Panel to conduct survey for sub-categorisation of OBC

A commission examining the sub-categorisation of the Central list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) has decided to get a countrywide survey conducted by an agency to have an estimate of the caste-wise population figures and has sought funds from the Centre for the same.

  • Justice G Rohini (retd), who is heading the five-member panel, set up to suggest parameters for an equitable distribution of OBC reservation. 

  • The Union Cabinet on November 22 had approved the extension of the commission's term till May 31, 2019, the fourth one since its formation in October 2017.

  • The Central list of OBCs comprises more than 2,600 castes, many of which are small in number and occupy distinct place geographically, which is why it is necessary to have a large sample covering every sub-district of all states and UTs.


ATMs declined by 1,000 to 2.07 lakh in FY18, says RBI report

The number of ATMs has declined marginally to 2.07 lakh in FY18 from 2.08 lakh in FY17, primarily due to branch rationalisation by a few public sector banks, the Reserve Bank said in its annual report. In FY18, the number of ATMs of state-run banks declined to 1.45 lakh from 1.48 lakh in FY17,” the RBI said in the ‘Trends & Progress of Banking in 2017-18’ report.

  • Similarly, the number of operational on-site ATMs too came down to 1.06 lakh during the year from 1.09 lakh in FY17, while that of off-site ATMs increased to 1 lakh from 98,545.

  • However, private sector banks installed more ATMs taking their total number to 60,145 in FY18, up from 58,833 in the previous fiscal year. 


Chariot Festival Celebrated In Madurai Meenakshi Temple In Tamil Nadu

The unique Chapparam (Chariot) festival was celebrated with traditional rituals and festivities in the famous Madurai Meenakshi temple, in Tamil Nadu. The fest symbolizes the importance of preserving all kinds of food and fodder.

  • Cooked rice, which is distributed among devotees, are taken home and preserved because it signifies prosperity for the whole year. Another specialty of the festival is that the chariot of Goddess Meenakshi is pulled by lady devotees alone.

Microsoft has selected Kerala Police's Facebook page, which has over 10 lakh followers, to study the organisation's new age media interactions. Kerala Police is known for posting funny memes and witty responses to address social issues to the public through its page.

  • Kerala Police's page is more popular than New York Police Department's page which has 7.9 lakh followers.


Arunachal Pradesh Was Given A Permanent Battalion Of The NDRF

Arunachal Pradesh was given a permanent battalion of the National Disaster Response Force and Chief Minister Pema Khandu laid the foundation stone for the 12th battalion headquarters at Hollongi, Itanagar.

  • The headquarters were first proposed in 2014 but was delayed due to land availability issues.

China’s Chang’e-4 probe Geared to Land on Dark Side of the Moon



A Chinese space probe is moving into position to land on the dark side of the moon for the first time. The probe, the Chang'e-4, entered a planned orbit "to prepare for the first ever soft landing on the far side of the moon". 

  • China launched the Chang'e-4 probe earlier this month, carried by a Long March-3B rocket. It includes a lander and a rover to explore the surface of the moon.

  • The tasks of the Chang'e-4 include astronomical observation, surveying the moon's terrain, landform and mineral composition, and measuring the neutron radiation and neutral atoms to study the environment on the far side of the moon.

Uzbekistan Promotes 2019 As Year Of Investment In Backdrop Of Wider Business With India

Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his annual address to the Parliament announced 2019 as the ‘Year of Active Investment and Social Development’ in the backdrop of proposed investments from India to boost economy of this Central Asian country.

  • It would be a logical continuation of activities that begun in 2018 under the program of the ‘Year of support of active entrepreneurship, innovative ideas and technologies’.

  • India has been invited to make large scale investments across sectors in Uzbekistan taking advantage of economic reforms and Special economic zones (SEZs).

  • More than 2,600 business projects have been implemented at places within the framework of “Every family is an entrepreneur” and “Youth is our future” programs.


Banks' recovery improves after insolvency code, changes in Sarfaesi: Report

Recovery of Indian banks improved in 2017-18 after the implementation of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) and amendment of the Sarfaesi Act, according to the Trends and Progress Report. The central bank corrected data for the IBC recovery. 

