Andhra Pradesh introduces programme to transform foundational learning with World Bank aid
Andhra Pradesh has started a programme to transform foundational learning in government schools for which the World Bank has approved a loan of 250 million dollars.
  • The main objectives of the programme called Supporting Andhra’s Learning Transformation (SALT) are strengthening foundation schools and providing training and skill development to teachers.
  • Establishing and strengthening foundation schools is in tune with the National Education Policy, 2020, and Andhra Pradesh aims to become the first state to do so.
Govt Allocates Additional Rs 19,041 Cr for Broadband Connectivity in Villages Under BharatNet
The government allocated an additional Rs 19,041 crore to provide broadband connectivity in all villages under the BharatNet project.
  • Under the BharatNet project, the government initially targeted to cover all 2.52 lakh gram panchayats with high-speed broadband services. The Prime Minister later announced expansion of the project to cover all villages as well.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

US Announces USD 41 Million Additional Covid-19 Assistance to India
The US has announced an additional USD 41 million assistance to help India respond to the Covid-19 pandemic and strengthen the country’s preparedness for the future health emergencies, taking the total aid to more than USD 200 million. 
  • USAID’s assistance will support access to Covid-19 testing, pandemic-related mental health services, timely referrals to medical services, and access to healthcare in remote areas.
  • Through this additional funding, USAID will continue to partner with India to strengthen healthcare supply chains and electronic health information systems, support its vaccination efforts, and mobilize and coordinate private sector relief.
Turkey, Azerbaijan Begin Joint Military Drills In Baku
The Turkish and Azerbaijani militaries have started joint drills called "Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 2021," in Baku, Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry said.
  • The two countries deployed tanks, helicopters and drones in the drills in an effort to improve the two countries' combat interoperability.
  • The drill aims to enhance the interaction of the two militaries during combat operations and develop the decision-making and managing skills of commanders.
UNEP, Massive Earth Foundation to launch LowCarbon.Earth for the Asia-Pacific
In a bid to boost the start-up ecosystem and promoting the transition to a Low Carbon Lifestyle in the Asia Pacific, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with Massive Earth Foundation (MEF) has announced the launch of LowCarbon.Earth.
  • A first of its kind unique initiative of Industry-Academia Partnership, the program will provide a platform for start-ups to interact with established corporates, leading technology companies and industry mentors to build collective capabilities for the industry in the cutting-edge areas of advanced sustainable technologies.
  • MEF along with the UNEP, through this initiative, aims to tap the potential of emerging technologies like Low Carbon Energy, Low Carbon Mobility, Low Carbon Agriculture, Low Carbon Packaging, Low Carbon Buildings and Low Carbon Consumption to uncover start-ups and seed a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and product development amongst young professionals in the region.
Six Indian Medical Colleges find place in list of 100 best medical colleges of world
Six medical colleges from India have found a place in the list of the World's 100 best medical colleges for the year 2021, in a ranking released by CEO World Magazine.
  • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Delhi has bagged 23rd position, while AFMC Pune has bagged 34th rank, followed by CMC Vellore (49), JIPMER Pondicherry (59), Medical College Chennai (64), and IMS BHU Varanasi (72).
  • The US-based Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine ranked first with the highest score of 99.06, followed by Harvard Medical School, Perelman School of Medicine, and NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
INS Tabar deployed to participate in joint exercises with friendly navies
Towards enhancing military cooperation with friendly nations, Indian Naval Ship Tabar commenced her prolonged deployment on 13 June and will visit a number of ports in Africa and Europe till end September. 
  • The ship will participate in a number of joint exercises with friendly navies.In addition to PASSEX with host navies of countries being visited, the ship is also scheduled to participate in bilateral exercises like Ex Konkan with Royal Navy, Ex Varuna with  French Navy and Ex Indra with Russian Federation Navy.
  • The deployment will also see participation by the ship in the Russian Navy Day celebrations from 22 to 27 July.

