World Sustainable Development Summit 2019 held at New Delhi

World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2019, the flagship event of ‘The Energy and Resources Institute’ (TERI), was inaugurated by Vice President Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The theme of WSDS 2019 was ‘Attaining the 2030 Agenda: delivering on our promise’.

  • Frank Bainimarama, Prime Minister of Fiji was honoured with the Sustainable Development Leadership Award 2019 for his outstanding contributions towards sustainable development in Fiji.

5th India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Committee Meeting Held In New Delhi

The 5th India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Committee Meeting, co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Foreign Affairs Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Abdul Momen was held in New Delhi. Four MoUs were signed during this meeting.

  • MoU on mid-career training of 1800 Bangladesh civil servants.

  • MoU between the Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) and the Ministry of Health of Bangladesh on cooperation in the field of medicinal plants.

  • MoU between Anti-Corruption Commission of Bangladesh and Central Bureau of Investigation of India(CBI) for cooperation in the fight against graft.

  • MoU between Hiranandani Group and Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority to facilitate investments in the Indian Economic Zone in Mongla, Bangladesh.


IAF demonstrates 'Exercise Vayu Shakti-2019' in Pokharan



The Indian Air Force (IAF) demonstrated its full spectrum combat and fire capabilities during 'Exercise Vayu Shakti-2019' in Pokharan firing range close to Indo-Pak border in Rajasthan. The exercise was performed in the presence of Indian Air Force chief BS Dhanoa.

  • The IAF conducts firepower demonstration once in three years which is participated by helicopters, fighters, transports, force enablers and support systems.The first such demonstration was held by the IAF on July 21, 1953, at Tilpat range in New Delhi.


IWAI launched portal ‘LADIS’ for real time information

Moving a step ahead towards ensuring optimum use of National Waterways, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) launched a new portal LADIS – Least Available Depth Information System in New Delhi. The portal being hosted on IWAI’s website www.iwai.nic.in has been developed in-house. 

  • LADIS will ensure that real-time data on least available depths is disseminated for ship/barge and cargo owners so that they can undertake transportation on NWs in a more planned way.

Andhra farmers with less than 5 acres land to get Rs 9000 under Annadata Sukhibhava scheme 2019

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu announced Rs 9000 each to the farmers with less than 5 acres land under Annadata Sukhibhava scheme 2019. Farmers having land more than 5 acres, will be given Rs 10,000.

  • The Chief Minister also laid emphasis on the special skill development training programmes given to youths that assist them in securing jobs at various sectors.


Amazon launched ‘Amazon Pay UPI’ in collaboration with Axis Bank for Indian android users

To facilitate secure payments and financial transactions on its platform, Amazon launched "Amazon Pay Unified Payments Interface (UPI)" for Android users in partnership with Axis Bank to issue UPI IDs to its customers in India.

  • With this, users would be able to use their Amazon Pay UPI ID to shop on Amazon.in, make payments for their daily purchases, including recharges and bill payments, without entering bank account or debit card credentials or going through a multi-layer process to pay from their bank account.

NASA To Launch SPHEREx Mission To Investigate Universe



US space agency NASA has unveiled a new space telescope, SPHEREx, that would begin a two-year mission in 2023 to look for life's ingredients and probe how the universe evolved. The Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) mission is a planned two-year mission funded at 242 million USD.

  • SPHEREx will survey the sky in optical as well as near-infrared light which, though not visible to the human eye, serves as a powerful tool for answering cosmic questions. Astronomers will use the mission to gather data on more than 300 million galaxies, as well as more than 100 million stars in our own Milky Way.

Expert Committee Recommends Rs 9,750 Monthly National Minimum Wage

A government-appointed expert committee has proposed doubling the national-level minimum wage for a worker in the country to Rs 9,750 a month, up from a floor of Rs 4,576 at present. The committee has alternatively proposed a national minimum wage at various regional levels in the range of Rs 8,892-11,622 a month (depending on local factors) and suggested an additional house rent allowance for urban workers. Considering a worker works for 26 days a month, the minimum monthly wage came to Rs 9,750.

  • The report of the expert committee, led by V V Giri National Labour Institute (VVGNLI) Fellow Anoop Satpathy, was made public by the Union labour and employment ministry. The committee is of the considered view that the single value of the NMW (National Minimum Wage) for India should be set at Rs 375 per day as of July 2018.

Nehwal defeats Sindhu to defend senior national title

In a battle between the Indian shuttle queens, Saina Nehwal toppled top seed PV Sindhu for the second year as she claimed the senior national title in women's singles final with a 21-18, 21-15 victory in Guwahati. 

  • Earlier on the same day, Sourabh Verma clinched his third consecutive title by defeating Lakshya Sen 21-18, 21-13 in the men's singles final.


Myanmar defeat Nepal to clinch Hero Gold Cup title

Myanmar clinched the Hero Gold Cup crown in style, edging Nepal 3-1 in the final at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar. A brace from Yee Yee Oo, along with a brilliant effort from Win Theingi Tun was enough to down a spirited Nepal side. 

Vidarbha clinches Irani Cup title

Riding their first innings lead, Ranji champions Vidarbha clinched the Irani Cup defeating Rest of India (RoI) at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur. Although the match ended in a draw, Vidarbha emerged champions on the basis of their 95-run first innings lead. 

  • Vidarbha had scored 425 in their first innings in reply to Rest of India's 330. Later, RoI declared their second innings on 374/3, setting Vidarbha a 280-run target.
