Centre approves over Rs 3,063 crore of Additional Central Assistance to six states for measures relating to national calamities
A High Level Committee under the chairmanship of Home Minister Amit Shah has approved over 3,063 crore rupees of Additional Central Assistance to six states.
  • Assam, Gujarat, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and West Bengal will get funds for floods, landslides and cyclones that occurred during this year.
  • The High Level Committee has approved Additional Central Assistance of over 1,133 crore rupees to Gujarat for cyclone Tauktae and 586.59 crore rupees to West Bengal for cyclone Yaas. For floods and landslides during the South West Monsoon, 51.53 crore rupees will be given to Assam, 504.06 crore rupees to Karnataka, 600.50 crore rupees to Madhya Pradesh and 187.18 crore rupees will be given to Uttarakhand.
PM inaugurates Bina (MP)-Panki (UP) Multiproduct pipeline project
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the 356 Km long Bina Refinery (Madhya Pradesh)- POL Terminal at Panki (Kanpur, UP) Multiproduct pipeline project ( capacity of 45 million metric tonnes per annum) with an outlay of Rs 1524 crore (Rs. 1227 crores in UP and Rs. 297 crores in MP).
  • The project has been completed and commissioned one month ahead of the approved completion schedule of December 2021 (3 years from PNGRB authorisation) and within the approved cost.
  • It will provide for safe and efficient evacuation of products from Bina Refinery and also improve the availability of products in Eastern U.P, Central U.P., Northern Bihar and Southern Uttarakhand.

India, Philippines Set to Conclude BrahMos Missile Deal
India and the Philippines are set to formally seal a government-to-government BrahMos deal soon, capping years of negotiations for the supply of a batch of the supersonic cruise missiles for the Philippine navy, people familiar with the development said
  • The procurement is expected to signal a major upswing in India's strategic ties with the Philippines which has been focusing on ramping up its naval prowess in the face of its lingering friction with China in the South China sea.

Axis Bank is second largest in PoS machines
Axis Bank has become the second-largest merchant-acquiring bank in the country, leapfrogging two spaces during 2021 by installing over two lakh card-swipe machines during the year.
  • This is part of the bank’s ‘Axis One’ strategy where it approaches the customers offering its entire gamut of products instead of a standalone service.
RBI extends deadline for periodic KYC update to March 31, 2022
RBI has announced that it has extended the deadline for periodic KYC update by 3 months till March 31, 2022.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced that it has extended the deadline for periodic KYC update by 3 months till March 31, 2022.
Federal Bank partners with Schwing Stetter India
Federal Bank, India's leading Private Sector Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with Schwing Stetter (India) Ltd, a Subsidiary of Schwing GMBH, Germany, one of the largest manufacturers of Concrete and Construction equipment in India.
  • This MoU will enable both Federal Bank and Schwing Stetter to offer customised financial solutions to their customers.
  • The Bank will work towards catering to the customers’ needs through Commercial Equipment loans with easy monthly repayment plans best suited for the customers. Moreover, the bank will leverage technology for enhancing customer experience.
Insurance Intermediaries can maintain current accounts in appropriate number of banks: Irdai
Irdai said that insurance intermediaries, including entities sponsored by them, can maintain current accounts in appropriate number of banks so as to meet regulatory requirements and reinsurance business.
  • In August last year, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had instructed banks not to open current accounts for customers who have availed credit facilities in the form of cash credit or overdraft from the banking system.
  • Later, on a review, the RBI permitted banks to open specific accounts that are stipulated under various statutes and instructions of other regulators/ regulatory departments, without any restrictions placed in terms of its August 2020 circular.

India’s green energy economy received $7.27 billion FDI since 2014-15
India’s green energy industry received foreign direct investment (FDI) worth $7.27 billion from 2014-15 till June 2021, according to Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Of this$797.21 million came during 2020-21.
  • As per REN21 Renewables 2020 Global status Report , during the period 2014 -2019 renewable energy programmes and projects in India attracted an investment of $64.4 billion. In the year 2019 alone, $11.2 billion were invested," MNRE said.
  • According to the government, installed power capacity from non-fossil fuels will go up to 66% by 2030. Also, India has already reached an emission reduction of 28%.

New Zealand's iconic batter Ross Taylor to retire from international cricket
Veteran New Zealand batter Ross Taylor confirmed that he will retire from international cricket after the two-Test series against Bangladesh and the ODI against Australia and the Netherlands in February and March.
  • Taylor has been a 'Black Caps mainstay since his 2007 Test debut, amassing a New Zealand record 7,584 runs in 110 matches at an average of 44.87.
  • One of only four New Zealanders to play 100 Tests, he also holds the nation's record in one-day international runs (8,581) and centuries (21), and was the world's first to play in 100 internationals in all formats.

ITBP DG Sanjay Arora to hold SSB additional charge
ITBP Director General Sanjay Arora will hold the additional charge of another border guarding force SSB as the latter's chief Kumar Rajesh Chandra is set to retire on December 31, a government order said.
  • Chandra, a 1985-batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre, had taken over as the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) DG in January, 2019. He will superannuate on December 31.
CP Goyal appointed as DG of Forests & Special Secretary
Indian Forest Service officer Chandra Prakash Goyal has been appointed as the Director-General of Forests & Special Secretary (DGF&SS), Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change.
  • Goyal, a 1986 batch IFS officer was previously the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest under Uttar Pradesh Department of Forest.
  • He had returned to UP after being on central deputation as Joint Secretary in the Indian Department of Biotechnology.
Vikram Misri appointed as new Deputy NSA
Vikram Misri, who was India’s envoy to Beijing for almost three years till early this month, has been named the next Deputy National Security Advisor.
  • He will succeed Pankaj Saran, ex-Indian envoy to Russia and Bangladesh who demits office on December 31. He was in Beijing during one of the most challenging phases in the relationship with China, as a border stand-off has been ongoing for more than 19 months now.

