Cyril Ramaphosa to be India's chief guest at 2019 Republic Day celebration



South African President Cyril Ramaphosa will be the Chief Guest at the 2019 Republic Day celebration in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs said. The announcement comes more than a month after US President Donald Trump declined India's invite to be the chief guest at Republic Day.

  • Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, "President Ramaphosa accepted India's invitation to be the Chief Guest at Republic Day during 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi."

Asia Pacific Summit-2018 begins in Kathmandu

The Asia Pacific Summit-2018 began in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The theme of two-day Summit is "Addressing the Critical Challenges of Our Time: Interdependence, Mutual Prosperity, and Universal Values".

  • Around 1500 participants from 45 countries, including India, attending the summit. They will discuss various global issues, including peace, development, good governance and role of parliamentarians, climate change and role of media.


Rajnath Singh inaugurates 19th Hornbill festival in Nagaland

In Nagaland, the 19th edition of the Hornbill Festival 2018 began with a colourful extravaganza of music and dance. Inaugurating the opening ceremony, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh conveyed his greetings to the people of Nagaland on the occasion of Statehood Day on 1 December.

  • On the 55th Anniversary of the State, he called upon the people to stride for rapid economic growth and be contributors in making India a world power.


Rajnath Singh announces special women-safety feature in pan-India emergency app

With women's safety in mind, Home Minister Rajnath Singh announced a pan-India single-number "112" under an emergency mobile app. It will have a special women safety feature to get immediate assistance from police and volunteers. 

  • Launching the Emergency Response Support System, ERSS, in Nagaland, Mr Singh said a 'SHOUT' feature has been made available exclusively for women in the mobile app. It is connected to ERSS.

  • The ERSS has been integrated with police, fire, health and women helpline numbers to provide emergency services through the emergency number '112'.


Country's first owl festival organized in Pune

The Indian Owl Festival, the country’s first owl fest, was held at Pingori village in Purandar taluka of Pune from November 29. The two-day festival, organised by Ela Foundation, an NGO working towards nature education and conservation.

  • It is a first-of-its-kind festival in the country that is being organised with the intention of creating awareness about owl as a bird and debunking numerous superstitions associated with it.

Australia Become 1st Country To Recognise 'Orphanage Trafficking' As Slavery

Australia has become the first country in the world to recognise so-called orphanage trafficking as a form of modern-day slavery. The legislation forms part of a wider drive to stop Australians taking part in "voluntourism" schemes which harm rather than help the children.

  • A report by ReThink Orphanages found more than 57% of Australian universities advertise orphanage placements, with 14% of Australian schools visiting, volunteering or fundraising for institutions abroad.


3rd ASEAN – India Business Summit (AIBS) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The 3rd ASEAN - India Business Summit (AIBS), conclave organized under the aegis of Ministry of International Trade and Industries conducted its annual achievements awards ceremony at the St. Regis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The ceremony was presided by the Malaysian Minister of International Trade and Industry YB Datuk Ignatius Darell Leiking.

  • Spice Garden group of restaurants owner Mr. Pardeep Batra received the special ASEAN - India Achievement award for the businessman of year.

Microsoft passes Apple to become world's most valuable company

Microsoft has overtaken Apple in market cap value for the first time in eight years. Microsoft briefly reached a market cap value of $812.93 billion, followed by Apple at a market cap of $812.60 billion.

  • It made Microsoft the world’s most valuable company, even if it was only a temporary title. Microsoft and Apple are now trading back and forth for the title.

Vinesh, Sakshi win gold at wrestling nationals



Vinesh Phogat announced her return from injury after a successful day out by grabbing the 57 kilogram title while Sakshi Malik emerged the champion in the 62 kg on the second day of the Tata Motors Senior Womens National Championship in Gond, U.P.

Raninder Singh becomes first Indian to be elected ISSF vice-president



Raninder Singh has become the first Indian to be elected one of the four vice-presidents of the International Shooting Sport Federation. The 51-year-old Raninder also heads the National Rifle Association of India.

  • He was presented with the diploma and medal by the outgoing longest serving president of the ISSF, Olegario Vazquez Rana.

NGT appoints former HC judge U C Dhyani to monitor Ganga cleaning

The National Green Tribunal has appointed former Uttarakhand High Court judge, Justice U C Dhyani, as head of the three-member committee to oversee rejuvenation work of the Ganga river.

  • A bench headed by chairperson A K Goel had earlier named Justice Arun Tandon as head of the panel.

  • The green panel had passed a slew of directions to rejuvenate the Ganga, declaring as 'No Development Zone' an area of 100 metres from the edge of the river, between Haridwar and Unnao.

Abhinav Bindra Conferred With Shooting’s Highest Honour By ISSF

India’s Olympic and world champion shooter Abhinav Bindra has been conferred the sport’s highest honour for his outstanding services as the chairman of the International Shooting Sport Federation’s Athletes Committee. 

  • Bindra was succeeded in the post by the legendary American shooter Kimberly Rhode.










OBITUARIES


Former US President George H W Bush passes away at 94



The 41st President of the United States of America, George H W Bush, passed away on November 30. He held his post from 1989 and 1993 and steered the foreign policy of the United States in the face of the collapse of the The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). He was a World War II veteran and was wheel-chair bound in his last days.








IMPORTANT DAYS


World AIDS Day

World AIDS Day is observed on December 1 every year. The day is dedicated to spreading awareness about the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) which is spread by infection from a virus called human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

  • The day is marked by the World Health Organisation as a global public health campaign. The theme of this year is “Know Your Status”.


Armed Forces Week being celebrated from Dec 1 to Dec 7



Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has appealed the people of the country to participate in the Armed Forces Week 2018 which is beginning from 1 December and will conclude on 7 December.

  • The Defence Minister called upon people to show the support to the soldiers by wearing the Armed Forces Flag and celebrating the Armed Forces Week 2018 with enthusiasm.
