PM Modi inaugurates National Museum of Indian Cinema

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC) in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The state-of-the-art Museum has been built at a cost of over 140 crore rupees.

  • The creation of the museum has been guided by the Museum Advisory Committee headed by noted film maker Shyam Benegal.

  • The objective of the Museum is to take its visitors through an absorbing journey of over a century of Indian cinema in a story telling mode with the help of visuals, graphics, artifacts, interactive exhibits and multimedia expositions.


India to host UN conference on land degradation, desertification this year

India will host the 14th session of the Conference of Parties to United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) this year to address the issue of land degradation and desertification.

  • The UNCCD, established in 1994, has 197 parties working towards maintaining and restoring land and soil productivity and mitigating the effects of drought.


India's second defence innovation hub to come up in Maharashtra's Nashik

Nashik in Maharashtra will be the site of the country's second defence innovation hub after Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. The defence innovation hub at Nashik will help local industries and entrepreneurs and further the Centre's Make in India push in the country's defence sector.

Manipur CM launches 'School Fagat-Hansi' mission

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh launched 'School Fagat-Hansi' mission, an initiative under the Government's popular 'Go to Village' mission.

  • The scheme has been introduced with an ambitious objective to give renewed thrust towards the improvement of government schools both in terms of physical and manpower infrastructure.


Bhopal may get country's first cremation ground for cows

The country's first cremation ground for cows will be prepared in Madhya Pradesh's capital Bhopal and the city's municipal authorities are already on the lookout for a site for the purpose.

India to train 45 countries in nano-satellite making

India will train 45 countries in nano-satellite making through a new capacity building programme. The programme named Unispace Nanosatellite Assembly and Training by ISRO (UNNATI) was flagged off in this space hub by state-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K.Sivan and Minister of State in Deparment of Space Jitendra Singh.

  • The programme allows India to share its knowledge and expertise in space sector to other countries that can benefit from it.


Commemorative coins released to mark MGR birth anniversary

Two commemorative coins in the denomination of Rs 100 and Rs 5 were released to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of late Tamil Nadu chief minister and ruling AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran which was celebrated across the state.

7th ASEAN-India Tourism Ministers meeting held in at Vietnam

The Union Minister for Tourism, Shri. K. J. Alphons attended the Seventh Meeting of Tourism Ministers of ASEAN and India held in Ha Long City, Vietnam.

  • During the meeting, ministers launch ‘2019’ as the ASEAN India- Year of Tourism.


US airport to be renamed after boxing legend Muhammad Ali

The US city of Louisville in Kentucky state is set to rename its airport after hometown hero and boxing legend Muhammad Ali (name before conversion to Islam - Cassius Clay), who died in 2016.

  • Ali had inspired billions of people around the world with his boxing accolades as well as his openness about his conversion to the Muslim faith.


Palestine takes over chairmanship of Group of 77 and China from Egypt

Palestine took over the chairmanship of the Group of 77 and China from Egypt at the United Nations headquarters in New York. Palestine is slated to lead the bloc for 2019.

Japan launches Satellite for World’s 1st Artificial Meteor Shower

Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency has launched Tokyo-based startup Star-ALE’s mini-satellite aimed to deliver the world’s first artificial meteor shower.

  • The satellite carries 400 tiny balls, will be enough for 20-30 events, that will glow as they rush down the atmosphere on being released. ALE plans to deliver its first show in Hiroshima in early 2020.

Senior IPS officer Prabhat Singh has been appointed as Director General (Investigation) in the National Human Rights Commission.

Aqeel Ahmed new chairman of Council for Leather Exports

The Council for Leather Exports (CLE) said P R Aqeel Ahmed has been appointed as its new chairman. The council is a trade promotion orgnisation of leather and leather products industry.

RBI approves appointment of V Vaidyanathan as MD, CEO of IDFC First Bank

The Reserve Bank has approved the appointment of V Vaidyanathan as MD and CEO of IDFC First Bank for a period of three years, according to a regulatory filing.

  • Last month, IDFC Bank and non-banking financial company Capital First completed their merger, creating a combined loan asset book of Rs 1.03 lakh crore for the merged entity IDFC First Bank.

First UAE research prize for scientist CNR Rao

Eminent Indian scientist C.N.R. Rao of the Jawaharlal Nehru for Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bengaluru, has been conferred with the first Sheikh Saud International Prize for Materials Research by the Centre for Advanced Materials of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

  • The prize includes a plaque and cash prize of $100,000 (about Rs 71-lakh).


Indian-American Sikh presented with Rosa Parks

An Indian-American philanthropist and entrepreneur, Gurinder Singh Khalsa, has been presented with the prestigious Rosa Park Trailblazer award for his campaign that forced US authorities change their policy towards headgear of the Sikh community.

  • Indianapolis-based Khalsa, 45, was presented the award for his continued demonstration of courage and compassion.

Mary Oliver, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, passes away at 83

Mary Oliver (American poet ), the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet whose rapturous odes to nature and animal life brought her critical acclaim and popular affection, has passed away. She was 83.