Three Indian-origin Canadians Honoured with Civilian Award for Outstanding Achievement
Three Indian-origin Canadians have been bestowed with the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honours for their outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, helping in building a better nation and promoting bilateral ties between Canada and India. 
  • Internationally renowned scientist and innovator Dr Vaikuntam Iyer Lakshmanan; real estate mogul Bob Singh Dhillon, also known as Navjeet Singh Dhillon; and renowned paediatrician Dr Pradeep Merchant were among the 135 individuals honoured with the prestigious award, according to a press note uploaded on the website of the Governor General of Canada.
Danish Siddiqui Posthumously Gets RedInk Award
Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who died during an assignment in Afghanistan, has been posthumously awarded as the 'Journalist of the Year' for 2020 by the Mumbai Press Club. Chief Justice of India N V Ramana presented the annual 'RedInk Awards for Excellence in Journalism', instituted by the Mumbai Press Club, in a virtual event.
  • He presented the prestigious award to Siddiqui "for his spectrum of investigative and impactful news photography".Danish Siddiqui's wife Frederike Siddiqui received the award.
  • Senior journalist Prem Shankar Jha, 83, was bestowed with the lifetime achievement award "for his long and distinguished career of incisive and analytical writing".
Sahitya Akademi Announces Winners Of Yuva Puraskar, Bal Sahitya Puraskar 2021
The Sahitya Akademi announced a list of 22 winners each of the Yuva Puraskar and the Bal Sahitya Puraskar for 2021.
  • According to the board, an engraved copper plate, shawl and an amount of Rs 1 lakh will be given to the main Sahitya Akademi prize winner and an engraved copper plate and an amount of Rs 50,000 each will be given to the Yuva Puraskar and Bal Sahitya Puraskar.
Sahitya Akademi Award 2021: Seven books of poetry, two novels, five books of short stories, two plays, one book each of biography, autobiography, criticism, and epic poetry have won the Sahitya Akademi Awards 2021. Author, Namita Gokhale was awarded for her novel Things to Leave Behind.

Russia launches third and final Angara A5 demonstration mission
Russia has launched its third and final demonstration flight of the Angara A5 rocket. Angara is being developed and built by the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center and is intended to replace several existing launch vehicles.
  • Angara attempted to place its 2,400 kg mass simulator in a near geostationary orbit (GEO) using a new Persei upper stage.
  • After a few hours, the Persei upper stage was to perform two burns to place the payload in a graveyard orbit, a few hundred kilometers above GEO. Russian reports, however, suggest that Persei only reached an initial low Earth parking orbit before suffering an engine failure.

Dr. Subhash Sarkar releases ARIIA 2021, Madras bags 1st position under Central University and Institute of National Importance category
Minister of State for Education Dr. Subhas Sarkar virtually announced the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA), 2021. Indian Institute of Technology of Madras got the first rank under the Central University and Institute of National Importance category.
  • Among government technical universities (state-run and deemed), Panjab University (PU) has been ranked number one followed by Delhi Technological University and Netaji Subhas University of Technology bagging the second and third positions, respectively. College of Engineering Pune (COEP) topped ARIIA 2021 in the government and government-aided technical colleges category.
  • Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) topped among private technical universities for innovation as per the rankings. In the list of private technical institutions or colleges, GH Raisoni College of Engineering, Maharashtra holds the top spot.
  • Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) topped among non-technical Institutes of National Importance and CFIs and Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India is best in the non-technical general category.
Jhansi Railway Station Now Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station'
The Uttar Pradesh government has renamed Jhansi Railway Station as Veerangana Laxmibai Railway Station’ after Rani Laxmibai.
  • Earlier the Mughalsarai Railway station was renamed as Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya junction and the Faizabad Railway station as Ayodhya Cantt.
  • Since coming to power, Adityanath government has changed names of several establishments including those of Faizabad and Allahabad districts, which were renamed as Ayodhya and Prayagraj, respectively.

Egypt becomes 4th member of BRICS New Development Bank
India, welcomed Egypt as the new member of BRICS New Development Bank. With this, Egypt has now become a fourth new member to be admitted to BRICS NDB.
  • The BRICS group includes five major emerging countries around the world- Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and the multilateral bank BRICS NDB was established by these rising economies to finance the sustainable development projects.

ICICI prudential Life Insurance launches ICICI Pru iProtect Return of Premium
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance has launched ‘ICICI Pru iProtect Return of Premium’ offering life-stage based cover wherein the quantum of life cover is automatically adjusted based on the customer’s life stages.
  • ICICI Pru iProtect Return of Premium offers a return of 105% of all premiums paid on survival, besides providing cover against 64 critical illnesses, one of the highest in the industry. It offers two variants – Life Stage Cover and Level Cover.
Gross NPAs of scheduled commercial banks down to 6.9% in Q2 FY22: RBI
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in its 'Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2020-21' report, has said scheduled commercial banks' (SCB) gross non-performing assets (NPAs) declined from 8.2 per cent at end-March 2020 to 7.3 per cent at end-March 2021 and further to 6.9 per cent at end-September 2021.
  • The return on assets (RoA) of SCBs improved from 0.2 per cent at end-March 2020 to 0.7 per cent at end-March 2021, aided by stable income and decline in expenditure, the RBI report said.
  • The report said capital to risk weighted assets (CRAR) ratio of SCBs strengthened from 14.8 per cent at end-March 2020 to 16.3 per cent at end-March 2021 and further to 16.6 per cent at end-September 2021, partly aided by higher retained earnings, recapitalisation of public sector banks (PSBs) and capital raising from the market by both PSBs and private sector banks (PVBs).

