India's first grass conservatory established in Uttarakhand's Ranikhet
A grass conservatory spread across 2 acres and having 90 species of grass, which the Uttarakhand forest department claims to be the first of its kind in the country, was opened in Ranikhet.
  • The germplasm conservation centre – built by the research wing of the forest department over three years using compensatory afforestation (CAMPA) funds - displays scientific, ecological, medicinal and cultural information related to all 90 grass species.
14th edition of cyber security conference 'c0c0n' inaugurated by Gen. Bipin Rawat
Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat inaugurated the 14th edition of 'c0c0n', an annual Hacking and Cyber Security Briefing, which held virtually.The theme of this year's 'c0c0n' is - Improvise, Adapt and Overcome,
  • The conference, which is being conducted by Kerala Police in association with two non-profit organisations, Society for the Policing of Cyberspace(POLCYB) and Information Security Research Association (ISRA), would be primarily discussing online scams and defenses during the lockdown period.
  • The conference "aims to discuss at the international level the challenges facing the digital world during the COVID period and the solutions needed to overcome them.
Union Minister unveils plaque to rename Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses after late Manohar Parrikar
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh unveiled a plaque to rename Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses after late Manohar Parrikar. 
  • The renaming as Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (MP-IDSA) by the Defence Minister, who is the President of the Institute, follows the unanimous decision by the general body earlier this year.
  • He also inaugurated the 100 KW Grid connected rooftop solar power plant on the occasion. Our correspondent reports, the Solar Power Plant project has been set up under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s scheme for promoting solar roof-top plants on government buildings.
82nd edition of AIPOC held in Shimla 
The All India Presiding Officers’ Conference, AIPOC, the apex body of the Legislatures in India, is celebrating its hundred years this year. To commemorate the Centennial Year of AIPOC, the 82nd edition of the All India Presiding Officers’ Conference begin in Shimla.
  • The 82nd AIPOC will discuss on topics, Journey of a Century - Evaluation and the way forward and Responsibility of Presiding Officers towards the Constitution, the House and the People.
India's First Food Museum Inaugurated In Thanjavur District
Union Minister for Commerce, Industry, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal virtually launched India's first Food Museum in Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu and said measures were on to make the country go up the ladder from currently being the fifth largest agricultural exporter in the world.
  • The museum has been established by Food Corporation of India (FCI) in association with Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum (VITM), Bengaluru, at an investment of about ₹1.1 crore.
  • Spread over an area of 1,860 square feet, the museum showcases the evolution process – the transformation of the nomadic hunter gatherers’ to settled agriculture producers leading to the beginning of civilizations. Models of various ancient grain storage methods, both global and indigenous, are displayed at the museum.
PM Modi launches Ration Aapke Gram, Sickle Cell Mission, other schemes for Janjatiya community
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched key initiatives for the Janjatiya community on Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas Mahasammelan. Among the schemes introduced, the PM launched the 'Ration Aapke Gram' scheme in Madhya Pradesh, the Madhya Pradesh Sickle Cell Mission, and laid the foundation of 50 Eklavya Model Residential Schools across the country.
  • This comes in the backdrop of India celebrating the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda every year on 15th November as Tribal Gaurav Diwas, starting with the Amrit Mahotsav this year.
  • Under the Ration Aapke Gram scheme, Ration will be distributed in the village itself through ration distribution vehicles under the scheme. For the operation of the scheme, 485 vehicles have been contracted in the state through which fair price ration will be distributed in 74 tribal development blocks of 16 districts of the state.


INTERNATIONAL NEWS

China overtakes US as world's richest nation: Report
China has surpassed the United States to become the richest nation in the world as global wealth tripled over the past two decades, according to a new report by the research arm of consultants McKinsey & Co.
  • The report has been prepared after examining the national balance sheets of 10 countries, representing more than 60 per cent of world income.
  • The worldwide net worth rose to $514 trillion in 2020, from $156 trillion in 2000, according to research conducted by McKinsey & Co. China emerged at the top of the worldwide list, accounting for almost one-third of the increase.
  • China’s wealth jumped to $120 trillion in 2020 from just $7 trillion in 2000. This marks a jump of $113 trillion in 20 years, helping the nation surpass the United States in terms of net worth.
  • The report also indicated that 68 per cent of global net worth is stored in real estate and the balance is held in assets such as infrastructure, machinery and equipment.
Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai among worlds top 10 polluted cities 
Of the world's top 10 cities with the worst air quality, three - Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai, are in India, data from air quality and pollution city tracking service from IQAir, a Switzerland-based climate group showed.
  • While Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) at 556 made it to the top of the list, Kolkata and Mumbai recorded an AQI of 177 and 169, respectively, at fourth and sixth position, on the list.The cities with the worst AQI indices also include Lahore, in Pakistan, and Chengdu, in China.
  • An AQI between zero and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, then 401 and between 500 is considered ‘severe’.
Sixth-edition of Indo-France joint military exercise 'EX-SHAKTI 2021' begins at French port town of Frejus
The sixth edition of Indo France joint military exercise 'EX-SHAKTI 2021' is being conducted at the French port town of Frejus. The 12-day long bilateral exercise, will conclude on the 26th of this month.
  • The exercise SHAKTI will focus on Counter-Terrorism operations in the backdrop of semi-urban terrain under UN Mandate with an aim to enhance military cooperation and inter-operability between the two Armies.
  • A platoon strength of a Gorkha Rifles Infantry Battalion is representing the Indian Army in this 12-day bilateral exercise. Whereas The French side is being represented by troops of the 21st Marine Infantry Regiment of the 6th Light Armoured Brigade.
INS Karmuk takes part in India, Singapore, Thailand Trilateral Maritime Exercise SITMEX - 21
Indian Naval Ship INS Karmuk and an indigenously built Missile Corvette is participating in the 3rd edition of India, Singapore and Thailand Trilateral two day Maritime Exercise SITMEX - 21 in Andaman Sea.
  • SITMEX is being conducted annually since 2019 with an aim to enhance mutual inter-operability and imbibing best practices between Indian Navy, Republic of Singapore Navy and Royal Thai Navy.
  • The exercise is being conducted as a non-contact, at sea only exercise in view of COVID-19 restrictions and highlights growing synergy, coordination and cooperation in the maritime domain between the three friendly navies.

