Centre to Invest Rs 64,000 Crore in Health Sector: Mansukh Mandaviya
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said about Rs 64,000 crore will be invested by the Centre in creating health infrastructure in the country over the next five years.
  • The union health and family said that the central government is working to provide health security to all through various health welfare schemes.
Addl Rs 10k crore allocated for MNREGA as interim measure
The Finance Ministry has allocated additional funds of ₹10,000 crore as an interim measure for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme after it ran out of funds allocated in the budget, according to the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD).
  • Further, allocation may be made upon assessment of demand during the Revised Estimate stage, said the rural development ministry — the nodal ministry for the implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
  • In the Union Budget presented earlier this year, the government allocated Rs 73,000 crore to the scheme for the financial year 2021-22.
Government constitutes 5-member panel to monitor Central Vista project
The Centre has constituted a Central Vista Oversight Committee to directly oversee the Rs 20,000 crore project for a period of two years, informed an official statement issued by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
  • Former finance secretary Ratan P Watal has been appointed the chairman of the panel, which will submit its reports or recommendations to the Housing and Urban Affairs ministry.
  • PK Tiwari, former Deputy CAG, Shailendra Roy, former Director L&T, Prof Mausam, IIT, Delhi has been appointed as the member of the committee, Joint Secretary, MoHUA will be Convenor of the committee.
Bihar, Jharkhand, UP among poorest states; Kerala, Goa have lowest poverty: Niti Aayog
A quarter of India’s population is still poor, according to the first National Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) released by the NITI Aayog, but the situation has improved since then, officials said.
  • Bihar has the highest proportion of people who are poor (51.91%), followed by Jharkhand (42.16%), Uttar Pradesh (37.79%) and Madhya Pradesh (36.65%), the index showed.
  • Kerala, Goa, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and Punjab have registered the lowest poverty rate among all states and are at the bottom of the index.
  • The national MPI 2021 has been developed by NITI Aayog in consultation with 12 ministries and in partnership with state governments and index publishing agencies – Oxford University’s Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, and United Nations Development Programme.
Kerala Tourism launches STREET project for experiential tourism
In  a pioneering initiative to take tourism deep into the state's interiors and rural hinterland, Kerala Tourism launched the 'STREET' project in select spots in seven districts, which would help visitors experience the diversity of offerings in these locales.
  • The project, conceived by the Responsible Tourism Mission, is inspired by the 'Tourism for Inclusive Growth' slogan of The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO),
  • The STREET is an acronym for Sustainable, Tangible, Responsible, Experiential, Ethnic, Tourism hubs. Green street, cultural street, village life experience street, experiential tourism street, agri-tourism street, water street and art street are the themes that have been planned as part of the project.
State-level scheme sanctioning committee approves drinking water supply schemes worth Rs 225.24 Crore for Uttarakhand
State-level scheme sanctioning committee (SLSSC) approved drinking water supply schemes worth Rs 225.24 Crore for Uttarakhand.
  • These schemes will provide tap water connections in 293 villages spread over 7 districts of the State. Of the 12 water supply schemes sanctioned, 11 are multi-village and one is a single village scheme.
  • This year, Jal Shakti Ministry has allocated Rs. 1,443.80 Crore to Uttarakhand, for ensuring clean tap water in every household and freeing women and girls from drudgery of fetching water from a distance.
MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan launches ‘Kranti Surya Gaurav Kalash Yatra
In Madhya Pradesh, the ‘Kranti Surya Gaurav Kalash Yatra’ is being launched from the birthplace of freedom fighter Jannayak Tantya Mama, Barod Ahir village of tahsil Pandhana in Khandwa district.
  • Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has called upon the citizens to participate in this yatra and pay obeisance to Tantya Mama.
  • The holy soil of Tantya Mama’a birthplace will be filled in the Kalash and worshipped. This Kalash will then pass through various tribal areas of Malwa and Nimar region.
7th IISF 2021 to be held in Panaji from 10-13 of Dec
The 7th India International Science Festival (IISF) 2021 will be held in Panaji, Goa from 10th to 13th of December.
  • The 4 days festival will be organized by the Ministry of Earth Sciences in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Department of Atomic Energy, the Department of Space and the Government of Goa.
  • More than 100 scientists from different fields will participate and 740 science films from 70 countries will be screened. The festival theme will be based on Aazadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav with the motto of Celebration of science and its promotion by all.
First of its kind program for lateral entry for women researchers in joint R&D projects between India and Germany launched
Indo-German Science and Technology Centre, IGSTC has launched a first-of-its-kind programme called Women’s Involvement in Science and Engineering Research, WISER.
  • The programme aims at promoting women in the field of research and development through lateral entry and encouraging their involvement at various joint research projects.
  • This programme will be in addition to the ongoing flagship 22 programme of the centre. This programme by IGSTC, a joint initiative of the DST and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, Government of Germany, will support women scientists holding regular and long-term research positions in academia or research institutes and industry.

