India Singapore to mark 25 years of SIMBEX with grand military drills

The 25th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) kicked off with gusto as frontline ships of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy and those of the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN) made their entry into the waters at Port Blair.

  • SIMBEX 2018 is the largest edition since 1994 in terms of scale and complexity. The naval exercise is slated to be held across Indian waters, with the initial harbour phase being held at Port Blair from November 10 to 12 followed by Sea Phase from November 12 to 16 in the Andaman Sea.

  • A Silver Jubilee Commemoration Ceremony, various professional and training interactions, 10 km 'Friendship Run' during the Annual Vizag-Navy Marathon, social evening and joint cultural programmes would be held during the harbour phases to commemorate the 25th anniversary.

Cabinet decides to open central tribal university in Andhra Pradesh

The Cabinet approved setting up of a Central Tribal University in Andhra Pradesh.
The 'Central Tribal University of Andhra Pradesh' will be set up in Relli village of Vizianagaram district as provided under the 13th schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.

  • The cabinet has also approved Rs 420 crore for the first phase expenditure towards establishment of the university.

Reserve Bank of India plans on setting up payments ombudsman

The Reserve Bank of India is likely to establish an ombudsman for digital payments by March to take the load off the increasing number of complaints currently being handled by the banking ombudsman.

  • The central bank is also trying to draw up a framework to collect information on the various types of frauds that are being reported in the overall payments space.

  • The increasing volume of complaints involving digital payments being received by the offices of the banking ombudsman and the large number of prepaid payment instruments issued by banks and non-bank issuers have necessitated establishment of a separate ombudsman for digital transactions.










BUSINESS & ECONOMY


Unemployment rate in India at 6.9%, a 2-year high

Unemployment rate in the country rose to 6.9% in October, the highest in two years, according to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy. Worse still, the labour participation rate, a measure of the proportion of adults willing to work fell to 42.4%, the lowest since January 2016.

  • The count of the unemployed persons actively looking for jobs almost doubled to 29.5 million in October 2018 from a low of 14 million in July 2017, CMIE said.


UN World Food Programme, Alibaba Group partnered to eliminate hunger

The UN World Food Programme and Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group have formed a strategic partnership to support efforts eliminate hunger globally by 2030.

  • Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba, will work with WFP to develop a digital "World Hunger Map". The map will monitor global hunger and operations to end the scourge by 2030.

Asian C'ships: Shooters Saurabh Chaudhary, Manu Bhaker script history



India's teenage shooting sensation Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker clinched the gold medal at the 10m Air Pistol mixed team event on the last day of the Asian Airgun Championships in Kuwait.

  • The duo beat the Chinese pair of Wang Xiaoyu and Hong Shuqi in the final and created a new World Record (junior), scoring a total of 485.4 points, shattering an earlier record of 483.


ICC Women's World T20: Harmanpreet Kaur becomes first Indian woman to score T20I century



Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur slammed her maiden T20 century during India’s opening match of Group B in the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 against New Zealand in Providence Stadium, Guyana.

  • Harmanpreet also became the first Indian woman to score a century in T20I. She is now the third player in world cricket to score a T20I International century.


Rohit Sharma becomes first batsman to hit four T20I hundreds



Indian opener Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to hit four centuries in T20 Internationals during the Lucknow clash against the West Indies, overtaking New Zealand cricketer Colin Munro, who has scored three centuries.

  • The 31-year-old opener also became the country's leading run-scorer in T20Is during the same clash overtaking Indian skipper Virat Kohli.

  • Sharma also became the third batsman to complete 1,000 ODI runs in 2018 after Virat Kohli and Johny Bairstow.

Competition Commission gets new Chairperson



The Competition Commission of India (CCI) said Ashok Kumar Gupta, a retired IAS officer of the 1981-batch Tamil Nadu cadre, has been appointed as its new Chairperson, replacing Sudhir Mital.

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister as its Chairman, decides appointments to several top posts under the Government of India.

Social Media Summit and Awards-2018 kicks off at Vijayawada

India's biggest social media summit, 'Social Media Summit and Awards-2018', kicked off in Vijayawada. The second edition of the two-day summit (November 9-10), powered by the Department of Tourism, Andhra Pradesh, has been organised by Vibri Media.

  • The summit discussed different facets of social media in terms of growth, knowledge, awareness, use cases, policy and regulation. Indian humanoid robot, Mitra was a special attraction at the event.


Super 30 founder Anand Kumar honoured with education award ‘Global Education Award’ in Dubai

Mathematician and Super 30 founder Anand Kumar will be awarded for his “pioneering” contributions to the field of education and illuminating the lives of many talented students. Kumar will be honoured with ‘Global Education Award’ on November 8 by ‘Malabar Gold & Diamonds’, flagship company of Malabar Group, a leading Indian business conglomerate.

  • Anand is a well known mathematician whose Super 30 is hailed for facilitating students from poor background crack IIT entrance exams by providing free food, lodging and teaching.


Arunima Sinha, world’s first Indian woman amputee to scale Everest gets honourary doctorate in UK



Arunima Sinha, the Indian mountaineer who became the world's first woman amputee to climb Mount Everest in 2013, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by a prestigious UK university for her inspirational achievements. 

  • Sinha was conferred with the honorary doctorate by the University of Strathclyde at a graduation ceremony in Glasgow. She was honoured in the Barony Hall for her inspirational achievements in mountaineering. 










OBITUARIES


Veteran PTI Srivastava journalist passes away

K P S Srivastava, a veteran PTI journalist, passed away after a brief illness. He was 93. Srivastava worked his way up from a reporter at Lucknow PTI to become its Editor in the 1980s.

  • During his tenure as a Special Correspondent, he covered the Congress party and prime ministers starting from Jawaharlal Nehru.

International Day of Radiology

The International Day of Radiology (IDoR) is an annual event promoting the role of medical imaging in modern healthcare. It is celebrated on November 8 each year, and coincides with the anniversary of the discovery of x-rays.
IDoR 2018 marks the 123rd anniversary of the 1895 discovery of the X-ray by German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen.

  • With a changing theme each year, the focus for 2018 is "Cardiac Imaging" aiming to highlight he importance of the role radiologist in cardiac care play in the diagnosis, pre-procedure work and follow up of patients.


National Cancer Awareness Day

National Cancer Awareness Day will be observed across the country on November 7 every year, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced. Vardhan, who declared the Regional Cancer Centre in Thiruvananthapuram as upgraded into the State Cancer Institute, said there were 2.9 million cases of cancer in the country with 1.1 million new cases being reported annually.
