PM flags off first ever Diesel to Electric Converted Locomotive in Varanasi



Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the world's first Diesel to Electric Converted Locomotive at Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) campus in Varanasi. Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Prime Minister also paid obeisance at the Ravidas temple in Varanasi. 

  • PM Modi paid homage at the statue of Shri Guru Ravidas at the Janmsthan temple at Seer Goverdhanpur in Varanasi. Sant Ravidas was born in the 15th century in Varanasi.

  • The Prime Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed Madan Mohan Malviya Cancer Centre of Banaras Hindu University. The hospital aims to provide affordable cancer care to patients in Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, Uttarakhand and even neighbouring countries like Nepal. 


Asia's biggest defence expo at Yelahanka, Bengaluru

India is hosting the 12th edition of "Aero India 2019" Asia's biggest defence exhibition show at Air Force Station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru, from 20 to 24 February, 2019. Over 350 companies from across the world wil participate in the event. This five-day event will combine a major trade exhibition of the aerospace and defence industries with public air shows.

  • All eyes will be on Raffale aircrafts which will make their flying display . A full dress rehearsal was held at the Yelahanka Air base in BangaloreAero India will provide an unique opportunity for exchange of information, ideas and new developments in the aviation industry. 




Telangana gets two new districts

Two new districts, Narayanpet and Mulugu were created in Telangana taking the total number of districts in the state to 33Narayanpet has been carved out of Mahabubnagar district while Mulugu from Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. Telangana earlier had 31 districts.

  • Mahabubnagar District Collector D Ronald Ross, in-charge for Narayanpet and Bhupalapally Collector V Venkateswarlu for Mulugu, inaugurated the Collectors' offices in the newly created districts.


4th Agri leadership Summit 2019 held in Haryana

Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmer’s Welfare, Radha Mohan Singh, inaugurated the 4th Agri Leadership Summit 2019 at the India International Horticulture Market (IIHM) in Ganaur, Sonipat district, Haryana. It was a 3-day summit. The theme of the summit was “Entrepreneurship & Agri-Business; Agri Allied – A Promising Sector and Agri Service- Direct Marketing”. 

  • President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the closing ceremony of the summit. He launched Digital Kisan Platform. He also conferred Krishi Ratna Puraskar on Vice Chancellor K. P. Singh of Haryana Agriculture University, Hisar and honoured 9 farmers with the Kisan Ratna Puraskar.


Odisha: State's first high performance centre inaugurated

Odisha Government inaugurated its first high-performance centre in the state for realizing its dream of becoming a global sports destination. With intent to provide quality sport in the State, this high-performance centre is established by professional shooter Abhinav Bindra's 'Abhinav Futuristics Pvt. Ltd' with the help of Government of Odisha.

  • The centre was inaugurated by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik in the presence of Bindra.

ICC Test rankings: Virat Kohli at top, Pujara secures 3rd position

India captain Virat Kohli remained on top while teammate Cheteshwar Pujara managed to hold on to his third position in the latest ICC Test Cricket rankings. Kohli is leading the chart with 992 rating points ahead of New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson with 897 points and Pujara with 881. Besides Kohli and Pujara, no other Indian feature in the top 10 list.

  • In the bowlers' list, Australia fast bowler Pat Cummins has overtaken Kagiso Rabada to grab the top spot. India's Ravindra Jadeja is placed at the fifth spot with 794 points. Jadeja also features in the all-rounders' list at the third position ahead of West Indies' Jason Holder and Shakib-Al Hasan.


West Indies' Chris Gayle announces retirement after World Cup 2019

West Indies cricketer Chris Gayle will retire from One-Day Internationals after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, which is to be held in England and Wales. 39-year old Gayle is the second most capped Windies player with 284 matches as well as the second highest run-scorer with 9,727 runs. He is behind only West Indies legend Brian Lara who has 10,405 runs from 299 matches. 

  • The World Cup will be held in England and Wales from 30 May to 14 July.

Djokovic, Biles win Laureus Sports awards

Tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia won his fourth Laureus World Sportsman of the Year and American record-holding gymnast Simone Biles bagged the World Sportswoman of the Year Award.

  • Djokovic triumphed in tough competition against football star duo of Kylian Mbappe and Luka Modric, Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, Kenyan marathon world record-breaker Eliud Kipchoge and NBA superstar LeBron James.


Uday Deshpande, Smriti Mandhana among Maharashtra sports award winners

The Maharashtra government has bestowed the 'Shiv Chhatrapati Lifetime Achievement Award' on mallakhamb coach Uday Deshpande for 2017-18. The (Shiv Chhatrapati) lifetime achievement award is being conferred upon Uday Deshpande of Samarth Vyayam Mandir, who has dedicated his life for mallakhamb

  • The names of the Shiv Chhatrapati award winners in the players' category also include Indian women's cricket team member Smriti Mandhana, who hails from Sangli in western Maharashtra.

  • Among the other award recipients are hockey player Suraj Karkera, paddler Sanil Shetty, track and field athlete Siddhant Thingaliya, who specialises in 110 metres hurdles, runner Monika Athare and squash player Mahesh Mangaonkar.

  • The sports minister also announced that Satara's mountaineer Priyanka Mohite, who has scaled the Mt Everest and the Mt Lhotse among other peaks, will be awarded the 'Shiv Chhatrapati Award for Adventure'.
