INDO-Russian Joint Exercise INDRA 2018 held in Jhansi

India and Russia will hold joint military exercises in Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh from November 18.
"Exercise Indra 2018" will begin at the Babina Field Firing Ranges.

  • The aim of the exercise is to practice joint planning and conduct enhance interoperability of the two Armies in peace keeping and enforcement environment under UN aegis.


Kerala introduces new Open Online Learning Programme: ‘KOOL’

The Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education (KITE) has rolled out KOOL, its Online Open Learning training platform. The platform can be used to train teachers, students and the general public.

  • KOOL has been designed in a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) model, which is becoming popular worldwide.


Qaumi Ekta Week begins to promote communal harmony

Qaumi Ekta Week will be observed across the country from 19 November to foster and reinforce the spirit of communal harmony and national integration. The observation of the week will help to highlight the inherent strength and resilience of the nation to withstand actual and potential threats to the eclectic and secular fabric of the country.

  • As part of the week-long programmes, 19 November will be observed as National Integration Day. The last day of the Qaumi Ekta Week will be observed as Conservation Day.

  • The National Foundation for Communal Harmony, an autonomous organisation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, organises Communal Harmony Campaign coinciding with the Qaumi Ekta Week and observes the Communal Harmony Flag Day on 25th November.

Morocco unveils Africa's first ever high speed Train Line

French President Emmanuel Macron and Morocco's King Mohammed VI have inaugurated Morocco's first high-speed rail line, the first ever such line in Africa.
Known as the LGV, it will connect the economic hubs of Tangier and Casablanca in 2 hours 10 minutes at a speed of up to 320 kph (199 mph) instead of almost 5 hours on a regular train.

  • France financed 51 percent of the project, Morocco 28 percent and the remaining 21 percent was provided by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

  • The king named the first line Al Boraq after a mythical winged creature that transported the prophets to the heavens.

Karnataka Bank launches CASA campaign 'KBL SB - TASC'

Karnataka Bank has launched Current & Savings Accounts campaign (CASA) of FY 2018-19 and introduced a new SB scheme 'KBL SB - TASC' a specialized product for Trusts/Associates/Societies/Clubs.

  • Under this nationwide campaign starting from November 15, 2018 to February 28, 2019, Bank intends to open more than 4.18 lakh Current & Savings accounts by active involvement of its 8000 plus work force in all the 823 branches across India.

Myntra, Jabong to merge

Online fashion retailer Myntra said it will completely integrate its sister company Jabong, which will continue to operate as a separate brand. Myntra chief executive officer Ananth Narayanan will lead the Myntra-Jabong team.

  • Flipkart had acquired online fashion portal Myntra in 2014 and Myntra had acquired Jabong in 2016.

Zverev beats Djokovic to win ATP Finals crown



Alexander Zverev defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in London to win the ATP Finals championship and claim the most important title of his budding career.

  • The 21-year-old German is the youngest player in nine years to reach the final of tennis elite season-ending event.

Jalaj Srivastava appointed new IWAI Chairman

Jalaj Srivastava, a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, has been appointed the chairman of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) which comes under the Union Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, currently headed by Nitin Gadkari.

Golfer Shubhankar becomes first Indian to win European Tour Rookie of the Year award



Young golfer Shubhankar Sharma capped a dream season on the European Tour by becoming the first Indian to win the tours Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award. He achieved the feat soon after finishing tied 41st at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship event in Dubai.

Asia’s 1st Woman neurosurgeon TS Kanaka passes away



Asia’s first woman neurosurgeon, T.S. Kanaka, passed away in Chennai after a brief illness. She was 86. She was known to have inspired many women to take to the field of neurosurgery in the country. She also served as an army medical officer for two years during the India-China war.

Mardal maestro in Odisi music Banamali Maharana passes away



Eminent Mardal maestro Guru Banamali Moharana passed away while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 83.

  • He founded the Mardal Academy and the 'Tala Badya Utsav'. The festivals dedicated to classical music were his brain child.










IMPORTANT DAYS


World Toilet Day 2018

Every year, November 19 is celebrated as the World Toilet Day to tackle the problem of open defecation across the globe. Every year the day is celebrated with a unique theme and this year the theme is 'When nature calls, we have to listen and act.'

  • The theme urges people to use toilets, especially nature-based sanitation solutions like composting toilets that treat human waste and convert it into fertilisers.


World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims takes place on the third Sunday in November every year as the appropriate acknowledgment of victims of road traffic crashes and their families. This year it was celebrated on November 18.

  • It is also a day to thank traffic-crash emergency services and first responders, while reflecting on the tremendous burden that crashes and resultant injuries and fatalities make on economies, health care systems, and most importantly people, around the world.

  • The theme of the 2018 World Day of Remembrance is “Roads have Stories.”