  • For the 701 cases admitted under the National Company Law Tribunals (NCLT), and claims admitted on 21 accounts for an amount of Rs 99 billion, the recovery has been Rs 49 billion, indicating a haircut of about 50 per cent.

Centre Approves Rs 10,000 Crore For Human Space Mission Gaganyaan

The Union Cabinet approved Rs 10,000 crore budget for the proposed human spaceflight mission (Gaganyaan), which envisages to send astronauts to space by 2022. The Union Cabinet has approved the Gaganyaan project under which a three-member crew will be sent to space for at least seven days. 

  • Isro has kick-started the process of selecting experiments that could be performed in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO), where it will send Indian astronauts (Gaganauts).


International Camel Festival To Be Held At Bikaner From Jan 2019

Activities such as fur cutting, camel decoration, designing among others would be organised at the 26th International Camel Festival, which will be held on January 12 and 13 in Bikaner. Domestic and foreign tourists are expected to take part in the festival in large numbers.

PM Modi Renames Ross , Neil & Havelock Islands In Andaman & Nicobar



Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the renaming of three islands of Andaman and Nicobar on the occasion of 75th anniversary of Tricolour hoisting by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in Port Blair.

  • The Ross Island has been renamed as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the Neil Island would now be known as Shaheed Dweep and the Havelock Island as Swaraj Dweep.

  • Mr Modi also released a commemorative stamp, its first-day cover and a 75 rupees coin on this special day. He also announced setting up of a deemed university after Netaji Bose.

  • Mr Modi also dedicated the 150 feet high Flag Mast at South Point in Port Blair commemorating the historic event of the hoisting of first Tricolor on Indian soil by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in Port Blair on Dec 30, 1943.


PM Modi Inaugurate 106th Indian Science Congress 2019 In Punjab

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate Indian Science Congress-2019 in Jalandhar, Punjab on 3 January. This will be the 106th edition of the event based on the theme ‘Future India: Science and Technology’.

  • The Prime Minister will also address about 30,000 delegates, including Nobel laureates, eminent scientists, policymakers, young researchers and school children, from across the country and abroad. During the five-day long Congress, more than 100 conferences and events on science and technology will be held.

Dharmendra Pradhan launches Ujjwala sanitary napkin initiative

Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan launched the Ujjwala Sanitary Napkin initiative in Bhubaneswar, which will expand women’s access to hygiene products and provide them with employment opportunities in every district of the state.

  • Under this programme, 100 manufacturing units will come up at the common services centres (CSCs) covering 93 blocks in all 30 districts of the stateat an estimated cost of 2.94 crore.

  • The Central scheme will be a counter to the Odisha government’s Khushi scheme, in which sanitary napkins are provided free of cost to female students of government and government-aided schools in the state.


Madhya Pradesh Government to create an Adhyatmik Vibhag

The Government of Madhya Pradesh has announced setting up of a new Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department). The proposed new department will be set up by merging several existing departments. Dharmik Nyas Evam Dharmasv Department (Religious Trust and Endowment Department), Anand Vibhag (Happiness Department) in addition to the Directorate of Religious Trust and Endowment, Madhya Pradesh Teerth Evam Mela Pradhikaran and Rajya Anand Sansthan would be merged to form the proposed Adhyatmik Vibhag (spiritual department).

  • Madhya Pradesh had become the first state in the country to create Happiness Department. The government had also announced the setting up of the Happiness Institute.

All vehicles to come fitted with high security number plates from April 1, 2019



All motor vehicles will come fitted with tamper-proof high-security registration plates (HSRPs) from April 1 to protect against counterfeiting. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said the proposal to amend the concerned rule in Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 and revision of the HSRP Order, 2001 was placed in the public domain for soliciting objections/suggestions and was discussed in a meeting on June 5, 2018.

  • An HSRP is a chromium-based hologram applied by hot stamping on the number plates both at the front and back besides laser-branding of a permanent identification number. Third registration mark refers to a chromium-based hologram sticker affixed on the inner side of the vehicles’ windshield which will have the details of registration. 