Gadkari launches Indian Bank’s ‘MSME Prerana’ in Maharashtra
Indian Bank launches its flagship Business Mentoring Program ‘MSME Prerana’ in the state of Maharashtra. It was launched by Shri Nitin Gadkari,Union Minister of MSME and Road, Transport and Highway.
  •  ‘MSME Prerana’ is a novel, unique and innovative business mentoring program, first of its kind to empower MSME Entrepreneurs. The program will begin from Nagpur followed by other important cities in Maharashtra.
  • Indian Bank is providing financial support to its 20 lakhs MSMEs with credit exposure of over ₹70,180 cr ‘MSME Prerana’ has been launched with an aim to develop managerial and financial capabilities of MSME Entrepreneurs besides creating awareness on various initiatives taken by GOI / State Govts. / RBI and Other agencies.
Commercial Bank of Kuwait selects TCS' BaNCS for treasury solutions
Commercial Bank of Kuwait has selected Tata Consultancy Services Ltd.'s 'BaNCS for Treasury' solution to "manage risk better, enhance asset class coverage, and drive future growth".
  • The software product will help CBK offer a wider range of cash and derivative treasury products, integrate various trading and messaging platforms, manage cash and positions in real time, and offer extensive accounting and reporting capabilities.
  • This front-to-back, cross-asset solution will enable the bank to lay a firm foundation for digitisation and expand its customer base.
Dvara e-Dairy partners with IFFCO Tokio for digital cattle identity solution
Dvara e-Dairy Solutions Pvt Ltd announced its partnership with IFFCO Tokio General Insurance for providing artificial intelligence (AI) powered digital cattle identity solution for cattle insurance.
  • The company''s ''Surabhi e-Tag'' is AI-powered digital tag that identifies cattle based on muzzle identity.
  • Muzzle images of the cattle are collected through the Surabhi mobile application and stored in hi-resolution images as a unique digital identity.

Badminton Sudirman Cup moved to Finland, World Tour Finals to Indonesia
In badminton, two key tournaments, the Sudirman Cup Finals 2021 and the BWF World Tour Finals, which were originally planned to take place in China this year, have now been moved to Vantaa, Finland and Bali, Indonesia respectively.
  • Vantaa, Finland is the new host of the Sudirman Cup Finals 2021 from September 26 to October 3, followed by the Thomas and Uber Cup Finals 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark which had been postponed last year.
  • The final tournament of the calendar year will be the World Championships in Huelva, Spain in mid-December.
BCCI confirms 2021 T20 World Cup switch to UAE
The BCCI has communicated to its member associations that this year’s T20 World Cup will be held in the UAE.
  • However, BCCI retains the hosting rights of the 16-team event that is scheduled to begin on October 17
Anshula Rao First Woman Cricketer To Get Dope Ban
Madhya Pradesh allrounder Anshula Rao has been handed a four-year ban by the National Anti-Doping Agency for failing a dope test, backdated to July 2020.
  • Rao thus becomes the first woman cricketer to have been punished for doping.
  • She tested positive for the aforementioned steroid last year in March 14 in Baroda and subsequently, failed to prove that the banned substance entered her body unknowingly.
Mithali Raj Back in Top Five of ICC ODI Rankings for Batswomen
India captain Mithali Raj has returned to the top five of the latest ICC Women’s ODI Rankings for batswomen after top-scoring for India with 72 in the series opener against England in Bristol.
  • The 38-year-old, who has completed 22 years in international cricket, rescued her side from a precarious 27 for two but India’s total of 201 for eight was not challenging enough for England, who will be defending their World Cup title in New Zealand next year.
  • Hard-hitting opener Shafali Verma, the top-ranked T20I batter, has entered the ODI rankings at 120th place after scoring a 14-ball 15 on debut.