Bharti Airtel, Tata Partner for 5G-Based Remote Robotic Operations
Telecom operator Bharti Airtel and IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) have joined hands to build a 5G-based remote working technology using robotics, according to a joint statement.
  • TCS during the trials has successfully tested two use cases of its Neural Manufacturing solutions on Airtel’s 5G testbed in Manesar remote robotics operations, and vision-based quality inspection, the statement claimed.
  • The 5G ecosystem will open limitless possibilities for enterprises to enhance productivity and serve their customers even better with digitally enabled applications.
India's November wholesale price inflation spikes to 12-year-high of 14.23%
India’s annual wholesale inflation surged to 14.23% in November over a year ago on account of the so-called base effect , and also a rise in prices of mineral oils, basic metals, crude petroleum, natural gas, chemicals and food products, official data showed.
  • The surge in the wholesale price index (WPI), which measures factory-gate inflation, or what producers charge wholesalers, follows a rise in retail prices. The consumer price index (CPI) for November climbed 4.91%, despite the central and several state governments reducing taxes on petrol and diesel early in the month to provide relief to the people.
India’s GDP expected to grow at 9% in FY22, FY23: ICRA
The Indian economy is expected to maintain a real GDP growth of 9.0% each in FY22 and FY23 amid the uncertainty triggered by the Omicron variant of Covid-19, ratings and research firm Icra said.
  • The rating agency said the available data for Q3 FY2022 does not offer convincing evidence that the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC’s) criteria of a durable and sustainable growth recovery had been met, to confirm a change in the Monetary Policy stance to neutral in February 2022.

  • Praveen Kumar is a 1987 batch retired IAS officer of Tamil Nadu cadre, and a former Secretary Skill Development & Entrepreneurship.
EaseMyTrip ropes in actors Vijay Raaz, Varun Sharma as brand ambassadors
EaseMyTrip, India’s second-largest online travel platform, has roped in actors Vijay Raaz and Varun Sharma as brand ambassadors.
  • This is the first time that EaseMyTrip has appointed any brand ambassadors.
Vasudevan reappointed as MD, CEO of Equitas Small Finance Bank
Equitas Small Finance Bank Limited board of directors has approved the proposal for re-appointment of Vasudevan Pathangi Narasimhan (PN) as the MD & CEO for three years, with effect from July 23, 2022, up to July 22, 2025, subject to the RBI and shareholders' approval.
  • Vasudevan is currently serving as the MD and CEO of the bank. He was appointed as the MD of erstwhile Equitas Finance Limited, now a bank, with effect from July 23, 2016. Before that, he was the MD of Equitas Holdings Limited.
Radhika Jha appointed as CEO of Energy Efficiency Services
Radhika Jha, an IAS officer of 2002-Batch of Uttarakhand cadre has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Energy Efficiency Services Ltd. (EESL).
  • Prior to the new posting, the IAS officer was serving as Secretary to the Government of Uttarakhand for the Education Department. She took charge of the post in July this year and navigated the operational guidelines for resuming classes post COVID. Also, Jha played a key role in formulating a detailed strategy to cover up for the learning loss.
Anupam Ray to Be India's New Permanent Representative at UN Conference on Disarmament
Senior diplomat Anupam Ray has been appointed as India’s next permanent representative to the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
  • Ray, a 1994-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, is currently serving as a joint secretary in the MEA’s headquarters in Delhi.
  • Ray will succeed Pankaj Sharma. Sharma, a 1991-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been appointed as India’s next ambassador to Mexico.

Alia Bhatt, who has everyone impressed with her exemplary acting skills and fashion sense, has now added another feather to her cap. The actor is now turning out to be an inspiration off-screen as well as she was recently named 2021 ‘Person of the Year’ by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India.
  • She was awarded the prestigious title to “celebrate her work in support of an animal-friendly fashion industry and her advocacy for dogs and cats in need,” PETA India said.
  • Additionally, Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar have been awarded the coveted title of 2021 'Most Beautiful Vegetarian' by the animal welfare organisation.

Russia hands over ‘World’s Largest, Most Powerful’ nuclear-powered Icebreaker to State Atomic Energy Corporation
Russia’s first serial project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreaker known as Sibir, was handed over to state atomic energy corporation Rosatom for exploitation.
  • Project 22220 nuclear-powered icebreakers are to date the most powerful and the largest in the world. The ships ensure Russia’s leading position in the Arctic. The icebreaker is 173.3 meters (568.6 feet) long and 34 meters broad with a 33,500-tonne displacement.
Indian Army Establishes Quantum Laboratory at Mhow (MP)
The Indian Army is making steady, yet significant strides in the field of emerging technology domains.The Army, with support from the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) has recently established the Quantum Lab at Military College of Telecommunication Engineering, Mhow (MP) MCTE to spearhead research and training in this key developing field.
  • Indian Army has also established an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre at the same institution with over 140 deployments in forward areas and active support of industry and academia.
  • Training on cyber warfare is being imparted through a state of art cyber range, and cyber security labs.

