India to host 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health in 2019

The 50th Union World Conference on Lung Health will be held in Hyderabad next year. The conference 'Ending the Emergency: Science, Leadership, Action' which will be held from October 30 to November 2 next year, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease said.

  • The meeting culminated in a political declaration signed by world leaders committed to ending tuberculosis by 2030. The Indian government has committed to eliminate TB in India by 2025.

  • The conference's theme resonates with TB, but it will also raises awareness on all threats to lung health, including air pollution and tobacco abuse.


India second-fastest growing innovator among major Asian countries: Report

With patent publication nearly doubling in a decade, India is now the second-fastest growing innovator after China among major Asian countries, a new report said. 
India is fourth among the major Asian countries in terms of overall patent publication volume, and second in terms of growth rate, said the "India Innovation Report" by Philadelphia-headquartered Clarivate Analytics.

  • Patent activity in India is growing at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.8 per cent in patenting activity over the past five years, second only to China which is growing at a CAGR of 15.5 per cent, among the top Asian countries.


Malaria Cases Declined By 24% In India: WHO Report

Marking significant progress in the fight against malaria, India recorded nearly 24% decline in cases in a year between 2016 and 2017, the only one among the 11 highest-burden countries to achieve so, says the latest World Malaria Report published by World Health Organisation.

  • India plans to eliminate malaria by 2027, three years ahead of the global target and has also formulated an action plan.

  • The 10 highest burden countries in Africa reported increase in cases of malaria in 2017 compared with 2016. Of these, Nigeria, Madagascar and Democratic Republic of Congo had the highest estimated increase.


Sangai Festival 2018 begins in Manipur

Manipur Tourism is once again returning with one of their most important yearly event, the Manipur Sangai Festival. Celebrated each year, this is one of the most popular festivals of India.

  • Manipur Sangai Festival 2018 will be celebrated from November 21 to November 30, and it was first celebrated in the year 2010. The festival is going to be held at three separate venues this year- Keibul Lamjao, Imphal, and Mao. 

  • It has grown into a world-class festival that celebrates the culture and tradition of Manipur. The festival has been named after the popular brow-antlered Sangai deer that is known to be gentle.


Carpet city Bhadohi gets 'export excellence' tag

Known for its hand-woven carpets around the world, Bhadohi received a major boost as the government has extended the 'export excellence' tag to it.
Under the 'Towns of Export Excellence' tag, carpet makers of the city will get financial assistance from the central government to procure modern machines, improve export infrastructure, and organise fairs and exhibitions in different parts of the world to attract global buyers.

  • The status was granted by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), under the commerce ministry, an official said. Bhadohi, small township situated on the banks the river Ganges in Uttar Pradesh, will be the 37th town to get this status.


Bengaluru pays the highest salaries in India: Study

IT capital Bengaluru pays the highest salaries followed by Mumbai and Delhi in India. The report is based on a salary study done by LinkedIn.
Bengaluru emerged as the city where the weighted average compensation was the highest, at Rs 12 lakh, followed by Mumbai and Delhi-NCR at Rs 9 lakh each. Hyderabad stood at about Rs 8.5 lakh and Chennai at Rs 6.3 lakh.

President Kovind unveils Gandhi statue in Sydney

On the second day of this three-day visit to Australia, President Ramnath Kovind unveiled a statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Jubilee Park in the town of Parramatta, which is a bustling suburb of Sydney.

  • The unveiling of the statue is part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the Father of the Nation, which is being observed in different parts of the world.

  • Moments after ribbon-cutting to unveil the statue, President Kovind presented a book titled 'Hind Swaraj' to Australian Prime Minister Morrison and Parramatta's Mayor Wilson. The book was penned by Gandhiji in 1909.


12th World Congress on Mountain Medicine held in Kathmandu

12th World Congress on Mountain Medicine started in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The theme of 4 day congress is “Mountain Medicine in the Heart of the Himalayas”
The biennial event mainly focuses on science and research aspects of high altitude medicine. It will also include practical workshops related to trekking, expedition medicine and clinical education.

  • More than 400 participants from 40 countries, including India, China, Japan, USA, England and Italy are attending the congress. The flagship event of the International Society for Mountain Medicine (ISMM) is being held first time in Nepal and hosted by Mountain Medicine Society of Nepal (MMSN).


Nepal's largest exhibition 'ConMac 2018' starts in Bhaktapur

Nepal's largest exhibition on construction equipment and technology "ConMac 2018" has started in Bhaktapur near Kathmandu. More than 150 business exhibitors and companies from India including JCB, L&T, Hyundai, Caterpillar and Tata Hitachi have showcased their products and services at the exhibition.

  • The exhibition aims to further enhance high level engagements between construction industry of the two countries.

'India Skills Report 2019': employability increases from 37% to 47.38% in 5 years

Millie Bobby Brown named UNICEF’s youngest-ever Goodwill Ambassador



The United Nations children’s agency UNICEF appointed Millie Bobby Brown, the star of hit Netflix series “Stranger Things”, as its youngest ever goodwill ambassador and the 14-year-old had a message for world leaders: “Listen to us.”

  • She pledged to speak out for millions of children and young people whose voices had been silenced.


SBM Bank India appoints Sidharth Rath as managing director & CEO

State Bank of Mauritius, which has received a licence as a scheduled commercial bank in India has appointed Sidharth Rath as managing director.

  • SBM Bank is the first foreign bank to set up a Wholly Owned Subsidiary (WOS), to provide universal banking service with a focus on Wholesale Banking, Trade Finance, Capital Market and Retail Banking.

  • Prior to this assignment, he was with Axis Bank as the Group Executive and Head, of Corporate, Transaction Banking and International Banking.

WCCB gets Asia Environment Enforcement Awards

The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) has been selected among the winners of the Asia Environment Enforcement Awards for its work in combating trans-boundary environmental crime, Union Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said. This is the second time in a row that the awards are being given by UN Environment to India.

  • WCCB is a statutory multi-disciplinary body established by the government under the Environment Ministry to combat organized wildlife crime in the country.

OBITUARIES


Orissa: Baishnab Parida passes away



Baishnab Parida, a former Member of Parliament (MP) and eminent Odiya writer, passed away at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. He was 77. Parida served as the Rajya Sabha MP from 2010 to 2016.

  • Parida was also a formidable figure of Odiya literature, authored as many as five books including 'Caste System in India' and 'Political Economy'.


India-born Pakistani poet Fahmida Riaz passes away



Noted India-born Pakistani poet and human rights activist Fahmida Riaz has passed away following a prolonged illness in Lahore, Pakistan. She was 73.

  • Riaz, who fled Pakistan during former military dictator Gen Zia-ul-Haq's rule and lived in self-exile in India for nearly seven years, always raised her voice for women rights and democracy in Pakistan.