6th International Rice Research Institute inaugurated in UP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the IRRI South Asia Regional Centre (ISARC) at the campus of National Seed Research and Training Centre (NSRTC) in Varanasi. The first international centre in eastern India is expected to improve crop production, seed quality and the nutritional value of rice.is expected to play a major role in harnessing and sustaining rice production in the region.

  • With an aim to double farmers’ income, the Prime Minister dedicated the country the 6th IRRI SARC campus in Varanasi which will serve as a hub for rice research and training in South Asia and SAARC region.

World's first single-use plastic free passenger flight takes off

Portuguese airline Hi Fly decided to bring about a change by introducing single-use plastic free flight. The flight took off from Lisbon to Natale, Brazil, without a single piece of single-use plastic on board.

  • Other airlines such as Air New Zealand and Alaska Airlines are also following similar approaches to reduce their plastic usage onboard.

Govt infuses Rs 2159 cr in United Bank of India

State-owned United Bank of India said the government has decided to infuse Rs 2,159 crore in the bank as part of Rs 28,615 crore capital infusion to be done in about half a dozen banks. The government has decided to pump Rs 28,615 crore into seven public sector banks (PSBs) through recapitalisation bonds soon.

  • The recapitalisation would enhance the lending capacity of PSBs and help them come out of the Reserve Bank of India's Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework.

RBI allows Sidbi to use an existing Rs 1000-crore corpus for lending to MFIs

India’s institutional framework to support microfinance would get a boost with Reserve Bank of India clearing a proposal to dig in an existing Rs 1000-crore corpus for funding micro lenders. The development bank will now use the money to offer soft loans to Micro Financial Institutions (MFIs) on a condition that end borrowers should get loans at 15-17% rate, which is significantly lower than the prevailing 20-22% market rate.

  • Sidbi has so far tied up with not for profit entities such as Uttar Pradesh-based Cashpor Micro Credit and Karnataka-based Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) for channelling micro loans at a lower-than-market rate.


RBI relaxes withdrawal limit for depositors of City Co-operative Bank

The Reserve Bank has increased the withdrawal limit for depositors of City Co-operative Bank Ltd, Mumbai, to Rs 5,000. Amid weakening of the financial position of the cooperative bank, the RBI in April had imposed several restrictions on it, including limiting the withdrawal by depositors to Rs 1,000. 

  • A sum not exceeding Rs 5,000 of total balance in every savings bank account or current account or term deposit account or any other deposit account may be allowed to be withdrawn by depositor.


ICICI Bank tops list of most employees caught in fraud

ICICI Bank has topped the list of banks with maximum number of employees on whom action has been taken in the last three years for involvement in frauds. In the last three years, action has been taken against 13,949 bank officials belonging to 60 PSU banks and private banks.

  • ICICI Bank officials alone account for 2,236 or 16% (one-sixth) of the total such cases. In each of these three years, 2015, 2016 and 2017, the number of ICICI Bank officials against whom the action has been taken was in the range of over 600 to under 900.

India pips China in FDI inflows for the first time in 20 years

For the first time in two decades, India has been getting more foreign investment than its neighbour China. In 2018, India saw more than $38 billion of inbound deals compared with China’s $32 billion. 

  • India’s foreign direct investment (FDI) was the highest ever with 235 deals amounting to $37.76 billion this calendar year, according to data from Dealogic, a global M&A and capital markets data provider, beating China, which has historically been the favourite for emerging market bets. China’s trade standoff with the US is seen as a major reason for the slowdown.


RBI extends enhanced single borrower limit facility for NBFCs till March 31

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) extended the enhanced single borrower limit facility for NBFC sector by another 3 months to provide much needed liquidity support. This facility was valid till December 31, 2018.

  • In order to further facilitate banks to lend to Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) and Housing Finance Companies (HFCs), it has been decided to extend the aforesaid facilities up to March 31, 2019. 

  • A bank can give loans to the extent of 15 per cent of its capital fund to a particular non-banking finance company (NBFC) or Housing Finance Company (HFC).
    The move will help provide liquidity to NBFCs, which have come under pressure following series of default by Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Limited (IL&FS) group companies.

