HUA launches 'Angikaar campaign', to bring PMAY(U) beneficiaries into Ujjawala, Ayushman Bharat fold
The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry launched the 'Angikaar campaign', a move aimed at bringing beneficiaries of PMAY (urban) into the fold of other central schemes such as Ujjawala and Ayushman Bharat.
  • At an event, Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the convergence would especially focus on Ujjwala for gas connection and Ayushman Bharat for health insurance to the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana(U).
HM Amit Shah flags off battery operated electric buses in Ahmedabad, first only India operated
Union Home Minister Amit Shah flagged off battery operated 8 electric buses for Janmarg Bus Rapid Transit System -BRTS route in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
  • He said that electric buses have been introduced in some other cities also but in case of Ahmedabad, it is for the first time that completely India-made electric buses have been put on roads.
  • He said that battery charging facilities for electric vehicles will come up in future like petrol pumps. This would not just reduce pollution but also bring qualitative change in the life of people.
Maharashtra: Lifeline Express inaugurated at CSMT, Mumbai
The Lifeline Express, also known as "Hospital on Wheels", has been inaugurated at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus by the Central Railway (CR) for its latest project, which involves providing medical treatment to poor patients.
  • The Indian Railways, in partnership with Impact India Foundation, had launched the Lifeline Express - the world's first hospital on wheels - on July 16, 1991 from CSMT to provide free of cost medical care to the poor living in remote corners of the country. The seven coaches of the Lifeline Express have advanced operation theatres, a pathology lab, a mammography unit, a gynaecology examination room, a dental unit, a pharmacy, consultation cubicles and X-Ray unit, among others.
Bihar govt bans pan masala containing magnesium carbonate
Bihar government banned Pan Masala containing magnesium carbonate in the state, said commissioner of food safety.
  • 20 samples of different Pan Masala brands were collected and it was found that all of them consisted of magnesium carbonate.
  • "Manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation or sale of Pan Masala containing magnesium carbonate is completely banned in the state," he added.
Assam govt. releases National Register of Citizens (NRC)
The Assam government has finally released the final version of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam. The final NRC has left out over 19 lakh people in Assam who now face the danger of being declared illegal migrants if they don't contest their exclusion.
  • Announcing the final NRC list, the government said a total of 3.29 crore people had applied for the NRC, of which 3.11 were found to be eligible to be included in the final list.
CBDT notifies creation of five-member special cell for startups
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) notified the creation of a five-member special cell to address grievances of startups with relation to angel tax and other tax-related issues.
  • An order issued by the CBDT said the 'startup cell' will be headed by the member (Income Tax and Computerisation) of the board.

ADB President Nakao pledges USD 12 billion support to govt’s initiatives
Asian Development Bank, ADB, President Takehiko Nakao met Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to India and pledged to support the government’s new flagship initiatives.
  • The ADB committed USD 12 billion to the government’s new flagship initiatives like piped water for all (Jal Jeevan Mission) and road safety over the next three years.
  • Nakao said, ADB expects the country’s growth in 2019 at 7.0 per cent and in 2020 at 7.2 per cent, despite downside risks in the global economy.
Economy slumps to 7-year low, GDP growth slows to 5 pc in Q1 FY20
The economic growth slowed to a seven-year low of 5 per cent in April to June quarter from 8 per cent a year ago, government data showed.
  • The slowdown was largely due to a sharp dip in the manufacturing sector and agriculture output, said the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation in a statement.
GDP growth expected to be between 6.5 % and 7% in current fiscal: Debroy
Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), Bibek Debroy said that the country's real GDP growth is expected to be between 6.5 and 7.0 in 2019-20 and several reform measures introduced by the government were meant to boost growth.

Mumbai has been ranked as the 45th safest city on the Safe Cities Index (SCI), while Delhi stood at the 52nd position, according to a report by Economist Intelligence Unit.
  • Cities in the Asia-Pacific (Apac) region made up six of the top-10 safest cities with Tokyo taking the top spot.
  • Along with Tokyo, Apac cities dominated the SCI 2019. Singapore and Osaka came second and third.
Government-e-Marketplace signs MoU with SIDBI
Government e Marketplace has signed an MoU with Small Industries Development Bank of India. The MoU aims to benefit MSMEs, women entrepreneurs, Self Help Groups, Women Self Help Groups and various loan beneficiaries under MUDRA and Stand-up India scheme.

Noida girls' Maitri mobile app win tech prize in US
Five girls in Noida have developed a mobile App that connects children at orphanages with senior citizens in old-age homes, with their innovation fetching them a bronze medal at a global tech competition in the US.

Centre releases Rs 47,436 crore to various states for afforestation
The Centre released Rs 47,436 crore to various states in a major boost towards promoting afforestation and achieving green objectives in the country. The money is released under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).
  • The money will be utilised for compensatory afforestation, catchment area treatment, wildlife management, assisted natural regeneration and forest fire prevention and control operations.
Centre approves Gorewada International Zoo in Nagpur
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the approval for the new Gorewada International Zoo to be inaugurated in Nagpur district of Maharashtra.

