Central government gives nod for Centre for Classical Language in Kerala

More than five years after Malayalam was declared a classical language, the Union Government issued its nod for setting up the Centre for Classical Language at the Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University in Tirur.

29th Indian Paint Conference - 2019 to be held in Agra

The Indian Paint Association (IPA), the apex body of the country's paint industry announced that the 29th biennial Indian Paint Conference would be held in Agra, Uttar Pradesh from 11th to 13th January 2019. This would be the largest trade show of the estimated INR 500 billion (50,000 Crore) Indian Paints & Coatings industry.

  • The theme of the Conference is 'Paints Pe Charcha - Naye Aayaam' signifying in-depth deliberations (Charcha) to discover new dimensions (Naye Aayaam) in these challenging but exciting times for the Indian Paints and Coatings industry.


‘National Consultation on Child Protection’ held in New Delhi

The First ‘National Consultation on Child Protection’ for 2019 was held at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development.

  • The meeting was organized to follow up on the exercise of monitoring of the CCIs by States/UTs, to deliberate upon various aspects of child protection and to take stock of the efforts made by States/UTs regarding improvements in the Child Care Institutions.


Andaman To Be First Island To Operate Seaplanes Under UDAN-3

According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, islands in Andaman will soon be connected by seaplanes that can land on or take-off from the water. To facilitate the same, the government has approved flight operations on 13 water aerodrome routes under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme.

  • The government had opened bidding under the third phase of its regional connectivity scheme, UDAN-3, in November, and had received a total of 111 proposals by 15 airlines.


Alok Verma removed as CBI chief by PM Modi-chaired committee

CBI director Alok Verma has been removed from his post after a high-powered committee headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for over two hours to decide his fate, making him the first chief in the history of the agency to face such action. Verma’s tenure as CBI chief was till January 31.

  • Verma was reinstated by a Supreme Court order after he was sent on forced leave by the government amid a bitter spat with Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

Sri Lanka’s Central Bank gets USD 400 Million Swap from RBI

Sri Lanka’s Central Bank (Central Bank of Sri Lanka) announced that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has agreed to provide USD 400 million under a swap arrangement to boost the island nation’s reserves.

  • It stated that a further request to the RBI for another SWAP arrangement of USD 1 billion is “under consideration”. These are to be made available under the SAARC SWAP facility. The RBI has agreed to provide the funds under its SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) Swap Facility.


RBI extends Tokenisation Services to Online Merchants

Continuing its efforts to improve the safety of card transactions, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) extended the use of tokenisation -- hiding of actual card details with a unique token -- in the wider payments ecosystem.

  • To date, the RBI had allowed card payment networks like Visa and MasterCard to use the tokenisation technology in card transactions. The technology is now allowed to be used by merchants holding the card credentials like online retailers.

Mary Kom attained number one position in AIBA rankings

M C Mary Kom has attained number one position in the International Boxing Association's (AIBA) latest world rankings. She became the most successful boxer in world championships' history when she claimed the 48kg category top honours in Delhi in November last year.

Harendra Singh ousted as Indian men's hockey team coach

Hockey India removed Harendra Singh as the coach of the Indian men's hockey team following their disappointing run in the recently-concluded Hockey World Cup.

Albie Morkel retires from all forms of cricket

South African all-rounder Albie Morkel announced retirement from all form of cricket. Albie Morkel played a total of 58 one day matches for South Africa scoring 782 runs with an average of 23.7 and scalping 50 wickets with an economy rate of 5.5.

Mohamed Salah Named African Footballer of the Year

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah has been named as the 2018 Confederation of African Football Player of the Year. For the second consecutive year he has won the award. Egypt forward Salah, 26, beat Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane of Senegal and Arsenal and Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the title.

  • Houston Dash and South Africa forward Thembi Kgatlana was named Women's Player of the Year.


Egypt to host 2019 Africa Cup of Nations

Egypt will host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations between 15th June and 13th July. The CAF executive committee preferred Egypt to South Africa as replacement for original hosts Cameroon, who were dropped due to delays in preparations and concerns over security.

Adi Godrej conferred ICSI lifetime award

Industrialist and Godrej Group Chairman Adi Godrej was conferred the ICSIs Lifetime Achievement Award for 'Translating Excellence in Corporate Governance into Reality.'

  • The awards were instituted by The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), which is celebrating its golden jubilee.

Nobel Peace Prize winner and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai pens a new book, titled 'We Are Displaced: My Journey and Stories from Refugee Girls Around the World,' charting her experiences traveling the world and visiting refugee camps.

World Hindi Day is celebrated on January 10 every year, marking the anniversary of first World Hindi Conference which was held in 1975.