Exim Bank commits $100 million loan for Covid vaccines in FY 22
Export-Import Bank of India (Exim Bank) has committed loans worth $100 million for domestic manufacturers of Covid-19 vaccines or related products.
  • These loans are being extended to about half a dozen drug makers in the country during the present financial year. The loans for vaccines are also being extended to other countries.
  • This will be an advantage for Indian firms as the financing mandates Africa to source vaccines and related products only from India.
RBI Imposes Rs 1 Crore Penalty On State Bank Of India
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore on State Bank of lndia (SBI) for contravention of provision of sub section (2) of Section 19 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.
  • This penalty has been imposed in exercise of powers vested in RBI under the provisions of section 47 A (1) (c) read with sections 46 (a) (i) and 51 (1) of the Act.
RBI raises higher cap on promoter stake in pvt banks at 26% after 15 yrs
An internal working group of the Reserve Bank on the ownership and corporate structure of private sector banks has favoured allowing promoters to maintain any percentage of holding in the first five years-- more than the present minimum of 40 per cent now favoured -- and then capping it at 26 per cent after 15 years of operations.
  • According to the RBI's current norms, a promoter of a private bank needs to pare holdings to 20 per cent within 10 years, and to 15 per cent within 15 years.
  • Releasing the report on the ownership guidelines and corporate structure for private sector banks, the Reserve Bank explained the cap on promoters' stake in the long run of 15 years may be raised from the current levels of 15 per cent to 26 per cent of the paid-up voting equity share capital of the bank.

  • Three oil PSU’s have joined hands to launch Model Retail Outlets to enhance service standards and amenities, across their networks, which serve over 6 Crores consumers everyday.
  • The scheme involves an intense 5 Level evaluation process of over 70000 retail outlets in the country on a set of core service and facility parameters as well as standard of customer amenities e.g., clean and hygienic washrooms, customer centric innovative offerings etc.
  • The Retail Outlets have been divided into 4 categories based on sales performance, facilities offered and their percentage of digital transactions at the point of sale in keeping with the Digital India imperative.
Guwahati to get centre of excellence to deal with cyber security
A strategic cyber intelligence centre of excellence (CoE) will be set up in Assam's largest city Guwahati soon.
  • A tripartite agreement for establishing the centre was signed between Assam Electronics Development Corporation Limited (AMTRON), Mastercard Asia/Pacific Pvt Ltd, and I-Sec Security Services Pvt Ltd. 
  • The Cyber COE is envisaged to provide intelligence services to the Government of India, state governments, Public Sector Undertakings, and corporates within the country against the growing and rapidly evolving cybersecurity threat landscape.

Senior Women's National Football Championship kicks off in Kerala 
The senior women's national football championship is all set to kick off from November 28 in four venues across Kerala.The championship will conclude on December 9.
  • The matches will be held in four venues -- Municipal Stadium, Kuthuparamba, EMS Corporation Stadium, Kozhikode, Calicut University, Kozhikode and Calicut Medical College Kozhikode.
  • There are 32 teams that have been divided into eight groups, with the teams in each group set to play against each other for the qualifying stage. The winners of qualifying matches will play the semi-finals, with the two winners from the last four proceeding to the final.
Parmjeet Kumar Wins Bronze in World Para-Powerlifting Championships
Parmjeet Kumar became the first Indian para-powerlifter to win a medal in World Championships as he claimed a bronze at the ongoing edition in Tbilisi, Georgia.
  • Kumar, who trains at Sports Authority of India Centre in Gandhinagar, won the bronze in men’s 49kg category with an effort of 158kg.
Ramkumar Ramanathan Wins Maiden Singles Title on ATP Challenger Tour in Manama
Indian tennis player Ramkumar Ramanathan won his maiden Challenger level singles title, 12 years after turning a Pro, when he outplayed Evgeny Karlovskiy in the summit clash of the ATP80 Manama event.
  • The 27-year-old Ramkumar, who had lost six Challenger finals in his career before, beat his Russian rival 6-1 6-4 in 68 minutes.
  • Ramkumar, seeded sixth and ranked 222 in the world, sealed the first set when the Russian’s backhand return sailed over the baseline.

Ace mountaineer Harshwanti Bisht elected as first woman president of Indian Mountaineering Foundation
Noted mountaineer from Uttarakhand Harshwanti Bisht has earned the distinction of being elected the first woman president of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF).
  • She was elected to the coveted post on November 20, winning 60 out of a total of 107 votes.
  •  It is for the first time that a woman has been elected as the president of the IMF, which was founded in the year 1958.
Petr Fiala appointed as PM of Czech Republic
Czech President Milos Zeman appointed the leader of a centre-right alliance Petr Fiala as prime minister in a ceremony he performed from a plexiglass cubicle after testing positive for COVID-19.
  • Fiala, 57, heads the three-party coalition Together (Civic Democratic Party, Christian Democrats, TOP 09 party), which garnered 27.8% of the vote in early October. Fiala succeeds Andrej Babis.
  • The alliance narrowly defeated the ANO movement led by billionaire Babis. The centrist group of the Mayors and Independents and the left-wing Pirate Party joined with Fiala’s coalition to remove Babis, who had served as prime minister since 2017.

