Govt targets 17 million tonnes mustard production by 2025-26
The Government plans to bring around nine million hectares of land under mustard cultivation and raise the production to around 17 million tonnes (mt) by 2025-26, according to Shubha Thakur, Joint Secretary (Oilseeds), Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare.
  • In the Rabi of 2021, the area covered under mustard was around 7.3 million hectares and an increase of around 4 lakh hectares over the Rabi of 2020.
  • To achieve the target for 2025-26, it is being planned to provide high quality seeds to the farmers, and the Government has embarked upon a proper seed planning.
Haryana allots 140 acre land to Flipkart for setting up its largest fulfilment centre in Asia
The Haryana government has approved allotment of 140 acres of land to e-commerce major Flipkart for setting up its largest fulfilment centre in Asia, having a covered area of 3 million square feet in Patli Hajipur in Gurugram district's Manesar.
  • The land, belonging to Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (HSIIDC), has been allotted at a price of Rs 3.22 crore per acre.


BANKING & FINANCE

Government infuses Rs 200 crore capital in IFCI
In line with Budget announcement, the government has infused Rs 200 crore capital in state-owned IFCI to improve its financial health.
  • Following the capital infusion, the government holding in the financial institution has increased to 63.8 per cent from earlier 61.02 per cent.
  • The infusion was done through preferential issue of equity shares. The government had committed Rs 200 crore to IFCI in the Budget 2020-21.
ADB provides $1.5 billion to India to deal with Covid-19
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it has provided $ 1.5 billion to India to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The institution had announced a package of $ 20 billion in April 2020 to provide financial support to 26 countries to help fight the pandemic.
NPCI subsidiary partners with FSS to accelerate UPI’s global expansion plans
Financial Software and Systems (FSS) has partnered with NPCI International Payments to expand the presence of digital payments platform Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in international markets.
  • The FSS and NIPL collaboration brings together complementary capabilities to deliver a compelling end-to-end proposition to activate real-time payments at speed and minimal risk.
  • Under the partnership, NIPL will offer its real time payments processing platform and technical acumen to scheme operators, while FSS will extend integration and support services.

Google pledges Rs 135 crore in funding to help India fight Covid-19
As  the Covid-19 crisis intensifies in India, tech companies are coming forward to offer help. Google has now announced Rs 135 crore in new funding for India, including two grants from Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the tech giant. The total amount from these grants is Rs 20 crore.
  • The first one will go to GiveIndia while the second fund is for UNICEF, both of which will help in procuring medical supplies and help families affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.


ACQUISITIONS & MERGERS 

Amazon acquires Perpule to aid kirana-tech
Amazon Technologies Inc., part of Amazon.com Inc., has acquired retail tech startup Perpule in an all cash-deal of ₹107.6 crore to bolster its play in the kirana-tech space.
  • Amazon is expected to pay additional remuneration to Bengaluru-based Perpule’s employees, which may bump up the overall deal value to about ₹150 crore.
  • With this, the firm plans to up its game in the kirana-tech space as it would now leverage Perpule’s cloud-based point-of-sale (PoS) offering ‘UltraPoS’ and offer a new suite of technology products to kirana partners, while digitizing neighbourhood stores.

BRO Appoints First Woman Officer For Road Project Along Border With China
In a first, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has appointed a woman officer to command a Road Construction Company (RCC) tasked to provide connectivity in a high-altitude area along the India-China border, officials said.
  • They said Vaishali S Hiwase from Wardha in Maharastra will discharge her duties in a challenging environment.
K Madhavan named president, Walt Disney Co India, Star India
Media and entertainment conglomerate Walt Disney has named K. Madhavan as president, the Walt Disney Company India and Star India, with immediate effect.
  • Madhavan takes over from Uday Shankar who had stepped down as president, the Walt Disney Company APAC and chairman, Star and Disney India, last October.
Axis Bank board approves re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as MD & CEO
Private sector lender Axis Bank said its board has approved the re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as its Managing Director and CEO for three years with effect from January 1, 2022.
  • The appointment will be subject to the approval of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and shareholders of the bank.
  • Prior to joining Axis Bank, Chaudhry was MD and CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company.
WhatsApp Pay appoints Amazon's Manesh Mahatme as India head
WhatsApp Pay has hired senior Amazon executive Manesh Mahatme to head its newly launched payment service in India.
  • Manesh Mahatme, a seven-year Amazon Pay executive, was hired by WhatsApp at a time when digital messaging, shopping and payments is at a historic high in India and throughout much of the world.
Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja becomes ASICS brand ambassador
Sportswear brand ASICS announced that it has appointed Ravindra Jadeja, the all-rounder of the Indian cricket team and Chennai Super Kings as its brand ambassador.
  • The company, which focuses on sporting gear for the running category, said that its partnership with Jadeja would further strengthen the company’s commitment, spread awareness about its diverse offerings, and magnify the reach of the brand during the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