“He-Man” artist and toy designer T. Mark Taylor passes away
Mark Taylor, artist and toy designer for 'He-Man and the Masters of the Universe' franchise as well as the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles', died at his Southern California home at age 80.
  • Toy company Mattel had sold more than 70 million action figures from its Masters of the Universe collection within 30 months after it hit stores nearly 40 years ago.
  • Taylor began his career with El Segundo-based Mattel in 1976 as a packaging designer, his family said, as per The Hollywood Reporter. His toy work was featured in documentaries, including 'Power of Grayskull' and 'The Toys That Made Us'.
Scientist E.O. Wilson, dubbed modern-day Darwin, passes away 
Edward. O. Wilson, the trailblazing U.S. scientist, professor and author whose study of insects and clarion call to protect Earth earned him the nickname “Darwin’s natural heir”, has died at age 92.
  • Wilson was an award-winning biologist and longtime Harvard University research professor, considered the world’s leading authority on ants and their behavior.
  • While an entomologist early in his career, he broadened his scope immensely, studying not just insects but the social interactions of birds, mammals and humans, and he effectively — and controversially — established a new field of science known as sociobiology.
  • He was the author of hundreds of scientific papers and more than 30 books, two of which won him Pulitzer Prizes for nonfiction: 1978’s On Human Nature, and The Ants in 1990.

Uttarakhand: Govt releases Rs 360.95 Crore to expedite the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission
The government has released a second tranche of 360 Crore 95 Thousand rupees with an undivided focus to expedite the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission in Uttarakhand.
  • In 2020-2021, in two tranches, 721 Crore 90 Thousand has been released to the State so far.
  • For the speedy implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission, a Central fund of one thousand 443 Crore 80 Thousand has been allocated to Uttarakhand in 2021-2022, which is four times the allocation made during in 2021-2022. Uttarakhand plans to become Har Ghar Jal State by next year.
Govt approves PLI Scheme for Textiles with an outlay of 10,683 crore rupees over 5 year period
The government has approved the Production Linked Incentive, PLI Scheme for Textiles, with an approved outlay of 10 thousand 683 crore rupees over a five-year period.
  • The decision has been taken to promote production of Man-Made Fibre Apparel, Man-Made Fabrics, and Products of Technical Textiles in the country.
  • Ministry of Textiles will accept online applications under the PLI Scheme for Textiles from 1st January next year through PLI portal https://pli.texmin.gov.in/mainapp/Default. The application window will remain open from 1st to 31st January next year.
Sex Ratio at birth improved by 19 points at National level, from 918 in 2014-15 to 937 in 2020-21: Women and Child Development Ministry
Women and Child Development Ministry has taken various measures to ensure development, care and protection of women and children. The Bill on Prohibition of Child Marriage (Amendment) Act, 2021 has been introduced in Lok Sabha this month for raising the age of marriage of women from 18 to 21 years.
  • The Ministry said, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Scheme is being implemented across India, covering 640 districts to address the issue of declining child sex ratio.
  • The scheme has stirred up collective consciousness towards changing the mindset of the Nation towards valuing the girl child. This is also reflected in the improvement of sex ratio at birth by 19 points at National level from 918 in 2014-15 to 937 in 2020-21.
Govt approves Corbevax and Covovax vaccines and anti-viral drug Molnupiravir for restricted use on adults in emergency situations
Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation has given approval to Corbevax vaccine, Covovax vaccine, and anti-viral drug Molnupiravir for restricted use in emergency situations. 
  • Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said, Corbevax vaccine is India's first indigenously developed RBD protein sub-unit vaccine against COVID-19, made by Hyderabad-based firm Biological-E.  It is the third vaccine developed in India.
  • The Nanoparticle Vaccine, Covovax, will be manufactured by Pune-based firm Serum Institute of India.
Telangana tops in implementation of Rurban Mission 
Telangana stood first in the implementation of the Shyama Prasad Mukherji Rurban Mission (SPMRM) that was launched four years ago to stimulate local economic development, enhance basic services and create well planned clusters.Tamil Nadu and Gujarat took the second and third positions respectively.
  • Sangareddy and Kamareddy districts stood in the first two positions among the 300 clusters across the country where the programme was being implemented.
  • In Telangana, in as many as 17 clusters (12 non-tribal and five tribal), the programme was being implemented at an estimated cost of ₹1,885.12 crore.
Centre sets up high-level committee to examine possibility of lifting AFSPA from Nagaland
The Centre  constituted a high-level committee, headed by a secretary-rank officer, to examine the possibility of lifting the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Nagaland, apparently to soothe the rising tension in the northeastern state over the killing of 14 civilians.
  • Vivek Joshi, who is Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, will head the five-member committee while Additional Secretary in the Union Home Ministry Piyush Goyal will be the member secretary of the panel. Other members of the committee are chief secretary and DGP of Nagaland and DGP of the Assam Rifles, a government official privy to to the development said.