Paytm Money launches AI powered 'Voice Trading'
Homegrown fintech platform Paytm announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary Paytm Money has launched ‘Voice Trading’, powered by artificial intelligence, allowing users to place a trade or get information about stocks via single voice command.
  • This service has been launched in line with Paytm Money’s efforts to offer next-gen and AI-driven tech to elevate user experience.
  • The voice trading feature enables a single voice command, with the use of neural networks and natural language processing (NLP) to allow instant processing.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

IIP grows by 3.1% in September
Country's Index of Industrial Production, or IIP, grew 3.1% in September. In August, Industrial production had jumped 11.9 percent. IIP has maintained significant growth from March 2021 onwards, aided by a continuing low base effect last year.
  • Among the major sectors, the mining index in September gained 8.6% while the manufacturing Index rose 2.7%. Basic Metal Index advanced 5.4%. Electricity Index inched up 0.9%.

Small Industries Development Bank of India (Sidbi) said it has launched the second window of Swavalamban Challenge Fund (SCF) with Green Bharat as prioritised theme.
  • The focus of the fund is on innovative projects addressing the green, clean or efficient climate change.
  • Other themes are sustainable livelihood, financial inclusion, and access to financial services and promoting the culture of entrepreneurship.

Film star Puneeth Rajkumar to be honoured with Karnataka Ratna award
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai has announced Karnataka Ratna award for the film star Puneeth Rajkumar popularly known as Power Star who passed away last month. He will be the 10th recipient of the state’s highest civilian honour.
  • The young actor was not only popular on celluloid screen but had contributed generously to charities and foundations including a donation of 50 lakh rupees paid to the Karnataka CM Relief Fund to help fight Covid 19.
Guinness World Records recognises achievement of BRO for constructing
Director General of Border Roads Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry received the Guinness World Records certificate for the achievement of Border Roads Organisation of constructing and black topping the world’s highest motorable road.
  • It has been constructed at 19,024 feet at Umlingla Pass in Ladakh. Official adjudicator of the Guinness World Records Rishi Nath acknowledged this remarkable achievement in a virtual ceremony.
  • On the occasion, Lt Gen Rajeev Chaudhry said that this road construction tested both the human spirit and efficacy of machines in an extremely tough terrain where temperatures in winters dip to Minus 40 degrees and oxygen levels are 50 percent below normal.
UN Body Selects Telangana's Pochampally as One of the Best Tourism Villages
Pochampally village in Telangana about 50 km has been selected as one of the best Tourism Villages by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), an official release from the office of Union Minister G Kishan Reddy said.
  • The Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO Pilot initiative aims to award those villages which are outstanding examples of rural destinations and showcase good practises in line with its specified nine evaluation areas.
  • It also aims to support villages to enhance their rural tourism potential through training and access to opportunities for improvement.

Punjab Government Launches Career Portal that Aims to Give Professional Guidance to Students
Punjab Education Minister Pargat Singh unveiled a career portal aimed at providing professional guidance to students of schools and colleges of the State.
  • The state education department has launched the portal in association with UNICEF India and Aasman Foundation.
  • During the launch of the partal, https://punjabcareerportal.com/, the minister said that one major reason behind the unemployment problem of Punjab is the inability to choose the right career option. If students are able to get adequate career guidance at the opportune time, they can work wonders in accordance with their capability.


OBITUARIES

Renowned Mappilapattu Peer Mohammed singer passes away at 75
Noted Mappila song ( Mappilapattu ) artist Peer Mohammed passed away at Kannur. He was 75.
  • Peer Mohammed played a significant role in popularising Mappila songs and is regarded as one of the pioneers of Mappilapattu tradition. He was the first artist to present Mappilapattu on Doordarshan in 1976.
  • Peer Mohammed won several awards including Kerala Folklore Academy Award, Kerala Mappila Sangeetha Academy Award, and Moyeenkutty Vaidyar Smaraka Award among others.
