Manipur enters India’s railway map as first passenger train reaches the state
A passenger train – Rajdhani Express from Assam’s Silchar railway station - reached the Vaingaichunpao railway station in Manipur for a trial run, putting the state on the Indian Railways map.
  • According to reports, the train covered the distance of 11 km between the two northeastern stations, with railway officials onboard.
NTPC REL to set up India’s first green Hydrogen Mobility project in Ladakh
State-run power giant NTPC said its arm, NTPC REL, will set up the country’s first green Hydrogen Mobility project in Ladakh.
  • According to the statement, the signing of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was also marked with the inauguration of NTPC’s first solar installations in Leh in the form of solar trees and a solar carport.
  • The MoU will enable NTPC to help Ladakh develop a carbon-free economy based on renewable sources and green hydrogen.
IIT Madras and Sony India to host national-level hackathon
The IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation (IITM-PTF) is collaborating with Sony India Software Centre Pvt. Ltd. to conduct a National hackathon called ‘SAMVEDAN 2021 – Sensing Solutions for Bharat’ to inspire citizens to solve India-specific problems of societal interest using IoT sensor board.
  • The challenge will be held in three stages quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals. A total of 75 ideas will be selected for the quarter-finals, and among them, 25 best ideas will be selected for the semi-finals. There will be seven finalists with prizes for every finalist. Prizes worth 3 Lakhs will be awarded to the best teams.
Manipur CM N. Biren Singh launches various welfare schemes implemented under NABARD
Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh launched various welfare schemes implemented under NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) through video conferencing in Imphal.
  • The schemes include Comprehensive Scheme for development of MSCB Ltd. and PACS (Primary Agriculture Co-operative Societies) in Manipur, infrastructure support to 10 PACS and two TDF projects in Churachandpur and Pherzwal district.
  • The financial support of Rs 10 lakh to 10 PACS sanctioned under MSCB Ltd would strengthen the basic infrastructure such as office furniture, PoS machines and software.
Ladakh signs MoU with Sikkim to turn the UT into organic entity
Ladakh administration has signed an MoU with Sikkim State Organic Certification Agency (SOCCA) to turn the Union Territory into an organic entity.
  • A tripartite MoU has been signed between Ladakh and SSOCA regarding the implementation of Prampragat Krishi Vikas Yojana and Mission Organic Development Initiative (MODI) in the Ladakh region with the aim to convert Ladakh into organic entity by 2025.
  • The main objective of this MoU is to get the organic certification after a tie-up with the Centre.

In a first, Himalayan Yaks to be insured
The high-altitude yak, feeling the climate change heat across the Himalayan belt, will now be insured.
  • The National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY) at Dirang in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district has tied up with the National Insurance Company Ltd. for insuring their livestock.
  • The insurance policy would shield the yak owners against the risks posed by weather calamities, diseases, in-transit mishaps, surgical operations and strikes or riots.

APEDA inks MoU with NAFED for strengthening export linkage of Farmer Cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organizations
Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, APEDA signed an MoU with National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd, NAFED for strengthening export linkage of farmer cooperatives and Farmer Producer Organisation, FPOs.
  • The key areas of cooperation include facilitating APEDA registered exporters getting assistance under all the government schemes implemented through NAFED.

Mithali Raj Loses Top Spot to Stafanie Taylor in ICC ODI Batters' Rankings
India captain and star batter Mithali Raj was dethroned from the top spot by West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor in the latest ICC ODI rankings.
  • Taylor recaptured the number one position in batting as well as in the list of all-rounders after a superb effort in the first ODI in Coolidge that helped the West Indies win by five wickets against Pakistan.
India Announced as Hosts for 2026 Badminton World Championships
India will host the World Badminton Championships in 2026, the sport’s global governing body, BWF, said.
  • India were scheduled to organise the Sudirman Cup in 2023 but the Badminton World Federation decided to award the hosting rights of the world mixed team championships to China.
  • The BWF was forced to shift this year’s Sudirman Cup from Suzhou, China to Vantaa, Finland due to the COVID-19 situation in the Asian country.
Pacer Pankaj Singh announces retirement from all forms of cricket  
Former India and Rajasthan pacer Pankaj Singh announced retirement from all forms of cricket.
  • The 36-year-old played for India in two Tests and one ODI in his career. He made his Test debut against England in 2014 while his first game in international cricket had come in 2010.
  • The former India pacer played 117 first-class games and picked 472 wickets.The right-arm fast bowler was also a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Deepak Kabra becomes first Indian gymnastics judge at Olympics
Deepak Kabra has become the first Indian to be selected for judging the gymnastics competition of the Olympic Games, a life goal achieved for the man who knew he wouldn't have made it there as an active gymnast because of his not-so-strong fundamentals.
  • Kabra will be seen officiating the men's artistic gymnasts at the Tokyo Games, which gets underway on July 23.

