Japan gives Rs 6668.46 cr loan for developing projects in India

India will receive loan to the tune of Rs 6668.46 crore from Japan for various development projects. The loan will used to develop the phase two of the Chennai metro project, a dairy development project and a programme for Japan-India cooperative actions towards Sustainable Development Goals in India.

  • Ambassador of Japan to India Kenji Hiramatsu and Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India Dr.C.S. Mohapatra signed and exchanged notes here concerning the provision of three yen loan projects (total loan provision of up to JPY 105.497 billion, approximately INR 6,668.465 crore).

  • Japanese Official Development Assistance (ODA) Loan commitment to India reached JPY 421.955 billion, approximately INR 26,671.776 crore and the all-time-high in FY2018. India is the largest recipient country of Japanese ODA Loan in FY2018 as well as in FY2017 on the commitment basis.

15th Global SME Business Summit in New Delhi

The 15th edition of a two day Global SME Business Summit was organised by the Ministry of MSME and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in association with Government e-marketplace in New Delhi.

  • The agenda of the summit was to bring together renowned speakers with unbounded experience and expertise, a global audience, and various national and international SME stakeholders to integrate Indian MSMEs into the Global Value Chains (GVCs).

  • The theme of the event was ‘Building Partnerships through Global Value Chains.’


Union Minister inaugurates Atal Complex for ITCOocean

Addressing scientists after inaugurating the Atal Complex for the International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) at the INCOIS campus in Hyderabad, Union Earth Sciences, Environment and Forests Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan said India is playing a key role in the efforts that are being made to address the global environmental concerns.

  • The ITCOocean is a Category 2 centre under UNESCO for capacity building and training activities in operational oceanography.


Efficiency gap in India’s power sector costs 4% of GDP: World Bank Report

The World Bank recently released a report titled ‘In the Dark: How Much Do Power Sector Distortions Cost South Asia’. As per the report, Efficiency gap in India’s power sector costs the Indian economy 4% every year, which equivalents to $86 billion in 2016FY. 

  • "India achieved 100 per cent village electrification in 2018. But at the household level, its rural access rate, at 81 per cent in 2017, is still the third-lowest in South Asia," the report said. Although the power deficit in the country has been substantially reduced over the last few years, the reliability of electricity is still low compared with global standards.


India perceives poorly, 12th on 'misperception index'

According to the MORI Perils of Perception Survey 2018, done by Ipsos India, an independent market research company, Indians stood at 12th rank in the "misperception index", behind several countries like, Italy, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea, Chile and Argentina, among others.

  • The countries which performed poorer than India were Thailand, Mexico, Turkey, Malaysia, and Brazil, which were ranked first in five, in that order.

Belgium to end the year as No.1 in FIFA global rankings

Belgium will end the year as No. 1 ahead of world champions France in the global rankings released by FIFA recently.

  • Belgium, beaten by France in the World Cup semi-finals, edge Didier Deschamps' team by one ranking point. Belgium have 1,727 points by FIFA's calculations to 1,726 for France. Brazil are third on 1,676.

National Mathematics Day



Every year, the country celebrates National Mathematics Day on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.

  • In 1917, Ramanujan was elected to be a member of the London Mathematical Society. In 1918, he also became a Fellow of the Royal Society, becoming the youngest person to achieve the feat.
