India partners with Portugal to set up a national maritime heritage museum

India has partnered with Portugal to set up a national maritime heritage museum at Lothal in Gujarat. The Indian Navy will be the stakeholder in the project and the Portuguese Navy will assist as they have experience in it by administering the maritime museum in Lisbon, Portugal. India is to follow a similar model of the maritime museum.

NIRDPR launches initiative to help rural poor farm holds cope with climate change

For the first time in India, National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR), has launched an initiative to improve the adaptive capacity of the rural poor engaged in farm-based livelihoods to cope with climate change.

  • It seeks to establish a large-scale proof of concept on integrating community-based climate change planning and adaptation by working with climate-smart Community Resource Persons (CRPs) and National Resource Persons (NRPs).


ASI declares Chaukhandi Stupa as of national important monument

Chaukhandi Stupa, an ancient Buddhist site located in Sarnath, Uttar Pradesh, has been declared as a Monument and protected area of national importance by Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

  • Chaukhandi Stupa is a lofty mound of brick whose square edifice is surrounded by an octagonal tower. It was built to mark the place where Lord Buddha met his first disciples as he traveled from Bodhgaya to Sarnath.


Mela Kheer Bhawani celebrated with religious fervor in J&K

The annual ‘Mela Kheer Bhawani’, the most important festival of Kashmiri pandits, associated with Hindu Goddess Ragnya Devi was Monday celebrated with religious fervor and gaiety at Tulmulla area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and Kupwara with thousands of Pandith devotees participated in the function.

  • The annual festival is held on Jesht Ashtami (May-June) when Kashmiri pandits visit the place in large number to offer prayers to seek the blessings of the deity.


India test fires Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle

India successfully test-fired Hypersonic Technology Demonstrator Vehicle (HSTDV) off Odisha coast. It was test-fired from launch pad number-4 of Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island in Balasore district at 11.22 a.m.

  • With scramjet engine, it can cruise at Mach 6 and have multiple civilian applications. It can be used for launching satellites at low cost and long-range cruise missile

Facebook launches 1st interactive game show in India

Social networking giant Facebook announced its first interactive game show, titled "Confetti" in India. Starting June 12, the interactive show will air from Wednesday to Sunday on Facebook's dedicated video platform - Facebook Watch.

  • First launched in the US, the interactive game will challenge participants to answer pop culture trivia questions for a chance to win ₹3 lakh as cash prize every day.

No charges for RTGS, NEFT transactions from July 1

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) directed banks to withdraw the charges levied on the National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) and Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions with effect from July 1.

  • The directive has been issued under Section 10 (2) read with Section 18 of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act 2007 (Act 51 of 2007).

Thawar Chand Gehlot appointed Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha

Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot has been appointed the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. Gehlot represents Shajapur reserved Lok Sabha constituency in Madhya Pradesh.

Nripendra Mishra appointed Principal Secretary, P K Mishra Additional Principal Secretary to PM Modi

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved the appointment of Dr Nripendra Mishra, IAS (Retired) as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi with effect from May 31.

  • A 1967 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, Mishra is currently serving as the Prime Minister's Principal Secretary.

  • P K Mishra, IAS officer (Retired) has been appointed the Additional Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister.

Vegan Teen Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Wins Prestigious Prix Liberté

Vegan teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has won the prestigious Prix Liberté. Thunberg, 16, is the first recipient of this new award, which was designed to honor a young person 'engaged in a fight for peace and freedom'. The award comes with prize money of €25,000.

  • The campaigner has made global headlines through her efforts, which include encouraging students to attend demonstrations demanding political action on climate change while 'on strike' from school.










OBITUARIES


Amitabh Bachchan's Secretary Sheetal Jain passes away at 77



Megastar Amitabh Bachchan's longtime secretary and film producer Sheetal Jain passed away. He was 77.  Jain had been working with the Bachchan family closely for over 36 years. He had also produced Bachchan and Govinda 1998 starrer Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