In a first, Meghalaya uses drone to deliver medicines
In a first, a drone developed by a Gurugram-based company was put to service to carry lifesaving drugs to a remote part of the state. The successful delivery has inspired the government and the founders of the startup to explore other areas where drone delivery could be put to use.
  • TechEagle, the Gurugram-based company, partnered the Meghalaya government and Smart Village Movement (SVM) to carry out India's first hybrid e-VTOL drone delivery of lifesaving drugs.
  • The collaboration is aimed to transform the healthcare supply chain for people living in remote areas.

Veteran songwriter Stephen Sondheim, who redefined the American musical theatre, has passed away. He was 91.
  • From the comedic 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' to the ground-breaking 'Company' and the experimental 'Pacific Overtures', his shows have had undoubtedly transformed the Broadway musical stage.
  • He's a recipient of Tony Awards plus a 2008 Special Tony Award for lifetime achievement in the theatre. He also received a Pulitzer Prize ('Sunday in the Park'), and an Academy Award for the song 'Sooner or Later'.

India third country in organ donation and transplantation: Report
India now ranks third in the world in organ donation and transplantation as the total number of organ transplants done per year in the country has increased to 12,746 in the year 2019, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) Mansukh Mandaviya said.
  • Mandaviya was citing a report by Global Observatory on Donation and Transplantation (GODT).
  • The total number of organ transplants done per year in the country has increased from 4,990 in the year 2013 to 12,746 in the year 2019 and India now ranks third in the world only behind USA and China.
  • Similarly, the organ donation rate has increased to about four times as compared to 2012-13. However, still facing a huge gap between the number of patients requiring transplantation and the number of people who consent to donate their organs after death. Further, the organ donation and transplantation activities have been negatively impacted due to Covid-19 pandemic which we hope to leave behind soon.
Madhya Pradesh to become 1st Indian State to create cyber tehsils: Narottam Mishra
Madhya Pradesh Cabinet approved the proposal to create cyber tehsils, informed Home Minister Narottam Mishra, adding that the state will be the first across the country to do so.
  • He also said that Cyber Tehsil will make the mutation process easy and people from anywhere in the state can avail of its benefit.
  • With the introduction of this system, the process of conversion will become convenient in the cases of undisputed land.

India has made no progress on anaemia, childhood wasting: Global Nutrition Report
India has made no progress on anaemia and childhood wasting according to the 2021 Global Nutrition Report (GNR, 2021) released recently.
  • The country featured among the 161 countries documented in the report as having made no progress or said to be worsening with regards to reducing anaemia.
  • Over half of Indian women in the age group 15-49 years are anaemic, according to the report.
  • There has been a rise in anaemic Indian women since 2016. In 2016, 52.6 per cent of Indian women were anaemic. But in 2020, 53 per cent were found to be anaemic.Over 17 per cent of Indian children under 5 years of age are affected. This figure is much higher than the average for Asia where close to 9 per cent children are affected.

MakeMyTrip to partner with civil aviation ministry to promote regional air connectivity
Online travel services firm MakeMyTrip said it will partner with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to promote regional air connectivity through the UDAN scheme.
  • As the UDAN scheme completes four years of connecting major cities with regional hubs, MakeMyTrip will now power UDAN flights on the AirSewa portal and market them on its platform to promote its visibility and product discovery to provide air connectivity to underserved destinations.

India’s candidate Praveen Sinha elected to INTERPOL executive committee
India’s candidate, Praveen Sinha, Special Director of Central Bureau of Investigation was elected as Delegate for Asia on the Executive Committee of the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL).
  • Sources said this was a tough election, with India running against four other contestants for two posts. The four contestants were China, Singapore, South Korea and Jordan.
  • The elections were held in Istanbul, Turkey during the ongoing 89th INTERPOL General Assembly.

Skyroot test fires India's first privately built cryogenic rocket engine
Skyroot Aerospace, a Hyderabad-based space technology startup, has test fired India’s first privately developed fully cryogenic rocket engine, successfully demonstrating the technology that will power the upper stages of its upcoming Vikram-2 orbital launch vehicle.
  • The rocket engine, named Dhawan-1 in honour of Indian rocket scientist Satish Dhawan, has been developed using 3D printing technology and is fuelled by liquefied natural gas and liquid oxygen—a high-performance, low-cost and clean rocket fuel.
  • This is a completely ‘Made-in-India' cryogenic engine developed using 3D printing with a superalloy, reducing manufacturing time by more than 95%.