Japan introduces world's first dual-mode vehicle that can run on roads and tracks
The world's first dual-mode vehicle has hit the ground in the town of Kaiyo, Japan. It is said that the vehicle can run on roads as well as rail tracks.
  • The DMV looks like a minibus and runs on normal rubber tyres on the road. What makes this vehicle different from the rest is, it also has steel wheels in its underbelly which descend when it hits the rail tracks.
  • The front tyres are lifted off the track and the rear wheels stay down to propel the DMV onto the railway. This feature of effectively changing into a train-like module easily on a rail track is the first of its kind.

India will chair the Counter-Terrorism Committee of UNSC in January 2022 after 10 years.
  • The Counter-Terrorism Committee was established by Security Council resolution 1373 adopted unanimously on 28 September 2001 in the wake of the 9/11 terror attacks in the US.
  • The Committee was tasked with monitoring implementation of resolution 1373 which requested countries to implement a number of measures aimed at enhancing their legal and institutional ability to counter terrorist activities at home and around the world.

Karnataka govt partners with NPCI and SBI for enabling and implementing e-RUPI
The Karnataka government's e-Governance department has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and State Bank of India (SBI) for enabling and implementing 'e-RUPI', a cashless and contactless payment solution to students under its scholarship programme.
  • e-RUPI will be used to ensure a leak-proof delivery of education fees of eligible students by paying digitally to the college/institute by Karnataka Government.
IndusInd Bank launches 'Green' Fixed Deposits
IndusInd Bank has announced the launch of ‘green fixed deposits’, whereby the deposit proceeds will be used to finance projects and firms supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • These deposits will be offered to both retail and corporate customers.
  • The Bank will use the proceeds from these deposits to finance a wide array of sectors falling under the SDG category including, energy efficiency, renewable energy, green transport, sustainable food, agriculture, forestry, waste management and greenhouse gas reduction.
RBL Bank extends co-branded credit cards partnership with Bajaj Finance
RBL Bank announced that it has extended the co-brand credit card partnership with Bajaj Finance Ltd for a period of five years up to December 2026.
  • In FY2018, the Bank had entered into a partnership with Bajaj Finance, launching a series of co-branded credit cards.
  • Per the Bank’s FY2019 annual report, FY2019 also saw the RBL Bank - Bajaj Finance co-brand portfolio cross the 10 lakh cards mark, making it one of the largest co-branded card partnerships in the country.

  • Shami has joined Kapil Dev, Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan, and Ishant Sharma in the elusive list. Shami reached the milestone in 55 Test matches and is the third quickest Indian after Kapil and Srinath to join the list.
  • Shami took a five-wicket haul at the SuperSport Park to reach 200 Test wickets. Shami's exceptional bowling effort helped India bowl South Africa out for a score of 197 in the first innings.

Championship in Odisha
World No. 7 Nitesh Kumar doubled his gold tally at the 4th Para-Badminton National Championship, which concluded in Bhubaneswar, Odisha recently . Haryana's Nitesh along with his partner Tarun defeated World No. 1 Paralympic Games gold medallist Pramod Bhagat and Manoj Sarkar in straight sets 21-19, 21-11 in the Men’s doubles finals to win the gold.
  • Earlier, Nitesh also won the gold medal in the Men’s singles category. World No 1 SL3 Para-Badminton player Parul Parmar from Gujarat also secured gold while Mandeep Kaur from Uttarakhand won Silver and Mansi won bronze.
  • In Women Wheelchair 1 category, Alphia James from Kerala secured gold, while silver went to Neerja Goyal from Uttarakhand. Centre appoints Atul Kumar Goel as new MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Atul Kumar Goel, MD & CEO of UCO Bank, as MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank (PNB) with effect from February 1 next year.
  • Goel will serve as PNB chief until December 31, 2024, which is his attaining the superannuation age.
  • He will serve as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in PNB, which is the country’s second-largest public sector bank, until January 31, 2022.0
Somalia's President suspends PM Mohamed Hussein Roble over corruption allegations
Somalian Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has been suspended. Somalia's President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has suspended the Prime Minister, who is facing allegations of involvement in the theft of land.
  • Mr Farmajo said, he was suspending the Prime Minister pending the outcome of an investigation into the corruption allegations.
  • Mohamed Hussein Roble accused the President of trying to stage a coup and said, he would continue in office.  He urged the security forces to take orders from him rather than Mr Farmajo. The term of Farmajo officially ended in February but was extended because of disagreements over how to choose a new incumbent.

Gujarat: CM launches portal to monitor benefits of state health schemes
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched a health service management centre (HSMC) for monitoring various national and state-level health schemes. He also unveiled the website of the Gujarat Epidemic Response Management Information System (GERMIS) in Gandhinagar.
  • HSMC aims to monitor the benefits received under various government schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana (PMJAY), Mukhyamantri Amrutam (MA) scheme, nutrition-related schemes, maternal and child health schemes, and other similar government schemes, in addition to tracking the number of beneficiaries enrolled.
  • It will also monitor and review the free diagnostic treatment given to patients such as screening for non-communicable diseases.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal launches Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam portal
Haryana Chief Minister, Sh. Manohar Lal launched the portal of Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam along with the announcement of setting up of Atal Park and Smriti Kendra in Gurugram in the programme organized on the occasion of Good Governance Day.

China launches new camera satellite with high resolution to find resources
China launched a new satellite with a camera that can take pictures of the ground with a resolution of five meters, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said.
  • The satellite, called "Ziyuan-1 02E" or "five-meter optical satellite 02," was launched by a Long March-4C rocket from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in north China's Shanxi province.
  • Ziyuan-1 02E weighs about 2.5 kilograms and is equipped with infrared, near-infrared and hyperspectral cameras. The cameras can take full-colour panchromatic images of the Earth.