Luka Modric named Balkan athlete of the year 2018

Croatia captain Luka Modric was named Balkan Athlete of the Year becoming only the second soccer player to scoop the prize after Bulgaria's former European Footballer of the Year Hristo Stoichkov in 1994.

  • The 33-year-old, who received 75 points in the 46th poll, organised by Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), beat Serbia's world number one tennis player Novak Djokovic, who topped the annual poll five times in a row between 2011 and 2015.

  • Another tennis player, Romania's Simona Halep, who finished the year as women's world number one for the second consecutive season, came third in the poll.

An Indian-American teenager has won the inaugural "Digital Transformation Hackathon" at Cornell University for designing a device to detect the actual pain level of a patient during a diagnosis.

  • The device designed by 17-year-old Mahum Siddiqi and her team uses neurological activity occurring in one's brain to help doctors more efficiently determine someone's pain levels.

Former Nigerian President Shehu Shagari passed away in the country's capital city of Abuja at the age of 93. He served seven times in a ministerial or cabinet post as a federal minister and federal commissioner from 1958-1975 before he was elected president in 1979.

India to contribute Rs 4,500 cr to Bhutan for 12th five-year plan



India will contribute Rs 4,500 crore to Bhutan for the 12th five-year plan, announced Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The announcement comes during the official three-day visit of Bhutanese Prime Minister Lotay Tshering.

  • He also revealed that the Mange-Dechchu project will soon be completed and the tariff of the project has also been agreed upon. Welcoming Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering and his delegation to India, Prime Minister Modi stated that his visit will strengthen and give momentum to India-Bhutan relations.

President inaugurates centenary of world's oldest yoga institute in Mumbai

President R.N. Kovind inaugurated the centenary celebrations of The Yoga Institute, the world's oldest organized institute of yoga studies, which turned 100 recently. 

  • Acknowledged for its contribution to holistic development of Yoga for householders and families, it became the country's first Yoga school certified by the Quality Council of India, Ministry of AYUSH, and bagged the Prime Minister's Award 2018 for outstanding contribution for promotion and development of the ancient Indian science.

Indian airports set to install body scanners from 2019

Airports in India will be able to use body scanners from next year and spare “clean” passengers physical frisking. The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) is soon going to come out with technical specifications of these scanners and then airports can install and machines meeting those norms.

  • For infra-starved Indian airports handling way more passengers than their built capacity, this technology used widely abroad, especially the US, promises to speed up security checks as well as check spiralling security manpower costs.

NHRC launches toll-free helpline 14433 facility to file complaint through CSC

The NHRC launched a toll-free number and also a facility to file complaints through Common Service Centre (CSC). Justice (retd) H L Dattu, the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, unveiled the toll-free number 14433 at a brief ceremony at the Manav Adhikar Bhawan, New Delhi.

  • As a part of the collaborative programme with the Common Service Centre team, the NHRC, to begin with, has shortlisted 750 Common Service Centres with at least one each in a district.

Pakistan set to issue 'Panda bond' in Chinese currency



Pakistan's cabinet has approved the issuance of first-ever renminbi-denominated bonds to raise loans from China's capital markets, as the country moved a step forward to give the Chinese currency a status at par with the US dollar.

  • The 'Panda Bonds' was approved in a Cabinet meeting, led by Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad.


Japan decides to withdraw from IWC

Japan has decided to withdraw from the International Whaling Commission (IWC) and will resume commercial whaling July next year. Tokyo will officially inform the IWC of its decision by the end of the year, which will mean the withdrawal comes into effect by June 30.

  • Leaving the IWC means Japanese whalers will be able to resume hunting in Japanese coastal waters of minke and other whales currently protected by the IWC.

Bhutan PM Lotay Tshering visits India



Prime Minister of Bhutan Lotay Tshering reached New Delhi on a three-day official visit to India. The visit takes place during the Golden Jubilee year of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between the two countries.

