Govt launches initiative to enable women entrepreneurs to sell items on GeM

Government eMarketplace (GeM) has launched an initiative - Womaniya on GeM - to enable women entrepreneurs and self-help groups to sell different products at the platform.

  • GeM is an online platform of the ministry for procurement of goods and services by government departments, public sector units, and other agencies.

  • The initiative seeks to develop women entrepreneurship on the margins of society to achieve gender-inclusive economic growth.


PM Modi inaugurates Bolangir-Bichhupali railway line in Odisha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Bolangir-Bichhupali railway line in Balangir, Odisha

  • Furthermore, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a permanent building at the Kendriya Vidyalaya at Sonepur and inaugurated new Passport Sewa Kendras at Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapur, Puri, Phulbani, Bargarh and Balangir


Assam govt forms GoM on ST reservation

Assam Government set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma to recommend measures for protection of rights of existing tribal communities as well as to decide on the benefits to be given to new Scheduled Tribes.

India's Largest Startup Ecosystem inaugurated in Kerala

Kerala has launched the country’s largest startup hub with a 1,000-seat capacity in Kalamassery, Kochi. Named ‘Integrated Startup Complex,’ the facility is built to provide top quality infrastructure for incubation and acceleration for the state’s startups.

  • The Integrated Startup Complex under the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) includes the ultra-modern facilities of Maker Village that promote hardware startups, the BioNest that promotes medical technologies, BRINC which is the country's first international accelerator for hardware startups.


Global Aviation Summit 2019 inaugurated in Mumbai

Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the Global Aviation Summit 2019 in Mumbai. The two-day summit, with a theme 'Flying for all-especially the next 6 Billion', is being organised by Ministry of Civil Aviation in association with FICCI.

  • It offers stakeholders an opportunity to explore, deliberate and understand how technology-driven innovations will change air travel in the decades to come.

Macedonia Renamed As 'The Republic Of Northern Macedonia'

The Parliament of Macedonia has passed the resolution to amend the constitution of the country to rename it as the Republic of Northern Macedonia.

  • The name change will help resolve a decades-long dispute with neighboring Greece opening the way for Skopje to join NATO and the European Union.

Former boxer Ali Qamar named women's chief coach

Mohammed Ali Qamar was the man who brought India her first Commonwealth Games gold medal in boxing in 2002. Qamar has added another feather to his illustrious career as he takes over as chief coach for the country’s women pugilists. Thus, he becomes the youngest ever to get the top job. He, thus, replaces veteran Shiv Singh.

Shakil Ahmed sets world record in Indoor rowing

Asian Cup Gold medallist Shakil Amed has added one more feather to his cap when he set up a world record in indoor rowing by completing 1,00,000 (one lakh) metres in above-40 years category in Kolkata.

Finance Secy gets one-month extension till Feb-end

The government extended the service of Finance Secretary Ajay Narayan Jha by a month till February-end. He was to retire on January 31.

Manu Sawhney named as new ICC CEO

The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the appointment of Manu Sawhney as its new Chief Executive Officer.

  • Sawhney, the former CEO of Singapore Sports Hub and Managing Director of ESPN Star Sports, will join the organisation next month before formally taking over the reins from David Richardson in July following the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Fields Medal-Winning Mathematician passes away

Sir Michael Atiyah, a British mathematician who received the 1966 Fields Medal, also known as the 'Nobel for Mathematics,' passed away at the age of 89. Atiyah was best known for his co-development of a branch of mathematics called topological K-theory and the Atiyah-Singer index theorem.

Veteran Malayalam film director Rajendran passes away

Veteran filmmaker and chairman of Kerala State Film Development Corporation Lenin Rajendran has passed away. He was 67 and was under treatment for liver ailments.

Senior Maharashtra Congress leader Shivajirao passes away

Senior Congress leader, a permanent invitee of All India Congress Committee (AICC) and former chairman of Maharashtra Legislative Council Shivajirao Deshmukh passed away following brief illness.
