UN issues diya stamps to celebrate Diwali



The UN Postal System has issued two stamps with diyas in celebration of Diwali as "the quest for the triumph of good over evil". The stamps are in the $1.15 denomination, which is the basic rate for international air mail letters. They are sold in sheets with 10 stamps and stickers and a large picture of the UN headquarters lit up for Diwali.

  • The stamps had been officially released last month and are now available at the UN headquarters post office and online.

India elected as Member of ITU Council for another 4-year term

India has been elected as a member of the International Telecommunications Union Council (ITU) for another 4-year term - from 2019 to 2022. The elections to the council were held during the ongoing ITU Plenipotentiary Conference 2018 at Dubai, UAE. 

  • India secured 165 votes and ranked third among the 13 countries elected to the council from the Asia-Australasia region, and eighth among the 48 countries elected to the council globally.

  • The ITU has 193 member states who elect representatives to the council.

PM to inaugurate Ring Road and Babatpur Airport Road in Varanasi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate two important national highways in Varanasi on November 12, having a total length of 34 kilometres and constructed at a cost of Rs 1,571.95 crore.

  • The 16.55 km Varanasi Ring Road Phase-I has been completed at a cost of Rs 759.36 crore, while the work of four-laning and construction of 17.25 km Babatput-Varanasi road on NH-56 has cost Rs 812.59 crore. The roads have been constructed by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) under Bharatmala programme.

  • The Babatpur Airport highway will link Varanasi to the airport and go on to Jaunpur, Sultanpur and Lucknow.

  • The Ring Road, with two Road Over Bridges and a flyover, will provide a way for traffic on NH 56 (Lucknow-Varanasi), NH 233 ( Azamgarh-Varanasi), NH 29 ( Gorakhpur-Varanasi ) and Ayodhya - Varanasi highways to bypass Varanasi city, thereby reducing traffic congestion in the city.


WCD launches online portal to promote women farmers and entrepreneurs

The Women and Child Development Ministry has set up an online marketing portal for unique organic products of the women farmers and entrepreneurs from across the country, besides serving as an e-platform to bring them together and promote and celebrate their achievements.

  • Named "Mahila-E-Haat", the portal was launched ahead of the "Women of India National Organic Festival, 2018" which was organised by the ministry to promote women entrepreneurs.


Andhra Pradesh gets Rs 1,250 Cr World Bank loan for agriculture project in climate vulnerable districts

Andhra Pradesh got around Rs 1,255 crore World Bank loan assistance for a project aiming at enhancing agricultural productivity. The central government, state government and World Bank signed the loan agreement for a $172.20 million project to enhance agricultural productivity, profitability and climate resilience of about two lakh poor and marginalised farmers in the state.

  • The AP Integrated Irrigation and Agriculture Transformation Project (APIIATP) will be implemented in rural areas largely dependent upon rain-fed agriculture.

China unveils 'most advanced' stealth drone: Report



China has unveiled its new-generation stealth combat unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), stated to be the most advanced drone developed so far by the country. The UAV - CH7 was unveiled at the Air Show China 2018 in Zhuhai, South China's Guangdong Province.

  • The CH7 makes China the second country, following the US, to produce high-altitude long-endurance combat UAVs with advanced penetration capabilities.

  • The CH7 can intercept radar electronic signals, and simultaneously detect, verify and monitor high-value targets, such as hostile command stations, missile launch sites and naval vessels.

Elavenil-Hriday shoot gold at Asian Championship

India's 10m rifle mixed team pairing of Elavenil Valarivan and Hriday Hazarika struck gold at the 11th Asian Championship with a junior world record score in the final in Kuwait city. Mehuli Ghosh and Arjun Babuta also won bronze in the same event.

Bajwa shoots historic skeet gold at Asian Shotgun Championship



Angad Vir Singh Bajwa shot to gold with a world record score in the men's skeet final of the 8th Asian Shotgun Championship, becoming the first Indian skeet shooter to win a continental or world level event.

  • Angad shot a perfect 60 out of 60 in the final round to claim top spot ahead of China's Di Jin who shot 58. UAE's Saeed Al Maktoum won bronze with a score of 46.


Rohit Sharma overtakes Virat Kohli to become India's highest run scorer in T20Is



Indian opener Rohit Sharma overtook skipper Virat Kohli to become India's highest run-getter in Twenty20 Internationals during the second match of the three-match series against the West Indies at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee International Stadium in Lucknow. Playing his 86th T20I, Rohit surpassed Kohli's tally of 2102 runs with 2203 runs.

  • The 31-year-old batsman, who is also leading the side in absence of Kohli, leapfrogged New Zealand's Brendon McCullum and Pakistan's Shoaib Malik to take the second spot in the list of most runs in the shortest format of the game.
    Martin Guptill of New Zealand leads the chart with 2271 runs in 75 matches.

‘The Fire Burns Blue: A History of Women’s Cricket in India’,a book on history of women’s cricket



A book on history of women's cricket in India will hit the stands on November 30. The book, titled 'The Fire Burns Blue: A History of Women's Cricket in India', is co-authored by sports journalists Karunya Keshav and Sidhanta Pathak.

  • It would talk about the numerous "twist and turns" of women's cricket, including the early days of pioneers like Diana Eduljee and Shantha Rangaswamy in the early '70s and the stars of today like Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur.

  • The book will be launched as part of the publishing house's new imprint, Westland Sport.

Author Ravi Subramanian, whose stories are set against the backdrop of the financial services industry, writes among other things the relations between the RBI and the finance ministry in his new book.
