Govt announces special economic & comprehensive package of Rs. 29.87 lakh under Atma Nirbhar Bharat: FM
Government had announced a special economic and comprehensive package of 29.87 lakh crore rupees under Atma Nirbhar Bharat during last financial year.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the aim of this package was to combat the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country.
  • She said that the Government has announced a number of measures to support broad based and inclusive economic development including a 34.5 percent increase in capital expenditure and 137 percent increase in health expenditure in the current Union Budget.
Govt to set up National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming & Comics
The Union Government has decided to set up a National Centre of Excellence for Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics for creating a world-class talent pool in India to cater to the Indian as well as global industry.
  • It will be set up in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
UNCDF launches initiative to address challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Asia, Africa
The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) in partnership with Atal Innovation Mission - NITI Aayog, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rabo Foundation has launched the Agritech Challenge 2021, which aims to help address challenges faced by smallholder farmers across Asia and Africa.
  • The challenge will help address challenges faced by smallholder farmers around productivity, climate change and supply chain, by also working alongside International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Bayer as partners, UNCDF said.
  • Through this challenge, UNCDF will also enable cross-border collaborations among emerging markets across India, Indonesia, Malawi, Malaysia, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia among others.
Centre accredits 236 academies across country under Khelo India Scheme
The Centre has accredited a total of 236 academies across the country under Khelo India Scheme for the training of the Khelo India Athletes.
  • Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Anurag Singh Thakur informed that, the initiative of Khelo India envisages support to national, regional and state sports academies.
  • He said, under this scheme, 360 Khelo India Centres (KICs) and 24 Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) have been notified.
Govt to set up Centre for Bio-Resources & Sustainable Development in Northeast
Ministry of Science and Technology will set up a first-of-its-kind Centre of Excellence in the Northeast.
  • The prestigious project for establishing Centre for Bio-Resources and Sustainable Development as a Centre of Excellence was sanctioned by the Department of Biotechnology and is complete for formal inauguration shortly.
  • The location of the project is at Kimin in district Papum Pare in Arunachal Pradesh. The construction of the new building as well other infrastructure has been completed.
IPC, WHO sign MoU for promotion of diversity and equity
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) signed an agreement to work together to foster diversity and equity through global initiatives promoting health and sport for everybody, everywhere.
  • The two partners will collaborate to improve global access to quality rehabilitation and assistive technology as part of universal health coverage; and mitigate existing inequalities in relation to access to these life-changing services - a prerequisite for equal opportunities and participation in sports for persons with disabilities, including for Paralympians and Para athletes.

Typhoon In-fa disrupts life in Eastern China
Typhoon In-fa has moved to Shanghai and continued to lash the city after making landfall at the nearby island-city of Zhoushan.
  • The meteorological authority said the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu, as well as Shanghai municipality, all in eastern China, will be continually affected by heavy winds and torrential rains over the next couple of days.
  • The storm has destroyed more than 4,700 trees on the streets, according to local governments


BANKING & FINANCE

NCGTC issues guidelines for Rs 50,000-cr credit guarantee scheme for medical infra
In a bid to improve medical infrastructure in non-metros, the National Credit Guarantee Trustee Company Ltd (NCGTC) issued operational guidelines for the Rs 50,000-crore credit guarantee scheme announced as part of Rs 6.29-lakh-crore stimulus package last month by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • The loans under the Loan Guarantee Scheme for Covid Affected Sectors (LGSCAS) would be available at a concessional rate of not more than 7.95 per cent, as was announced by the financial minister and later approved by the Union Cabinet.
  • While announcing the scheme, Sitharaman had said, "A maximum loan of Rs 100 crore will be given with a capped interest rate of 7.95 per cent (for healthcare projects) and guarantee provided for three years. Without a guarantee, it would have cost 10-11 per cent.
  • The scheme would be applicable to all eligible loans sanctioned during the period from May 7, 2021, till March 31, 2022, or till guarantees for an amount of Rs 50,000 crore are issued under the scheme, whichever is earlier.

GE, Intel join hands with SERB for fundamental research
US-headquartered multinationals, GE and Intel, have (separately) joined hands with Government of India’s research funding agency Science and Technology Research Board (SERB), to conduct fundamental research in the areas of the companies’ interest.
  • This joint collaboration is under SERB’s latest initiative called Fund for Industry Research Engagement (FIRE)--an umbrella program under which industry and SERB issue calls for proposals for scientists to take up specific research projects.

Indian junior wrestler Priya Malik wins gold medal in 73-kg category Cadet World Championship
Indian junior wrestler Priya Malik won a gold medal in the 73-kg category Cadet World Championship held in Budapest, Hungary.
  • Jaskaran Singh won a silver medal in the 60-kg freestyle category, after he lost to Kamronbek Kadamov of Uzbekistan.
  • The Cadet World Championship is a tournament where the best Greco-Roman, Freestyle and Women wrestlers worldwide below the age of 17 compete.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa resigns
Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has submitted his resignation to Governor Thawarchand Gehlot in Bengaluru.
  • The BJP Government led by Yediyurappa in Karnataka completes two years on July 26,2021. Before submitting his resignation letter, Yediyurappa made the announcement to resign at the Sadhana Samavesha which was organised to mark the completion of two years of his Government.
Manipur Govt to appoint Olympic Silver Medalist Mirabai Chanu as ASP (Sports)
In Manipur, the State Government has decided to appoint Olympic Silver Medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu as Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports) in the Police Department.
  • Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced that Mirabai Chanu would also be rewarded with one crore rupees as announced by the government earlier.
  • He said that all the Tokyo Olympic participants from Manipur would be given 25 lakh rupees each.And Olympian Judoka Likmabam Sushila Devi would be promoted from the post of Constable to Sub-Inspector.

Kakatiya Rudreshwara Temple, Telangana inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site
India gets its 39th World Heritage Site. The Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple, Telangana has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • The decision was taken at the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO
  • The Rudreswara temple was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya empire by Recharla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and worshipped by devotees.

Ministry of Women & Child Development launches web based portal pmcaresforchildren.in
Union Women and Child Development Ministry has launched a web based portal to facilitate submission of applications, identification of children eligible to receive support under the 'PM CARES for Children' scheme. The web portal is www.pmcaresforchildren.in.
  • The scheme aims to ensure comprehensive care and protection of children who have lost their parents to COVID pandemic, in a sustained manner.
  • The module on Child registration and identification of beneficiaries has been made functional

NITY Aayog Chief Executive Officer Amitabh Kant launched the book titled, ‘Shifting Orbits: Decoding the Trajectory of the Indian Start-up Ecosystem’, co-edited by Professor Rohan Chinchwadkar, a finance professor at the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management at IIT Bombay.
  •  This book, which is a comprehensive guide for start-ups, is authored by some of the most prominent voices in the Indian start-up ecosystem.

22nd Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas being celebrated across country
 
22nd Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, is being celebrated across the country on 26 July, 2021. The Nation is remembering its war heroes and paying tributes to Martyrs on Kargil Vijay Diwas.
  • The day marks the victory of Indian armed forces in Operation Vijay in 1999, when they evicted the infiltrators backed by Pakistani army from high outposts in Kargil sector.