Shambhu Nath Srivastava Appointed As The Chairman Of IFUNA
Shambhu Nath Srivastava, a former judge of Allahabad High Court and former chief Lokayukta of Chhattisgarh, has been appointed the chairman of the Indian Federation of United Nations Associations (IFUNA) .
  • He succeeds Mukul Sangma, a former chief minister of Meghalaya.
  • The IFUNA, affiliated to the World Federation of United Nations Associaions, (WFUNA) Geneva, enjoys special consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations, brings people and issues together to promote collective acton for a sustainable world.
Deputy EC Umesh Sinha Gets One-Year Extension
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet gave a one-year extension to Deputy Election Commissioner Umesh Sinha.
  • Sinha is a former Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer.
  • Sinha has been given an extension till June 30, 2022, a notification said.

Journalist P Sainath Wins Japan’s Fukuoka Grand Prize
Renowned journalist and founder of PARI (People’s Archive of Rural India) P Sainath has been awarded the Fukuoka Grand Prize for 2021.
  • The award, established by Japan’s Fukuoka city and the Fukuoka City International Foundation, is given to individuals and organisations for their work in preserving Asian culture.
  • Besides the Grand Prize, there are two more award categories, academics and culture. The Academics Prize was given to Professor Kishimoto Mio, a historian from Japan who specialises in the socio-economic history of China in the Ming-Qing period. Thailand-based writer and filmmaker Prabda Yoon received the Arts and Culture Award.

Dept of Justice launches Enforcing Contracts Portal
The Department of Justice has launched Enforcing Contracts Portal. The portal aims to promote ease of doing business and improve the ‘Contract Enforcement Regime’ in the country.
  • The portal will provide easy access to latest information on commercial cases in Dedicated Commercial Courts of Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Kolkata. The portal will also provide access to a repository of commercial laws.

Pakistan's former caretaker PM Mir Hazar Khoso passes away
Pakistan's former caretaker Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso passed away due to a cardiac arrest. He was 95.
  • Khoso was a retired judge and served as acting Prime Minister for three months in 2013 to oversee the federal elections which resulted in the victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

FM Sitharaman’s Announces Relief Package Worth Rs 6,28,993 Crore Against COVID-19
Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced eight relief measures worth Rs 6,28,993 crore to help revival of the economy battered by Covid-19.
  • The Centre has announced Rs 1.5 lakh crore of additional credit for small and medium businesses, more funds for the healthcare sector, loans to tourism agencies and guides, and waiver of visa fee for foreign tourists as part of a package to support the pandemic-hit economy.
  • Together with previously announced Rs 93,869 crore spending on providing free foodgrains to the poor till November and additional Rs 14,775 crore fertiliser subsidy, the stimulus package -- mostly made up of government guarantee to banks and microfinance institutions for loans they extend to Covid-hit sectors -- totalled up to Rs 6.29 lakh crore.

Ashgabat World’s Most Expensive City For Foreign Workers
Turkmenistan’s capital city Ashgabat has become the world’s most expensive city for foreign workers, according to this year’s Mercer Cost of Living Survey. Hong Kong was on the second position, followed by Beirut in Lebanon and Tokyo in Japan.
  • The annual report has ranked 209 cities across five continents by measuring the comparative cost of more than 200 items, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. The survey used New York City, ranked 14 on the list, as the base city and currency movements were measured against the US dollar.
  • List of top 10 expensive cities mostly features global financial hubs like Hong Kong, which was the priciest last year, Tokyo, Shanghai, Zurich and Singapore.
  • Mumbai remains India’s most expensive city at 78th rank but has dropped 18 places in this year’s ranking “due to a relatively weak Indian rupee in comparison with other cities in the ranking.” Other Indian cities on the list are New Delhi (117), Chennai (158), Bengaluru (170), and Kolkata (181).
Ukraine And U.S. Launch “Sea Breeze Drills”
Ukraine and the United States launched joint naval exercises “Sea Breeze Drills”  in the Black Sea in a show of Western cooperation with Kiev as it faces off with Russia.
  • The drills come just days after the British Royal Navy’s HMS Defender passed near Russian-annexed Crimea in the Black Sea, with Moscow saying it fired warning shots at the destroyer to ward it off.
  • The Sea Breeze drills — which have taken place 21 times since 1997 — will involve some 5,000 military personnel from more than 30 countries.