Krithi Karanth becomes first Indian woman to be chosen as a 'Wild Innovator'
Dr.Krithi K Karanth, Chief Conservation Scientist at Bengaluru-based Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS), has been chosen as the first Indian and Asian woman for the 2021 ''WILD Innovator Award''.
  • This award given by the ''WILD ELEMENTS Foundation'' brings together a coalition of innovators, advocates and partners to "disrupt the status quo and identify solutions to global sustainability and conservation."
  • The other winners are Richelle Thomas (USA), Abigail Williams and Jayne Goss (United Kingdom), Erika Allen and Laurell Sims (USA), AnnaSophia Robb, Genesis Butler (USA), Sheila Funnell (Kenya), Rosamira Guillen (Colombia), Resson Kantai Duff (Kenya), Dr.Adriana Verges (Australia), and Dominique Goncalves (Mozambique).
Jio Platforms, Byju's in Time Magazine's First-ever List of 100 Most Influential Firms
Two Indian firms, Reliance Industries’ technology arm Jio Platforms and e-learning startup Byju’s have figured in the Time Magazine’s first-ever list of 100 most influential companies.
  • It listed Jio Platforms under the Innovators category alongside Zoom, Adidas, TikTok, Ikea, Moderna and Netflix.
  • Byju's was listed alongside Tesla, Huawei, Shopify, Airbnb and DiDi Chuxing in the Disruptors category.
Mary Kom wins Sportstar Aces Sportstar of the Decade
M. C. Mary Kom, the only boxer – male or female – to win eight world championships medals, was named Sportstar of the Decade at the 2021 Sportstar ACES Awards.
  • Abhinav Bindra, the only Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal, was conferred the Inspirational Giant of Indian Sport honour.
  • Former World No. 1 K. Srikanth and reigning badminton World champion P.V. Sindhu bagged the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Decade (Racquet Sports) titles.National badminton coach P. Gopi Chand, who bagged the Coach of the Decade Trophy. 
  • The 2021 edition of the Sportstar ACES Awards honoured the Giants of the Decade in Indian sport, with the winners being assessing on their performance and consistency from 2011 to 2020.

DRDO successfully conducts maiden trial of Python-5 Air to Air Missile
India's indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, has added the 5th generation Python-5 Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) in its air-to-air weapons capability.
  • The trials conducted were also aimed to validate enhanced capability of the already integrated Derby Beyond Visual Range (BVR) AAM on Tejas.
  • The test firing at Goa completed a series of missile trials to validate its performance under extremely challenging scenarios. Derby missile achieved direct hit on a high-speed maneuvering aerial target and the Python missiles also achieved 100% hits, thereby validating their complete capability.
DRDO develops single crystal blades for helicopter engines
The Defence Research and Development Organisation(DRDO) has developed a single crystal blade technology as part of their indigenous helicopter development program for the helicopter engine application.
  • This is part of a program that has been taken up by the Defence Metallurgical Research laboratory- DMRL.
  • It is a premium laboratory of DRDO which will develop 5 sets (300 numbers) of single-crystal high-pressure turbine- HPT blades. They will be developed with the use of a nickel-based superalloy.