Ethiopia PM Abiy's party wins landslide victory in election
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's Prosperity Party won the most seats in Ethiopia's parliamentary election, the election board said, a victory that assures him another term in office.
  • Abiy's party won 410 of 436 parliamentary seats, election board deputy chairperson Woubshet Ayele told a news conference in the capital Addis Ababa.
Sher Bahadur Deuba Replaces KP Sharma Oli to Become Nepal's PM for 5th Time
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba became the country's Prime Minister for the fifth time, media reports said. President Bidya Devi Bhandari appointed him in accordance with Article 76(5) of the Constitution.
  • This is the fifth time that 74-year-old Deuba is returning to power as the Prime Minister of Nepal. His appointment is in line with the ruling issued by the Supreme Court to make way for his claim to premiership, replacing incumbent K P Sharma Oli.
UNICEF Chief Henrietta Fore Resigns for Family Health Issue
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has accepted the resignation of Henrietta Fore as executive director of UNICEF with deep regret, praising her inspiring leadership as head of the UN children's agency.
  • Ms. Fore, an American public health and international development executive who was the first woman to head the U.S. Agency for International Development took up the leadership of UNICEF on Jan. 1, 2018.

The Amir Khan starrer controversial movie 'PK', which released in 2014 and got mired in controversy over hurting religious sentiments of Hindus, has been added to the collection of the National Film Archives of India (NFAI).
  • The original camera negative of Rajkumar Hirani directed film has been added by the NFAI in its collection.
Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo wins Euro 2020 Golden Boot
Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo claimed his first European Championship Golden Boot as EURO 2020 concluded with Italy emerging as the champion.
  • Ronaldo had scored in every single group stage game for Portugal, bagging a brace against both Hungary and France. However, he had failed to find the back of the net during the 0-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.
Om Cheri N. N. Pillai receives Bahrain Keralite Society Literary Award
Journalist and playwright Omchery N N Pillai has been selected for the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam (BKS)’s Literary Award for 2021.
  • The award constitutes a cash prize of `50,000 and a citation acknowledging the achievement. The award ceremony will be held later in Delhi.
  • His enormous contributions as a whole to Malayalam language and literature are remarkable, which ultimately led to this award.

NTPC to set up India’s single largest solar park at Rann of Kutch in Gujarat
National Thermal Power Corporation, NTPC will set up India’s single largest solar park at Rann of Kutch in Khavada, Gujarat.
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said, NTPC will set up 4750 Mega Watt renewable energy park.
  • As a part of its green energy portfolio augmentation, NTPC Limited, India’s largest energy integrated company aims to build 60 Giga Watt renewable energy capacity by 2032.
Indian Navy Receives 10th Anti-submarine Warfare Aircraft P-8I from Boeing
The Indian Navy has received the 10th anti-submarine warfare aircraft P-8I from the US-based aerospace company Boeing.
  • The Defence Ministry had first signed a contract for eight P-8I aircraft in 2009. Later, in 2016, it signed a contract for four additional P-8I aircraft.
  • The patrol aircraft is an integral part of the Indian Navy’s fleet and has surpassed 30,000 flight hours since it was inducted in 2013.

Former WWE Wrestler ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Paul Orndorff passes away
The renowned American professional wrestler, Paul Orndorff, who is best known with his nickname Mr. Wonderful, has passed away.He was 71.
  • He was one of professional wrestling’s biggest stars of the 1980s and was famous for his appearances with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) and World Championship Wrestling (WCW). He retired in 2000. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

  • The Book is Published By Harpercollins India. The Struggle Within: A Memoir of the Emergency book deals with one of independent India’s darkest hours during the emergency period. The Emergency (1975-1977) was one of independent India’s darkest hours. In that period, Over 150,000 people were imprisoned without trial; as many as eleven million forcibly sterilized, and countless killed in police firings or otherwise eliminated.