Modi launches 10 AYUSH health, wellness centres in Haryana
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 10 AYUSH health and wellness centres in Haryana. The centres are in line with the Ministry of AYUSH's commitment to making 12,500 AHWCs functional in the next three years.
  • The main focus of these AYUSH centres would be empowering the community for 'self-care' by imbibing AYUSH-based healthy food and lifestyle, social behaviour and use of medicinal plants for primary healthcare.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took the lead to launch the campaign of Fit India Movement which has been launched in the country by the Prime Minister.
  • The Chief Minister took a two-kilometer walk from his residential quarters to his office chamber at Main Secretariat, Shillong launching the #WalktoWorkMeghalaya which is a part of the ‘Fit India Campaign’.
Haryana CM launches Mukhyamantri Parivar Samridhi Yojana
Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar launched Mukhyamantri Parivar Samridhi Yojana from Red Bishop, Panchkula.
  • The scheme is being launched with a vision of Surakshit Parivar, Shashakt Parivar, Samridh Parivar, to provide social security to lakhs of families in the state.
  • In order to provide social security benefits to eligible families, the state government is starting this important scheme to provide people with the facility of Life Insurance or Accidental Insurance, Crop Insurance and Pension related benefits.

T.N.’s Dindigul lock and Kandangi saree get GI tag
Two well-known products from Tamil NaduDindigul lock and Kandangi saree — have been given the Geographical Indication (GI) tag by The Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.
  • The Dindigul locks are known throughout the world for their superior quality and durability, so much so that even the city is called Lock City. Government institutions such as prisons, godowns, hospitals, and even temples use these locks instead of other machine-made ones.
  • The Kandangi sarees are manufactured in the entire Karaikudi taluk in Sivaganga district. They are characterised by large contrast borders and some are known to have borders covering as far as two-thirds of the saree which is usually around 5.10 m-5.60 m in length.
Nepal, India introduce friendship bus service between Kathmandu and Siliguri
A private transport company in Kathmandu has started a deluxe bus service for Siliguri in West Bengal. It will leave Kathmandu at 3 pm (local time) and reach Siliguri via Kakkarvitta-Panitanki along the Indo-Nepal border next day at around 11 am.

Kerala, TN, Himachal top India’s child well-being index, says report
Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry topped the charts in the child well-being index, a tool designed to measure and tracks children’s well-being comprehensively. Meghalaya, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh featured at the bottom, as per a report released by the non government organisation World Vision India and research institute IFMR LEAD. The report is an attempt to look at how India fairs on child well-being using a composite child well-being index.

Rare tarantula sighted in Villupuram district
In an interesting find, researchers have sighted a critically endangered species of tarantula for the first time beyond its known habitat in the Eastern Ghats.
  • The spider belonging to the genus Poecilotheria, commonly known as the Peacock Parachute Spider or Gooty Tarantula was spotted by a team of researchers of the Puducherry-based Indigenous Biodiversity Foundation (IBF) in the Pakkamalai Reserve Forests near Gingee in Villupuram district.

Pakistan 'successfully' tests Ghaznavi ballistic missile
Pakistan has successfully carried out a night training launch of 290-km range surface-to-surface ballistic missile Ghaznavi. Ghaznavi was developed after studying Chinese M-11 missiles, which were delivered to Pakistan in 1987.

10 public sector banks to be merged into four
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a big consolidation of public sector banks:
  • PNB, OBC and United Bank to be merged (PNB will be the anchor bank). Consolidated PNB+OBC+United Bank to be 2nd largest PSB with Rs 18 lakh crore business and 2nd largest branch network in India. PNB will be the anchor bank in this merger.
  • Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank to be merged. Canara Bank will be the anchor lender.
  • Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank and Corporate Bank to be merged. Consolidated Union+Andhra+Corporation Banks to be 5th largest PSB with Rs 14.6L Cr. business & 4th largest branch network in India. Union Bank of India will be anchor lender in the this merger.
  • Indian Bank to be merged with Allahabad Bank. Consolidated Indian & Allahabad Banks to be 7th largest PSB with Rs 8.08 lakh crore business.
  • After the merger, the number of India’s public sector banks drops to 12 from 27 earlier. Earlier, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank were also merged with Bank of Baroda which came into effect from April 1, 2019.

Govt extends CBDT Chairman Mody's tenure
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved "re-appointment" of Pramod Chandra Mody as the Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes for a period of one year. Mody was to retire on August 31.

ICRA sacks its MD and CEO Naresh Takkar
Moody’s India unit ICRA Ltd (Investment Information and Credit Rating Agency of India Limited) has ousted its Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer Naresh Takkar, nearly three months after the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) received an anonymous complaint alleging misconduct at the credit rating agency under him.
  • On July 1, Takkar was asked to proceed on leave until further notice.