Former Attorney General Soli Sorabjee passes away 
Former Attorney General of India and renowned jurist Soli Sorabjee died of Covid-19 at a private hospital in New Delhi. He was 91.
  • Serving as a legal professional for nearly seven decades, Sorabjee occupied the highest office of the attorney general of India twice — first from 1989-90 and then from 1998-2004.
Senior Congress Leader Eknath Gaikwad passes away 
Former MP and veteran Congress leader Eknath Gaikwad passed away after losing a battle with Covid-19. He was 81.
  • A two-time Lok Sabha MP, Gaikwad had represented the Mumbai South Central consituency. He had also served as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, winning thrice from Dharavi.
Noted Hindi litterateur Manzoor Ahthesham passes away 
Noted Hindi litterateur and Padma Shri awardee Manzoor Ahthesham has died of Covid-19 in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. He was 73.
  • He was honoured with Padma Shri Award (fourth highest civilian award) in 2003.
Australian swimming great John Konrads passes away 
John Konrads, who set 26 individual freestyle swimming world records and won an Olympic gold medal in 1960, has died. He was 78.
  • At the age of 14, Konrads was a reserve for Australia’s Olympic swim team at the 1956 Melbourne Games.
  • Four years later Konrads won the 1,500-meter freestyle gold and two bronze medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. He was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1985.

Aditya-L1 Support Cell provides all data on board India’s first dedicated solar space mission
A community service centre has been set up to bring all data on board India’s first dedicated solar space mission to a single web-based interface.The service centre is called Aditya-L1 Support Cell.
  • It is a joint effort of Indian Space Research Organisation and Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences.
  • It will allow every interested individual to perform scientific analysis of the data.
Maharashtra to appoint oxygen nurses to curb wastage of oxygen at hospitals
Maharashtra Health Minister Dr. Rajesh Tope has said that the state needs to appoint oxygen Nurses to curb wastage of oxygen and to maintain data of oxygen storage at hospitals.
  • He gave the example of Nandurbar district which adopted the good practice of appointing oxygen nurses in the year 2020.
  • The primary job of an oxygen nurse is to monitor the requirement of oxygen every 2-4 hours round the clock, its use among patients and to ensure minimum wastage.
  • Instruction has been issued to all government medical colleges and hospitals to set up a dedicated team of nurses.
Cabinet approves signing and ratification of Agreement between India, UK on Customs Cooperation and Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters
The Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the signing and ratification of an Agreement between India and the United Kingdom on Customs Cooperation and Mutual Administrative Assistance in Customs Matters.
  • The agreement would provide a legal framework for sharing information and intelligence between the Customs authorities of the two countries.
  •  It would help in proper application of Customs laws, prevention and investigation of Customs offences and the facilitation of legitimate trade.

Karnal District Administration in Haryana has started a unique 'Oxygen on Wheels' initiative to ensure incessant supply of Medical Oxygen to both Government & Private Hospitals.
  • Under this initiative a carrier vehicle called as Mobile oxygen bank loaded with 100 Oxygen Cylinders reaches out to any district hospital which requisitions its urgent supply.

India ranks 49th in Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI) 2021
India has been ranked 49th in the Chandler Good Government Index (CGGI), which classifies 104 countries in terms of government capabilities and outcomes.
  • The Chandler Good Government Index shows the importance of measuring and investing in governance capabilities that matter.
  • Finland has topped the CGGI list, in which each country is measured across over 50 open data points and Venezuela is the last ranked country at 104.The second place was secured by Switzerland, Singapore, Netherlands and Demark.
India third-largest military spender after the US and China
India was the third largest military spender in the world in 2020, behind only the US and China.
  • According to the latest military expenditure database published by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, which tracks military expenditure and arms trade globally, the US accounted for 39 per cent of the money spent on military globally, China accounted for 13 per cent, and India accounted for 3.7 per cent of the globe’s share.
  • The US spent a total of $778 billion in 2020, China spent $252 billion and India’s military expenditure was $72.9 billion.

Government has left GPF and other non-government PF interest rate unchanged at 7.1 percent.
  • Department of Economic Affairs said that GPF and other Special Deposit Scheme interest rate of 7.1 percent will be applicable for April to June quarter of the current financial year.