  • Dr Tshering will be accorded ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will also pay homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Train 18 becomes India's fastest train



Railway minister Piyush Goyal, announced that Train 18 is now the fastest train in India. India's first indigenously built engine-less train, meant for intra-day travel, can cut down travel time by 10 to 15 per cent compared to the Shatabdi. It is developed by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF) at a cost of Rs 100 crore. 

  • Train 18 will replace the current Shatabdi Express. The train is capable of touching 200 kmph provided the other systems like tracks and signals support the speed. The ICF plans to roll out one more Train 18 this fiscal and four by the next fiscal.


Railways develops AI-powered robot 'USTAAD' to check for faults in trains

To make trains more safe by eliminating human errors, Central Railway has developed an AI-powered robot which would click pictures and record videos of the under-gears of trains and send them to engineers for repairs and maintenance.

  • The mechanical branch of Central Railway's Nagpur division has developed the robot named USTAAD (Undergear Surveillance Through Artificial Intelligence Assisted Droid), which examines parts of the coach in real time with a HD camera and transmits them over WiFi.

  • With the help of USTAAD, engineers can easily see and examine areas which are hard to see and hard to approach such as cramped or narrow spaces between under-gear parts.


Jharkhand's Pakur ranked worst, TN's Virudhunagar best among aspirational districts

The NITI Aayog ranked Jharkhand's Pakur district the worst and Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar the best among the nation's 111 backward districts.

  • The second "delta ranking" of backward districts which the NITI Aayog has dubbed as aspirational districts was released by its CEO Amitabh Kant, reflecting the incremental progress made by the districts between June and October.

  • Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in January, the "Transformation of Aspirational Districts" programme aims to quickly and effectively transform some of the most underdeveloped districts of the country.


3rd Dwijing Festival begins in Chirang

In Assam, the third Dwijing Festival has begun on the bank of Aye river at Chirang district. Around 15 lakh tourists are expected to participate in the festival. Assam  Public Health Engineering (PHE) minister Rihon Daimary inaugurated the festival in presence of several dignitaries.

  • Adventure sports, food mart, cultural events, traditional games are being organized in the 12 day long event. Participants from Thailand, Bhutan and Bangladesh are also taken part in the festival.

The 26th National Childres's Science Congress has been inaugurated by the Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik in Bhubaneswar. Inaugurating the Congress session, Shri Patnaik has said that the progress of science is essential for the National growth and healthy Nation. Odisha government is organizing various programmes for the development of scientific temper among students.

Thailand Becomes First Country in Southeast Asia to Legalise Medical Marijuana

Thailand has approved the use of medical marijuana, making it the first country in southeast Asia to do so. The country's interim parliament voted on the amendment in the Narcotics Bill. The measure is expected to take effect in 2019.

  • Although the drug will be legalized for medical purposes, it is still outlawed for recreational use. The penalty for recreational use of the drug is up to five years in prison for the possession of 10 kilograms or less. Marijuana can be helpful in easing symptoms of many medical conditions, including chronic pain, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, glaucoma, epilepsy and nausea.

American adventurer Colin O'Brady completes world's first solo trek across Antarctica without aid



An American adventurer has become the first person to complete a solo trek across Antarctica without assistance of any kind. Mr Colin O'Brady, 33, took 54 days to complete the nearly 1,600km crossing of the frozen continent from north to south.

  • Mr O'Brady and an Englishman, Army Captain Louis Rudd, 49, set off individually from Union Glacier in a bid to be the first to complete a solo, unassisted crossing of Antarctica.

  • In 2016, an English army officer, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Worsley, a friend of Capt Rudd's, died while trying to complete an unassisted solo crossing of Antarctica.

India's April-November fiscal deficit crosses 115% of target

India's budgetary fiscal deficit for the April-November period at Rs 7.17 lakh crore has exceeded the target for the full fiscal, accounting for 114.8 per cent of the budgeted target of Rs 6.24 lakh crore, mainly owing to slow revenue growth during the period.

  • The data furnished by the Controller General of Accounts (CGA) showed that the fiscal deficit during the corresponding eight months of the previous fiscal was 112 per cent.