AMNS India executes paperless bill discounting transaction with ICICI Bank
Gujarat-based ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) India said it has executed India's very first "paperless bill discounting transaction" in partnership with ICICI Bank.
  • The transaction, end-to-end electronic in nature, comprising digital issuance of letter of credit (LC), advisory and presentation of documents, took place among AMNS India, its customer, and ICICI Bank.
  • ICICI Bank's branch in Baroda issued the LC to the buyer, Vijay Tanks, while its Hazira, Surat-based branch negotiated on behalf of the seller, AMNS India.

NTPC sets target to install 60 GW renewable energy capacity by 2032
India's largest power producer NTPC has set a target to install 60 GW (gigawatts) of renewable energy capacity as part of the plan to reduce by 10% its net energy intensity by 2032.
  • In addition, the coal-burning behemoth has declared that it will form at least two international alliances/groups to facilitate clean energy research and promote sustainability in the energy value chain by 2025.
  • These commitments make NTPC the first company in India’s energy domain to declare its Energy Compact goals as part of UN High-level Dialogue on Energy.

Twitter Appoints California-Based Jeremy Kessel As India Grievance Officer
Twitter appointed California-based Jeremy Kessel as the new Grievance Officer for India, as required under the new Information Technology Rules, 2021, hours after Dharmendra Chatur quit from the post, Bar and Bench reported.
  • His appointment, however, is not seen to be in line with new IT rules guidelines, which mandate that the grievance redressal officer should be a resident of India.
Praveen Sinha Appointed As Special Director Of CBI 
CBI Additional Director Praveen Sinha has been appointed as Special Director of Central Bureau of Investigation, a post earlier held by Rakesh Asthana. 
  • A Gujarat-cadre IPS officer of 1988 batch, Sinha has served in the agency as superintendent of police, deputy inspector general, joint director and additional director in two stints between 2000 and 2021.
WhatsApp Appoints Manesh Mahatme As Head Of Payments In India
WhatsApp has appointed former Amazon executive Manesh Mahatme to head its newly launched payment service in the country.

Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Lofven resigned, one week after he lost a vote of no confidence, leaving it up to the speaker of parliament to begin the search for a replacement
  • The 63-year-old Lofven is the first Swedish government leader to be defeated by a no-confidence vote. He was serving as the prime minister of Sweden since 2014 and then hung on by moving his party closer to the centre right after the 2018 elections.
Attorney General KK Venugopal's term extended by one year
The government has extended the tenure of Attorney General K.K. Venugopal by a year.
  • Mr. Venugopal will continue as the government’s top law officer till June 30, 2022. 
  • This is the second time the Centre has extended his tenure. Mr. Venugopal, who was appointed Attorney General in July 2017, received his first extension of term in 2020.

French author Emmanuel Carrere, popular for his non-fiction books in a high literary vein, has been granted this year’s Spanish Princess of Asturias Literature Award.
  • The award is one of the eight prestigious prizes by the foundation named after the heir to the Spanish throne, Princess Leonor.
  • The 50,000-euro award is handed out annually during a lavish ceremony, normally in October, by the Princess of Asturias Foundation, which is presided over by Princess Leonor’s father, King Felipe VI.

DRDO Successfully Flight-Tests ‘Agni P’ Ballistic Missile Off Odisha Coast
In another boost to India's firepower, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the test-firing of a new missile of the Agni series known as Agni-Prime off the coast of Odisha from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island .
  • Agni P is an advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles and is a canisterised missile with a range capability between 1000km and 2000km.
  • The ballistic missile weighs 50% less than Agni 3 and has new guidance and a new generation of propulsion. Since the missile is canisterised, it can be launched from rail and road and stored for a longer period and transported all across the country as per operational requirements.

Thiruvananthapuram's wasteland yields a new plant species
A subshrub spotted on the roadsides and wastelands in Thiruvananthapuram district has been identified as a new species of the genus Sida, to which the Kurumthotti, used in Ayurveda, also belongs.
  • Named Sida keralensis, the plant was spotted during a floristic survey at Maruthur in the district. A subsequent search helped confirm the presence of the plant, which belongs to the family Malvaceae, in nearby areas such as Vattapara as well.
  • Its discovery has taken the number of species in the genus Sida endemic to India from six to seven.

