Maldives President arrives in India



Maldives' new President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih arrived in New Delhi on a three-day state visit during which he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. 

  • Solih, who surprisingly defeated Maldivian strongman Abdulla Yameen in polls in September, arrived in  New Delhi on his first foreign visit after assuming office and was received by Union minister Hardeep S Puri.


India's IDRSS to be satellite communication hub in sky

As part of its proposed manned space mission, India will launch the Indian Data Relay Satellite System (IDRSS) to improve data relay and communication links with its remote sensing/earth observation satellites. 

  • The two-satellite IDRSS will maintain continuous communication link with India's remote sensing/earth observation satellites and also with the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) that would carry three Indian astronauts to the space in 2022. 

  • ISRO is planning to launch two satellites under IDRSS. The first one is expected to be launched in 2019.

Bhupesh Baghel announced as Chhattisgarh chief minister



Bhupesh Baghel is the new Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. Being the state's Congress chief, he led the party in Chhattisgarh from the front. After mulling over various options for the past four days, Rahul Gandhi led Congress decided on the name of Baghel.

  • The final announcement was made after the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting which took place in Raipur. Congress's state in-charge for party affairs PL Punia had informed that the new chief minister would take oath in Raipur on 17 October.

Govt forms 7-member panel under BBB to select MD for PSU insurance firms

The government has constituted a seven-member panel to select managing directors of public sector insurance companies. The panel would be headed by Banks Board Bureau (BBB) chairman B P Sharma. 

  • The other members of the panel are Financial Services Secretary, Department of Public Enterprises Secretary and Chairman of Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India.

  • Besides, three insurance sector experts G N Bajpai, Mathew Varghese and T Bhargava have been appointed on the selection panel.

PV Sindhu becomes first Indian to lift Badminton World Federation World Tour Finals title



Ace Indian shuttler P V Sindhu lifted the prestigious season-ending World Tour Finals trophy at Guangzhou, China. The Olympic silver medallist defeated Japan's Nozomi Okuhara 21-19, 21-17 in the summit clash. 

  • Sindhu accomplished the feat after losing seven successive summit clashes. She had also won silvers at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Championships this year.

Sri Lanka: Wickremesinghe takes oath as Prime Minister



United National Party (UNP) leader Ranil Wickremesinghe was swore-in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka. This comes after disputed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who was appointed by President Sirisena on October 26 after ousting Wickremesinghe, resigned from his post. 








OBITUARIES


Malayalam film director Ajayan passes away



Ajayan, noted film maker and director of classic Malayalam movie Perumthachan, passed away at Thiruvananthapuram. Ajayan had directed the movie Perumthachan, scripted by MT Vasudevan Nair, in 1990. 

  • He won both the national award for debutant director and state award for debutant director for the movie. Also Perumthachan won the award for most popular movie in 1990.
