PM Modi announces ‘Bharat Ki Lakshmi’ campaignPrime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation through ‘Mann Ki Baat’, his monthly radio broadcast, on 29th September. He spoke about initiating a “Bharat Ki Lakshmi” campaign to honour the daughters and daughters-in-law who brought glory to their families, society and the country.
- He gave a clarion call to share photos of daughters' achievements by sharing them on social media, using the hashtag #BHARATKILAXMI.
The Central government has released the first advance installment of Rs 27.11 crore for Sultanpur Lodhi Smart City project, slated for launch by Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary Guru Nanak Dev.
- The estimated cost of the project under the Smart Cities Mission is Rs 271.11 crore, which is to be equally distributed between the Government of India and the state government.
Union Sports and Youth Affairs Ministry sanctioned Rs 7.87 crore as an out-of-pocket allowance for 2625 Khelo India (KI) athletes. These athletes are training in 99 Khelo India Academies and other academies across the country.
- These athletes were selected to train in various sporting disciplines under the Government's Khelo India Talent Development Scheme, which is a grassroot level talent identification and nurturing endeavour of the government.
- The sanction is for the period of October to December and is paid to each athlete as a sum of Rs 10,000 a month.
The date of linking Permanent Account Number (PAN) with Aadhaar has been extended from September 30 to December 31, said the government. Earlier also, the Centre had extended the deadline from March 31 to September 30.
- PAN is a 10-character alphanumeric identification number issued by Income Tax Department that links the financial transactions with an individual while Aadhaar is a 12-digit identification issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal announced that Midnapore in West Bengal became the 5000th railway station in the country to be Wi-Fi enabled.
- RailTel started the project of providing Wi-Fi facility at railway stations in January 2016 from Mumbai Central station in Maharashtra. It was the first station to have fast and free RailWire.
In a bid to provide fresh impetus to tourism, Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) announced its collaboration with social media giant Instagram in an exhibition. The hashtag #DiscoverAssam was also unveiled in the event.
- The exhibition featured a display of selected photographs of Assam already posted on Instagram and a workshop was also organised with tourism stakeholders like tour operators, hoteliers, students and entrepreneurs for learning to make the best use of Instagram for visual storytelling.
Marking the beginning of Sharath Ruthu, the nine-day floral festival of Telangana, Bathukamma has begun. This year the festival is being celebrated from September 28 to October 6.
- Bathukamma is a festival celebrated by the women on a grand scale.

Second Kalvari-class Submarine INS 'Khanderi' joins Indian Navy
India's second Kalvari-class Submarine INS 'Khanderi' was commissioned into the Indian Navy in a ceremony held at the Mazagon Docks in Mumbai by the Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
- The name Khanderi is inspired by the dreaded 'Sword Tooth Fish,' a deadly fish known to hunt whilst swimming close to the bottom of the ocean.
An Indian Airforce Mi-17 helicopter took part in the Indo-Thailand Joint exercise 'Maitree' at Umroi Military station in Meghalaya.
- The helicopter inserted mixed sticks comprised of Indian Army and Royal Thai Army soldiers into mock operational area.
In the middle of its two-month Chandrayaan-2 campaign, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) initiated ‘Project NETRA’ – an early warning system in space to detect debris and other hazards to Indian satellites.
- The project estimated to cost ₹400 crore, when in place, will give India its own capability in space situational awareness (SSA) like the other space powers — which is used to ‘predict’ threats from debris to Indian satellites.

Nepal: India builds new school in KathmanduIn the latest move to boost the education sector of Nepal, India has constructed a new building for the Kuleshwor Awas Secondary School in Kathmandu.
- The new school building constructed with Government of India's grant assistance of NRs. 38.60 million, is a three-storied building comprising 20 classrooms, separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls on each floor, underground water tank, septic tank and furniture.
The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) on Saturday hosted an international conference on Sindh in London, where the participants highlighted issues such as enforced disappearances of activists, human rights violations and forced conversion of religious minorities in Pakistan.

BIS sets up 'green' bond fund for central banksThe Bank of International Settlements has launched a fund to enable central banks around the world to invest in "green bonds", citing a growing demand for climate-friendly investments.
- The Basel-based BIS, considered the central bank for central banks, said the new fund would help "central banks to incorporate environmental sustainability objectives in the management of their reserves."

James's work 'Nireeswaran' bags Vayalar AwardMalayalam Writer V J James's novel 'Nireeswaran' (Atheist) has been selected for the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literature Award this year.
- The novel, revolving around the concepts of God and faith, was among the latest works by the author, who is working as an engineer in the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).

International Day for Universal Access to InformationSince 2016 UNESCO marks 28 September as the “International Day for Universal Access to Information” (IDUAI), following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57. The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society advocates into its current form beginning in 2012.
- The theme of 2019 International Day for Universal Access to Information is “Leaving No One Behind!”
World Rabies Day is celebrated annually on 28 September to raise awareness about rabies prevention and to highlight progress in defeating this horrifying disease.
- 28 September also marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, the French chemist and microbiologist, who developed the first rabies vaccine.
