Women to get 20% jobs in Military Police, says Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

The government has decided to induct women for the first time in Personnel Below Officer Rank, PBOR, role in Corps of Military Police. In a tweet yesterday, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, the women will be inducted in graded manner to eventually comprise 20 per cent of total Corps of Military Police.

Housing, Urban Affairs Ministry to organise 'Shehri Samridhi Utsav' from Feb 1 to 15

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is organising a fortnight of events named Shehri Samridhi Utsav from Feb 1 to 15 all over the country focusing on urban livelihoods.

  • The event aims at extending the outreach of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) to the poorest of poor and the most vulnerable.


TN government rolls out innovation policy to create 5,000 startups by 2023

Tamil Nadu government has rolled out the much-expected Startup and Innovation Policy 2018-2023 aimed at creating at least 5,000 startups, including 10 global high growth companies, by 2023.

  • The policy aims at enabling the State to emerge as the ‘knowledge capital and innovation hub of the country’, besides attracting entrepreneurs and investors across the globe.

Unesco names Rio de Janeiro as 'World Capital of Architecture' for 2020

The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (Unesco) has named the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro as the World Capital of Architecture for 2020.

  • Having defeated Paris and Melbourne, Rio will be the first city to receive the title under a programme launched together by Unesco and the International Union of Architects (UIA) in November 2018.

  • The World Capital of Architecture initiative underscores the common commitment of UNESCO and the UIA to preserve architectural heritage in the urban context.


China's economic growth hits 28-year low of 6.6%

China announced that its economy cooled down in the last quarter of 2018, recording a growth rate of 6.6 per cent, which is the slowest in the last 28 years.

World's 26 richest people own as much as poorest 50%: Oxfam

Twenty-six richest billionaires own as many assets as the 3.8 billion people who make up for the poorest half of the planets population, according to a report by British charity Oxfam.

NCLT approves Tata Teleservices merger with Bharti Airtel

The Delhi-bench of National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved the merger of financially-stressed Tata Teleservices with Bharti Airtel.

India to be global growth leader in 2019-20: IMF

The International Monetary Fund's (IMF) World Economic Outlook Update released by chief economist Gita Gopinath recently said that India's economy is expected to grow by 7.5 per cent in the 2019-20 fiscal year, keeping an upward trajectory as the rest of the world slumps.

  • India will continue to be the world's fastest growing major economy, the report said.

  • The IMF's flagship report said that India's growth was estimated to be 7.3 per cent for the current fiscal year and forecast to rise to 7.7 per cent in 2020-21.

Saurashtra Breaks the record for Highest Run Chase in Ranji Trophy History

Saurashtra has created history in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2018-19. The team went on to chase 372 in the second Quarter Final against Uttar Pradesh while playing at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Cricket Stadium, Lucknow. Saurashtra went past the record of Assam which had chased down 371.

New Delhi: Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and Sanjiv Khanna were sworn in as Supreme Court judges by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. Maheshwari was sworn in first, followed by Khanna.

Aparna Kumar becomes first female IPS Officer to reach South Pole

Aparna Kumar has become the first woman IPS DIG and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officer to successfully complete the South Pole expedition.

  • Ms Kumar has successfully reached the South Pole after covering 111 kilometres of walking on the snow. She also carried equipment weighing 35 Kilograms along with her. She has already scaled the top six mountain peaks of the six continents of the globe.

Eminent neurologist Jagjit Chopra passes away

Padma Bhushan winning neurologist Jagjit Singh Chopra has passed away at the age of 84. He was awarded life-time achievement award by the World Federation of Neurology (HQ - London, UK) in 2017.

Siddaganga seer Shivakumara Swami passes away at 111

Shivakumara Swami, a highly revered seer and practitioner of the Lingayat-Veerashaiva faith of Lingayatism, passed away at the age of 111.

  • The pontiff of Sree Siddaganga Matha was being treated for a lung infection which he developed after an operation on December 8.