Seven-term Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Prasad passes away
Rajya Sabha MP from the Janata Dal(United) and industrialist Mahendra Prasad died at a private hospital. He was 81.
  • Estimated to be one of the richest members of Parliament, the founder of Aristo Pharmaceuticals was a seven-term Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar and was also elected to the Lok Sabha once.
  • Prasad was first elected to the Lok Sabha on a Congress ticket in 1980. He remained associated with the party for a long time and shifted his loyalties later as its fortunes declined in the state.
Greece’s former president Karolos Papoulias passes away 
Former Greek President Karolos Papoulias, who served two terms between 2005 and 2015, died at the age of 92, the presidency said.
  • Papoulias, who was also foreign minister in 1985-89 and 1993-96, was a high-ranking member of socialist PASOK party and a close associate of its late leader and former prime minister Andreas Papandreou.

Uttar Pradesh Tops NITI Aayog's Health Index in Terms of Incremental Change
India’s largest state Uttar Pradesh has emerged as the top performer in terms of incremental health performance among larger states, while Mizoram performed well in the smaller states category, according to the fourth Health Index launched by Niti Aayog.
  • Though in terms of overall performance, Kerala was the front-runner, it had nearly half the indicators/sub-indicators where its performance worsened or remained stagnant, the report added.
  • According to the report, the maximum annual incremental performance shown by Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Telangana among larger states, Mizoram and Meghalaya in smaller states segment, while Delhi and J&K among UTs.
World Sangeet Tansen festival organized in Madhya Pradesh
In Madhya Pradesh, World Sangeet Tansen festival begins. The festival will be organised till December 30th  in Gwalior.
  • This is the 97th edition of the festival. AIR correspondent reports, The stage of the program has been constructed on the theme of Siddhanath temple situated in Omkareshwar.
  • State Culture Minister Ms Usha Thakur will preside over the programme. National Kalidas Awards will be presented in the inauguration ceremony.  A total of nine musical concerts will be held at the function.
Tamil Nadu CM Stalin launched ‘Meendum Manjappai’ scheme
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched ‘Meendum Manjappai’ scheme to promote the use of cloth bags by the public and discourage the use of plastic bags, which have become rampant in the State over the years.
  • This awareness campaign on using ‘yellow’ cloth bag or ‘manjapai’ as it is called in Tamil, is aimed at encouraging the people to return to the use of this eco-friendly bag and discard the plastic bags.
  • The state government had enforced a ban on the production, use, storage, distribution, transportation or sale of 14 types of plastics with effect from January 1, 2019.
HM Amit Shah releases Good Governance Index 2021
Union Home Minister Amit Shah released the Good Governance Index 2021 prepared by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances on the occasion of the Good Governance Day in New Delhi.
  • Mr Shah also Good Governance Index (GGI) 2021 Framework covered ten sectors and 58 indicators including Agriculture and Allied Sectors, Commerce and Industries, Public Health Economic Governance and Environment. As per the GGI, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa topped the composite rank score covering 10 sectors.
  • Among the sectors, UP has secured top position in Commerce and Industry sector and has also shown increase in Social Welfare and Development and Judiciary and Public Safety.
  • In the North-East and Hill States category, Mizoram and Jammu and Kashmir have registered an overall increase of 10.4 percent and 3.7 percent over GGI 2019. In the Union Territories category, Delhi tops the composite rank registering a 14 percent increase over 2019 indicators.

HDFC Bank ties up with IPPB to offer banking services in rural areas
India's biggest private lender HDFC Bank has partnered with India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to offer its banking services in semi-urban and rural areas.
  • Under the pact, HDFC will cater to over 4.7 crore customers of IPPB, most of which (around 90 per cent) reside in rural areas.
  • HDFC Bank said this alliance will allow IPPB to provide affordable and diversified offerings to its customers through its doorstep banking service.
IndusInd Bank partners with NPCI to offer cross-border payments via UPI
IndusInd Bank has partnered with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) for offering real-time cross-border remittances to India using UPI IDs, for its Money Transfer Operator (MTO) partners, the bank said.
  • With this initiative, IndusInd Bank has become the first Indian bank to go live on UPI for Cross Border Payments/NRI Remittances.
  • Under this arrangement, the MTOs will be using the IndusInd Bank channel to connect with NPCI’s UPI payment systems for validation and cross-border payment settlement into beneficiary accounts.
Indipaisa partners with NSDL Payments Bank to launch a new Fintech platform targeting India’s flourishing
Indipaisa, a member of the Nexxo Network, an international network of Fintech companies operating in Middle East Asia and Europe, is launching a set of innovative Financial Technology (Fintech) solutions targeting India's flourishing 63 million Small & Mid-sized Enterprise (SME) sector.
  • Indipaisa's mission is to empower SME owners and operators to take charge of their finances as well as give them facilities and services that help them grow their businesses, comply with government tax laws, and build a better future for their families.
  • Indipaisa, in partnership with NSDL Payments Bank, plans to introduce multiple financial products and services customized from the ground up to match the specific needs of Indian SME owners and operators.