IIT Delhi hosts fifth World Congress on Disaster Management
The fifth World Congress on Disaster Management on the overarching theme of “Technology, Finance and Capacity for Building Resilience to Disasters in the Contexts of Covid-19” was organised the IIT Delhi campus.
  • Union defence minister, Rajnath Singh, virtually inaugurated the WCDM 2021 where he called for closer global cooperation to strengthen international architecture for building structures to prevent and manage future disasters.
  • The World Congress on Disaster Management is an initiative of Disaster Management Initiatives and Convergence Society (DMICS) to bring researchers, policy makers and practitioners from around the world on the same platform to discuss various challenging issues of disaster risk management.
Govt inks agreement with UNICEF for water mgmt
As a 5T initiative, the Department of Water Resources and the UNICEF signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) in a ceremony presided over by department Principal Secretary Anu Garg for collaboration on communication and policy initiatives of the department.
  • This endeavour aims engaging with the community on sustainable water management, prudent water use, equity in water distribution, water conservation, women as principal stakeholders in water governance, participatory irrigation management, etc.
  • For the first time since its inception, is unleashing its soft power through greater community engagement in matters of water governance, water conservation and keeping water clean.
Railways to launch about 190 theme-based Bharat Gaurav trains showcasing India's heritage, culture
After freight and passenger segments, the railways is set to begin a third segment dedicated to the tourism sector and launch a set of around 190 theme-based trains called Bharat Gaurav trains, minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
  • The railways minister said these trains could be run both by the private sector as well as the IRCTC.
  • He also said the fare of these trains would be practically decided by tour operators but the railways will ensure that there is no abnormality in the prices.
Government releases new series of Wage Rate Index
Ministry of labour released a new series of Wage Rate Index (WRI) with base year 2016, being compiled and maintained by the Labour Bureau, an attached office of the ministry. The new series of WRI with base 2016=100 will replace the old series with base 1963-65, a labour ministry statement said.
  • The government periodically revises the base year for major economic indicators to reflect the changes in the economy and to capture the wage pattern of workers, it said. Base year revision will enhance the coverage and make index more representative.
  • A total of 37 industries have been covered in the new WRI basket (2016=100) as against 21 industries in the 1963-65=100 series.
  • The New WRI Series with base 2016=100 would be compiled twice a year on a point-to-point half-yearly basis, as on 1st January and 1st July of every year.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

India among top 6 destinations in Asia attracting investments in seed sector
India is among the six countries countries in South and South-East Asia that attracts most investments in the domestic seed sector from the global seed industry.
  • Apart from India, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Bangladesh attract investments in breeding, production and processing.
  • Twenty eight seed companies report investments in seed production in 10 countries in the region, where company activities are usually minimal. Access to Seeds has said in its latest index, launched as part of World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA), said.

Collins Dictionary announced that its Word of the Year is “NFT” — digital assets that exploded in popularity this year along with the rise of cryptocurrencies.
  • The term, which stands for the acronym for “non-fungible token,” has seen a “meteoric” rise in usage this year, up 11,000 percent from the prior year, Collins said.

Union Bank of India, Capri Global Capital partner under co-lending terms
Union Bank of India has entered into a co-lending partnership with Capri Global Capital, under which they will disburse loans to MSMEs.
  • The co-lending agreement aims to enhance last-mile finance and drive financial inclusion to MSMEs by offering secured loans between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 1 crore, the public sector lender said.
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance partners with TropoGo for drone insurance
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance announced its partnership with deep-tech startup TropoGo for the distribution of a drone Insurance product.
  • The drone insurance product will cover damage to the Drone and Payload it carries, Third Party Liability along with additional covers for BVLOS (Beyond Visual Line of Sight) Endorsement and Night Flying Endorsement.
  • Drone owners and drone manufacturing companies can avail an annual third-party and comprehensive coverage for accidental damage, theft, and disappearance, it said, adding that users can opt for additional endorsements for night flying, BVLOS, payload and data loss liability.
BoB Financial partners with OneCard to launch mobile-first, metal credit card
BOB Financial Solutions Ltd (BFSL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Bank of Baroda (BoB), has partnered with OneCard, to launch a co-branded mobile-first credit card.
  • The virtual credit card, powered by a mobile app, will be delivered in under three minutes and the metal card will be delivered in three to five days, BFSL and OneCard said in a joint statement.
  • The internationally valid credit card will be issued by BFSL and managed by OneCard on VISA’s Signature platform.
  • OneCard has been launched by FPL Technologies, a fintech start-up. It allows users to control all aspects of the card, including locking the card, enabling offline and online tractions, enabling domestic and international transactions, and paying the bill from an app.

India's GDP growth to rebound strongly, FY22 growth seen at 9.3%: Moody's
In its latest note, Moody's Investors Services said that India's economic growth is seen to rebound strongly in the next fiscal year. Moody's forecasts the country's GDP at 9.3% in 2022. 
  • While the rating agency predicts a GDP of 7.9% by the end of March of the fiscal year 2023.
  • Moody's highlighted that consumer demand, spending and manufacturing activity is recovering following the easing of pandemic restrictions. These trends, including high commodity prices, will propel significant growth in rated companies’ EBITDA over the next 12-18 months.

