Punjab and Haryana High Court declares Animals as Legal Persons The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that all animals are legal persons entitled to legal rights like human beings.
  • The order was passed in a case where the Court was informed that 29 cows were packed in a cruel manner while being transported from Uttar Pradesh to Haryana. In response, Justice Sharma’s order emphasises that animals cannot be reduced to mere property. 
  • This includes a ban in using animals to pull vehicles in extreme weather, limits on loads and the number of people that animals are made to carry, limits on the distances that an animal is made to walk at a stretch, instructions on how to tether an animal to the vehicle it is made to pull and a ban on the use of spike sticks, harness and other sharp instruments to avoid injuring the animal.
India ranks 95 among 129 countries in global gender equality index India ranked 95th out of 129 countries in a new index that measures global gender equality looking at aspects such as poverty, health, education, literacy, political representation and equality at the workplace.
  • The Sustainable Development Goals Gender Index has been developed by UK-based Equal Measures 2030, a joint effort of regional and global organisations including African Women's Development and Communication Network, Asian-Pacific Resource and Research Centre for Women, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and International Women's Health Coalition.
  • Denmark was ranked at the first place and Chad at 129th place.

Jay-Z named world's first billionaire rapper by Forbes magazine American Jay-Z has been named the world’s first billionaire rapper in a new Forbes cover story. The magazine has claimed the 49-year-old’s empire “conservatively” totals $1bn after valuing his various ventures as well as any real estate and his art collection.
  • Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, is one of just a handful of billionaire entertainers and the first hip-hop artist to claim such a fortune.

Sidharth Rawat wins maiden ITF men’s Futures singles title Third seed Sidharth Rawat outplayed Rio Noguchi of Japan 7-5, 6-0 to clinch his maiden title in the $25,000 ITF men’s Futures tennis tournament. China confirmed as host of AFC Asian Cup 2023 China was confirmed as the host of the AFC Asian Cup 2023 at the AFC Extraordinary Congress in Paris. After South Korea dropped its bid last month, China was set to stage the 2023 edition of the Asian Cup as the sole bidder. Qatar to host 2019 and 2020 FIFA Club World Cup FIFA has appointed Qatar as the host of the FIFA Club World Cup in 2019 and 2020 to function as test events for the next FIFA World Cup in 2022.
  • Qatar will host the 2019 and 2020 editions in its existing seven-team format, with a revamped edition of the tournament featuring 24 teams to be played from 2021 onwards.

Smriti Irani assumes charge as WCD minister Amethi giant slayer Smriti Irani took charge as the Minister of Women and Child Development. In the current Prime Minister Modi's cabinet, she retained the Ministry of Textiles from her earlier stint. Thawarchand Gehlot takes charge as Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Union Minister Thawarchand Gehlot took charge as Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment. He was holding this ministry as a Cabinet minister even during the NDA's first term.
  • Gehlot represents the parliamentary constituency of Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh.
CAG Rajiv Mehrishi chosen External Auditor for WHO Comptroller and Auditor General of India Rajiv Mehrishi has been elected as external auditor of the World Health Organization (WHO) for four years from 2020 to 2023.
  • Mehrishi will take over from the incumbent External Auditor of WHO, the Supreme Audit Insitution of Philippines.
RBI approves appointment of Rakesh Makhija as Axis Bank Chairman Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the appointment of Rakesh Makhija as Axis Bank's chairman. He has been appointed as the Non-Executive (Part-time) Chairman of the Bank, for a period of 3 years. He will assume charge on July 18 and continue till July 17, 2022. Flipkart's Sachin Bansal joins Ujjivan Small Finance Bank as director Ujjivan Small Finance Bank, which is chasing a plan to upgrade itself into a state-of-the-art mass market bank, has appointed Flipkart founder Sachin Bansal as its independent director.
  • This is the second big futuristic move by Ujjivan management after it roped in HDFC Bank’s digital banking head Nitin Chugh as its next chief executive.
Nayib Bukele sworn in as president of El Salvador In the Central American country of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele has been sworn-in as the nation's President. Bukele was elected in February to succeed Salvador Sanchez Ceren, a leftist former guerrilla.

Ex-President Pratibha Patil Awarded With Mexico's Highest Civilian Award Former President Pratibha Patil was bestowed on the highest civilian award of Mexico for foreigners.
  • The ambassador of Mexico to India, Melba Pria, presented ''Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca'' (Order of the Aztec Eagle) to Ms Patil, who had served as the first woman president of the country during 2007-12.
  • On the occasion, Ms Patil said a mutual agreement was signed between Mexico and India when she was president, and that both the countries have emphasised on enhancing friendly relations.
WHO awarded Rajasthan health department for checking tobacco use Rajasthan’s medical and health department has been selected for the World Health Organisation (WHO) award for its contribution in the field of tobacco control.
  • WHO has selected 33 institutions and individuals across the world for the award. In South-east Asian region, two have been selected from India, of which one is the Rajasthan government and the other is Prof Raj Kumar, director, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, New Delhi.
Kerala honours veteran film star Sheela with award Veteran actress Sheela, 76, has been honoured with the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award in recognition of her contribution to the Malayalam film industry.
  • This award is the Kerala government's top film award for a film veteran. The award includes a cash prize of Rs 500,000 and a citation.

'Cricket World Cup: The Indian Challenge' book by Ashis Ray released Celebrated cricket broadcaster Ashis Ray released a new book titled ‘Cricket World Cup: The Indian Challenge’. In the new book he has Ray penned down the journey of Indian cricket at the World Cups since the inaugural edition of WCs in 1975.
  • It describes the readers about the beautiful journey witnessed by India ever since1975 when the West Indies won 60-over World Cup held in England.


OBITUARIES

Actor-Singer Ruma Guha Thakurta passes away Actor-singer Ruma Guha Thakurta, who featured in films such as Jwar Bhata, Ganga and 36 Chowringhee Lane while straddling an equally successful playback career, died in her sleep early on Monday June 3 aged 84.

IMPORTANT DAYS

World Milk Day World Milk Day is an international day established by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. It has been observed on June 1 each year since 2001. The day is intended to provide an opportunity to bring attention to activities that are connected with the dairy sector. World Bicycle Day In April 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 June as International World Bicycle Day. The resolution for World Bicycle Day recognizes "the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle, which has been in use for two centuries, and that it is a simple, affordable, reliable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation." Financial Literacy Week to be observed during June 3-7 Financial Literacy Week 2019 will be observed from June 3-7 on the theme of "Farmers" and how they benefit by being a part of the formal banking system.
  • Financial Literacy Week is an initiative of RBI to promote awareness on key topics every year through a focused campaign. Growth in agriculture is necessary for the overall economic growth and finance is an essential enabler for the same. RBI is actively involved in formulating policies that enhance the flow of credit to the farming community.
