Mixed English Questions for Mains Exam — Set 213

Directions(1-5): In the given question, a sentence is divided into five parts out of which the last part is correct. Out of the remaining four, there are errors in three parts. Choose the part which doesn’t have an error. If all the four parts are correct, mark E i.e. All are correct as the answer.

  1. A Nile River is a major north-flowing river in northeastern Africa, (A)/ and is commonly regarded as the longest river in the world, (B)/ though some sources site the Amazon River as the longest. (C)/ The Nile, which is 6,853 km long, is an "international" river as it’s drainage basin covers eleven countries. (D)/ In particular, the Nile is the primary water source of Egypt and Sudan.
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    Option B
Option A uses the wrong article to name the river. As the river’s name is specified, it must be preceded by ‘The’ and not ‘a’. Option C is wrong as it uses ‘site’. The word site and cite are heterographs. (Heterographs are words which sound similar but have different spellings and meanings). ‘Site’ is an area on the ground or is used to refer to a webpage, whereas ‘cite’ is to quote a source for reference. Option D is wrong as it uses the ‘it’s’ instead of ‘its’. ‘Its’ is used to imply belongingness. As it is the river’s length which is being mentioned, which belongs to the river, ‘its’ must be used.

  2. Hudaydah is the main point for entry (A)/ for aiding in Yemen's three-year civil war (B)/ and agencies has (C)/ warned of a humanitarian catastrophe, (D)/ if it is attacked.
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    Option D
In part A, the correct preposition that will follow main point is ‘of’, thus making it ‘main point of entry’.
In part B, aiding is incorrect. It must be replaced with ‘aid’ to make it correct.
In part C, has is incorrect as it has been used with agencies. It must be replaced with ‘have’.

  3. One of the downsides of buying a laptop outside to the Apple store is that (A)/ there are almost too many to chose from, so we’ve reined it (B)/ in by rounding up a couple of well-rated laptops from a variety of trusted sources (C)/ and spitting them up into price points so that you can choose from (D)/ what’s available within your budget.
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    Option C
Option A: Remove 'to' after 'outside'. 'To' is used to express directionality and there is no need of it here.
Option B: Instead of ‘chose,’ it should be ‘choose.’ We always use the base form of the verb after ‘to’ (to-infinitive structure). Besides, 'Choose' is the simple present and future tense forms of the verb to choose, which means to select something instead of something else whereas 'Chose' is the simple past tense form of the same verb. We need to use simple present form as indicated by the use of auxiliary verb 'are'.
    Option C: No error.
Option D: Instead of 'spitting', it should be 'splitting'. 'Spitting' means to eject saliva forcibly from one's mouth, sometimes as a gesture of contempt or anger. 'Splitting' means the action of dividing into parts.

  4. The man that made his appearance in (A)/ the hut was none other than Sherlock (B)/ Holmes, who, spotted the remains (C)/ of the cigarette outside, understand (D)/ that Watson had discovered his hideaway.
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    Option B
In part A, the relative pronoun that should be used when referring to person is ‘who’ not ‘that’.
In part B, the tense that should be used is continuous because this is a conditional clause. It should be ‘spotting’. Following this clause, the tense should be simple past. It should be ‘understood’ instead of ‘understand’ part D.

  5. Google celebrating Holi (A)/ in 2018 with a new festival (B)/ doodle that seeks to (C)/ brings out the colourfulness (D)/ associated with the festival.
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    Option C
Part A is wrong because the verb ‘is’ is missing.
Part B is wrong because ‘festival’ is a noun. The correct word must be ‘festive’ which is an adjective which means ‘relating to a festival.’
Part D is wrong because the word ‘seeks’ has already been used in present indefinite tense. So we need not use the word ‘brings.’