IHS Markit predicts India's FY22 GDP growth at 9.6%
London-based financial services company IHS Markit has projected the GDP growth rate of the Indian economy to grow at 9.6 per cent in FY22 (2021-22).
  • The revision is based on factors like ongoing lockdown and mobility curbs coupled with fears of an extension, time-wise and across more Indian cities.

Amit Banerjee has been appointed as the new Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of BEML Limited, a Miniratna Defence PSU under the Ministry of Defence.
  • He succeeds former BEML CMD DK Hota, who superannuated on January 31, 2021.
  • Currently, Banerjee is serving as Director (Rail & Metro Business) in BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) Limited.

China launches robot prototype capable of catching space debris with net
A Chinese space mining start-up launched into low Earth orbit a robot prototype that can scoop up debris left behind by other spacecraft with a big net.
  • The NEO-01, which will also peer into deep space to observe small celestial bodies, was launched on the government's Long March 6 rocket along with a handful of satellites, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
  • The 30kg robot developed by Shenzhen-based Origin Space will pave the way for future technologies capable of mining on asteroids.

Odia and English author Manoj Das passes away 
Manoj Das, a prolific Indian author who wrote in Odia and English language passed away at the age of 87 due to age-related ailments.
  • Manoj Das, a bilingual writer, and a columnist were conferred with Padma Shri in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2020 for his contributions in the field of education and philosophy.
IIS Sanjay Kumar Srivastava passes away
A senior officer of the Indian Information Service Sanjay Kumar Srivastava passed away following COVID-19 infection. He was 56
  • Mr Srivastava served in different departments of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting including the Press Information Bureau. In his tenure, he also worked in the Media Wing of the Vice President's office.
100 yr old freedom fighter Ashatai Pathre passes away
Ashatai Pathre, a freedom fighter from Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra passed away. She was one hundred years old.
  • She had participated in the Leave India movement started by Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 at Sangli and Pune.
Noted Gujarati poet and folk singer Dadudan Gadhvi passes away
Veteran Gujarati poet and folk singer Dadudan Pratapdan Gadhvi has passed away.He was 80 years old.Gadhvi was also known as Kavi Dad.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2021 for his contribution in literature and education.Besides, he had written songs for 15 Gujarati films.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work
World Day for Safety and Health at Work is observed on April 28 annually. The day has been observed worldwide since 2003.
  • It was an initiative by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to highlight the prevention of accidents and diseases at work and raise awareness of occupational safety and health.
  • The theme of this year’s World Day for Safety and Health at Work is ‘Anticipate, prepare and respond to crises and invest now in resilient OHS systems’.

Centre extends Rs 50 lakh insurance scheme for healthcare workers for one year
After an unprecedented spike in covid-19 positive cases, the Centre extended the Rs 50 lakh insurance scheme for about 22 lakh healthcare providers for another year with immediate effect.The scheme implemented by New India Assurance was slated to end on April 24.
  • The insurance provides a comprehensive personal accident cover of Rs 50 lakh to a total of around 22.12 lakh public healthcare providers, including community health workers, who may have to be in direct contact and care of patients suffering from coronavirus infection and who may be at risk of being impacted by this.
  • The scheme is funded through the National Disaster Response Fund, operated by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
ITBP sets up water sports and adventure training institute in Uttarakhand
The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has established a ‘Water Sports and Adventure Institute (WSAI)’ near Tehri Dam Reservoir in Uttarakhand.The institute was inaugurated by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat along with Union Minister of State for Sports Kiren Rijiju.
  • The Mountaineering and Skiing Institute of ITBP at Auli, will independently run this institution.
  • This institution will boost national and international tourism and increase opportunity of employment for the people of the state.
Indian Army signs MoU with HPCL & NIEDO for Ladakh Ignited Minds project
As part of the Indian Army’s initiative to secure a better future for Ladakhi youth, the Indian Army, under the aegis of Fire and Fury Corps, signed MoUs with corporate partner Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) and executing agency National Integrity and Educational Development Organisation, (NIEDO).
  • The project, Ladakh Ignited Minds: A Centre of Excellence and Wellness, has been conceptualized to secure a better future for the youth of UT of Ladakh. It is a full-time residential programme to mentor and to guide Ladakhi youth for twelve months for various Medical and Engineering Colleges entrance examinations in India.
  • The programme under the aegis of Fire and Fury Corps of the Indian Army would be executed by National Integrity & Educational Development Organisation (NIEDO), a Kanpur-based NGO.