India to become 3rd largest economy in 2031, says CEBR
The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) has predicted that India will regain sixth position from France next year and become the third-largest economy in 2031, a year later the previously predicted.
  • CEBR, one of the UK's leading economics consultancies, in its annual World Economic League Table also predicted that China will overtake the US in 2030, two years later than forecast a year ago.The world's economic output will exceed $100 trillion for the first time next year.
  • The London-based think tank said, over the next 15 years, India will see an improvement in its ranking in the World Economic League Table (WELT), rising from 7th place in 2021 to be the world’s third-largest economy in 2036.
  • Economic activity has rebounded in 2021, due to drop in daily new cases of infections. The economy is estimated to grow 8.5% in 2021, due to economic recovery after a contraction of 7.3% in 2020. In July-September quarter of 2021, GDP growth was 8.4%, after recording a sharp rebound of 20.1% in April-June quarter.

  • Kamlesh Gandhi, CMD of MAS Financial Services has been appointed as Co-Chairman, FIDC in addition to Umesh Revankar, CEO and MD of Shriram Transport Finance Group. Sanjay Chamria has resigned as the Co-Chairman and Director, FIDC.
  • Dinanath Dubhashi, MD and CEO, L&T Finance Holdings has been appointed as an additional Director of FIDC.

RBL Bank MD and CEO Vishwavir Ahuja steps down, Rajeev Ahuja takes over
RBL Bank's Vishawvir Ahuja has stepped down as MD & CEO of the bank, and the bank has appointed Rajeev Ahuja as the interim Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the bank with immediate effect.
  • The Reserve Bank of India has also appointed its Chief General Manager Yogesh K. Dayal as an additional director on the board of RBL Bank.
Mohammed Ben Sulayem elected new FIA President
Mohammed ben Sulayem became the first non-European to be elected president of the International Automobile Federation (FIA), succeeding the retiring Jean Todt.
  • The 60-year-old Emirati gained 61.62% of the votes against the 36.62% for his sole rival Britain's Graham Stoker. The former rally driver replaces Todt, who stands down after 12 years at the helm.

Japan launches huge Inmarsat-6 F1 communications satellite into orbit
Japan successfully launched the Inmarsat-6 Flight 1 (I-6 F1) satellite as a part of Inmarsat’s next-generation satellite broadband service. I-6 F1 launched aboard an H-IIA 204 rocket. 
  • Designated H-IIA F45 launch is Japan’s third orbital flight of 2021 and H-IIA’s second mission of the year, marking the 45th flight of the H-IIA vehicle overall.
  • The I-6 pair are the largest and most sophisticated commercial communications satellites ever launched. The I-6 satellites will be compatible with existing terminals for Inmarsat's already-operational ELERA and Global Xpress networks.

A new book by former Indian Army Chief of Staff Gen. Nirmal Chander Vij (ret) claims to offer a “full picture” of the conflicts in Jammu and Kashmir and the way forward. Karnataka CM Extends Raitha Vidya Nidhi Scheme for Girl Students of Classes 8, 9
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, announced extending the Raitha Vidya Nidhi scheme for Class 8 and 9 girls as recent figures show a drop in their enrolment in rural areas.
  • The scheme provides scholarships to children of farmers, it was earlier limited to lower grades. Bommai said that education coupled with farming will help farmers to secure an alternative source of income besides agriculture.
For Now, Covaxin Likely to Be Only Covid Vaccine Available for Children of 15-18 Years: Report
Bharat Biotech's Covaxin is likely to be the only Covid-19 vaccine available, for now, for children in the age group of 15-18 years, who will be inoculated from January 3, official sources said.
  • Also, healthcare and frontline workers and citizens above 60 years of age with comorbidities would be administered the third dose of the same vaccine they had been given before.
  • The decisions came amid rising Covid cases linked to the Omicron variant of the virus. The precaution dose will also be available for citizens above 60 years of age and with comorbidities on the advice of their doctor from January 10 next year as well.

Govt says AYUSH market has grown at 17% in 2014-20 to reach 18 billion dollars
Government has said that the market size of Ayush has grown by 17 percent during 2014 to 2020 to reach 18.1 billion dollars.
  • As per the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS) report, despite a slump in economic activity in 2020 due to Covid pandemic, the industry is projected to reach 20.6 billion dollars in 2021 and 23.3 billion dollars in 2022.
  • Ayush Ministry said that it is determined to revive and promote the traditional Indian medicine system.


BANKING & FINANCE

UPI emerged as favourite digital payment choice with over 22 billion transactions in 2020-21: Govt in Parliament 88 percent growth in the volume of digital transactions were registered in the country during the last three years. This was stated by Union Minister of State for Finance Dr. Bhagwat Kisanrao Karad in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
  • He said, UPI has emerged as favourite digital payment choice with over 22 billion transactions in financial year 2020-21.
  • The Minister said, RuPay debit cards have been issued to Jan-Dhan account holders under Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana. He said, 31.17 crore RuPay debit cards have been issued to PMJDY account holders so far to promote digital transactions in the country.
PNB enters into co-lending arrangement with Lendingkart
Punjab National Bank (PNB) has entered into a co-lending arrangement with Lendingkart Finance Limited as part of its efforts to improve the flow of credit to the unserved and underserved sector of the economy.
  • This arrangement, fourth for PNB, will focus on digital underwriting and cashflow based lending. The ultimate beneficiaries would be MSME borrowers who will get the funds at an affordable rate with greater outreach considering the lower cost of funds from banks and greater reach of the NBFC.
Centre sets up two panels to lower crop insurance premium
The Centre has appointed two separate groups of experts to suggest suitable working models with cost benefit analysis that will lower crop insurance premium and technology in crop yield estimation under the flagship Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). This follows the exit of several States including Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar and West Bengal from the scheme, citing high premium.
  • A ten-member committee under scientist KR Manjunath of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will explore the feasibility of adoption of various technology-based approaches developed through pilot projects by ISRO and its arm National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) as well as Mahalanobis National Crop Forecast Centre (MNCFC) of the Union Agriculture Ministry.
  • The other sub-committee, headed by Saurabh Mishra, joint secretary in Ministry of Finance, will conduct cost benefit analysis of all “accepted models – agriculture insurance pool, cup and cap 80-110 per cent and co-insurance 20-80 per cent” as well as any profit-loss sharing model.

