Portuguese PM arrives in India on a two-day visit
Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa arrived in Delhi to attend the second meeting of the Organising Committee on the celebrations for the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • Costa will also hold official talks with Prime Minister Modi. The Ministry of External Affairs said this will be the third official meeting between the Prime Ministers in a span of three year
Union Minister Gehlot releases Braille edition of 'Exam Warriors'
Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Thaawarchand Gehlot released Braille edition of 'Exam Warriors', a book authored by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
  • The Braille edition in Hindi and English has been prepared at the Braille Press of Rajasthan Netraheen Kalyan Sangh.
Chhattisgarh govt conducts 'Suposhan Abhiyan' to help tribals in Bastar
The Chhattisgarh government has conducted various programmes under the scheme 'Suposhan Abhiyan' in local languages in Bastar with the help of local artists.
  • Various government schemes like Suchitan Abhiyan, Mukhyamantri Haat-Bazar Clinic Scheme, Narva, Garuva, Ghuruva Bari Yojana, etc are given importance during the programme where the artists will be disseminating information in local dialects.
Odisha: CM Naveen Patnaik launches "JalSathi" initiative to ensure clean Water, women
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik launched "Jal Sathi" initiative to engage the women from self-help groups in water distribution and consumer management with the aim of women empowerment.
  • Jal Sathi program has been launched on a pilot basis in Bhubaneswar under the 5T (Transparency, Teamwork, Technology, Time, Transformation) initiative of Housing and Urban Development Department of the state government.
Government approves Rs 436 crore outlay for skilling 4 lakh persons
Government approved Rs 436 crore outlay for skilling 4 lakh persons. In the last phase, two lakh IT employees were trained under skilling program, and the new initiative will expand the scope beyond IT professionals to others keen to upskill themselves in areas like AI, Cyber security, blockchain.
  • The 'Future Skills PRIME' programme will seek to position the initiative as India stack for digital talent.
GST Council fixes 28% uniform tax rate for lottery
The Goods and Services Tax or GST Council has fixed a uniform tax rate of 28 per cent on both state-run and private lottery.
  • It also decided to rationalise the GST rate on woven and non-woven bags to 18 per cent.
Anti-hijacking exercise held off Cochin Port
A large-scale anti-hijacking exercise was conducted off the port of Kochi by the Navy, Coast Guard, the Cochin Port Trust and other agencies
  • Codenamed “Apharan”, the exercise saw participation of multiple agencies, including more than 12 ships and helicopters of the Navy, Coast Guard and Cochin Port Trust.
“Environmental Sustainability and Economic Development” Summit held in Delhi
Union Minister Prakash Javadekar addressed a Summit on "Environmental Sustainability and Economic Development in Delhi. While addressing concerns about the depleting ozone layer and the emission of Cfcs and Hfcs the minister said that it is the need of the hour to call upon a meeting to control the minimum temperatures and to keep a check.

Upgraded version of Pinaka guided rocket system successfully test-fired from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur, off the Odisha coast.
  • Pinaka is an artillery missile system capable of striking into an enemy territory up to a range of 75 km with high precision.
National conference on ‘Uniformed Women in Prison Administration’ begins
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai inaugurated a two-day National Conference on ‘Uniformed Women in Prisons Administration’ began at Central Academy for Police Training in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh.
  • For the first time, the conference is being held in Madhya Pradesh outside Delhi. It is to be noted that in Madhya Pradesh, women have been given 33 per cent reservation in government services.

Amazon, Apple and Google partner on smart home tech
Apple Inc., Alphabet Inc.’s Google and Amazon.com Inc, three of the biggest smart-home and voice-assistant providers -- are joining forces to make internet-connected homes easier to set up and safer to use.
  • They are working with theZigbee Alliance, whose members include IKEA and NXP Semiconductors among others, will also contribute to the project, titled ‘Connected Home over IP.’
Donald Trump becomes 3rd US President to be impeached
Donald Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives, becoming only the third US president to suffer the ignominy and bringing him a step closer to being removed from office.
  • Two articles of impeachment were passed over his behaviour in the Ukraine scandal - one for abuse of power and the other for obstruction of Congress.
Portugal announces Gandhi Citizenship Education Prize
Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa has announced that in order to help perpetuate Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals, Portugal will be launching a Gandhi Citizenship Education Prize, each year inspired by his different thoughts and quotes.
  • The first edition of this prize will be dedicated to animal welfare.
ADB approves 2020 administrative budget of $727 million
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a 2020 administrative budget of 726.7 million dollars, marking 5.2 per cent increase over the previous year's net internal administrative expense budget.
  • ADB's 2020 budget will support the implementation of Strategy 2030.

Patanjali Ayurved completes acquisition of bankrupt Ruchi Soya for Rs 4,350 crore
Debt-ridden Ruchi Soya's resolution is complete with Yoga guru Baba Ramdev's Patanjali Ayurved depositing Rs 1,100 crore equity in a State Bank of India (SBI) escrow account to acquire the edible oil maker for Rs 4,350 crore.
  • Ruchi Soya is the second big insolvency case to be completed this week

Indian men’s football team ranked 108th in latest FIFA rankings
The Indian men’s football team remained static at 108th spot in the year-ending FIFA rankings issued recently.India, however, lost 11 places throughout the year.
  • In the Asian rankings, Japan is followed by Iran (33), Korea (40), Australia (42) and continental champion Qatar (55).
Kuldeep Yadav becomes first Indian cricketer to take two ODI hat trick
Spinner Kuldeep Yadav became the first Indian cricketer to take two hat-tricks in the International cricket. The left-handed bowler achieved the feat during ongoing second One Day International against West Indies.

APPOINTMENTS

IPS officer Atul Karwal appointed as Director of National Police Academy
Atul Karwal, a 1988 batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the Director of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy in Hyderabad.
  • Karwal, presently working as ADG, CRPF as Director, SVP NPA by temporarily downgrading the post to the level of Additional Director General for a period up to 05.12.2021.
Safra Catz named sole CEO of Oracle
Safra Catz is appointed as the sole CEO of Oracle. The decision comes after the tragic death of former CEO Mark Hurd in October 2019 .
  • To strengthen the management team, Ellison also appointed Vishal Sikka, Founder of Vianai, former CEO of Infosys, and former CTO at SAP, to Oracle's board.
NCLAT restores Cyrus Mistry as Executive Chairman of Tata Sons
The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) restored Cyrus Mistry as the Executive Chairman of the Tata Group and held that the appointment of N Chandrasekaran was illegal.
  • However, the tribunal said the restoration order will be operational only after four weeks, the time allowed to Tatas to file an appeal.
