India's first railway station inside tunnel to come up in Himachal Pradesh

For the first time in India, a railway station will be built inside a tunnel at a height of 3,000 metres, on the strategic Bilaspur-Manali-Leh line close to the Sino-India border.

  • Once completed, the Keylong station in Himachal Pradesh will be the first on the railway network to be inside a tunnel. 

  • The station will be at a height of around 3,000 metres and will be inside a 27-km-long tunnel.


North Central Railways launches apps for its employees, passengers

The North Central Railways (NCR) launched two mobile apps, 'NCR RASTA' and 'Yatri RASTA', for its employees and passengers, respectively, for locating assets and stations.

  • The 'NCR RASTA' app is for the use of railway officers and staff and has exact mapping of all railway assets. It will enable railway staff to reach desired asset using Google Navigation in case of any emergency.

  • Likewise, the 'Yatri RASTA' app will allow general public to locate the railway stations easily.


India To Host 4th Edition Of Global Partners' Forum in December 2018

India will host the fourth edition of Global Partners' Forum on 12th and 13th December 2018 in New Delhi. The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH) will unite over 100 countries' representatives to discuss issues, strategies and solutions to women's, children's and adolescents' health. It will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and PMNCH.

  • Villages getting symbolic smoke-free certificates have been making headlines in the country for some time now.
    Kerala is one of the States with the highest penetration of LPG, which is transforming lifestyles.
    The target has almost been achieved in most villages, towns and cities in the Kerala.


Kamal Hassan launches Roudram app for women safety

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan inaugurated a mobile app called Roudram created by a student named Sudha to empower women. Roudram app aims at giving women assistance in times of emergency.

  • The word 'roudram' means anger, and is aimed at channelising once anger in changing the society for a better tomorrow for women.


Kati Bihu festival celebrated across Assam

Assam's third Bihu festival, known as Kati Bihu, was being celebrated across the state.  On the occasion of Kati Bihu, women in urban and rural areas, try to ward off evil and pray for a rich harvest by lighting earthen lamps.

  • The festival derives its name from the Assamese month of Kati. This is a much somber festival when compared to the other two Bihu festivals of the state - the Rongali and Bohagi Bihu.


IRDAI panel to study feasibility of paying claims in instalments

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has formed a panel to examine the feasibility of payment of general and health insurance claims in instalments.

  • In order to examine the proposal, the regulator has constituted a working group with Suresh Mathur, ED (Health), IRDAI, as its chairman.

  • The panel will look into the need for allowing settlement of personal accident and benefit-based health insurance claims in instalments by general and health insurance companies.


Parliamentary panel to examine functioning of EPFO

A parliamentary panel will examine the functioning of retirement fund body Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), its coverage and recovery of arrears.

  •  The parliamentary standing committee on labour has also decided to review the implementation of labour laws, social security and welfare scheme for workers. The panel will be headed by BJP MP Kirit Somaiya and has selected a wide range of subjects related to labourers.


In a first, UP govt makes man-animal conflict a 'State Declared Disaster'

The Uttar Pradesh government has made the man-animal conflict a 'State Declared Disaster' bringing such incidents under the ambit of State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to ensure better coordination and relief during such mishaps in the state.

  • Taking the historical decision to this effect, the state government has issued orders which will enable faster monetary relief to the victims of attack of wild animals.
    As per the provisions of the order, in cases of human death due to man-animal conflict, relief of Rs 5 lakh would be given to the family of deceased while the disbursement of compensation for injury would be in accordance to SDRF guidelines.


Andhra Pradesh hamlets shine in rural survey

Kuligod in Karnataka’s Belagavi district is the country’s best developed village, but more than a third of the gram panchayats ranked in the top 10 are in Andhra Pradesh, according to the findings of an ongoing Rural Development Ministry survey.

  • There are 97 panchayats in the top 10 ranks. Of these, 37 panchayats are in Andhra Pradesh while 24 are in Tamil Nadu.

  • The Rural Development Ministry has done a gap analysis of more than 3.5 lakh villages, in more than 1.6 lakh panchayats under the Mission Antyodaya convergence scheme.

Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa To Form New Government in Bhutan

The Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) will form new government in Bhutan. The party has won 30 seats in 47 member National Assembly. DNT President Dr Lotay Tshering won from South Thimphu constituency with a huge margin and he is set to form the new government.

  • This is the first time in Bhutan’s decade old parliamentary democracy that a new party has been chosen to form the government.


Chinese-made world's largest amphibious aircraft completes successful flight

China's home-grown amphibious aircraft AG600, claimed by Beijing as the world's largest, carried out its first take-off and landing on waters.

  • Developed and built by the state-owned aircraft giant Aviation Industry Corporation of China, the seaplane took off from the Zhanghe Reservoir in Jingmen, Hubei's province.

Global body World Steel Association (worldsteel) on Thursday said it has elected JSW Steel CMD Sajjan Jindal as its treasurer. The new officers are elected for a one-year period.

Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania awards 4th annual Carnot Prize 2018 to Union Minister Piyush Goyal

Union Minister for Railways, Coal and Corporate Affairs Piyush Goyal will receive the prestigious Carnot prize for his contribution towards sustainable energy solutions.

  • The former power minister will be awarded by the Kleinmana Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design.

  • The award in the energy sector is named after French physicist Nicolas Sadi Carnot who recognised that the power of the steam engine would "produce a great revolution" in human development.


Indian-Origin Woman Wins Top US Honour For Combatting Sex Slavery

Minal Patel Davis won the US' Presidential Medal for her work against sex slavery and labour exploitation at a White House ceremony attended by President Donald Trump. Davis is Special Adviser on Human Trafficking to Houston Mayor.

BJP MP Bhola Singh passes away

Senior BJP leader and sitting Member of Parliament (MP) from Bihar Bhola Singh passed away at a Delhi hospital. He was 79.

  • Mr Singh was a two-time member of Lok Sabha from Bihar. In 2009, he represented Nawada seat while Begusarai in 2014 in the lower house.


Popular Lingayat seer Siddalinga passes away in Karnataka

Karnataka's popular Lingayat seer Siddalinga Swami passed away at Gadag in the state's northwest region. He was 69. He was one of the most revered Lingayat seers in Karnataka and known for his oratory.

World Osteoporosis Day

World Osteoporosis Day is observed annually on 20 October , and launches a year-long campaign dedicated to raising global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis and metabolic bone disease. It is Organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF).

  • The theme of World Osteoporosis Day 2018 calls for global action in order to improve bone health and prevent fractures caused by osteoporosis.