Bimal Jalan to head six-member panel on RBI’s economic capital framework

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), in consultation with the government, has set up a six-member committee to review the economic capital framework of the central bank. Former RBI Governor Bimal Jalan will be the committee’s chairman and former Deputy Governor Rakesh Mohan deputy chairman.

  • The other members are Economic Affairs Secretary Subash Chandra Garg, RBI Deputy Governor N.S. Vishwanathan and two board members of the RBI Bharat Doshi and Sudhir Mankad.

  • The terms of reference of the committee would be to review status, need and justification of various provisions, reserves and buffers presently provided for by the RBI, keeping in mind ‘public policy mandate of the RBI, including financial stability considerations.’


RBI launches survey on people's retail payment habits

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has launched a survey to understand the "Retail Payment Habits of Individuals" (SRPHi). According to the central bank, the survey will cover a sample of 6,000 individuals from different socio-economic background across six cities, viz., Delhi, Mumbai Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru and Guwahati.

  • The survey seeks qualitative responses from individuals on their payment habits.


Centre tighten norms for e-commerce companies for sale of products

Tightening norms for e-commerce firms having foreign investment, the government barred online marketplaces like Flipkart and Amazon from selling products of companies where they hold stakes and banned exclusive marketing arrangements that could influence product price.

  • The revised policy on foreign direct investment in online retail, issued by the Commerce and Industry Ministry, also said that these firms have to offer equal services or facilities to all its vendors without discrimination. The policy would be effective from February 2019.

  • The policy says a vendor will not be permitted to sell more than 25% of its products on an online platform of a single e-marketplace firm. The decision comes against the backdrop of several complaints being flagged by domestic traders on heavy discounts being given by e-commerce players to consumers.


Manufacturing sector clocked 5.6 pc growth during April-Oct

India's manufacturing sector growth as measured by the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with the base year 2011-12 has been consistently increasing over the past three years. 

  • During 2015-16, growth rate in manufacturing sector as per IIP was 2.8 per cent, 4.4 per cent in 2016-17, 4.6 per cent in 2017-18, while 5.6 per cent (provisional) during April-October in the current fiscal, as per the information given by Minister of State for Commerce an Industry CR Chaudhary.

Aadi Sai Vijaykaran created history by winning the Junior Debate Championship at the World Scholar’s Cup held at Yale University, the USA.

Power Ministry decides to make meters smart prepaid in 3 yrs from April 1

The government plans to make all electricity meters smart prepaid in three years in a bid to cut transmission and distribution losses. The Power Ministry has decided to make all meters smart prepaid in three years from April 1, 2019.

  • This step is likely to bring revolution in power sector by way of reduction in Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses, better health of DISCOMs, incentivisation of energy conservation, ease of bill payments and doing away with the paper bills.

Italy's Mount Etna erupts



Italy’s Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano erupted , sending a huge column of ash into the sky and causing the closure of Catania airport on Sicily’s eastern coast.

  • The 3,330 meter high volcano can burst into spectacular action several times a year, spewing lava and ash high over the Mediterranean island. The last major eruption was in 1992.

Investment through P-notes rises to Rs 79247 crore in November

Investments in the Indian capital market through participatory notes climbed to Rs 79,247 crore in November after hitting a nine-and-a-half year low at the end of preceding month.
P-notes are issued by registered foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) to overseas investors who wish to be part of the Indian stock market without registering themselves directly.

  • According to Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) data, the total value of P-note investments in Indian markets- equity, debt, and derivatives rose to Rs 79,247 crore till November-end from Rs 66,587 crore at October-end.

American Shiffrin youngest woman to reach 50 World Cup wins



American Mikaela Shiffrin became the youngest woman to win 50 World Cup ski races with victory in the slalom in the French Alps recently. The 2014 Olympic champion, who led after the first run in Courchevel, finished 0.29sec ahead of Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova and 0.37sec ahead of Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter in third place.

  • Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark holds the record for both men and women with 86 career successes. Shiffrin’s fellow US racer Lindsey Vonn has the most female wins with 82 victories across all five alpine disciplines.

