Sushil Modi to head GoM on GST revenue shortfall faced by states

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi will head the seven-member Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the revenue shortfall being faced by states following the roll out of Goods and Services Tax (GST).

  • As per a GST Council notification, the committee will suggest steps for augmenting collections. It will undertake data analysis and suggest measures for course correction.


Gujarat becomes the first state to implement 10% Quota for General Category

Gujarat has become the first state to implement the 10% reservation for economically weaker sections of the general category. This comes a day after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the bill.

Puducherry to ban plastic from March 1

Puducherry government has imposed a ban on the sale and use of plastic products in the Union Territory from March 1.

  • On March 23 last year, the Maharashtra government had issued a notification, imposing a ban on the manufacture, use, sale and distribution of all plastic materials like plastic bags, spoons, plates, bottles and thermocol items.


Chennai Traffic Police introduces robots for traffic management

The Chennai Traffic Police inducted a road safety robot into its fold. Named ROADEO, the robot will make the pedestrians, especially children, feel safe while crossing the roads.

  • It will also ease the work of traffic police, as these robots can be integrated with the traffic signals, as well as can be operated manually, through a Bluetooth app.


National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 launched  in New Delhi

Minister of State (I/C) for Youth Affairs and Sports Col Rajyavardhan Rathore (Retd) launched the National Youth Parliament Festival 2019 in New Delhi, thereby beginning the celebration of the National Youth Day 2019.

9th International Conference on Micro Irrigation to be held at Aurangabad

Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Government of India is organizing the 9th International Micro Irrigation Conference on Modern Agriculture at Aurangabad in Maharashtra from January 16–18, 2019.

  • The event will be a multi-disciplinary dialogue in the form of a conference discussing issues related to micro irrigation for modern agriculture and various related issues like new techniques in micro irrigation for increased crop productivity, micro irrigation in cluster level farming etc.


India-Myanmar begin Army exercise for UN peacekeeping

The second India-Myanmar bilateral Army exercise 'IMBEX 2018-19' commenced at Chandimandir military station near Chandigarh.

  • During the exercise, focus will be on training the Myanmar Army on tactics, procedures, expertise and methodology required by the contingent of the member nations for serving in UN peacekeeping operations.


K Dhanya Sanal first woman trekking to Agasthyarkoodam peak after HC order

The 38-year-old K Dhanya Sanal, a spokesperson for the Union Ministry of Defence, has become the first woman, who is trekking to Agasthyarkoodam peak, after the Kerala High Court lifted the ban on women's trekking on December 9 last year.

India retain No. 1 spot in ICC Test team rankings

India have retained their number one spot in the updated ICC Test team rankings, released on 14th January 2019.  Following their 2-1 victory over Australia in the four-Test match series, India are leading the list with 116 points.

Maharashtra tops medal tally with 37 golds at Khelo India

Maharashtra topped the medal tally with 37 golds at the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune. It has 111 medals in its kitty with 37 gold, 31 silver and 43 bronze. Delhi continued to follow second with 30 gold and Haryana too maintained its third position with 28 gold.

Abhinav Shaw becomes youngest gold medallist in shooting

At the Khelo India Youth Games in Pune, ten year old Abhinav Shaw became the youngest gold medallist in shooting. He teamed up with Mehuli Ghosh to help West Bengal win the 10m air rifle mixed team event.

Bengaluru Raptors win Premier Badminton League title

Bengaluru Raptors have won their first ever Premier Badminton League title. In the title clash played at Bengaluru, Bengaluru edged out Mumbai Rockets, with a 4-3 win.

CEO of Flipkart's arms Myntra, Jabong Ananth Narayanan quits

The Chief Executive of Flipkart Group's e-tail portals Myntra and Jabong, Ananth Narayanan, has stepped down from the post.

  • The portals have named Amar Nagaram as the head of Myntra and Jabong.

Writer Namita Gokhale has won the Sushila Devi Literature Award for her novel "Things to Leave Behind".

  • She was awarded in the 'Best Book of Fiction Written by a Woman Author' category at the inaugural edition of Bhopal Literature and Art Festival (BLF).


PM Narendra Modi receives first-ever Philip Kotler award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, received the first-ever Philip Kotler Presidential award. The Award focuses on the triple-bottom-line of People, Profit and Planet. As per the award citation, Mr Modi has been selected for his outstanding leadership for the nation.

  • Prof. Philip Kotler is a world-renowned Professor of Marketing at Northwestern University, Kellogg School of Management. 










OBITUARIES


Former Ranji cricketer Rajesh Ghodge passes away at 47

Former Ranji Trophy cricketer of Goa, Rajesh Ghodge passed away during a local tournament at the Rajendra Prasad Stadium in Goa. The 47-year-old, who was playing non-striker, suffered a massive heart attack.

1956 Olympian footballer Mohammed Zulfiqar passes away

Former India footballer Mohammed Zulfiqaruddin, who was part of the fourth place finishing team in the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne, passed away in Hyderabad.
