Climate Change Performance Index: Sweden tops in the Ranking, India at 11th position

The Climate Change Performance Index was released on the sidelines of COP24 Un Summit in Katowice, Poland. U.S. dropped from 56th to 59th place due to high emissions and poor ratings for the federal government’s policies.

  • No countries in the top three ranks because none does well in all categories assessed but Sweden took the best spot, fourth, as last year, while Morocco's efforts to ramp up renewable energy pushed it up a notch to fifth place.

  • India moves to rank 11 as a result of an improved performance in renewable energy, comparatively low levels of per capita emissions and a relatively ambitious mitigation target for 2030.

OPEC keeps forecast for Global Economic Growth in 2018 unchanged at 3.7 %: Report

The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has not revised its forecast for global economic growth, and it remains at 3.7 per cent for 2018 and at 3.5 per cent for the next year, OPEC said in its Monthly Oil Market Report.

  • India's and China's growth forecasts remain unchanged at 7.5 percent and 6.5 percent for 2018, and at 7.2 percent and 6.1 percent for 2019 respectively.

ADB retains India FY19 growth forecast at 7.3% despite downside risks

The Asian Development Bank retained India's economic growth forecast at 7.3 per cent for the current fiscal and 7.6 per cent for 2019-20, despite downside risks posed by stress in the non-banking sector, limited fiscal space as well as escalating trade tensions.

  • The country's GDP growth moderated to 7.1 per cent in second quarter of 2018-19 from 8.2 per cent in the first quarter, averaging 7.6 per cent growth in the first half, the ADB said in its a supplement report to 'Asian Development Outlook (ADO) 2018 Update'.

K Chandrasekhar Rao takes oath as Telangana CM

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao took oath as the Chief Minister of Telangana. It will be his second inning as the state chief minister. Governor ESL Narasimhan administered him the oath of office and secrecy at the Raj Bhavan. 

  • TRS emerged victorious in the Telangana Assembly elections bagging 88 seats in the state assembly of 119-member.


Zoramthanga To Be Sworn In As Mizoram CM



Mizoram Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan invited Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga to form the government. The 74-year-old Zoramthanga, who was Chief Minister for two terms from 1998-2008, had staked claim to form the government after his party won 26 Assembly seats in the 40-member Mizoram House.

  • Outgoing Congress Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla had submitted his resignation.


Kamal Nath To Be New CM of Madhya Pradesh

Kamal Nath will be the next chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. The announcement has finally come two days after the Congress won a handsome victory in the Madhya Pradesh assembly election.

International Day of Neutrality

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on 2 February 2017, declaring 12 December as the International Day of Neutrality. The resolution was introduced by Turkmenistan, recognized by the world body as a permanently neutral state since 12 December 1995.

  • In international law, a neutral country is a sovereign state that abstains from all participation in a war between other states and maintains an attitude of impartiality toward the belligerents.