In a virtual program from Kyungam in Leh district, Rajnath Singh inaugurated 63 Border Roads Organization bridges in eight states in the country.
  • From Eastern Ladakh, at an altitude of 11 thousand 800 ft along with 50 Mtr Kunjan bridge across mighty Indus river on Leh-Loma road, Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated 62 various other bridges built by 15 various projects of Border Roads Organization (BRO), in Eight States across the country.
A Zen Garden and Kaizen Academy inaugurated by Prime Minister at Ahmedabad in Gujarat
Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a Japanese Zen garden and Kaizen academy at the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA).
  • It will showcase several elements of Japanese art, culture, landscape and architecture.

Govt launches LiDAR survey reports to augment water in forest areas
Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Prakash Javadekar, in a virtual event, released the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) of LiDAR based survey of forest areas in ten states namely Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
  • The project, which was awarded to WAPCOS—a PSU under the aegis of Ministry of Jal Shakti, at a cost of Rs.18.38 crore for implementation in 26 states over 261897 hectare.The project is a first of its kind and a unique experiment using LiDAR technology.
  • The project would help augment water and fodder in jungles areas thereby reducing human-animal conflict, help in groundwater recharge, help local communities.
JSCA, SAIL-BSL Inks MoU For International Cricket Stadium In Bokaro
The Jharkhand State Cricket Association, affiliated with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has signed a lease agreement with Bokaro Steel Plant for the construction of an international cricket stadium.
  • BSL is a unit of Steel Authority of India Limited, and the first city of Maharatna to house an international cricket stadium.
  • The JSCA claimed Jharkhand will become the first state in the country to have three world-class stadiums.

Japan to Provide $9.3 Million Aid to India for Building Cold Chain System to Fight Covid
Japan announced that it will provide USD 9.3 million worth cold chain equipment and related assistance to India to help in the country's fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The assistance, under Japan's Emergency Grant Aid scheme, will provide India with cold chain equipment including medical equipment such as cold-storage facilities, as Last One Mile Support to ensure vaccination in each country, through the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).
9th Moscow Conference on International Security held
Defence Secretary Dr Ajay Kumar addressed at the plenary session of the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security on the topic ‘Role of Military Agencies in fighting against COVID-19’, in Moscow, Russia.
  • The Defence Secretary highlighted India’s support to friendly nations by deploying Rapid Response Medical Teams to provide medical assistance to those in need. Medical supplies of various kinds were sent to 150 countries.

RBI launches FY21 round of survey on ITES exports
 
The Reserve Bank said it has launched the 2020-21 round of its annual survey on computer software and information technology enabled services (ITES) exports, results of which are used for compilation of balance of payments statistics. The RBI has been conducting this annual survey since 2002-03.
  • It collects data on various aspects of computer services exports as well as exports of ITES and business process outsourcing (BPO).
  • The RBI said it has also launched the 2020-21 round of the annual survey on 'Foreign Liabilities and Assets of Mutual Funds and Asset Management Companies'.The survey collects information from mutual fund companies and asset management companies on their external financial liabilities and assets as at end-March of the latest financial year.

China is now second largest export partner of India
China replaced the UAE as the second largest export destination for India in fiscal 2021, with outbound shipments to the neighbouring country rising 27.53% to $21.18 billion in the pandemic year.
  • The US remained the country’s top export partner but shipments declined 2.78% to $51.63 billion in a year. Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Singapore were the other top markets for India last fiscal year.
  • India aims to post $400 billion of merchandise exports in the ongoing FY22. Exports in FY21 shrank 7.3% to $290.6 billion while imports fell 18% to $389.2 billion, leading to a trade deficit of $98.6 billion.
Ind-Ra Revises India’s GDP Growth Rate For FY22 At 9.6%
The Indian economy is likely to grow by 9.6 per cent in the current fiscal year 2021-22, according to credit rating agency India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra).
  • The company trimmed its projection of the gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the current fiscal from 10.1 per cent to 9.6 per cent, due to the scale of the second wave of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