Shivalik Bank commences operations as small finance bank
Shivalik Small Finance Bank Ltd. has commenced operations as a small finance bank with effect from April 26.
  • The Reserve Bank had issued a licence to the bank under Section 22 (1) of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 to carry on the business of small finance bank in India, the RBI said.
Bitex becomes first crypto exchange to provide investment disclosures
Cryptocurrency exchange Bitex has announced that it has started providing investment declaration reports for all its retail and institutional investors, becoming the first exchange in India to comply with the recent amendments made to the Companies Act 2013 by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
  • The report can be submitted for tax purposes by individual investors as well as by companies and can be used to prepare financial statements as stipulated by the government.
RBI issues guidelines for appointment of statutory auditors of banks, NBFCs
The Reserve Bank of India issued guidelines for appointment of statutory auditors of banks and non-banking finance companies (NBFCs), including housing finance companies.It will be applicable for financial year 2021-22 and onwards.
  • However, non-deposit taking NBFCs with asset size below Rs 1,000 crore have the option to continue with their extant procedure.
  • Banks and UCBs will be required to take prior approval of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for appointment/reappointment of SCAs/SAs, on an annual basis, the guidelines said.
  • For entities with an asset size of Rs 15,000 crore and above as at the end of previous year, statutory audit should be conducted under joint audit of a minimum of two audit firms. All other entities should appoint a minimum of one audit firm for conducting statutory audit.
'Britcoin' digital currency being considered by UK
British authorities are exploring the possibility of creating a new digital currency that Treasury chief Rishi Sunak indicated could be known as "Britcoin".
  • The Bank of England and the Treasury said that they will work together to assess the benefits of a central bank digital currency, at a time when cash payments are generally on the decline, partly as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The bank said the new currency, if it comes to pass, would be a new form of digital money for use by households and businesses and would exist alongside cash and bank deposits, rather than replacing them.

Oxford Economics lowers India's 2021 GDP growth forecast to 10.2%
Global forecasting firm Oxford Economics revised downwards its India GDP growth forecast for 2021 to 10.2 percent from 11.8 percent previously, citing the country's escalating health burden, faltering vaccination rate and lack of a convincing government strategy to contain the pandemic.
  • Oxford Economics also said that notwithstanding the likelihood of further mobility restrictions, it expects India's targeted lockdown approach, less stringent restrictions, and resilient consumer and business behaviour to mitigate the economic impact of the second wave.
India's GDP to grow at 11% this fiscal: ADB
The Indian economy is projected to grow at 11 per cent in the current financial year amid the "strong" vaccine drive, said ADB, while cautioning that the recent surge in COVID cases may put the country's economic recovery at "risk".
  • For FY2022, India's GDP is expected to expand at 7 per cent. 
  • However ,the Asian Development Bank (ADB) cautioned that the surge in COVID-19 cases may put the country's economic recovery at risk.
IIT Kharagpur and NCDC Sign MoU to promote Sustainable Developments in Cooperatives, Agriculture and Allied Sectors
IIT Kharagpur and the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) have signed an MoU towards greater collaboration in issues and areas related to the development of cooperatives, agriculture and allied sectors and to the holistic approach towards sustainable development.
  • The scope of the MoU will involve the advancement of training, action research, studies, policy analysis, policy advice, consultancy, monitoring, evaluation, system development and technology development.
Tata Steel & HSBC execute a blockchain-enabled, paperless trade transaction
Tata Steel, along with HSBC, has executed a blockchain-enabled paperless trade transaction. According to the company, this is a global first for the steel industry.
  • The live financial transaction involved the export of steel by Tata Steel to Universal Tube & Plastic Industries, UAE.
  • The end-to-end paperless transaction, executed over the Contour platform, was made possible by a unique collaboration pivoted by Tata Steel across the spectrum over the Contour and essDOCS platforms.

