CBSE launches Veer Gatha project to inform students about bravery of armed forcesTo make school students aware of the stories of bravery of Indian Armed Forces, recently the Ministry of Defence proposed that school students should be made to undertake the projects based on the valour of armed and paramilitary forces. The Department of School Education & Literacy, Education Ministry would organise the Veer Gatha Project starting from October 21 till November 20, 2021.
- Veer Gatha Project would be launched on CBSE IT platform for CBSE schools and for the state government run schools on MyGov platform.
- Teachers should explain to students about the gallantry award winners and motivate them to learn about the gallantry award winners and encourage students to participate in the project.
- Also, online and offline programmes would be conducted to promote the awareness about the lives and sacrifices of the gallantry award winners.
The government has approved 8.5% rate of interest on employees' provident fund for the 2020-21 fiscal, a source said.
- The rate was the same for 2019-20. The labour ministry will now notify the interest rate before the EPFO starts crediting the same into individual accounts. The entire exercise may take a maximum of 30 days to complete from the date the rate is notified, a senior EPFO official said.

The Union Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah has launched the Dairy Sahakar scheme at Gujarat's Anand with the overall objectives of doubling the farmers' income and Atmanirbhar Bharat. He also addressed Amul's 75th foundation day in Anand.
- The total outlay of the Dairy Sahakar scheme is Rs 5000 crore. The scheme will be implemented by National Cooperative Development Corporation ( NCDC) under the Ministry of Cooperation.
- Under the scheme, NCDC will extend financial support to eligible cooperatives for activities like bovine development, milk procurement, processing, quality assurance, value addition, branding, packaging, marketing, transportation and storage of milk and milk products, exports of dairy products among others.
Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh launched India's first manned ocean mission Samudrayan at Chennai.
- With the launch of this Unique Ocean Mission, India joins the elite club of nations such as the USA, Russia, Japan, France and China to have such underwater vehicles for carrying out subsea activities.
- The Minister informed that sea trials of 500 metre rated shallow water version of the manned submersible are expected to take place in the last quarter of 2022 and the MATSYA 6000, the deepwater manned submersible will be ready for trials by the second quarter of 2024.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated a two-day lengthy Apple Pageant-2021 organised in Srinagar within the digital presence of Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar.
- With an annual production of more than 2.2 million tonnes, the apple from J&K contributes to 87% of the national production and is linked to the livelihood of about 30% of the population.
Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the nationwide expansion of the Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine (PCV), and said it will help reduce childhood mortality by around 60 per cent. For the first time in the country that the PCV will be available for universal use.
- The Union minister also released communication and awareness packages on the vaccine which will be shared with all states and union territories.
- The objective of the vaccine is to save the lives of our children. The launch of PCV will further ensure healthy growth and development of our children.

IAF's Mirage 2000 squadron takes part in Blue Flag exercise in IsraelIndian Air Force’s Mirage 2000 aircraft squadron is taking part in the Blue Flag 2021 international exercise which was launched in Israel.
- Seven countries including Israel, Germany, Italy, Britain, France, India, Greece and the US are taking part in the war games.
- The Indian Mirages and the French Rafale are participating in the exercise for the first time.

ADB approves $250 million loan for India's industrial corridor developmentThe Asian Development Bank (ADB) said it has approved a USD 250 million (about Rs 1,875 crore) loan to support India's National Industrial Corridor Development Program (NICDP).
- This is the first subprogram of the programmatic USD 500 million loan to develop 11 industrial corridors spanning 17 states.
- NICDP aims to develop world-class industrial nodes that are supported by efficient urban agglomerations and multimodal connectivity, including international gateways like ports and airports and inclusive, climate-resilient, and sustainable infrastructure.

Govt. appoints Justice Ashok Bhushan as NCLAT chairpersonThe government has appointed Justice Ashok Bhushan, a former judge of the Supreme Court, as chairperson of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).
- Besides, it has appointed Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court, as President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).
- Both the NCLT and NCLAT are getting permanent heads after more than one-and-a-half years following the retirement of their respective incumbents.
OBITUARIES
Eminent Kerala oncologist M Krishnan Nair passes awayEminent oncologist and Padma Shri awardee Dr M Krishnan Nair, the founding director of the famed Regional Cancer Centre, died in Thiruvananthapuram following age-related ailments. He was 81.
- Nair played a key role in the opening of the paediatric wing at RCC in the 1980s, also led the setting up of a Community and Preventive Oncology Department there aiming to create awareness about the disease.
- He also served as a member of the Expert Advisory Panel of the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding cancer and the National Cancer Control Plan.
Afghanistan's former prime minister Ahmad Shah Ahmadzai has passed away at the age of 78.
- Ahmadzai served as prime minister of Afghanistan from 1995 to 1996 soon before the Taliban took control of the country.
- Earlier this month, he returned to Afghanistan from India through Attari check post with Pakistan.
Legendary Australian all-rounder Alan Davidson, who played 44 Tests since he made his debut in 1953, passed away morning at the age of 92.
- The New South Wales all-rounder, a left-arm swing bowler who claimed 186 wickets and scored 1328 runs during his career, played in 44 Tests for Australia and was inducted into the International Cricket Council's Hall of Fame in 2011.

- The book revisits the life of John Lang, the Australian writer-lawyer settled in India in the 19th century who fought many cases against the British and also represented Rani Laxmibai in her legal battle against the annexation of her kingdom of Jhansi by the East India Company.