SWADESH, World’s First Multimodal Brain Imaging Data and Analytics, Developed at DBT-National Brain Research Centre, Haryana
The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Science and Technology, Dr Jitendra Singh inaugurated Project SWADESH. The project SWADESH is a first of its kind large-scale multimodal neuroimaging database designed specifically for the Indian population.
  • The unique brain initiative has been developed by the DBT-National Brain Research Centre (DBT-NBRC), Gurgaon, Haryana.
  • SWADESH brings big-data architecture and analytics for various neurological diseases under one platform.
  • It will enable the researchers in conducting multimodal brain studies to understand and manage Alzheimer’s disease and several neurological disorders.
Shiyan-11: China successfully launches a new testing satellite
The Shiyan-11 satellite was launched aboard a Kuaizhou-1A carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the Gobi Desert in Inner Mongolia.
  • Shiyan-11 is built for testing, but the purpose of the satellite's latest mission has not yet been revealed. Another series of Chinese satellites called Shijian is used for technology verification.
  • Kuaizhou-1A, a general-purpose, small-sized rocket series featuring fast deployment speed, is designed and manufactured by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation for commercial launches.

The President of India, Ram Nath Kovind visited Sui village in the Bhiwani district of Haryana, to inaugurate various public facilities in the village.
  • This village is being developed as Adarsh Gram (Model village) by Mahadevi Parameshwaridas Jindal Charitable Trust under the Swa-Prerit Adarsh Gram Yojana (SPAGY) scheme of the Haryana Government.
  • The Jindal trust has undertaken developmental works of over Rs 25 crore to transform Sui into an ADARSH VILLAGE.
  • It must be noted that Bhiwani is the first district in India where two Presidents have visited. Prior to this President APJ Abdul Kalam visited Bhiwani in 2007.
Andhra Pradesh Named Best Marine State, Telangana Top Performer In Inland Fisheries
Telangana was adjudged best performer in inland fisheries, while Andhra Pradesh was named the best marine state in the country by the Centre.
  • Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala announced the awards at a programme to celebrate World Fisheries Day in Bhubaneswar.
  • Balasore in Odisha was named the best marine district, and Balaghat in Madhya Pradesh received the award for the best district in inland fisheries.
  • The award for the best hilly and Northeastern state in the sector was given to Tripura. Bongaigaon in Assam received the award in this category for being the best district.
  • Rupala said that the Centre has set a target of achieving Rs 1 lakh crore export from the sector by 2024-25.

  • The museum will be constructed under the funding of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs with an estimated cost of 15 crore rupees.
Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurates Centres for nano technology and Indian Knowledge System at IIT Guwahati
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated the state-of-the-art Centre for Nanotechnology (CNT) and Centre for Indian Knowledge System (CIKS) at IIT Guwahati. He also released a book on NEP 2020 implementation.
  • The CNT aims at meeting future challenges and augmenting academic partnerships with industries in the field of nanotechnology.The CNT will host 25 laboratories that will focus on advancements in multi-disciplinary and scientific research.
  • The majority of funding for the centre, which included Rs 37 crore for constructing the building, apart from equipment, was received from the Union Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
India Has More Women Than Men for the First Time, NFHS Survey Finds
Indicating a demographic shift, the number of women surpassed men for the first time in India with the sex ratio being 1,020: 1,000, according to findings of the National Family and Health Survey-5.
  • With this, we can say India moves in the league of the developed countries - as the sex ratio crosses 1000," a health ministry official said, attributing it to measures taken for women empowerment such as financial inclusion and for combating gender bias and disparities.
  • The sex ratio at birth also improved from 919 in 2015-16 to 929 in 2019-20, indicating the positive impact of measures like implementation of the PC and PNDT Act and various other interventions. According to NFHS-3, conducted in 2005-06, the sex ratio was 1000: 1000 and in 2015-16 (NHFS-4), it declined to 991:1000.

The 13th edition of the ASEM (Asia-Europe Meeting) Summit held in a virtual platform, which was hosted by Cambodia as ASEM The Indian delegation is being led by Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu through the virtual platform.
  • The theme of the two-day ASEM Summit is Strengthening Multilateralism for Shared Growth. The 2021 summit marks the 25th anniversary of the ASEM process.
  • The ASEM Summit will bring together countries in Asia and Europe to exchange views on regional and global issues and strengthen cooperation in a wide range of areas.
El Salvador plans to build world's first Bitcoin City
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele has announced that the country is planning to build the world's first “Bitcoin City”.
  • The new city is planned to be developed in the eastern region of La Union and will be initially funded by bitcoin-backed bonds. It would get geothermal power from a volcano.
  • Bitcoin City will not levy any taxes except for value-added tax (VAT). One half of this VAT levied will be used to fund the bonds issued to build the city and the next half would be used to pay for services such as garbage collection.