India bags record 11 medals at Youth World Boxing Championships

Armenia's prime minister has resigned, a step necessary to hold snap parliamentary elections in June.
  • Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the June 20 elections last month to try to resolve political tensions that arose after last year's defeat in a war with Azerbaijan.
  • He will continue to act as the the country's leader until the election.

Over 14,400 ha area in Andaman & Nicobar becomes first large territory to get organic certification
About 14,491 hectare (ha) area in Andaman and Nicobar has been certified as organic, the first large contiguous territory to be done under a government scheme, Agriculture Ministry said.
  • After Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Islands, Lakshadweep and Ladakh are proactively taking steps for the transformation of their traditional organic areas to certified organic.
  • There are traditional areas in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, north-eastern states and tribal belts of Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and desert districts of Rajasthan which can be transformed to certified organic.
Thilakan memorial award for director Pramod Payyannnur 
Theatre and film director Pramod Payyannur bagged the Thilakan memorial award named after the veteran actor for overall contribution in the creative field. The award is constituted by Thilakan Smarakavedi.

The election-fraud film Absolute Proof, singer Sia’s heavily panned directorial debut Music and Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor, were the top winners at the 2021 Razzie Awards, given to the worst movies and performances of the year.
  • The Golden Raspberry Awards, popularly known as the Razzies, were held a day before the Oscars night, as is the tradition.

China's first Mars rover named 'Zhurong'
China’s first Mars rover will be named Zhurong after a traditional fire god, the government announced.
  • The rover is aboard the Tianwen-1 probe that arrived in Mars orbit on February 24 and is due to land in May to look for evidence of life.
  • It is part of Chinese space plans that include launching a crewed orbital station and landing a human on the moon.

Ex-chief of SSB Arun Chaudhary passes away 
Former Sahasthra Seema Bal chief Arun Chaudhary died of Covid. He was 66.
  • A 1977-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Bihar cadre, Chaudhary served for nearly two decades in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) where he headed the Jammu and Kashmir desk.
  • In his early service days, he served in various positions in his cadre state and also had a stint with the Central Industrial Security Force, where he headed its airport security unit.

Haryana launches 'Covid Emergency Loan Scheme'
To ensure uninterrupted flow of vital medical supplies to fight the Covid-19 pandemic in the State, Haryana Government announced “Haryana Covid Emergency Loan Scheme” for new and old entrepreneurs supplying medicines, oxygen and other medical facilities to Covid-19 patients.
  • For this, the State Government has set up a fund of Rs 500 crore.
  • Under the scheme, Haryana Government will help businessmen, presently working in the state, to increase their current production or to set up new units to meet various requirements to tackle Covid-19 pandemic.
Haryana to provide jobs to abandoned, surrendered children under HARIHAR scheme
The Haryana cabinet approved a policy to provide jobs on compassionate grounds and economically weaker section (EWS) status to children either abandoned or surrendered and turned 18-year-old while living in child-care institutions across state.
  • The children abandoned when below 5 years of age and surrendered before turning one-year-old will be eligible for benefits of HARIHAR initiative of the Haryana government. Under the policy, eligible children will get benefits of education, employment, and financial support.
  • The policy provides for free schooling, higher education, technical education, skill development and industrial training, apart from financial assistance up to the age of 25 years or marriage, whichever is earlier, and one-time interest-free loan for buying a house in Haryana.

