect.
India breaks into the top 10 list of agri produce exporters 
India broke into the top 10 list of agricultural produce exporters in 2019 with a sizeable share in the export of rice, cotton, soya beans and meat, according to a World Trade Organization (WTO) report on the trends in world agricultural trade in the past 25 years.
  • In 2019, Mexico and India, with 3.4% and 3.1% share in global agri exports, respectively, replaced Malaysia (7th) and New Zealand (9th) as the largest exporters, while the US, which topped the list in 1995 (22.2%), was overtaken by the European Union in 2019 (16.1%).
  • The US’s share fell to 13.8% in 2019. Brazil maintained its ranking as the third largest exporter, increasing its share from 4.8% in 1995 to 7.8% in 2019. China climbed from the sixth spot in 1995 (4%) to fourth in 2019 (5.4%).

Byju Acquires Ed-Tech Firm for Higher Education 'Great Learning' for $600 Million.
 
Edtech major Byju’s said it has acquired Singapore-headquartered Great Learning for USD 600 million (about Rs 4,466 crore), and will invest an additional USD 400 million to strengthen its position in the professional and higher education segment.
  • The development comes just days after Byju’s had announced the acquisition of US-based digital reading platform Epic for USD 500 million (around Rs 3,729.8 crore), and an additional USD 1 billion (about Rs 7,459.7 crore) investment in the North American market.

Indian businessman Yusuffali MA appointed vice-chairman of top govt business body in Abu Dhabi
Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has appointed prominent Indian businessman Yusuffali MA as the vice-chairman of the apex government body for all businesses operating from the UAE's capital city, making him the only person from India on the 29-member board.
  • Yusuffali, 65, is the Chairman and Managing Director of Abu Dhabi-based LuLu Group which operates hypermarkets and retail companies in many countries.
Nasir Kamal becomes DG, Bureau of Civil Aviation Security
Nasir Kamal, a 1986 batch IPS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, has been appointed as the Director General of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) in the Ministry of Civil Aviation till his superannuation on July 31, 2022.
  • BCAS is a wing of the Civil Aviation Ministry looking after civil aviation security. His appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister.

Madrid's iconic Paseo del Prado, Buen Retiro Park win World Heritage status Madrid's iconic Paseo del Prado and Buen Retiro Park have been added to UNESCO's World Heritage List, the organisation and the Spanish government said.
  • The addition to the list of the world's most precious and significant sites was in recognition of the key role the Paseo, a wide tree-lined avenue that's home to prominent buildings such as the Prad o Museum, and the adjoining Buen Retiro park, a 125-hectare green space, play in Madrid's history.
  • The decision, made brings the total number of World Heritage Sites in Spain to 49 – the third-highest in the world after Italy and China.
Pramod Bhagat named Differently Abled Sportsman of the Year 2019
World No. 1 para shuttler Pramod Bhagat was named Differently Abled Sportsman of the Year at Indian Sports Honour for 2019.
  • Bhagat won two gold medals and a bronze at the Dubai Para Badminton Tournament this year.
  • Indian Sports Honours are awards given annually by the RPSG Group in association with the Virat Kohli Foundation to outstanding sports personalities of India
Payal Kapadia wins best documentary award in Cannes
Mumbai-based filmmaker Payal Kapadia has bagged the Oeil d'or (Golden Eye) award for Best Documentary for her film 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' at Cannes Film Festival.
  • 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' has emerged the winner in a list of 28 documentaries submitted from around the world.19-Jul-2021.
  • 'A Night of Knowing Nothing' is a story of a college student who writes letters to her lover when he is away.
India's chief hydrographer receives Alexander Dalrymple award
India's chief hydrographer Vice Admiral Vinay Badhwar received the Alexander Dalrymple award by the British government in recognition of his works in areas of hydrography and nautical cartography.
  • The Alexander Dalrymple award has been named after the first hydrographer of the British Admiralty and was instituted in 2006.

Nasa selects SpaceX for Jupiter moon mission
Nasa selected Elon Musk’s SpaceX to launch its probe of Jupiter's moon Europa, which has liquid oceans that could harbour life.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said in a statement that the contract for the Europa Clipper mission, scheduled to launch in October 2024 on a Falcon Heavy rocket from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, is worth $178 million.


OBITUARIES

Veteran multilingual actress Jayanthi passes away
Veteran Kannada actress Jayanthi, who was popularly known as Abhinaya Sharadhe, passed away. She was 76.
  • She started her acting career in 1963 and had starred in over 500 films that span across five languages including Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi.
  • She won several awards including the Karnataka State Film Awards seven times and the Filmfare Awards twice.