Amazon’s AWS Acquires Encrypted Messaging App Wickr
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has acquired a messaging application Wickr to offer secure communications for businesses, government agencies, and individuals, who are moving to hybrid work environments, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The messaging application which was founded in 2012, boasts of emphasis on encryption.
  • The messaging application Wickr rivals the likes of Signal for providing encryption. The application has even been used by journalists and whistleblowers.
LIC, SBI Life, Canara Bank pick up stakes in Indian Bank under QIP
Life Insurance Corporation (LIC), SBI Life and Canara Bank were among the top investors picking up stakes in Indian Bank under a QIP, according to a regulatory filing.
  • The country's largest and the only state-owned life insurer, LIC, picked up 17.80 per cent of the shares issued under the qualified institutional placement (QIP).It was followed by SBI Life Insurance (11.87 per cent), SBI Mutual Fund and its various schemes (11.87 per cent), Societe Generale and its various schemes (9.74 per cent) and Canara Bank subscribing to 5.93 per cent of the shares offered in the issue.
  • Indian Bank raised a total of Rs 1,650 crore in its QIP of shares, which were issued at Rs 142.15 apiece.

Digital healthcare company Pharmeasy announced that it will acquire a controlling stake in diagnostic chain Thyrocare for Rs 4,546 crore.
  • Under the transaction, the Delhi-based company will buy 66.1 per cent stake in Thyrocare from Velumani and his affiliates at Rs 1,300 per share.

The 27-year-old from Ranchi, who had achieved the top spot for the first time in 2012, claimed gold medals in three recurve events — women’s individual, team and mixed pair.
  • Deepika first combined with Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari to notch up the women’s recurve team gold with a comfortable win over Mexico.
  • She then paired up with husband Atanu Das and the couple from a 0-2 deficit to down the Netherland’s Sjef van den Berg and Gabriela Schloesser 5-3 for the gold medal.
  • The Ranchi archer then blanked 17th ranked Russian Elena Osipova 6-0 to cap a perfect three out of three in the recurve women’s section, her fourth individual World Cup gold medal.

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced a ‘Cheer Up’ campaign for the Olympic-bound Indian athletes across the country and urged people to come out in support of the sportspersons, who will be competing at the Tokyo Games beginning July 23.
  • Over 100 athletes from India have so far qualified for the Games and Rijiju said over 6000 selfie points will be set up in the country for people to show their support.
Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes Joint Top-Scorer In Men’s International Football
Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo has become the joint top-scorer in men's international football. He achieved the feat in Portugal's Euro 2020 game against France at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.
  • Ronaldo scored two goals from the spot against France and as a result, he now has 109 goals from 176 matches for Portugal.
  • The striker is currently tied with Iran's legend Ali Daei, who also scored 109 goals from 149 matches.

NDDB executive director Meenesh Shah takes additional charge as Chairman
Meenesh Shah, executive director (ED) of Anand-headquartered National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has been given additional charge of the post of chairman.
  • Shah had taken over the post for a period of six months with effect from June 1 until further orders as the tenure of NDDB’s interim chairman Varsha Joshi ended on May 31.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawaarchand Gehlot launched the website for the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan on the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
  • Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Mr Gehlot stated that according to the National Comprehensive Survey conducted by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, there are more than 60 million drug users in the country of which a large number of users are in the age group of 10 to 17 years.
  • He expressed hope that as a part of celebration of 75 years of Independence, the government will soon be able to declare at least 100 districts drug free.

Parassala B Ponnammal, a doyen of carnatic music from Kerala passed away She was 96.
  • In 2006, Parassala B Ponnammal became the first woman in 300 years of tradition to sing at the famed Navaratri Celebrations of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple.
  • In 2017, Parassala B Ponnammal was awarded the Padma Shri. She also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Swathi Sangeetha Puraskaram in 2009.