India builds infrastructures for three educational institutions in Nepal's Palpa
India has built infrastructures three educational institutions in Nepal's Palpa district and handed it over in the last two days, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu announced.
  • Newly constructed buildings of Shree Rambha Higher Secondary School, Shree Laxmi Higher Secondary School and Shree Nava Adarsha Multiple Campus respectively, built with Government of India's financial assistance of NRs. 98.37 Million, were virtually inaugurated by Shri Karun Bansal, First Secretary (DP&R) of the Embassy of India, Kathmandu, District Coordination Committee, Palpa and School Management Committee and local representatives.
Russia plans its own space station in 2025
Russia’s space agency said it hoped to launch its own orbital station in 2025 as Moscow considers withdrawing from the International Space Station programme to go it alone and build and manage its own floating laboratory that will be launched into orbit by 2030.
  • The project would mark a new chapter for Russian space exploration and an end to more than two decades of close cooperation with the United States aboard the ageing International Space Station (ISS).
India’s demographic advantage to overtake China’s by 2035, says China’s central bank report
China’s demographic transition owing particularly to its stricter birth policies has grappled it with the problem of ageing population and dwindling work-force. A report released by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC), China’s central bank, said that China should immediately liberalise its birth policies to tackle the problems of an ageing population and plan to compete economically with a demographically young India and an immigration-friendly US.
  • In a detailed section on India, the report said the gap between the two countries is narrowing. As two big countries in Asia, China’s economic growth has been faster than India’s for a long time but in recent years, China’s demographic dividend fading, India’s economic growth has tended to approach China’s, the report said.
  • In a rare frank assessment, it added that China’s ageing population and the declining birth rate will become more serious in 10 years while India’s demographic structure will be further optimised.
Arvind Kejriwal to represent Delhi, India at World Cities Cultural Forum
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will be representing Delhi and India at the World Cities Cultural Forum (WCCF), according to a statement issued by the city government.
  • He has been invited by Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, to participate in the forum that comprises 40 world cities, including London, Tokyo and New York, that recognise the impact and importance of culture and creativity, and seek to inculcate these values in public policy and city planning.
WHO unveils global immunization strategy to save 50 million lives by 2030
A UN-led global immunization strategy was unveiled to reach more than 50 million children who have missed lifesaving jabs against measles and other diseases because of COVID-19 disruption.
  • WHO, along with UNICEF and the vaccine alliance Gavi, said their new global strategy has the potential to save 50 million lives within less than a decade.
  • A WHO survey showed more than one third of countries were still seeing disruptions to their routine immunisation services. The joint statement said, around 60 mass vaccination campaigns were currently postponed in 50 countries, putting 228 million people, mostly children, at risk of diseases such as measles and polio.

RBI Imposes Ceiling of 70 Years for MD, CEO of Private Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) fixed the tenure of MD, CEO and whole-time director (WTD) in a private sector bank at 15 years and prescribed the maximum age of 70 years for such functionaries.
  • These directives form part of the instructions issued by the RBI with regard to the chair and meetings of the board, composition of certain committees of the board, age, tenure and remuneration of directors, and appointment of the WTDs.
  • The maximum age limit for chairman and non-executive directors has been fixed at 75 years.The RBI directives also stipulate that the fixed remuneration for an NED, other than the chair of the board, shall not exceed Rs 20 lakh per annum.
  • The total tenure of an NED, continuously or otherwise, on the board of a bank, shall not exceed eight years. After completing eight years on the board, the person may be considered for re-appointment only after a minimum gap of three years.
NDB issues USD 1.5 billion benchmark bond 
The New Development Bank (NDB) priced its 5-year USD 1.5 billion benchmark bond. This transaction is the third USD benchmark bond offering of the Bank in the international markets.
  • The net proceeds of the Bond will be used for financing sustainable development activities as well as COVID-19 Emergency Program Loans to the Bank's member countries.
  • This transaction was met with significant support from the global investor community.
Aceware launches first neobank in Kerala
Aceware FinTech Services, a fintech services company based out of Kerala, launched the state's first neobank, Ace Money Neobank, in partnership with Yes Bank and ICICI Bank.

