PM Modi launches support, outreach programme for MSME

Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, launched the Government’s Support and Outreach Initiative for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. The initiative will provide Small and Medium Enterprises easier access to credit, markets, improved cash flows and online loans up to Rs 1 crore in just 59 minutes.

  • Besides Delhi, similar launch programmes will be held at 100 locations across the country, where Union Ministers, and Ministers from State Governments will be present.

  • This outreach and support programme, which will run for the next 100 days, covering the entire country, is expected to provide even greater synergy to the efforts being made for this sector.

  • Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley and the Minister of State (I/C) for MSME, Giriraj Singh, are among those who will be present on the occasion.


Decommissioned carrier INS Viraat to become a floating museum

The Maharashtra state cabinet on cleared the decks for the Navy’s longest-serving aircraft carrier, INS Viraat, now retired, to be converted into India’s first-ever moored maritime museum-cum-marine adventure centre.

  • As per the Maharashtra government’s Rs 852-crore plan for Viraat, the ship’s conversion will be on publicprivate-partnership (PPP) basis.

  • The ship is the world’s oldest aircraft carrier, according to the Indian Navy, which bought it in 1986 and recommissioned it a year later. At present, Viraat is at Mumbai’s Naval dockyard after its decommissioning in 2017.


IAF Seminar On Emerging Trends In Aviation Engineering And Logistics (AVIAMAT – 2018)

Indian Air Force is organising a two day seminar on ‘Emerging Trends in Aviation Engineering and Logistics’ (AVIAMAT-2018) at Air Force Auditorium, Subroto Park, New Delhi. The focus of the seminar is usable emerging and futuristic innovative aviation technologies.

  • The AVIAMAT Seminar will see participation of aviation experts from three services, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) and start ups from the private sector.

Nearly half a billion people in Asia-Pacific undernourished: UN

Nearly half a billion people in Asia are hungry and lack access to adequate nourishing food, including in the region's largest cities, said a new report by the UN food security agency. An estimated 486 million people remain undernourished in Asia, according to a report launched by UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

  • The report cited a survey in Bangkok that found more than one-third of children were not receiving a "minimally acceptable diet". In Pakistan, the figure was 96 per cent.

  • It said that many children in Asia's urban areas were at an increasing risk of obesity, with diets relying on "cheap and convenient unhealthy processed foods".

Japan to lend Rs 1,817 cr for hydel power project in Bengal

India and Japan signed a Rs 1,817 crore loan agreement for the construction of the Turga pumped storage hydel power project at Purulia in West Bengal. The project will contribute to the industrial development and living standards in the state.

  • The Japanese Official Development Assistance loan agreement was signed in New Delhi between Ministry of Finance Additional Secretary C.S. Mohapatra and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) New Delhi Chief Representative Katsuo Matsumoto.

Azhar Ali Announces Retirement From ODIs



Senior Pakistan batsman Azhar Ali announced his retirement from limited overs cricket in order to concentrate fully on Test cricket. He has been one of Pakistan’s most prolific run-scorers in Test cricket as he scored a triple century and a double hundred in Tests in the UAE and Australia in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Qatar To Host World Corporate Games in 2019

Qatar will host the 23rd edition of the World Corporate Games next year, which will provide an opportunity for corporations around the world to showcase their competitive prowess through sports. This is the first time the World Corporate Games will be held in the Middle East.

  • The World Corportate Games, established nearly 30 years ago, aims to bring together, the local, regional and international business sporting community.

Vietnam will host the F1 race in 2020

Vietnam will host a Formula One race in April 2020. Vietnam will be only the third Southeast Asian country to host a Formula One race, after Malaysia and Singapore. The race will be hosted in the capital Hanoi

  • A Vietnamese grand prix would mark the first new entry on the F1 calendar since US group Liberty Media took over the running of the sport at the beginning of 2017.

Malayalam writer Mukundan selected for Ezhuthachan award



Noted Malayalam novelist and short story writer M Mukundan has been selected for the Kerala government's highest literary award 'Ezhuthachan Puraskaram' for this year. The 76-year old writer has been chosen for his overall contributions to the Malayalam literature.

  • Considered as one of the pioneers of modern Malayalam literature, Mukundan is known as "Mayyazhiyude Kathakaran".
