'Mahatma Lives': UNESCO, DD join hands for TV show on Gandhi's 150th anniversary
Rarely heard audio clips of Mahatma Gandhi will be featured as part of an hour-long television programme jointly hosted by the UNESCO and Doordarshan to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.
  • The bilingual programme - 'Mahatma Lives'/'Bapu Zinda Hain' - will be telecast on October 1 at 10 pm and repeated on October 2 at 5 pm across the country on DD News.
Assam: 'Plants for Plastic' campaign launched in Bongaigaon distt
In Assam, in order to gradually collect and remove the harmful plastics from the eco- system Bongaigaon District administration has launched a campaign 'Plants for Plastic'. The campaign aims to encourage people to collect and remove plastic from their houses, commercial establishments and educational institutions.
  • Under this unique initiative, any person can deposit one kilogram plastic in the Municipality office and get a valuable sapling for free.
Kerala tops Niti Aayog’s School Education Quality Index
Kerala has retained their places as the best states in terms of school education in the country. The revelation came in the Niti Aayog’s School Education Quality Index (SEQI) for the year 2016-17 which was released recently. Tamil Nadu retained the second spot.
  • Among smaller States, Manipur emerged as the best performer, while Chandigarh topped the list of Union Territories.
Gandhi Film Festival to be organised in Mumbai
Film Division in association with India Tourism will organise a Gandhi Film Festival at JB Hall in Mumbai from 2nd to 6th October.
  • The festival as part of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary will showcase select films focussing on Swachh Bharat and non-violence.
  • The festival will be inaugurated by noted actor Darshan Jariwala on 2nd October.
6th Edition of International Conference MASCRADE 2019 Organised by FICCI in New Delhi
The 6th edition of International Conference Mascrade 2019 (Movement Against Smuggling and Counterfeit Trade) was held on 26-27, September 2019 in New Delhi.
  • The theme for MASCRADE 2019 was ‘Containing Counterfeiting, Smuggling and Piracy: A Winning Strategy’.

SBI becomes first Indian bank to have office in Australia’s Victoria
State Bank of India has opened its Melbourne office, becoming the first Indian bank to have a branch in the Australian state of Victoria.
  • The Melbourne office will assist the growing trade and investment relations between Victoria and India.


BUSINESS & ECONOMY

India's current account deficit narrows to 2 pc of GDP: RBI
India's current account deficit (CAD) narrowed to 14.3 billion dollars or two per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) during April to June, data released by the Reserve Bank of India showed.
  • This compared with 15.8 billion dollars or 2.3 per cent of the GDP in the same period a year ago.
Aegon Life partners Paytm for a Corporate Agency tie up
Seeking to increase insurance penetration, Aegon Life Insurance, pioneer of digital insurance in India, has joined hands with Paytm, India’s largest digital payments company, for a Corporate Agency tie up to offer comprehensive life insurance solutions. As a part of the tie up, Paytm will distribute Aegon Life products to its customers.

Bhavani Devi clinches silver in Belgium meet
Indian fencer C. A. Bhavani Devi clinched the silver medal in the women’s sabre individual category in the Tournoi satellite competition (World level) at Ghent, Belgium. Bhavani lost 15-10 to Anna Bashta of Azerbaijan in the final.

IAAF World C'ships: Fraser-Pryce wins fourth 100 metres world title
Jamaican sprint legend Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce won her fourth women's 100 metres world title in Doha in stunning style.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton won 2019 Russia F1 Grand Prix
Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes won the 2019 Russia F1 Grand Prix (Formula 1 GP) at Sochi Autodrom race track in Russia. Mercedes Valtteri Bottas (Finland) and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc (Monaco) won the second and third spot respectively.

APPOINTMENTS

KS Dhatwalia appointed PIB's Principal DG
Senior Indian Information Service officer, KS Dhatwalia, has been appointed as the Principal Director General of Press Information Bureau.
  • Mr. Dhatwalia, who will succeed Sitanshu Kar, will be the 28th Principal Spokesperson of the government. He will continue to hold the additional charge of Director General, Indian Institute of Mass Communication.
RBI appoints Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as administrator for PMC Bank
The Reserve Bank of India has superseded the Board of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank Limited, Mumbai and appointed Jai Bhagwan Bhoria as the bank’s administrator with all powers of the board. Jai Bhagwan Bhoria replaces S.Waryam Singh.

OBITUARIES

Grammy-winning opera star Jessye Norman passes away
Jessye Norman, the renowned international opera star whose passionate soprano voice won her four Grammy Awards, the National Medal of Arts and the Kennedy Center Honor, has passed away. She was 74.

INA veteran from Tamil Nadu V Ganesan passes away
Indian National Army (INA) veteran V Ganesan has passed away. He joined Netaji’s INA at the age of 18 and received six months of military training in Singapore.
  • While participating in the battle against the British Army in Myanmar, he was arrested and was imprisoned for 10 months in Yangon jail and was later repatriated to India.