AP inks MoU with Microsoft to skill over 1.6L 
In a major initiative, the state government has roped in Microsoft to take up skill development training for college students and unemployed youth in Andhra Pradesh .
  • Microsoft has agreed to provide training to about 1.62 lakh students in the coming one year.
  • This is considered to be the biggest and first-of-its-kind initiative by a state government to cover its entire cohort of young graduates. The move is aimed at accelerating digital skilling of youth to enable their employability in the industry.
World Trade Center Faridabad signs MoU with HSIIDC to promote trade and investment in Haryana

A son of the assassinated leader of Chad Idriss Deby Itno is to succeed the presidency in place of his father, according to a charter published by the presidency.
  • The charter says that General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, 37, who was appointed head of the transition to the head of a military council following the death of his father, “will serve as president of the republic “and will also serve as the head of the armed forces.
Govt Appoints Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth on RBI Board
The Reserve Bank said the government has appointed Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth on the central bank's board. 
  • Seth replaces Tarun Bajaj, who was appointed as Revenue Secretary earlier this month.
  • The nomination of Seth is effective from April 24, 2021, and until further orders, it said. In addition to the Economic Affairs Secretary, the other government nominee director on the central board is Financial Services Secretary Debasish Panda.

National-award winning editor Waman Bhonsle passed away at his residence in Mumbai due to age-related issues. He was 87.
  • In his four-decade-long career, he worked with several noted filmmakers including Subhash Ghai, Shekar Kapur, Mahesh Bhatt, Gulzaar, Raj Sippy, Anil Ganguly, Sunil Dutt, others.

Chandigarh drafts cycling policy, maps out cycling network, incentives
Chandigarh state government has released first-of-its-kind draft cycling policy that views cycling as a major alternate mode of transport for short distances.
  • It is for the first time that a city has drafted a cycling policy in India. The policy has been drafted by the Chandigarh Smart City Limited.
  • The cycling policy is seen as a powerful tool for the government to encourage cycling in the city.
  • About 60-km of cycle network has been identified with proposed cycle underpasses across V-2 or V-3 roads. In addition, the existing cycle tracks along V3 roads should be improved and provided with proper integration, along with the zebra crossing near intersection.

Saudi Arabia to join ‘Net Zero Producers Forum’ on climate change

Indian Bank in pact with Chennai Angels for start-up financing
Indian Bank has signed an agreement with The Chennai Angles for financing start-ups under its loan programme, ‘IND Spring Board.
  • Under this product, the bank will support start-ups by extending credit facilities of up to ₹50 crore for working capital requirements and also fund term loan requirements for acquiring fixed assets for their unit.
RBI cancels licence of Maharashtra-based Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it has cancelled the licence of Maharashtra-based Bhagyodaya Friends Urban Co-operative Bank Limited due to inadequate capital.
  • The Commissioner for Cooperation and Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Maharashtra has also been requested to issue an order for winding up the bank and appoint a liquidator for the bank.

ISRO to Launch Data Relay Satellite to Track Gaganyaan
The Indian Space Research Organisation will launch a data relay satellite that will help maintain contact with the Gagangyaan mission throughout after the launch.
  • The satellite will be launched before the final leg of the Gaganyaan mission, which will send astronauts to the Lower Earth Orbit (LEO). The first leg — the unmanned mission — is to be launched in December.
  • A data relay satellite serves as a way to pass along the satellite’s information. Its Tracking and Data Relay Satellite allows it to have global coverage of all the satellites round the clock without having to build extra ground stations on Earth.

Classical Vocalist Pt Rajan Mishra passes away
Classical singer Rajan Mishra, a Padma Bhushan awardee, died of complications caused by COVID-19 at a hospital. He was 70.
  • Belonging to the Benaras gharana, Mr. Mishra, along with brother Sajan Mishra, made a mark for himself as a vocalist in the khyal style of Indian classical singing.
  • They released over 20 music albums.They received prestigious honours such as the Padma Bhushan, Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Tansen Samman, Kashi Gaurav, Gandharva National Award, and Honorary Citizenship of Baltimore in the US.
Nuclear scientist Krishnamurthy Santhanam passes away
Indian nuclear scientist Krishnamurthy Santhanam, who played noteworthy role in 1998 nuclear tests at Pokhran, has passed away.
  • Santhanam was the field director of Defence Research and Development Organization during the tests of Pokhran-II.He was deeply associated with Defence Research and Development Organization(DRDO), Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) and Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA).
  • He was awarded with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1999 by the Government of India.
