India's first all-woman party launched, to contest Lok Sabha polls

India's first-ever all-women political party the National Women's Party (NWP) was launched in Mumbai and it will contest half 283 of the 545 Lok Sabha seats in the 2019 elections.

  • The NWP, described as "a party of mothers", has been founded by a medico and social activist, (Dr) Shwetha Shetty, and will strive for 50 per cent reservation for women in the lower House.


Gadkari inaugurates bridge over Ravi linking J&K, Punjab

Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated a 1,210-meter span-bridge over the river Ravi in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district to reduce the distance to Punjab's Pathankot city by 36 km.

  • Constructed at a cost of Rs 158.84 crore, the bridge at Keerian-Gandial will improve inter-state connectivity and benefit over 220,000 people living on the two sides Kathua in Jammu and Pathankot in Punjab. It will reduce the distance between the two cities from 45 km to 8.6 km.


India Steel 2019 Exhibition and Conference Begins in Mumbai

India Steel 2019 Exhibition and Conference began in Mumbai. The three-day event organised by Ministry of Steel will help chart out the future growth path of the steel industry. Over 250 exhibiting companies from 15 countries, over 200 International buyers and large number of delegates are expected to hold business meetings during this event. More than 10 thousand business visitors both from India and abroad are expected to visit.

India Signs MoU With Sri Lanka to Modernize Facilities At Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies in Batticaloa

India and Sri Lanka signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide modern infrastructural facilities to Swami Vipulananda Institute of Aesthetic Studies of Eastern University in Batticaloa district of Sri Lanka. This project is part of Government of India’s continued efforts to assist and cooperate with Government of Sri Lanka in people-oriented development projects.

  • The project involves refurbishment of the auditorium and construction of a modern building complex with recording cum editing facilities and supply vehicles to the institute through a grant of over 27 crore Sri Lankan rupees from the Government of India.


Naval exercise "SEA VIGIL" to prevent 26/11-like attacks

Over a decade after the 26/11 Mumbai terror strikes, the Indian Navy has launched "Sea Vigil", a first of its kind and biggest coastal two-day defence exercise off the 7,516-km-long Indian coastline, involving all 13 coastal states, Union Territories and maritime stakeholders including fisherfolk.

  • The Sea Vigil exercise will comprehensively and holistically validate the efficacy of all coastal security measures since the terror strike of November 8, 2008 in Mumbai.

  • The two-day exercise will serve as a build-up to the major theatre-level tri-service exercise, TROPEX (Theatre-level Readiness Operational Exercise) conducted by the Indian Navy every two years.


Rajasthan govt decides to reverse Atal Seva Kendra as Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said that the state government has decided to reverse the Atal Seva Kendra (seva kendras at village panchayat and panchayat samiti level) as Rajiv Gandhi Seva Kendra, the original name.

  • In 2014, former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje-led government had renamed the kendras to honour former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his birth anniversary.

Arab Economic And Social Development Summit Held In Beirut

The leaders from the Arab World met in Beirut, Lebanon to discuss economic and social development. The leaders of the Arab World agreed on a 29-item economic agenda in addition to encouraging the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homeland at the conclusion.

  • The fifth Arab Economic and Social Development Summit would be held after four years later in the year 2023 in Mauritania.

Nepal bank announces ban of Indian notes above Rs 100

Nepal's central bank has announced the ban of Indian currency notes with denominations above Rs 100. The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) issued a circular for the institutions licensed by it notifying them about the ban. 

  • Currently, only the notes with a denomination of Rs 100 and below are freely exchangeable in Nepal.

Ankita Raina Wins ITF's Tournament In Singapore

India's Ankita Raina has won the International Tennis Federation's 25,000-dollar Women's tournament in Singapore. Ankita defeated top seed and world number 122 Arantxa Rus of the Netherland. She toppled four seeded players in the tournament to win her first title of the season and eighth overall.

Shooter Apurvi wins gold at Meyton Cup

Star Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela won gold in the women's 10 metre Air Rifle event at the ongoing Meyton Cup in Innsbruck (Austria). Apurvi thus managed to defend the title which she had won last year.

Virat Kohli sweeps three major ICC awards

Virat Kohli has become the first cricketer to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year, the ICC Men's Test Player of the Year and the ICC ODI Player of the Year awards following an extraordinary 2018. 

  • Kohli is not only the first player to win these three major ICC awards together but he has also been named the captain of the ICC Test and ODI teams of the year for a fabulous run in international cricket. 

  • Kohli was the unanimous choice of the Voting Academy for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy with South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada coming in second for both these awards and the ICC Test Player of the Year award. Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan was runner up to Kohli for the ICC ODI Player of the Year award.


Rishabh Pant named ICC Emerging Player of the Year

Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant was named Emerging Player of the Year by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The 21-year-old was picked by ICC's voting academy for scoring 537 runs with a century, two fifties in eight Tests, 40 catches and two stumpings during the voting period.

  • The wicketkeeper-batsman ended the five-Test series as the second-highest run-scorer after Cheteshwar Pujara in Australia, notching 350 runs in seven innings. While behind the stumps, he broke the record for most catches (20) by an Indian wicket-keeper in a Test series.

Ranjani Murali Wins 'Woman’s Voice Award' At AKLF 2019

US-based Indian poet Ranjani Murali received the 'Woman's Voice Award' at the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF) in Kolkata. The objective of the award - 'Prabha Khaitan Womans Voice Award' - is to recognise and encourage creative writing by women in India.
