India to become world’s 3rd largest aviation market around 2024: IATA

India will become the world’s third largest aviation market around 2024 surpassing the United Kingdom, global airlines’ body International Air Transport Association (IATA) said as it projected total air passenger numbers to touch 8.2 billion in 2037.

  • Releasing the latest update to IATA’s 20-year Air Passenger Forecast, the grouping also cautioned that growth prospects for air transport and the economic benefits driven by aviation could be curtailed if protectionist measures are implemented by governments.

  • According to the IATA, China would displace the United States as the world’s largest aviation market in the mid-2020s. India will take 3rd place after the US, surpassing the UK around 2024. Indonesia is forecast to be a standout performer - climbing from the world’s 10th largest aviation market in 2017 to the 4th largest by 2030.

Kerala needs Rs 31,000 crore post floods: UN report

Kerala will need about Rs 31,000 crore for recovery and reconstruction following the century’s worst floods, according to a UN report presented to the Chief Minister by UN Resident Coordinator in India Yuri Afanasiev.

  • Afanasiev presented the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Thiruvananthapuram. This is the first time the UN has prepared such a report in India.

  • The report assessed the damage and loss incurred due to the devastating floods in the state in August. It said the state would need about Rs 31,000 crore for recovery and reconstruction.


Centre to build sports stadium for differently-abled in Meghalaya

Union Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot announced that the Centre would set up a sports stadium of international standard for persons with disability in Meghalaya. He said the stadium would be one of the five facilities across the country to be set up at an estimated cost of over Rs 200 crore. The detailed project report will be prepared soon and the stadium will come up before the National Games 2022.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi inaugurates 5th edition of Women of India National Organic Fest 2018 in New Delhi

Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi inaugurated the 5th edition of Women of India National Organic Fest 2018 in New Delhi. The fest will continue till 4th of next month.

  • She said, for the first time vegan food and food court have been introduced in this edition of the festival. She said nearly 400 groups and companies are participating in the fest to sell their organic produce.


Union Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 10th Edition of BIOFACH INDIA

Hon'ble Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 10th Edition of BIOFACH INDIA, the largest show on the "Organic Sector" in India. Being organized by NuernbergMesse India and APEDA(Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Ministry of Commerce and Industry) and supported by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, BIOFACH INDIA is taking place in Pragati Maidan from October 25th till 27th.

PM Modi Inaugurated Krishi Kumbha in Lucknow

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, the use of new techniques has started changing the farming scenario in the country and farmers will now become power generators with the help of modern technologies. Mr. Modi was speaking after inaugurating three-day long Krishi Kumbh 2018 in Lucknow through video conferencing.  3-day-long Krishi Kumbh is having Haryana and Jharkhand as partner states and Japan and Israel as partner countries.

World's largest airport 'under one roof' to open in Istanbul



The world's largest airport terminal "under one roof" with a capacity to serve 90 million passengers will be officially opened on October 29 in Istanbul, Turkey.

  • Dubbed as phase-1A of the project Istanbul New Airport will have a capacity to handle 90 million passenger per year, making it the largest such facility in the world.

  • The airport has been envisioned to have a total capacity of up to 200 million passengers, once all four phases are completed in the next 10 years. The new airport is located near the Black Sea coast on the Europe side of Istanbul.


2nd International Conference On Primary Health Care Held in Kazakhstan

J P Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare addressed the ‘Second Plenary Session of ‘2nd International Conference on Primary Health Care (PHC) towards UHC & SDGs’, at Astana, Kazakhstan.

  • The conference aims to renew the commitment to primary health care to achieve universal health coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. Mr Nadda spoke on the theme “The Future of Primary Health Care”.


Mahinda Rajpaksa Sworn In As The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

In a dramatic political development in Sri Lanka, former strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa was sworn in as the new prime minister by President Maithripala Sirisena after his party abruptly quit the ruling coalition.

  • The sudden development came after Sirisena's broader political front United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) announced that it has decided to quit the current unity government with prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP).

IDFC Bank to be renamed as IDFC First Bank

IDFC Bank has proposed to change its name to 'IDFC First Bank Ltd' as it is in the process of amalgamating non-banking financial company Capital First with itself. The Board of Directors of IDFC Bank at its meeting decided to seek approval of the Reserve Bank of India to rename the bank as 'IDFC First Bank Limited'.

  • Extra info.:
    IDFC had applied for a banking licence in 2013 and got in-principle approval for the same from the RBI in the following year. It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.


RBI to inject Rs 40000 cr liquidity into system in November

The Reserve Bank of India will inject Rs 40,000 crore in the banking system next month, a move that will help ease cash shortage in the system and stabilise debt market rates.

  • RBI has decided to conduct purchase of government securities under open market operations for an aggregate amount of $400 billion in the month of November 2018.

Wheelchair shuttler Sanjeev Kumar wins two gold medals at Denmark Open



Dropped for Para Asian Games, wheelchair badminton player Sanjeev Kumar returned with two gold medals and a bronze from the first Victor Denmark Championship recently in Odense, Denmark.

  • He won the men's singles and doubles events and was third in the mixed doubles.

    Sanjeev, who has a polio-affected right leg, started playing badminton in 2007, and in just one year, he featured in his first national tournament and the quarterfinals of the Asia Cup.


PV Sindhu regains World No. 2 spot in BWF rankings



Olympic and world championship silver medallist PV Sindhu has once again regained her World No. 2 status in the latest BWF rankings. She is behind Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying, who continues to dominate the rankings.

  • Saina Nehwal gained 9th position. In the men's singles, Kidambi Srikanth remained static at world no 6.


India's FIFA ranking unfazed, retain 97th spot

The Indian men's football ranking is unfazed, as it continues to be placed at the 97th spot in the latest rankings released by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). Belgium have retained the pole position ahead of World Cup champions France. Brazil is placed third, followed by Croatia. England also climbed up a place to seize the fifth spot.

India wins 2018 CAPAM International Innovations Awards

India has won the prestigious 2018 Commonwealth Association for Public Administration and Management Award. This award celebrates the spirit of innovation in the public service by recognising organisations that have made significant contributions to improve governance and services in the public sector. Government had sent entries for 2018 CAPAM International Innovations Awards, under various categories.

  • The initiative entitled “Unnayan Banka" Reinventing Education Using Technology of Banka District, State of Bihar has been awarded under the category “Innovation Incubation”.


Asma Jahangir posthumously awarded UN Human Rights Prize



Late Pakistani human rights activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir was announced as one of the four winners of the 2018 UN Human Rights Prize. She became the fourth Pakistani woman to be awarded the UN Human Rights Prize.

  • Three other recipients were Tanzanian activist Rebeca Gyumi, Brazil's first indigenous lawyer Joenia Wapichana and Ireland's human rights organisation Front Line Defenders.

  • Jahangir, who passed away on February 11 due to cardiac arrest, was known for her outspoken nature and unrelenting pursuit of human rights as well as for remaining undaunted in the face of extreme pressure and opposition.


Sakharov prize awarded to jailed Ukrainian filmmaker Sentsov



The European Parliament has awarded Oleh Sentsov, a Ukrainian film director imprisoned in Russia after opposing Moscow's takeover of his native Crimea, with its prestigious 2018 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

  • Sentsov, a Crimean native who opposed Russia's 2014 takeover of the Ukrainian peninsula, is serving a 20-year prison term after being convicted of terrorism in a trial that he, human rights groups, and Western governments contend was politically motivated.
