Government forms GoM for GST issues in real estate

The Centre constituted a seven-member Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into Goods and Services Tax (GST)-related issues of the real estate sector.

  • Nitin Patel, the Deputy Chief Minister of Gujarat, would head the GoM which would analyse the tax rate of GST on the under-construction residential properties for boosting the realty segment.

  • Among the issues concerning the sector, a major subject is the GST rate on under-construction residential properties. There have been demand from many quarters to slash the rate on the segment to 5 per cent from the current 12 per cent.


Government forms GoM on GST issues in lottery trade

The government set up an eight-member ministerial panel headed by Maharashtra Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar to look into GST-related issues of lottery business.

Pradhan flags off SAKSHAM awareness vans

Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan flagged off SAKSHAM (Sanrakshan Kshmata Mahotsav) Vans to promote and create awareness among people on the need of oil and gas conservation for the future and the methods to do it.

  • The van will travel to 30 districts to create awareness on conservation of energy for a better future.


6th ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ organized by WCD Ministry held in Chandigarh

The Ministry of Women and Child Development is organised the three-day 6th ‘Women of India Organic Festival’ at Leisure Valley, Chandigarh, to celebrate and promote women farmers and entrepreneurs in the organic sector from the remotest parts of India.

  • The festival aims to encourage Indian women entrepreneurs and farmers to connect with more buyers and thus, empower them through financial inclusion, while promoting organic culture in India.


1st National EMRS National Sports Meet, 2019 began at Hyderabad

The 1st National Level Sports Meet for the students of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) was inaugurated at G.M.C Balayogi Stadium, Gachibowli, Hyderabad.

Pongal: Harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu

Pongal is a three-day Hindu festival majorly celebrated in south India. It is celebrated in the winters when the sun reaches its southernmost point according to the Hindu calculations.

  • Derived from a Tamil word, Pongal means to boil. Rice is boiled in milk and offered to the sun first and then cows and then to the family and friends.

Cabinet approves Rs 6,000 recap of EXIM Bank

The Union Cabinet approved capital infusion of Rs 6,000 crore in Export-Import Bank of India (EXIM Bank) through recapitalisation bonds to boost the bank's capacity in export financing.

Stephen Constantine (from UK) has decided to step down as the head coach of the Indian football team following team's exit from 2019 AFC Asian Cup.

Petr Cech announces retirement from professional football

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech (from Czech Republic) announced that he would be retiring from professional football at the end of the current season.

  • The 36-year-old, who had signed his first professional contract 20 years ago, was of the view that it was the right time to retire.

Snapchat's CFO resigns after 8 months of appointment

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of photo-messaging app Snapchat, Tim Stone, has called it quits after just eight months of being appointed at the post.

  • Stone will however continue to serve as Snapchat's CFO while the company searches for a replacement.

India born, Dr. Rattan Lal honoured with 2019 Japan Prize

Two scientists are being recognized with the 2019 Japan Prize for original and outstanding achievements that not only contribute to the advancement of science and technology, but also promote peace and prosperity for all mankind.

  • One of them is India born, Dr. Rattan Lal, Distinguished University Professor of Soil Science at The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A. is being honored for his work in identifying technological options adapted to various ecosystems through his intensive basic and applied research on processes and factors of soil degradation caused by inappropriate biological production.


Glenn Close to receive Oscar Wilde Award

Veteran star Glenn Close is set to receive the Oscar Wilde Award, the US-Ireland Alliance has announced.

  • Close, 71, will be receive the honour from Melissa McCarthy during the 14th Annual Oscar Wilde Awards.

Assam Accord signatory Biraj Sarma passes away

Senior AGP leader and one of the signatories of the Assam Accord, Biraj Kumar Sarma, has passed away after suffering from chronic liver disease.

  • Sarma along with former Assam Chief Minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and the late Bhrigu Kumar Phukan signed the Assam Accord on August 15, 1985, marking the end of the six-year-long Assam movement against "foreigners".


Veteran journalist Rajendra Prabhu passes away

Veteran journalist Rajendra Prabhu, who was at the forefront of media trade union movement, passed away after a brief illness.