Dronacharya awardee C A Kuttappa has taken over as India's chief boxing coach. The 39-year-old Kuttappa, credited with shaping some of the country's most successful boxers such as Vijender Singh, M Suranjoy Singh and Shiva Thapa among others, took over from veteran coach S R Singh.

Mithali Raj, captain of the Indian women's cricket team and the official ambassador for Rio Tinto's Australian Diamonds programme, was honored with the Senco Gold & Diamonds, Swarna Samman award at a star-studded event held in Kolkata. 

  • Swarna Samman is an annual award by leading retail Jeweller Senco Gold & Diamonds to recognise outstanding achievers in the fields of art, culture and sports. This year Mithali Raj is honoured for her excellence and contribution to women's cricket in India.


Rafi Award Conferred To Laxmikant And Usha Timothy

The Mohammed Rafi Award, instituted by an NGO Spandan Arts headed by Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar, was bestowed upon late music composer Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and playback singer Usha Timothy.

  • Kudalkar, of the Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo, was given the Mohammed Rafi Lifetime Achievement Award consisting of Rs 1 lakh and a trophy.

  • Timothy was honoured with the Mohammed Rafi Award and Rs 51,000 at a programme held in suburban Bandra. 


Sitarist Manju Mehta gets Tansen Samman



Noted sitar player Manju Mehta has been conferred with the 'Tansen Samman' for 2018 by the Madhya Pradesh government for her contribution in the field of music.

  • Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar presented the award to Mehta, 74, at the inaugural ceremony of the Tansen Music Festival in Gwalior.

  • Meanwhile, the 'Raja Mansingh Tomar Honour' was given to the Sankat Mochan Pratishthan in Varanasi for 2017 and the Natrang Pratishthan of New Delhi for 2018. The award is given to institutions for nurturing good music.

  • The Tansen Music Festival is organised every year by the MP culture department in the memory of Tansen, one of the greatest artists in Indian history.

Padma Shri awardee Sulagitti Narasamma passes away at 98



Social worker and Padma Shri awardee Sulagitti Narasamma passed away in BengalurU. She was 98 years old.  She was awarded multiple honours for performing the traditional deliveries during her 70 years of service. The social worker breathed her last at the BGS Hospitals in Bengaluru.

  • In a life that was in all its sense dedicated to social service, Narasamma had helped deliver more than 15,000 babies, free of charge, in Krishnapura, a remote village in Pavagada Taluk in Karnataka.

Memorial For Atal Bihari Vajpayee Inaugurated



Sadaiv Atal, a memorial of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, was dedicated to the nation on his 94th birth anniversary. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi were among the dignitaries who paid floral tributes to the former statesman at the memorial built near the Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, where his funeral took place on August 17.

  • Sadaiv (always) Atal memorial will be managed by a trust headed by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan.


India's longest rail-road bridge inaugurated

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's longest rail-road Bogibeel Bridge, which is expected to reduce the distance between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by around 700 kilometers, and the travel time from 24 hours to merely five hours.

  • The foundation stone of this bridge was laid by late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002 and was inaugurated on his birth anniversary.

  • The overpass is a combined road and rail bridge over the River Brahmaputra. The connectivity is also strategically important for the movement of troops to Arunachal Pradesh bordering China.


25-ft high Vajpayee statue to be installed in Lucknow

A 25 feet high statue of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be installed in the Lok Bhawan in Lucknow, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced. He was speaking at a function held to celebrate the 94th birth anniversary of the late leader.

  • Governor Ram Naik and the Chief Minister led the state in paying tributes to Vajpayee. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Vidhan Sabha Speaker Hriday Narayan Dixit were also present.


Maharashtra launches Vajpayee international schools for rural students

Marking the 94th birth anniversary celebrations of the late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the 'Bharat Ratna Atal Bihar Vajpayee International Schools' for students in mofussil areas.

  • The school is affiliated to the Maharashtra International Education Board (MIEB), in which 13 Zilla Parishad Schools will join initially with the curriculum in the students' mother tongue. The MIEB has been set up by the state government to achieve higher education standards of global standards in the state.