Asian Development Bank Approves USD 1.5 Billion Loan to India for Purchasing Covid-19 Vaccines
The Asian Development Bank has approved a USD 1.5 billion (around Rs 11,185 crore) loan to India for COVID-19 vaccine procurement.
  • The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is expected to co-finance an additional USD 500 million for the project.
NPCI Bharat BillPay ties up with Tata Power
NPCI Bharat BillPay - the wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) announced its integration with Tata Power, the country's largest integrated power utility on ClickPay - making it the first power company to go live on the newly launched platform.
  • Bharat BillPay's marquee offering - ClickPay will enable Tata Power customers to make monthly electricity bill payments with ease.
  • Tata Power will generate the ClickPay link and share it with customers which will redirect them to the payment page comprising payment details.

UBS revises India's GDP growth forecast to 9.5% from 8.9% for FY22
Citing faster-than-expected recovery, rising consumer confidence and the resultant spending spike, Swiss brokerage UBS Securities has revised upwards its growth forecast for the current fiscal to 9.5 per cent from 8.9 per cent in September.
  • The brokerage also sees the economy clipping at 7.7 per cent in FY23 but moderating to 6 per cent in FY24, as it expects the benefit of the low-interest rate regime to end by the end of FY23, and it sees the central bank hiking policy rates by 50 bps in the second half of the next fiscal.
Govt targets to increase country's marine exports to Rs 1 lakh crore by 2024-25 : MoS L Murugan
Minister of State for Fisheries and Information & Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan said that the government has targetted to increase marine exports from the  country to one lakh crore rupees by 2024-25 fiscal. 
  • The Minister said five fishing harbors in the country including Kochi, Chennai,Vishakhapatanam and Paradip will be modernised to international levels, which will help boost exports. Ice plants and processing units will be set up at the fishing harbours as part of the modernisation programme.
  • He said the detailed project report of the seaweed processing facility at a special economic zone in Tamil Nadu is getting ready. The facility will help to generate employment for fisherwomen and would lead to their economic empowerment.

  • Muguruza, who won back-to-back titles in Monterrey in northern Mexico in 2018 and 2019, became the first Spaniard to win the women´s season-ending tournament.

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope has said there was hesitancy about taking anti-coronavirus vaccines in Muslim-dominated areas, and the government will take the help of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan to convince people to take the jab.
  • Over 10.25 crore vaccine doses have been administered in the state so far, and by the end of November all eligible persons will have received at least the first dose, the minister said.

Prominent Minnesota Poet, Writer Robert Bly passes away
Robert Bly, one of the most prominent American poets of the last half century and author of the best-selling men’s movement classic “Iron John,” has died. He was 94.
  • Bly, an active poet, writer and editor for more than 50 years, has won the National Book Award in 1968 for “The Light Around the Body,” a book of Vietnam War protest poems. Bly donated the $1,000 prize money to the draft resistance movement.

Govt approves continuation of National Apprenticeship Training Scheme for next 5-years
Union Cabinet has approved continuation of National Apprenticeship Training Scheme for next five years.
  • The cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi accorded its approval for stipendiary support of three thousand 54 crore rupees to apprentices who undergo apprenticeship training under National Apprenticeship Training Scheme for the period from 2021-22 to 2025-26. Approximately nine lakhs apprentices will be trained by industry and commercial organisations.
  • The apprentices who have completed graduate and diploma programme in Engineering, Humanities, Science and Commerce will be given stipend of nine thousand and eight thousand rupees per month respectively.
Cabinet approves continuation of umbrella scheme 'O-SMART
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its approval for the continuation of the umbrella scheme, Ocean Services, Modelling, Application, Resources and Technology, O-SMART of Ministry of Earth Sciences for implementation during the period from 2021-26 at an overall cost of 2 thousand 177 crore rupees.
  • The scheme encompasses seven sub-schemes namely Ocean Technology, Ocean Modelling and Advisory Services (OMAS), Ocean Observation Network (OON), Ocean Non-Living Resources, Marine Living Resources and Ecology (MLRE), Coastal Research and Operation and Maintenance of Research Vessels.
  • These sub-schemes are being implemented by autonomous and attached institutes of the Ministry like National Institute of Ocean Technology NIOT Chennai, Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services INCOIS Hyderabad, National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research NCPOR Goa, Center for Marine Living Resources and Ecology CMLRE Kochi and National Centre for Coastal Research NCCR Chennai as well as involving other national institutes.
  • A fleet of oceanographic and coastal research vessels of the Ministry provide required research support for scheme.
FM launches new schemes for women entrepreneurs, hotel & tour and tourism industry in J&K
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman handed over credit sanction letters of Rs 306 crore to beneficiaries in Jammu and Kashmir and announced a host of initiatives, including a Rs 200 crore cluster development fund for the Union territory.
  • She also virtually laid the foundation of rural self-employment training institute buildings at Shopian and Baramulla districts of the Kashmir Valley.
  • She also handed over sanction letters of Rs 306 crore to 145 beneficiaries of different banks and credit-linked schemes like the Pradhan Mantri Employment Generation Programme, MUDRA Scheme, Self-Help Groups, Joint-Liability Groups, among others.
'Urja Saksharta Abhiyan’ to be launched in Madhya Pradesh to make citizens aware about energy saving
In Madhya Pradesh ‘Urja Saksharta Abhiyan’ would be launched to make all the citizens aware about energy saving. The decision was taken in the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan.
  • The activities to be included in this campaign are to give information about  alternative sources of energy and steps towards energy conservation. Students of schools and colleges will act as volunteers in the campaign.
  • Efforts are also being made by state government to increase the share of electricity supply from renewable energy.
NITI Aayog launches Sustainable Development Goals Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22
NITI Aayog under the Indo-German Cooperation has released the inaugural Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Urban Index and Dashboard 2021-22. In its journey towards localizing the SDGs and instituting robust SDG progress monitoring systems at the national, State and UT and local levels, NITI Aayog has achieved yet another milestone with the launch of the inaugural SDG Urban Index and Dashboard (2021-22).
  • The index and dashboard are a result of the NITI Aayog-GIZ and BMZ collaboration focused on driving SDG localization in  cities, under the umbrella of Indo-German Development Cooperation.
  • Total fifty six urban areas were considered for computation. Shimla tops the Index followed by Coimbatore and Chandigarh. The index and dashboard will further strengthen SDG localization and institute robust SDG monitoring at the city level.
Govt approves proposals for construction of 3.61 lakh houses under PMAY-U
Government has approved the proposals for Construction of three lakh 61 thousand houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). These houses have been approved in the 56th meeting of Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee held in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Secretary, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs Durga Shanker Mishra.
  • With this, the total number of sanctioned houses under the Mission is now one crore 14 lakh. Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry the total investment under the mission is seven lakh 52 thousand crore rupees.

  • Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Bhagwanth Khuba hoped that this conference will be able to deliberate future challenges for Hydrogen Energy and find solutions.
  • He said, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized his conviction for decarbonisation of India in COP26. The Minister inspired technologists from IITs and other organizations for maximum research for Hydrogen Energy to culminate the challenge of reducing cost of production for eletrolysers.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu inaugurated the 24th edition of Bengaluru Tech Summit, which is being conducted in a hybrid format, will witness participation of over 30 countries.
  • For the first time, South Africa, Vietnam and the UAE will participate in the Bengaluru Tech Summit.
  • Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who virtually attended the summit announced that Australia will soon establish a consulate-general in Bengaluru.

Army Southern Command conducts multi agency exercise in Pune
Indian Army’s Pune-based Southern Command concluded a four-day multi-agency exercise ‘Sagar Shakti’ involving army, navy, air force, coast guard, Border Security Force and Gujarat state security in Kutchs’s Creek sector.
  • The exercise was part of ‘Dakshin Shakti’, being held in the training areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat with a focus on network-centric warfare, which denotes effective use of information technology and computer networking tools to form networks of various force elements in play on the battlefield.

Five-day biennial trilateral exercise Dosti between Maldives, India and Sri Lanka concludes
The 15th edition of the Maldives, India, and Sri Lanka biennial Trilateral Exercise 'Dosti', held in the Maldives is set to concluded. This year marked 30 years since the initiation of the exercise.
  • The coast guards of India, the Maldives and Sri Lanka undertook the five-day military exercise to enhance interoperability and cooperation.
  • Indian Coast Guard vessels, ICGS Vajra, ICGS Apoorva and, Sri Lanka Coast Guard, SLCGS Suraksha arrived in the Maldives for the exercise.
Nepal & India sign MoU on reciprocal recognition of COVID vaccination certificate
India and Nepal inked a Memorandum of Understanding for reciprocal recognition of COVID vaccination certificate to significantly ease the travel woes for fully vaccinated people from the two neighboring countries.
  • The MoU, between the health ministries of the two countries, is a significant step in easing travel for fully COVID-19 vaccinated travelers of both the countries.
  • It "marks another milestone in robust COVID-19 related cooperation and coordination between India and Nepal.
India, US agree on transitional approach on Equalisation Levy 2020
India and United States have agreed on a transitional approach on Equalisation Levy 2020. India and United States have agreed that the same terms that apply under the October 21 Joint Statement shall apply between the two countries with respect to India’s charge of two per cent equalisation levy on e-commerce supply of services and the United States’ trade action regarding the  Equalisation Levy.
  • However, the interim period that will be applicable will be from 1st of April 2022 till implementation of Pillar One or 31st March 2024, whichever is earlier.
  • India and United States will remain in close contact to ensure that there is a common understanding of the respective commitments and endeavor to resolve any further differences of views on this matter through constructive dialogue.


