16th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Summit and 13th East Asia Summit starts in Singapore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to take part in the 16th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)-India Breakfast Summit, followed by the 13th East Asia Summit in Singapore.

  • The 13th East Asia Summit will be held in two segments- the East Asia Lunch Retreat followed by the EAS in a plenary setting. Prime Minister Modi will emplane for India after the EAS' conclusion.

  • The Prime Minister became the first head of government to deliver the keynote address at Singapore Fintech Festival. He then launched the Application Programming Interface Exchange (APIX) with the Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore T. Shanmugaratnam.


RBI to issue Rs 75 commemorative coin to mark 75th anniversary of Tricolour hoisting by Bose



The government will release a Rs 75 coin to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose hoisting the Tricolour for the first time at Port Blair.
The Ministry of Finance has issued a notification regarding the release of the Rs 75 coin along with its specifications.

  • On December 30, 1943, Bose, who raised the Indian National Army (INA) to fight against the British, had hoisted the Tricolour for the first time at Cellular Jail, Port Blair.

  • A numeral 75th along with inscription "anniversary" will be depicted below the portrait. The coin will carry an inscription saying 'First Flag Hoisting Day' in both Devnagari script and English.


India to top US as 2nd-largest carbon spewer from power: International Energy Agency

India will overtake the US to become the world’s second-biggest emitter of carbon dioxide from the power sector before 2030 as the nation’s electricity demand skyrockets, the International Energy Agency said in its latest World Energy Outlook.

  • Carbon dioxide emissions from India’s power sector are expected to rise nearly 80 per cent by 2040. China will remain the biggest emitter.

World Customs Organisation's regional meet begins in Jaipur

A four-day regional meeting of the World Customs Organisation began in Jaipur with representatives of 33 member countries of Asia attending it. The meeting is slated to deliberate upon various issues including the steps required for the capacity building and reforms in customs.

  • The meeting is being jointly chaired by WCO Deputy Secretary General Ricardo Travino and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs Chairman S Ramesh.


Agriculture Ministry Launches NCDC’s 'Yuva Sahakar Scheme'

Indian Agriculture Minister Shri Radha Mohan Singh launched a-Rs 1000 crore start-up scheme to encourage the young generation to join cooperative business ventures in agriculture and related sectors.
Apart from a subsidy for the industrialists or entrepreneurs, the latest scheme also provides an interesting grant of 2 percent/ annum.

  • National Cooperative Development Corporation or NCDC has brought the Yuva Sahakar-Cooperative Enterprise Support and Innovation Scheme. The scheme will also be linked to Rs 1000 crore Cooperative Start-up and Innovation Fund (CSIF) formed by NCDC.

  • The scheme would offer more incentives for cooperatives of the North-East region, aspirational regions, and cooperatives that have women members, schedule tribes, scheduled castes or people with disabilities.


HRD Ministry Launches LEAP and ARPIT Programmes For Higher Education faculty

A unique initiative of online professional development of 15 lakh higher education faculty using the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform SWAYAM, Annual Refresher Programme in Teaching (ARPIT) was launched recently.

  • The ministry of human resource development also launched Leadership for Academicians Programme (LEAP) which will be implemented through 15 top institutions like IITs, TISS, DU, JNU and IISERs and also include a week training in a foreign campus of the likes of Harvard University, Oxford University, Purdue University and NTU Singapore, among others.


Andhra govt reveals Amaravati art-inspired state emblem



The Andhra Pradesh government has finalised its new emblem for official use, five years after the state's bifurcation in 2014. The state emblem, inspired by the Amaravati School of Art, consists of "Dhamma Chakka" - "the Wheel of Law" embellished with a ring of Triratnas alternating with pinnate leaves and precious stones.
The National Emblem is placed at the bottom of the emblem.

RBI imposes fine of Rs 3 crore each on Deutsche Bank, J&K Bank

The Reserve Bank said it has imposed a penalty of over Rs 3 crore on Deutsche Bank for non-compliance of various norms, including asset classification and KYC.
The RBI also slapped a fine of Rs 3 crore on state-owned Jammu and Kashmir Bank for violating similar norms.

  • RBI said the penalties on these two banks have been imposed taking into account the failure of the banks to adhere to the directions issued by it.


Ashok Chawla resigns as Yes Bank's non-executive chairman



Ashok Chawla, Yes Bank’s non-executive chairman, stepped down with immediate effect. Yes Bank, the fourth largest private sector bank, has been in amidst of a transition as it is looking to find a successor to promoter-cum chief executive Rana Kapoor, who’s term is slated to end on January 31, 2019.

Women’s World Boxing Championships Begins in Delhi

The Women's World Boxing Championships begin in Delhi. This tenth edition of the tournament is set to be the biggest ever as more than 300 boxers from 72 countries will be taking part.

  • MC Mary Kom will be aiming for a historic sixth gold at the event, which is being hosted by India for the first time since 2006 when the country had topped the table with four gold, one silver and three bronze medals.


Former India Pacer Munaf Patel Announces His Retirement From Cricket



Former India fast bowler Munaf Patel has decided to announce his retirement from all forms of the game after 15 years of competitive cricket. He was a part of the 2011 World Cup winning side that lifted the trophy Mumbai.

Ex-England And Chelsea Midfielder Joe Cole Retires



Former England midfielder Joe Cole announced his retirement after making more than 700 appearances for seven clubs including West Ham and Chelsea.

  • Cole was part of England's so-called "Golden Generation", playing alongside David Beckham, Wayne Rooney etc.

Apple Appoints Nokia Veteran Ashish Chowdhary to Lead India Operations

Apple has appointed Ashish Chowdhary, Chief Customer Operations Officer at Nokia Networks, as its India operation head. Chowdhary will join as Apple India head from January next year.

  • Apple India is currently under Michel Coulomb who took over from Sanjay Kaul in December last year.

World Philosophy Day

World Philosophy Day was proclaimed by UNESCO to be celebrated every 3rd Thursday of November. It was first celebrated on 21 November 2002.  In 2018, World Philosophy Day observed on 15 November.

  • By celebrating World Philosophy Day each year, UNESCO underlines the enduring value of philosophy for the development of human thought, for each culture and for each individual.


West Bengal Government Observes Rosogolla Day on November 14

West Bengal government has decided to observe 'Rosogolla Day' on November 14, to commemorate the first anniversary of the state's famous sweet getting Geographical Indication or GI tag as 'Bengal's Rosogolla'.

  • Different varieties of rosogollas would be showcased in stalls of the 'Mishti Hub' (Sweetmeat Hub), set up in one part of the Eco Park in Kolkata's New Town area.
    The Eco Park is managed by the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO).