SIDBI signs MoU to develop MSME ecosystem in West Bengal
SIDBI has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of West Bengal to develop the MSME ecosystem in the state, a SIDBI official said. As per the MoU a project management unit (PMU) of SIDBI will work with the state government.
  • The PMU will support the West Bengal government in making necessary interventions for focused engagement of SIDBI with the objective of facilitating development of the MSME ecosystem.
Centre declares Soya Meal as an Essential Commodity up to 30th June, 2022
The Centre imposed stock holding limits on soya meal, which is used as a raw material in the poultry feed industry, till June 2022 to curb hoarding as well as check price rise.
  • The limits will be in place till June 30, 2022 and an order in this regard was issued with effect from December 23.
  • Besides, the government has notified an order under the Essential Commodities Act to declare 'soya meal' as an essential commodity up to June 30, 2022 by amending the Schedule of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955.

Uttar Pradesh crowned 11th Hockey India junior national championship winners
Hockey, Uttar Pradesh were crowned the winners of the 11th Junior National Men’s Championship following a 3-1 victory over Chandigarh in the final at Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu.
  • Tournament top-scorer Sharda Nand Tiwari opened the scoring for Uttar Pradesh in the 15th minute with a trademark penalty corner, before Arun Sahani in 16th and 34th minutes, stretched the lead further with a brace.
  • Raman pulled one goal back for Chandigarh in the 51st minute, but Uttar Pradesh held on to the lead to be crowned champions of the tournament.
Pankaj Advani wins his 11th National Billiards title 
Ace cueist Pankaj Advani defended his national billiards title, his 11th in the tournament after he defeated his PSPB teammate Dhruv Sitwala 5-2 in a best of nine games final.
  • Advani responded with breaks of 56 and 46 to restore parity at 1-1 after Sitwala's breaks of 64 and 42.
Paralympic Champion Krishna Nagar Wins 3 Gold at Nationals Championship
Paralympic champion Krishna Nagar continued his good form as he won three gold medals at the 4th National Para Badminton Championship.
  • Nagar repeated his 2019 National’s feat of winning three gold as he emerged champion in all the categories he participated in — singles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles.
  • Krishna easily beat Sudharshan 21-12 21-12 in the men’s singles SH6 category in a game that lasted just 20 minutes.
  • In mixed doubles, Nagar and Nithya Sre breezed past Dhinagaran and Latatai Umrekar in 17 minutes.

In an attempt to to minimize traffic woes and enhance safety of commuters, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari launched the first Intelligent Transport System on Eastern Peripheral Expressway at Dasna, Ghaziabad.
  • Nitin Gadkari said India needs to improve its road engineering as every year, around 1.5 lakh people are killed in 5 lakh accidents across the country.
  • The ITS can detect any accident and receive alerts to ensure that ambulance reaches the spot within 10-15 minutes.While the speed limit on the 135-km expressway is 120 kmph for cars, the road ministry is working to revise speed limits for different categories of vehicles.
NASA launches world's largest telescope James Webb Space to behold first stars
The world's largest and most powerful space telescope rocketed away on a high-stakes quest to behold light from the first stars and galaxies and scour the universe for hints of life.
  • NASA's James Webb Space Telescope soared from French Guiana on South America's northeastern coast, riding a European Ariane rocket into the Christmas morning sky.
  • The $10 billion observatory hurtled toward its destination one million miles (1.6 million kilometers) away, or more than four times beyond the moon. It will take a month to get there and another five months before its infrared eyes are ready to start scanning the cosmos.

Anti-apartheid campaigner Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu passes away
Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate who helped end apartheid in South Africa, has died aged 90.
  • A contemporary of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, he was was one of the driving forces behind the movement to end the policy of racial segregation and discrimination enforced by the white minority government against the black majority in South Africa from 1948 until 1991.
  • The outspoken Tutu was considered the nation's conscience by both, the black majority and the white minority, an enduring testament to his faith and spirit of reconciliation in a divided nation.
  • He was awarded the Nobel prize in 1984 for his role in the struggle to abolish the apartheid system.
Former Urdu newsreader of AIR Waheed Qureshi passes away in Delhi
The former Urdu newsreader of All India Radio, Waheed Qureshi passed away in New Delhi. He was 79.
  • Waheed Qureshi was associated with News Services Division's Urdu unit of All India Radio for about  35 years.
Kannada film director KV Raju passes away at 67
Noted Kannada film director KV Raju passed away after prolonged illness at his residence in Bengaluru. He was 67
  • He made his debut in 1982 with the Kannada movie Badada Hoovu as an assistant director to his brother K V Jayaram. However, he made a mark as a scriptwriter and director with the movie Olave Baduku in 1984.
  • The ace director gave many hit movies such as Sangrama, Bandha Mukta and Yuddhakanda.
