Centre to make Euro 6 mandatory for initial launch from April 1, 2020: Nitin Gadkari

The Centre has taken a decision to make all new cars meet Euro 6 standards mandatory for initial launch from April 1, 2020, said Union Minister for Transport Nitin Gadkari addressing Symposium of International Automotive Technology 2019 in Pune.

  • Notably, the aim of Euro 6 is to reduce levels of exhaust emissions in petrol and diesel cars, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxide (NOx), hydrocarbons (THC and NMHC) and particulate matter (PM).


PM Modi inaugurates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institue of Medical and Research 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical and Research in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

  • He announced that along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institue of Medical and Research, there would also be another hospital which will be affiliated with the Ayushman Bharat scheme.


Sitharaman inaugurates Diffo bridge in Arunachal Pradesh

Defence Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the 426.60 metre long Diffo Bridge over Chipu River in Lower Dibang Valley District in Arunachal Pradesh.

  • In addition to enhancing operational capability, the 329-metre bridge will usher economic prosperity for people of Namsai, Lohit, Anjaw and Lower Dibang districts of Arunachal Pradesh.


UP cabinet renames Mughalsarai tehsil as Deendayal Upadhyay

The Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved the proposal of renaming the Mughalsarai tehsil as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, the co-founder and president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh.

  • In August last year, the iconic Mughalsarai Railway station got officially renamed as Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction. On October 16 last year, Allahabad was formally rechristened to Prayagraj.


MP CM Kamal Nath launches Rs 50,000 cr farm loan waiver scheme

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath launched his government's Rs 50,000-crore farm debt-waiver scheme named 'Jai Kisan Rin Mukti Yojana'.

  • Hailing the scheme as a milestone, Nath said here it would benefit 55 lakh small and marginal farmers.


Regional Conference on ‘Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme’ held in Mumbai

A Regional Conference on ‘Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme’ was held in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

  • Programme Implementing Agencies including NGOs and state government representatives from Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Goa were present for the conference.


BES EXPO 2019 begins in New Delhi

Information and Broadcasting Secretary Amit Khare and TRAI Chairman RS Sharma inaugurated the 25th International conference and exhibition on terrestrial and satellite broadcasting, BES EXPO 2019 in New Delhi.

  • The theme for this exhibition is Next Gen Broadcasting in the IT World.

The second World Orange Festival has begun in Nagpur. The festival, while offering its famed oranges to the world, will also showcase and brand the exquisite fruit in order to boost its export.

Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated UNNATI Programme of ISRO in Bengaluru

Minister of State in Department of Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the UNNATI (Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly & Training) programme organized by ISRO in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

  • UNNATI, a capacity building programme on Nanosatellite development, is an initiative by ISRO to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first United Nations conference on the exploration and peaceful uses of outer space (UNISPACE-50).


China focus country at 9th Hyderabad literary festival start January 25

Literature, art and culture of China will be in focus at the 9th edition of the prestigious Hyderabad Literary Festival (HLF), which has invited China as the guest of honour this year.

  • The festival, which begins in Hyderabad on January 25 will also pay a special tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in his 150th birth anniversary year. Keeping with its tradition of paying special attention to one Indian language at each edition of the festival, Gujarati has been picked as the language in focus for HLF 2019.

  • The three-day literary event that draws over a 100 writers, artistes, academics, scholars, publishers from India and abroad each year is bringing this year an additional feature of 'Kaavya Dhaara'- an exclusive platform for poetry reading, rendering and performance.

World’s first human rights TV channel launches in UK

The world’s first human rights TV channel has been launched by the International Observatory of Human Rights (IOHR).

  • The web-based IOHRTV channel has launched on the UK’s netgem.tv platform, aiming “to put human rights into the front line of mainstream media.”

  • IOHRTV will broadcast programmes such as civil society-based talk show NGO Focus, featuring interviews with organisations such as Save the Children, Care International and Refuge.

SBI, other banks agree to finance Nagpur-Mumbai Samruddhi Corridor

A consortium of banks led by StateBank of India has agreed to provide finance for Nagpur-Mumbai 'SamruddhiCorridor' expressway project. SBI has agreed to lend the highest amount, 8,500 crorerupees.

Beneficiaries under PMRPY cross 1-crore mark

Pradhan Mantri Rojgar Protsahan Yojana (PMRPY) has crossed the milestone of 1 crore beneficiaries as on January 14, 2019, according to a release by Ministry of Labour and Employment.

  • PMRPY is the flagship scheme of the Government for employment generation.

  • PMRPY was announced on 7th August, 2016 and is being implemented by Ministry of Labour & Employment through the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO).

  • Under the scheme, Government is paying full employers’ contribution of 12% (towards Employees’ Provident Fund and Employees’ Pension Scheme both), for a period of 3 years in respect of new employees who have been registered with the EPFO on or after 1st April 2016, with salary up to Rs. 15,000 per month.


Govt builds 1.37 crore rural homes since April 2014

In partnership with States, the Ministry of Rural Development has completed 1.37 crore Rural Homes since April 2014.

  • The Prime Minister launched the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) on 20 November 2016. After registration including geo-tagging, and account verification, the construction began primarily from the Financial Year 2017-18. So far 66.6 lakh homes have been completed under PMAY-G.


GDP growth likely to be tad higher at 7.5% in FY20: Ind-Ra

The country's economy is likely to grow a tad higher at 7.5 per cent in 2019-20 on account of steady improvement in major sectors -- industry and services, said India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra)

  • According to the advance estimates of the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the economy may clock a growth rate of 7.2 per cent in the current financial year, up from 6.7 per cent in the previous year.

  • Ind-Ra, a Fitch Group company, expects gross domestic product (GDP) growth to be a "tad higher" at 7.5 per cent in fiscal 2019-20.

Vinesh Phogat becomes first Indian athlete to be nominated in Laureus World Comeback of Year Award



Ace Indian female wrestler Vinesh Phogat has become the first Indian athlete to receive a nomination in the prestigious Laureus World Comeback of the Year Award.

  • She has been nominated alongside US Tour Championship winner Tiger Woods, who won his first tournament in five years.
