Odisha CM launches 'Ama Ghare LED' Scheme

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched the 'Ama Ghare LED' scheme, under which about 95 lakh families in the state will each get four LED bulbs free of cost.

  • The free LED bulbs will be distributed at Panchayat offices as well as PEETHA (People’s Empowerment—Enabling Transparency and Accountability of Odisha Initiative) camps across the state.


Sikkim CM launches 'One Family, One Job' scheme

Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling launched the 'One Family, One Job' scheme that envisions jobs to a member of every family which does not have a government job in the state.

  • Chamling's Sikkim Democratic Font government has announced that 20,000 youths would immediately be given temporary jobs under the scheme.


'ORGANICS AND MILLETS-2019' International Trade Fair to take place in Bengaluru

The much sought after Organics and Millets-2019 International Trade Fair, organized by the Government of Karnataka's Department of Agriculture, will be held from 18th to 20th January 2019 in Bengaluru's Palace Grounds.

  • The flagship event will revolve around the theme: K-Source, celebrating the State of Karnataka as the source for Next Gen Smart Foods.


Kerala tops list with 5 out of 10 destinations in India

Booking.com, one of the world's leading digital travel platforms, revealed that Kerala toped the list with five out of 10 most welcoming tourist destinations in India.

  • According to its 2018 Guest Review Awards survey data, the five destinations were Varkala, Kochi, Thekkady, Alleppey and Munnar.


Isro to set up Human Space Flight Centre in Bengaluru for manned missions

The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) is setting up a ‘Human Space Flight Centre’ in Bengaluru, which will support its quest of making country’s maiden manned space mission a success.

  • Gaganyaan, an Indian crewed orbital spacecraft is intended to be the foundation of the Indian Human Spaceflight Programme.

India slips to 42nd place on EIU Democracy Index

India has slipped to 42nd place on an annual Global Democracy Index amid “rise of conservative religious ideologies” and increase in vigilantism and violence against minorities as well as other dissenting voices.

  • While Norway has again topped the list, followed by Iceland and Sweden, compiled by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), India has moved down from 32nd place last year and remains classified among “flawed democracies”.


President confers honorary rank of General of Indian Army on Nepal Army Chief

President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on Purna Chandra Thapa, the Chief of the Army Staff of Nepalese Army.

  • The honour was given to him at a special Investiture Ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

India to retain status as fastest growing economy in 2019-20: World Bank

According to World Bank's Global Economic Prospects (GEP) report, fuelled by policy reforms and rebound in credit, India's economy is forecast to expand by 7.5 per cent during the 2019-20 fiscal year and retain its position as the fastest growing major economy in a world of slowing growth.

GST registration threshold limit increased to Rs 40 lakh

The GST Council relaxed the tax exemption limit to Rs 40 lakh from the earlier cap of Rs 20 lakh during its 32nd meeting. The all-powerful panel also decided to extend the composition scheme to traders from informal sector rendering services or mixed supplies with a turnover up to Rs 50 lakh.

  • The exemption limit for small states has also been increased to Rs 20 lakh from Rs 10 lakh.

Ashok Chawla steps down as NSE chairman

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) Chairman Ashok Chawla stepped down from his position. Chawla, who has been the chairman of NSE since 2016, stepped down "in light of recent legal developments."

Filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta to be honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award

National award-winning filmmaker Buddhadeb Dasgupta will be handed the Lifetime Achievement Award by the West Bengal Film Journalists Association (WBFJA).

  • The award is in the name of the late Satyajit Ray. He is a poet and also taught economics in a college before taking up filmmaking.










IMPORTANT DAYS


National Youth Day

National Youth Day is celebrated on 12 January being the birthday of Swami Vivekananda. In 1984 the Government of India declared the day as National Youth Day and since 1985 the event is celebrated in India every year.