BANKING & FINANCE

India's 112 most under-developed districts becomes credit-worthy
Access to credit in the country’s most under-developed districts has grown rapidly following the introduction of the government’s aspirational district programme with microfinance loan outstanding in these districts rising 2.6-fold in the three-and-a-half years.
  • Microfinance portfolio outstanding in 112 of such districts stood at Rs 28,737 crore at the end of June, compared with Rs 11,175 crore as just before the launch of the programme in January 2018, a joint report by Equifax and Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) showed.
  • Nearly 43% of the loans were given by banks, the data showed. Small finance banks contributed 13% and NBFc-MFIs accounted for 37% of the loans.
Equitas SFB ties up with HDFC Bank for co-branded credit cards
Equitas Small Finance Bank had HDFC Bank have partnered for co-branded credit cards. 
  • The credit cards will be available for Equitas Small Finance Bank’s customers, with an aim to provide them with the facilities of the banking ecosystem.
  • The credit card can be availed in two categories. The first category is the ‘Excite Credit Card’ which offers a credit limit from ₹25,000 to ₹2 lakh and the second category is the ‘Elegance Credit Card’ which offers credit limit of over ₹2 lakh.
World Bank to provide $250 million loan for school learning project in Andhra Pradesh
World Bank will provide USD 250 million loan for a school education project in Andhra Pradesh, which will cover over 50 lakh students in the southern state.
  • The project will cover about 40 lakh students (6-14 year age group) in over 45,000 government schools, and over 10 lakh children (3-6 years) enrolled in Anganwadis (Integrated Child Development Centers), and about 1,90,000 teachers, and more than 50,000 Anganwadi workers.
  • It will introduce a one-year preschool-level course in 3,500 schools in the tribal blocks. Also, it will help address the issue of low learning levels amongst the tribal community.
  • The fund will be utilised for Supporting Andhra's Learning Transformation Project to encourage professional development of teachers; provide remedial learning courses for children impacted by Covid-19 pandemic.
JPMorgan named most important bank to health of financial system
JPMorgan Chase (JPM.N) has once again been named the world's most important bank to the health of the wider financial system, according to the latest annual ranking of top lenders by global regulators.
  • The Financial Stability Board (FSB), made up of regulators from G20 countries, published its latest table of the world's 30 most systemic banks.
  • The 30 lenders are divided between four "buckets" in order of how systemic, international, interconnected and complex they are, with JPMorgan now in a higher bucket than its nearest peers.BNP Paribas (BNPP.PA) and Goldman Sachs (GS.N) were also declared more systemic, both moving up one bucket.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

Goldman Sachs pegs India's GDP growth at 9.8% in FY23 
Indian GDP will grow at 8.5 per cent in 2021-22, and the rate will accelerate further to 9.8 per cent in 2022-23, a foreign brokerage said.
  • The GDP had contracted by 7.3 per cent in the pandemic-hit FY21, and is widely expected to grow at a faster pace due to the base effect in 2021-22. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) expects a 9.5 per cent growth in 2021-22, and the same to slow down to 7.8 per cent as things normalise.

Sweden's first ever female prime minister resigns
Just hours after being installed as Sweden’s first ever female prime minister, Magdalena Andersson dramatically resigned after suffering a budget defeat in parliament and then losing her coalition partner in a two-party minority government.
  • Ms Andersson said a decision by the Green Party to quit the two-party coalition had forced her to resign, but added that she had told the parliamentary speaker she hoped to be appointed prime minster again as the head of a single-party government.
Kuwait reappoints Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid as Prime Minister
Kuwait's Emir has reappointed Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid as prime minister and tasked with forming a cabinet that would be the Gulf OPEC oil producer's third this year in a domestic political standoff.
  • Sheikh Sabah, prime minister since late 2019, was reappointed by an emiri order issued by Crown Prince Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Sabah. The government had resigned on Nov. 8 in the standoff with the elected parliament.

  • The honorary title of “Knight of Parte Guelfa” has been conferred upon him during the conferring ceremony organized during the Investitures of Parte Guelfa of Annus Domini 2021 and was held at the Basilica of Santa Croce and the Palagio di Parte Guelfa in Florence, Italy.
  • Dr Sohan Roy, an Indian entrepreneur based in Sharjah, is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer, an award-winning director and a poet. Forbes listed him among the top Indian leaders of the Arab World four times in a row between 2015 and 2019.

Fourth Scorpene-class submarine 'INS Vela' commissioned into Indian Navy
INS Vela, the fourth Scorpene-class submarine was commissioned into the Indian Navy, a short while ago, in the presence of Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh, at the naval dockyard in Mumbai.
  • The P-75 project represents the growing strategic congruence between the two nations, India and France.
  • INS Vela has the ability to undertake an entire spectrum of submarine operations. Admiral Singh said, given today's dynamic and complex security situation, its capability and firepower will play a crucial role in enhancing Navy's ability to protect India's maritime interests.
NASA, SpaceX Launch DART: First Test Mission to Defend Planet Earth
Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a new mission was launched by NASA to test technology for defending Earth against potential asteroid or comet hazards.
  • The DART mission was lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.Just one part of NASA's larger planetary defence strategy, DART - built and managed by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland - will impact a known asteroid that is not a threat to Earth.
  • DART will show that a spacecraft can autonomously navigate to a target asteroid and intentionally collide with it - a method of deflection called kinetic impact. The test will provide important data to help better prepare for an asteroid that might pose an impact hazard to Earth, should one ever be discovered.