India to be top two scientific nations in world by 2030: Harsh Vardhan

Union Minister for Science and Technology and Environment Harsh Vardhan said India is firmly on its course to become one of the top two scientifically advanced nations in the world by 2030. 

  • The minister said the country has made significant progress in the fields of nano technology, space science under the Narendra Modi government while it is already on the top spot in terms of providing tsunami early warning.


Haryana to rename childcare institutes as Jagannath Ashrams

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced to name all the Child Care Institutes being run in the state as 'Jagannath Ashrams.'

  • The Chief Minister made this announcement while addressing the people during a dance competition organised by women wing of All India Vaish Federation, in Karnal.

Isolated Turkmenistan launches first messaging app

The repressive central Asian nation of Turkmenistan, where the likes of Facebook and Whatsapp are banned launched its first messaging app.

  • The privately developed BizBarde app will "allow the exchange of messagers, files, photos and videos. The application is available via the Google Android platform as well as Apple's iOS and Microsoft Windows.

Lewis Hamilton awarded Drivers' Driver of the Year

After claiming a historic fifth World Drivers' Championship, Lewis Hamilton has added to an ever-growing list of accolades after taking home the inaugural Drivers' Driver of the Year. This was the first time the vote had been run by the F1 bosses, with seventeen of the 20 drivers taking part.

  • Max Verstappen led the charge in second place, after finishing the season with five straight podium finishes. Fernando Alonso took the final step on the podium, despite only scoring 50 points for uncompetitive McLaren team this year.


Arjun Bhati wins US Kids Jr Golf World Championship

India's Arjun Bhati bagged the first position against Americas Aksel Moe during the three-level final match in the US Kids Junior Golf World Championship in Malaysia.

  • Arjun scored a total of 222 points followed by America and Vietnam at 2nd and 3rd position with 225 and 226 points respectively.

The government has appointed P.V. Bharathi as the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Corporation Bank. In another development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has appointed Birupaksha Mishra, GM, Central Bank of India as Executive Director of Corporation Bank.

  • Balakrishna Alse S., GM, Corporation Bank has been appointed as Executive Director of Oriental Bank of Commerce. In addition, the ACC approved the appointment of K. Ramachandran, General Manger, Corporation Bank as Executive Director in Allahabad Bank.

Ex-Union Minister Jai Narain Prasad Nishad passes away   



Former Union Minister Captain Jai Narain Prasad Nishad passed away at the age of 88. Nishad was a former Union Minister and an ex-parliamentarian from Bihar's Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha Constituency.

  • His son Ajay Nishad is an elected Member of Parliament (MP) from Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency itself and belongs to the Bharatiya Janata Party.


Legendary singer Dwijen Mukhopadhyay passes away at 91



Legendary Bengali singer Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, gifted with a resonant voice and considered the last surviving colossus of the golden generation of Rabindra Sangeet, passed away at his Salt Lake residence in Kolkata.

  • He has recorded more than 1500 songs, of which about 800 are songs of Rabindranath Tagore. He bagged the prestigious Padma Bhushan award in 2010.


Bengali writer Nirendranath Chakrabarty passes away



Sahitya Academy Award-winning Bengali writer Nirendranath Chakrabarty, known for his beautiful poetry, passed away at a private hospital in Kolkata.

  • He won the Sahitya Academy Award in 1974 for the book of poems 'Ulanga Raja' (The Naked King).


Veteran CPI (M) leader Nirupam Sen passes away



Veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Nirupam Sen, credited as the architect of West Bengal's industrial drive during the Left Front rule, passed away at a city hospital after a prolonged illness. He was 72. 

  • One of the most prominent faces of the Buddhadeb Bhattacharya cabinet after the CPM-led Left Front was voted to power in 2001, Sen was handed the charge of commerce and industries.

Good Governance Day



 

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's birthday is being celebrated as Good Governance Day across the country on 25 December. The day was established in 2014 to honor the Bharat Ratna by fostering awareness among the people on accountability in Governance and Government.

  • The BJP stalwat had served as the country’s Prime Minister betwen 1998 and 2004. He passed away on August 16 this year at AIIMS in Delhi after prolonged illness.
