India tops in road deaths; globally fatalities increase by 1 lakh in 3 years: WHO report

India continue to have the dubious distinction of registering the highest number of road fatalities across the globe. According to the Global Status Report on Road Safety, India reported a maximum of about 1.51 lakh road deaths in 2016 and globally the toll of road deaths increased from 1.25 million to 1.35 in a span of three years.

  • At this rate, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target 3.6 to halve road traffic deaths by 2020 will not be met. Road traffic injury is now the leading cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29 years, signalling a need for a shift in the current child health agenda, which has largely neglected road safety," the WHO report said.
